Quantum Ergodicity on large hyperbolic surfaces for local and pseudolocal operators

We prove a quantum ergodicity theorem for sequences of closed hyperbolic surfaces converging to the Poincaré disc in the Benjamini-Schramm sense. Assuming a uniform lower bound on the injectivity radius and a spectral gap, we establish vanishing of quantum variance on fixed spectral windows for a class of observables that contains differential operators and finite-propagation smooth operators. This generalises a result of Le Masson and Sahlsten from scalar observables to both local and 'pseudolocal' operator settings.

Typical hyperbolic surfaces have a spectral gap greater than $2/9 - ε$

In this article, we prove that typical hyperbolic surfaces, sampled with the Weil-Petersson probability measure, have a spectral gap at least $2/9 - ε$. This is an intermediate result on the way to our proof of the optimal spectral gap $1/4 - ε$, building on the results of the first part of this series. A significant part of the proof is an explicit inclusion-exclusion argument to exclude tangles at the level of precision $1/g$.

Friedman-Ramanujan functions in random hyperbolic geometry and application to spectral gaps I

In this series of articles, we analyse the level-sets of length functions on the moduli space of compact hyperbolic surfaces of fixed genus. This work ultimately culminates in a proof that typical hyperbolic surfaces have an optimal spectral gap. In this first article, we introduce new volume functions $V_g^T(l)$, counting the expected number of closed geodesics of type $T$ and length $l$ on a random hyperbolic surface of genus $g$. So far, this function has only been considered in the case where the type is simple, in which case it can be expressed as a combination of Weil-Petersson volumes polynomials, as proven by Mirzakhani. We provide an integral expression for $V_g^T(l)$ for any prescribed type $T$, which we use to prove that $V_g^T(l)$ admits a full asymptotic expansion in powers of $1/g$. We then claim that the coefficients in this expansion, as a function of the length variable $l$, belong to a newly-introduced class of functions called "Friedman-Ramanujan functions". We relate this claim to the study of the spectral gap of the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and prove it when $T$ fills a surface of Euler characteristic $0$ or $-1$, providing a method to explicitly compute all coefficients in the second-order expansion. We conclude by displaying how the presence of tangles (which is an event of vanishing probability) prevents the sum over all types to satisfy the Friedman-Ramanujan property at the second order.

A Moebius inversion formula to discard tangled hyperbolic surfaces

Recent literature on Weil-Petersson random hyperbolic surfaces has met a consistent obstacle: the necessity to condition the model, prohibiting certain rare geometric patterns (which we call tangles), such as short closed geodesics or embedded surfaces of short boundary length. The main result of this article is a Moebius inversion formula, allowing to integrate the indicator function of the set of tangle-free surfaces in a systematic, tractable way. It is inspired by a key step of Friedman's celebrated proof of Alon's conjecture. We further prove that our tangle-free hypothesis significantly reduces the number of local topological types of short geodesics, replacing the exponential proliferation observed on tangled surfaces by a polynomial growth.

Friedman-Ramanujan functions in random hyperbolic geometry and application to spectral gaps II

The core focus of this series of two articles is the study of the distribution of the length spectrum of closed hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$, sampled randomly with respect to the Weil-Petersson probability measure. In the first article, we introduced a notion of local topological type $T$, and established the existence of a density function $V_g^T(l)$ describing the distribution of the lengths of all closed geodesics of type $T$ in a genus $g$ hyperbolic surface. We proved that $V_g^{T}(l)$ admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of $1/g$. We introduced a new class of functions, called Friedman-Ramanujan functions, and related it to the study of the spectral gap $λ_1$ of the Laplacian. In this second part, we provide a variety of new tools allowing to compute and estimate the volume functions $V_g^{T}(l)$. Notably, we construct new sets of coordinates on Teichmüller spaces, distinct from Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates, in which the Weil-Petersson volume has a simple form. These coordinates are tailored to the geodesics we study, and we can therefore prove nice formulae for their lengths. We use these new ideas, together with a notion of pseudo-convolutions, to prove that the coefficients of the expansion of $V_g^{T}(l)$ in powers of $1/g$ are Friedman-Ramanujan functions, for any local topological type $T$. We then exploit this result to prove that, for any $ε>0$, $λ_1 \geq \frac14 - ε$ with probability going to one as $g \rightarrow + \infty$, or, in other words, typical hyperbolic surfaces have an asymptotically optimal spectral gap.

