Dynamic Correlation of Market Connectivity, Risk Spillover and Abnormal Volatility in Stock Price

The connectivity of stock markets reflects the information efficiency of capital markets and contributes to interior risk contagion and spillover effects. We compare Shanghai Stock Exchange A-shares (SSE A-shares) during tranquil periods, with high leverage periods associated with the 2015 subprime mortgage crisis. We use Pearson correlations of returns, the maximum strongly connected subgraph, and $3σ$ principle to iteratively determine the threshold value for building a dynamic correlation network of SSE A-shares. Analyses are carried out based on the networking structure, intra-sector connectivity, and node status, identifying several contributions. First, compared with tranquil periods, the SSE A-shares network experiences a more significant small-world and connective effect during the subprime mortgage crisis and the high leverage period in 2015. Second, the finance, energy and utilities sectors have a stronger intra-industry connectivity than other sectors. Third, HUB nodes drive the growth of the SSE A-shares market during bull periods, while stocks have a think-tail degree distribution in bear periods and show distinct characteristics in terms of market value and finance. Granger linear and non-linear causality networks are also considered for the comparison purpose. Studies on the evolution of inter-cycle connectivity in the SSE A-share market may help investors improve portfolios and develop more robust risk management policies.

Forklens: Accurate weak-lensing shear measurement with deep learning

Weak gravitational lensing is one of the most important probes of the nature of dark matter and dark energy. In order to extract cosmological information from next-generation weak lensing surveys (e.g., Euclid, Roman, LSST, and CSST) as much as possible, accurate measurements of weak lensing shear are required. There are existing algorithms to measure the weak lensing shear on imaging data, which have been successfully applied in previous surveys. In the meantime, machine learning (ML) has been widely recognized in various astrophysics applications in modeling and observations. In this work, we present a fully deep-learning-based approach to measuring weak lensing shear accurately. Our approach comprises two modules. The first one contains a convolutional neural network (CNN) with two branches for taking galaxy images and point spread function (PSF) simultaneously, and the output of this module includes the galaxy's magnitude, size, and shape. The second module includes a multiple-layer neural network (NN) to calibrate weak-lensing shear measurements. We name the program Forklens and make it publicly available online. Applying Forklens to CSST-like mock images, we achieve consistent accuracy with traditional approaches (such as moment-based measurement and forward model fitting) on the sources with high signal-to-noise ratios (S/N, > 20). For the sources with S/N < 10, Forklens exhibits an $\sim 36\%$ higher Pearson coefficient on galaxy ellipticity measurements. After adopting galaxy weighting, the shear measurements with Forklens deliver accuracy levels to $0.2\%$. The whole procedure of Forklens is automated and costs about $0.7$ milliseconds per galaxy, which is appropriate for adequately taking advantage of the sky coverage and depth of the upcoming weak lensing surveys.

Data-Driven Predictive Control with Adaptive Disturbance Attenuation for Constrained Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel data-driven predictive control approach for systems subject to time-domain constraints. The approach combines the strengths of H-infinity control for rejecting disturbances and MPC for handling constraints. In particular, the approach can dynamically adapt H-infinity disturbance attenuation performance depending on measured system state and forecasted disturbance level to satisfy constraints. We establish theoretical properties of the approach including robust guarantees of closed-loop stability, disturbance attenuation, constraint satisfaction under noisy data, as well as sufficient conditions for recursive feasibility, and illustrate the approach with a numerical example.

An analytical approximation of the evolution of the primordial curvature perturbation in the ultraslow-roll inflation

Cosmic inflation can enter an ultraslow-roll (USR) stage, if there is a plateau on the inflaton potential. During this stage, the primordial curvature perturbation ${\mathcal R}_k$ and its power spectrum ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ can be remarkably enhanced on small scales. In this work, an analytical approximation is provided to systematically study the evolution of ${\mathcal R}_k$ in the USR inflation. We first discuss the asymptotic solutions of the moduli and arguments of ${\mathcal R}_k$ and its time derivative ${\mathcal R}_{k,N}$ on the sub- and super-horizon scales separately and find that all these solutions have simple exponential forms. Then, ${\mathcal R}_k$ on five typical scales are investigated in order. Our analytical approximation predicts that ${\mathcal R}_k$ first revolves around the origin in the complex plane, but if it crosses the horizon around the start of the USR stage, there appears a subsequent linear evolution towards or away from the origin. This behavior naturally explains the shape of ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ from the sharp dip to the peak and matches the numerical results perfectly. Moreover, the minimum of ${\mathcal P}_{\mathcal R}$ is exactly proved to be nonvanishing. Our analytical approximation will help the model building in primordial black hole and gravitational wave physics.

