Uniform regularity for the Navier-Stokes equation with Navier boundary condition

We prove that there exists an interval of time which is uniform in the vanishing viscosity limit and for which the Navier-Stokes equation with Navier boundary condition has a strong solution. This solution is uniformly bounded in a conormal Sobolev space and has only one normal derivative bounded in $L^\infty$. This allows to get the vanishing viscosity limit to the incompressible Euler system from a strong compactness argument.

Scattering threshold for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

We show scattering versus blow-up dichotomy below the ground state energy for the focusing nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation, in the spirit of Kenig-Merle for the $H^1$ critical wave and Schrödinger equations. Our result includes the $H^1$ critical case, where the threshold is given by the ground state for the massless equation, and the 2D square-exponential case, where the mass for the ground state may be modified, depending on the constant in the sharp Trudinger-Moser inequality. The main difficulty is lack of scaling invariance both in the linear and nonlinear terms.

Remarks on the Acoustic Limit for the Boltzmann Equation

We use some new nonlinear estimates found in \cite {LM} to improve the results of \cite{GL} that establish the acoustic limit for DiPerna-Lions solutions of Boltzmann equation in three ways. First, we enlarge the class of collision kernels treated to that found in \cite{LM}, thereby treating all classical collision kernels to which the DiPerna-Lions theory applies. Second, we improve the scaling of the kinetic density fluctuations with Knudsen number from $O(ε^m)$ for some $m>\frac12$ to $O(ε^\frac12)$. Third, we extend the results from periodic domains to bounded domains with impermeable boundaries, deriving the boundary condition for the acoustic system.

Well-posedness of compressible Euler equations in a physical vacuum

An important problem in gas and fluid dynamics is to understand the behavior of vacuum states, namely the behavior of the system in the presence of vacuum. In particular, physical vacuum, in which the boundary moves with a nontrivial finite normal acceleration, naturally arises in the study of the motion of gaseous stars or shallow water. Despite its importance, there are only few mathematical results available near vacuum. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the physical systems become degenerate along the vacuum boundary. In this paper, we establish the local-in-time well-posedness of three-dimensional compressible Euler equations for polytropic gases with physical vacuum by considering the problem as a free boundary problem.

Global existence of weak solutions to the FENE dumbbell model of polymeric flows

Systems coupling fluids and polymers are of great interest in many branches of sciences. One of the models to describe them is the FENE (Finite Extensible Nonlinear Elastic) dumbbell model. We prove global existence of weak solutions to the FENE dumbbell model of polymeric flows for a very general class of potentials. The main problem is the passage to the limit in a nonlinear term that has no obvious compactness properties. The proof uses many weak convergence techniques. In particular it is based on the control of the propagation of strong convergence of some well chosen quantity by studying a transport equation for its defect measure.

On the lack of compactness in the 2D critical Sobolev embedding

This paper is devoted to the description of the lack of compactness of $H^1_{rad}(\R^2)$ in the Orlicz space. Our result is expressed in terms of the concentration-type examples derived by P. -L. Lions. The approach that we adopt to establish this characterization is completely different from the methods used in the study of the lack of compactness of Sobolev embedding in Lebesgue spaces and take into account the variational aspect of Orlicz spaces. We also investigate the feature of the solutions of non linear wave equation with exponential growth, where the Orlicz norm plays a decisive role.

Remarks on the Blowup Criteria for Oldroyd Models

We provide a new method to prove and improve the Chemin-Masmoudi criterion for viscoelastic systems of Oldroyd type in \cite{CM} in two space dimensions. Our method is much easier than the one based on the well-known \textit{losing a priori estimate} and is expected to be easily adopted to other problems involving the losing \textit{a priori} estimate.

Well and ill-posedness issues for energy supercritical waves

We investigate the initial value problem for some energy supercritical semilinear wave equations. We establish local existence in suitable spaces with continuous flow. We also obtain some ill-posedness/weak ill-posedness results. The proof uses the finite speed of propagation and a quantitative study of the associated ODE. It does not require any scaling invariance of the equation.

Energy scattering for 2D critical wave equation

We investigate existence and asymptotic completeness of the wave operators for nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations with a defocusing exponential nonlinearity in two space dimensions. A certain threshold is defined based on the value of the conserved Hamiltonian, below which the exponential potential energy is dominated by the kinetic energy via a Trudinger-Moser type inequality. We prove that if the energy is below or equal to the critical value, then the solution approaches a free Klein-Gordon solution at the time infinity. The interesting feature in the critical case is that the Strichartz estimate together with Sobolev-type inequalities can not control the nonlinear term uniformly on each time interval, but with constants depending on how much the solution is concentrated. Thus we have to trace concentration of the energy along time, in order to set up favorable nonlinear estimates, and then to implement Bourgain's induction argument. We show the same result for the "subcritical" nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Energy Critical NLS in two space dimensions

We investigate the initial value problem for a defocusing nonlinear Schrödingerequation with exponential nonlinearity. We identify subcritical, critical and supercritical regimes in the energy space. We establish global well-posedness in the subcritical and critical regimes. Well-posedness fails to hold in the supercritical case.

Well-posedness for compressible Euler equations with physical vacuum singularity

An important problem in the theory of compressible gas flows is to understand the singular behavior of vacuum states. The main difficulty lies in the fact that the system becomes degenerate at the vacuum boundary, where the characteristics coincide and have unbounded derivative. In this paper, we overcome this difficulty by presenting a new formulation and new energy spaces. We establish the local in time well-posedness of one-dimensional compressible Euler equations for isentropic flows with the physical vacuum singularity in some spaces adapted to the singularity.

On uniqueness for the critical wave equation

We prove the uniqueness of weak solutions to the critical defocusing wave equation in 3D under a local energy inequality condition. More precisely, we prove the uniqueness of $ u \in L^\infty\_t(\dot{H}^{1})\cap \dot{W}^{1,\infty}\_t(L^2)$, under the condition that $u$ verifies some local energy inequalities.