Spectral gap of random hyperbolic surfaces

Let $X$ be a closed, connected, oriented surface of genus $g$, with a hyperbolic metric chosen at random according to the Weil--Petersson measure on the moduli space of Riemannian metrics. Let $λ_1=λ_1(X)$ bethe first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian on $X$ or, in other words, the spectral gap.In this paper we give a full road-map to prove that for arbitrarily small~$α>0$,\begin{align*} \Pwp{λ_1 \leq \frac{1}{4} - α^2 } \Lim_{g\To +\infty} 0.\end{align*}The full proofs are deferred to separate papers.

A high-genus asymptotic expansion of Weil-Petersson volume polynomials

The object under consideration in this article is the total volume $V_{g,n}(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ of the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces of genus $g$ with $n$ boundary components of lengths $x_1, \ldots, x_n$, for the Weil-Petersson volume form. We prove the existence of an asymptotic expansion of the quantity $V_{g,n}(x_1, \ldots, x_n)$ in terms of negative powers of the genus $g$, true for fixed $n$ and any $x_1, \ldots, x_n \geq 0$. The first term of this expansion appears in work of Mirzakhani and Petri (2019), and we compute the second term explicitly. The main tool used in the proof is Mirzakhani's topological recursion formula, for which we provide a comprehensive introduction.

Quantum ergodicity for expanding quantum graphs in the regime of spectral delocalization

We consider a sequence of finite quantum graphs with few loops, so that they converge, in the sense of Benjamini-Schramm, to a random infinite quantum tree. We assume these quantum trees are spectrally delocalized in some interval $I$, in the sense that their spectrum in $I$ is purely absolutely continuous and their Green's functions are well controlled near the real axis. We furthermore suppose that the underlying sequence of discrete graphs is expanding. We deduce a quantum ergodicity result, showing that the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues lying in $I$ are spatially delocalized.

Empirical spectral measures of quantum graphs in the Benjamini-Schramm limit

We introduce the notion of Benjamini-Schramm convergence for quantum graphs. This notion of convergence, intended to play the role of the already existing notion for discrete graphs, means that the restriction of the quantum graph to a randomly chosen ball has a limiting distribution. We prove that any sequence of quantum graphs with uniformly bounded data has a convergent subsequence in this sense. We then consider the empirical spectral measure of a convergent sequence (with general boundary conditions and edge potentials) and show that it converges to the expected spectral measure of the limiting random rooted quantum graph. These results are similar to the discrete case, but the proofs are significantly different.

Absolutely Continuous Spectrum for Quantum Trees

We study the spectra of quantum trees of finite cone type. These are quantum graphs whose geometry has a certain homogeneity, and which carry a finite set of edge lengths, coupling constants and potentials on the edges. We show the spectrum consists of bands of purely absolutely continuous spectrum, along with a discrete set of eigenvalues. Afterwards, we study random perturbations of such trees, at the level of edge length and coupling, and prove the stability of pure AC spectrum, along with resolvent estimates.

