Well-posedness for the Prandtl system without analyticity or monotonicity

It has been thought for a while that the Prandtl system is only well-posed under the Oleinik monotonicity assumption or under an analyticity assumption. We show that the Prandtl system is actually locally well-posed for data that belong to the Gevrey class 7/4 in the horizontal variable x. Our result improves the classical local well-posedness result for data that are analytic in x (that is Gevrey class 1). The proof uses new estimates, based on non-quadratic energy functionals.

Recent progress in the theory of homogenization with oscillating Dirichlet data

This note is a summary of the recent paper [9]. Here, we study the homogenization of elliptic systems with Dirichlet boundary condition, when both the coefficients and the boundary datum are oscillating. In particular, in the paper [9], we showed that, the solutions converge in L2 with a power rate, and we identified the homogenized limit system and the homogenized boundary data. Due to a boundary layer phenomenon, this homogenized system depends in a non trivial way on the boundary. The analysis in [9] answers a longstanding open problem, raised for instance in [4]

On Uniqueness for supercritical nonlinear wave and Schrödinger equations

In a recent paper, Struwe considered the Cauchy problem for a class of nonlinear wave and Scrödinger equations. Under some assumptions on the nonlinearities, it was shown that uniqueness of classical solutions can be obtained in the much larger class of distribution solutions satisfying the energy inequality. As pointed out in [38], the conditions on the nonlinearities are satisfied for any polynomial growth but they fail to hold for higher growth (for example ${\rm e}^{u^2}$). Our aim here is to improve Struwe's result by showing that uniqueness holds for more general nonlinearities including higher growth or oscillations.

Derivation of Ohm's law from the kinetic equations

The goal of this article is to give a formal derivation of Ohm's law of Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) starting from the Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system. The derivation is based on various physical scalings and the moment methods when the Knudsen number goes to zero. We also give a derivation of the so-called Hall effect as well as other limit models such as the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system. Our results include both the compressible and incompressible MHD models.

Global existence for capillary water waves

Consider the capillary water waves equations, set in the whole space with infinite depth, and consider small data (i.e. sufficiently close to zero velocity, and constant height of the water). We prove global existence and scattering. The proof combines in a novel way the energy method with a cascade of energy estimates, the space-time resonance method and commuting vector fields.

On the wellposedness of the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell system

We study the local and global wellposedness of a full system of Magneto-Hydro-Dynamic equations. The system is a coupling of the forced (Lorentz force) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the Maxwell equations through Ohm's law for the current. We show the local existence of mild solutions for arbitrarily large data in a space similar to the scale invariant spaces classically used for Navier-Stokes. These solutions are global if the initial data are small enough.

A new approach to velocity averaging lemmas in {B}esov spaces

We develop a new approach to velocity averaging lemmas based on the dispersive properties of the kinetic transport operator. This method yields unprecedented sharp results, which display, in some cases, a gain of one full derivative. Moreover, the study of dispersion allows to treat the case of $L_x^rL^p_v$ integrability with $r\leq p$. We also establish results on the control of concentrations in the degenerate $L_{x,v}^1$ case, which is fundamental in the study of the hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation.

Local-in-Time Existence and Uniqueness of Solutions to the Prandtl Equations by Energy Methods

We prove local existence and uniqueness for the two-dimensional Prandtl system in weighted Sobolev spaces under the Oleinik's monotonicity assumption. In particular we do not use the Crocco transform. Our proof is based on a new nonlinear energy estimate for the Prandtl system. This new energy estimate is based on a cancellation property which is valid under the monotonicity assumption. To construct the solution, we use a regularization of the system that preserves this nonlinear structure. This new nonlinear structure may give some insight on the convergence properties from Navier-Stokes system to Euler system when the viscosity goes to zero.

Generating and Adding Flows on Locally Complete Metric Spaces

As a generalization of a vector field on a manifold, the notion of an arc field on a locally complete metric space was introduced in \cite{BC}. In that paper, the authors proved an analogue of the Cauchy-Lipschitz Theorem i.e they showed the existence and uniqueness of solution curves for a time independent arc field. In this paper, we extend the result to the time dependent case, namely we show the existence and uniqueness of solution curves for a time dependent arc field. We also introduce the notion of the sum of two time dependent arc fields and show existence and uniqueness of solution curves for this sum.