Pareto-wise Ranking Classifier for Multi-objective Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search

In the deployment of deep neural models, how to effectively and automatically find feasible deep models under diverse design objectives is fundamental. Most existing neural architecture search (NAS) methods utilize surrogates to predict the detailed performance (e.g., accuracy and model size) of a candidate architecture during the search, which however is complicated and inefficient. In contrast, we aim to learn an efficient Pareto classifier to simplify the search process of NAS by transforming the complex multi-objective NAS task into a simple Pareto-dominance classification task. To this end, we propose a classification-wise Pareto evolution approach for one-shot NAS, where an online classifier is trained to predict the dominance relationship between the candidate and constructed reference architectures, instead of using surrogates to fit the objective functions. The main contribution of this study is to change supernet adaption into a Pareto classifier. Besides, we design two adaptive schemes to select the reference set of architectures for constructing classification boundary and regulate the rate of positive samples over negative ones, respectively. We compare the proposed evolution approach with state-of-the-art approaches on widely-used benchmark datasets, and experimental results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms other approaches and have found a number of neural architectures with different model sizes ranging from 2M to 6M under diverse objectives and constraints.

sVAD: A Robust, Low-Power, and Light-Weight Voice Activity Detection with Spiking Neural Networks

Speech applications are expected to be low-power and robust under noisy conditions. An effective Voice Activity Detection (VAD) front-end lowers the computational need. Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) are known to be biologically plausible and power-efficient. However, SNN-based VADs have yet to achieve noise robustness and often require large models for high performance. This paper introduces a novel SNN-based VAD model, referred to as sVAD, which features an auditory encoder with an SNN-based attention mechanism. Particularly, it provides effective auditory feature representation through SincNet and 1D convolution, and improves noise robustness with attention mechanisms. The classifier utilizes Spiking Recurrent Neural Networks (sRNN) to exploit temporal speech information. Experimental results demonstrate that our sVAD achieves remarkable noise robustness and meanwhile maintains low power consumption and a small footprint, making it a promising solution for real-world VAD applications.

Modeling User Viewing Flow Using Large Language Models for Article Recommendation

This paper proposes the User Viewing Flow Modeling (SINGLE) method for the article recommendation task, which models the user constant preference and instant interest from user-clicked articles. Specifically, we first employ a user constant viewing flow modeling method to summarize the user's general interest to recommend articles. In this case, we utilize Large Language Models (LLMs) to capture constant user preferences from previously clicked articles, such as skills and positions. Then we design the user instant viewing flow modeling method to build interactions between user-clicked article history and candidate articles. It attentively reads the representations of user-clicked articles and aims to learn the user's different interest views to match the candidate article. Our experimental results on the Alibaba Technology Association (ATA) website show the advantage of SINGLE, achieving a 2.4% improvement over previous baseline models in the online A/B test. Our further analyses illustrate that SINGLE has the ability to build a more tailored recommendation system by mimicking different article viewing behaviors of users and recommending more appropriate and diverse articles to match user interests.

Anchored spirals in the driven curvature flow approximation

We study existence, asymptotics, and stability of spiral waves in a driven curvature approximation, supplemented with an anchoring condition on a circle of finite radius. We analyze the motion of curves written as graphs in polar coordinates, finding spiral waves as rigidly rotating shapes. The existence analysis reduces to a planar ODE and asymptotics are given through center manifold expansions. In the limit of a large core, we find rotation frequencies and corrections starting form a problem without curvature corrections. Finally, we demonstrate orbital stability of spiral waves by exploiting a comparison principle inherent to curvature driven flow. \end{abstract}

Assessing Mass Loss and Stellar-to-Halo Mass Ratio of Satellite Galaxies: A Galaxy-Galaxy Lensing Approach Utilizing DECaLS DR8 Data