Quantum Ergodicity on Graphs : from Spectral to Spatial Delocalization

We prove a quantum-ergodicity theorem on large graphs, for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators in a very general setting. We consider a sequence of finite graphs endowed with discrete Schrödinger operators, assumed to have a local weak limit. We assume that our graphs have few short loops, in other words that the limit model is a random rooted tree endowed with a random discrete Schrödinger operator. We show that absolutely continuous spectrum for the infinite model, reinforced by a good control of the moments of the Green function, imply "quantum ergodicity", a form of spatial delocalization for eigenfunctions of the finite graphs approximating the tree. This roughly says that the eigenfunctions become equidistributed in phase space. Our result applies in particular to graphs converging to the Anderson model on a regular tree, in the régime of extended states studied by Klein and Aizenman-Warzel.

math.SP

Quantum ergodicity for the Anderson model on regular graphs

We prove a result of delocalization for the Anderson model on the regular tree (Bethe lattice). When the disorder is weak, it is known that large parts of the spectrum are a.s. purely absolutely continuous, and that the dynamical transport is ballistic. In this work, we prove that in such AC regime, the eigenfunctions are also delocalized in space, in the sense that if we consider a sequence of regular graphs converging to the regular tree, then the eigenfunctions become asymptotically uniformly distributed. The precise result is a quantum ergodicity theorem.

Poisson kernel expansions for Schrödinger operators on trees

We study Schrödinger operators on trees and construct associated Poisson kernels, in analogy to the laplacian on the unit disc. We show that in the absolutely continuous spectrum, the generalized eigenfunctions of the operator are generated by the Poisson kernel. We use this to define a "Fourier transform", giving a Fourier inversion formula and a Plancherel formula, where the domain of integration runs over the energy parameter and the geometric boundary of the tree.

Some relations between the spectra of simple and non-backtracking random walks

We establish some relations between the spectra of simple and non-backtracking random walks on non-regular graphs, generalizing some well-known facts for regular graphs. Our two main results are 1) a quantitative relation between the mixing rates of the simple random walk and of the non-backtracking random walk 2) a variant of the "Ihara determinant formula" which expresses the characteristic polynomial of the adjacency matrix, or of the laplacian, as the determinant of a certain non-backtracking random walk with holomorphic weights.

Quantum ergodicity on large graphs

We give three different proofs of the main result of Anantharaman-Le Masson, establishing quantum ergodicity -- a form of delocalization --for eigenfunctions of the laplacian on large regular graphs of fixed degree. These three proofs are much shorter than the original one, quite different from one another, and we feelthat each of the four proofs sheds a different light on the problem. The goal of this exploration is to find a proof that could be adapted for othermodels of interest in mathematical physics, such as the Anderson model on large regular graphs, regular graphs with weighted edges, or possibly certain models of non-regular graphs.A source of optimism in this direction is that we are able to extend the last proof to the case of anisotropic random walks on large regular graphs.

Wigner measures and observability for the Schrödinger equation on the disk

We analyse the structure of semiclassical and microlocal Wigner measures for solutions to the linear Schrödinger equation on the disk, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our approach links the propagation of singularities beyond geometric optics with the completely integrable nature of the billiard in the disk. We prove a "structure theorem", expressing the restriction of the Wigner measures on each invariant torus in terms of {\em second-microlocal measures}. They are obtained by performing a finer localization in phase space around each of these tori, at the limit of the uncertainty principle, and are shown to propagate according to Heisenberg equations on the circle. Our construction yields as corollaries (a) that the disintegration of the Wigner measures is absolutely continuous in the angular variable, which is an expression of the dispersive properties of the equation; (b) an observability inequality, saying that the $L^2$-norm of a solution on any open subset intersecting the boundary (resp. the $L^2$-norm of the Neumann trace on any nonempty open set of the boundary) controls its full $L^2$-norm (resp. $H^1$-norm). These results show in particular that the energy of solutions cannot concentrate on periodic trajectories of the billiard flow other than the boundary.

Delocalization of quasimodes on the disk

This note deals with semiclassical measures associated to {(sufficiently accurate)} quasimodes $(u_h)$ for the Laplace-Dirichlet operator on the disk. In this time-independent set-up, we simplify the statements of our preprint arXiv:1406.0681 and their proofs. We describe the restriction of semiclassical measures to every invariant torus in terms of two-microlocal measures. As corollaries, we show regularity and delocalization properties for limit measures of $|u_h|^2 dx$: these are absolutely continuous in the interior of the disk and charge every open set intersecting the boundary.