DiPerna-Lions flow for relativistic particles in an electromagnetic field

We show the existence and uniqueness of a DiPerna-Lions flow for relativistic particles subject to a Lorentz force in an electromagnetic field. The electric and magnetic fields solves the linear Maxwell system in the void but for singular initial conditions. As the corresponding force field is only in $L^2$, we have to perform a careful analysis of the cancellations over a trajectory.

Darcy's flow with prescribed contact angle -- Well-posedness and lubrication approximation

We consider the spreading of a thin two-dimensional droplet on a solid substrate. We use a model for viscous fluids where the evolution is governed by Darcy's Law. At the triple point where air and liquid meet the solid substrate, the liquid assumes a constant, non-zero contact angle ({\it partial wetting}). We show local and global well-posedness of this free boundary problem in the presence of the moving contact point. Our estimates are uniform in the contact angle assumed by the liquid at the contact point. In the so-called lubrication approximation (long-wave limit) we show that the solutions converge to the solution of a one-dimensional degenerate parabolic fourth order equation which belongs to a family of thin-film equations. The main technical difficulty is to describe the evolution of the non-smooth domain and to identify suitable spaces that capture the transition to the asymptotic model uniformly in the small parameter $\eps$.

Uniform regularity and vanishing viscosity limit for the free surface Navier-Stokes equations

We study the inviscid limit of the free boundary Navier-Stokes equations. We prove the existence of solutions on a uniform time interval by using a suitable functional framework based on Sobolev conormal spaces. This allows us to use a strong compactness argument to justify the inviscid limit. Our approach does not rely on the justification of asymptotic expansions. In particular, we get a new existence result for the Euler equations with free surface from the one for Navier-Stokes.

Lack of compactness in the 2D critical Sobolev embedding, the general case

This paper is devoted to the description of the lack of compactness of the Sobolev embedding of $H^1(\R^2)$ in the critical Orlicz space ${\cL}(\R^2)$. It turns out that up to cores our result is expressed in terms of the concentration-type examples derived by J. Moser in \cite{M} as in the radial setting investigated in \cite{BMM}. However, the analysis we used in this work is strikingly different from the one conducted in the radial case which is based on an $L^ \infty$ estimate far away from the origin and which is no longer valid in the general framework. Within the general framework of $H^1(\R^2)$, the strategy we adopted to build the profile decomposition in terms of examples by Moser concentrated around cores is based on capacity arguments and relies on an extraction process of mass concentrations. The essential ingredient to extract cores consists in proving by contradiction that if the mass responsible for the lack of compactness of the Sobolev embedding in the Orlicz space is scattered, then the energy used would exceed that of the starting sequence.

Unconditional well-posedness for wave maps

We prove uniqueness of solutions to the wave map equation in the natural class, namely $ (u, \partial_t u) \in C([0,T); \dot{H}^{d/2})\times C^1([0,T); \dot{H}^{d/2-1})$ in dimensions $d\geq 4$. This is achieved through estimating the difference of two solutions at a lower regularity level. In order to reduce to the Coulomb gauge, one has to localize the gauge change in suitable cones as well as estimate the difference between the frames and connections associated to each solutions and take advantage of the assumption that the target manifold has bounded curvature.

Threshold solutions in the case of mass-shift for the critical Kline-Gordon equation

We study global dynamics for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with the energy-critical nonlinearity in two or higher dimensions when the energy equals the threshold given by the ground state of a mass-shifted equation, and prove that the solutions are divided into scattering and blowup. In short, the Kenig-Merle scattering/blowup dichotomy extends to the threshold energy in the case of mass-shift for the critical nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation.

Trudinger-Moser inequality on the whole plane with the exact growth condition

Trudinger-Moser inequality is a substitute to the (forbidden) critical Sobolev embedding, namely the case where the scaling corresponds to $L^\infty$. It is well known that the original form of the inequality with the sharp exponent (proved by Moser) fails on the whole plane, but a few modified versions are available. We prove a precised version of the latter, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness, as well as for the compactness, in terms of the growth and decay of the nonlinear function. It is tightly related to the ground state of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (or the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation), for which the range of the time phase (or the mass constant) as well as the energy is given by the best constant of the inequality.

Global existence for the Euler-Maxwell system

The Euler-Maxwell system describes the evolution of a plasma when the collisions are important enough that each species is in a hydrodynamic equilibrium. In this paper we prove global existence of small solutions to this system set in the whole three-dimensional space, by combining the space-time resonance method, dispersive estimates, localization estimates and energy estimates. An important novelty is that we can prove a very slow growth of high derivatives even with a nonintegrable decay by reiterating the energy estimate.