The galaxy-galaxy lensing technique allows us to measure the subhalo mass of satellite galaxies, studying their mass loss and evolution within galaxy clusters and providing direct observational validation for theories of galaxy formation. In this study, we use the weak gravitational lensing observations from DECaLS DR8, in combination with the redMaPPer galaxy cluster catalog from Sloan Digital Sky Survey data (SDSS) DR8 to accurately measure the dark matter halo mass of satellite galaxies. We confirm a significant increase in the stellar-to-halo mass ratio of satellite galaxies with their halo-centric radius, indicating clear evidence of mass loss due to tidal stripping. Additionally, we find that this mass loss is strongly dependent on the mass of the satellite galaxies, with satellite galaxies above $10^{11}~{\rm M_{\odot}/h}$ experiencing more pronounced mass loss compared to lower mass satellites, reaching 86\% at projected halo-centric radius $0.5R_{\rm 200c}$. The average mass loss rate, when not considering halo-centric radius, displays a U-shaped variation with stellar mass, with galaxies of approximately $4\times10^{10}~{\rm M_{\odot}/h}$ exhibiting the least mass loss, around 60\%. We compare our results with state-of-the-art hydrodynamical numerical simulations and find that the satellite galaxy stellar-to-halo mass ratio in the outskirts of galaxy clusters is higher compared to the predictions of the Illustris-TNG project about factor 5. Furthermore, the Illustris-TNG project's numerical simulations did not predict the observed dependence of satellite galaxy mass loss rate on satellite galaxy mass.

Two-step Newton's method for deflation-one singular zeros of analytic systems

We propose a two-step Newton's method for refining an approximation of a singular zero whose deflation process terminates after one step, also known as a deflation-one singularity. Given an isolated singular zero of a square analytic system, our algorithm exploits an invertible linear operator obtained by combining the Jacobian and a projection of the Hessian in the direction of the kernel of the Jacobian. We prove the quadratic convergence of the two-step Newton method when it is applied to an approximation of a deflation-one singular zero. Also, the algorithm requires a smaller size of matrices than the existing methods, making it more efficient. We demonstrate examples and experiments to show the efficiency of the method.

Dynamic Semantic Compression for CNN Inference in Multi-access Edge Computing: A Graph Reinforcement Learning-based Autoencoder

This paper studies the computational offloading of CNN inference in dynamic multi-access edge computing (MEC) networks. To address the uncertainties in communication time and computation resource availability, we propose a novel semantic compression method, autoencoder-based CNN architecture (AECNN), for effective semantic extraction and compression in partial offloading. In the semantic encoder, we introduce a feature compression module based on the channel attention mechanism in CNNs, to compress intermediate data by selecting the most informative features. In the semantic decoder, we design a lightweight decoder to reconstruct the intermediate data through learning from the received compressed data to improve accuracy. To effectively trade-off communication, computation, and inference accuracy, we design a reward function and formulate the offloading problem of CNN inference as a maximization problem with the goal of maximizing the average inference accuracy and throughput over the long term. To address this maximization problem, we propose a graph reinforcement learning-based AECNN (GRL-AECNN) method, which outperforms existing works DROO-AECNN, GRL-BottleNet++ and GRL-DeepJSCC under different dynamic scenarios. This highlights the advantages of GRL-AECNN in offloading decision-making in dynamic MEC.

Optically Levitated Nanoparticles as Receiving Antennas for Low Frequency Wireless Communication

Low-frequency (LF) wireless communications play a crucial role in ensuring anti-interference, long-range, and efficient communication across various environments. However, in conventional LF communication systems, their antenna size is required to be inversely proportional to the wavelength, so that their mobility and flexibility are greatly limited. Here we introduce a novel prototype of LF receiving antennas based on optically levitated nanoparticles, which overcomes the size-frequency limitation to reduce the antenna size to the hundred-nanometer scale. These charged particles are extremely sensitive to external electric field as mechanical resonators, and their resonant frequencies are adjustable. The effectiveness of these antennas was experimentally demonstrated by using the frequency shift keying (2FSK) modulation scheme. The experimental results indicate a correlation between error rate and factors such as transmission rate, signal strength, and vacuum degree with a signal strength of approximately 0.1V/m and a bit error rate below 0.1%. This advancement in leveraging levitated particle mechanical resonators (LPMRs) as LF antennas marks a significant stride in long-distance communication technology.

The Mood of the Sunlight: Visualization of the Sunlight Data for Public Art

The application of data visualization in public art attracts increasing attention. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a visualization method for sunlight data collected over a long period of time with an industrial camera. The proposed method makes use of the saturation and value information of collected sunlight image data in Hue Saturation Value color model to show the variation of the mood of the sunlight. Specifically, we create visual patterns with a rotating planet gear, which has an intuitively consistent geometric meaning with HSV color model and the planetary motion. Due to the variation of the sunlight data over time, the generated visual pattern presents a periodic variation that corresponds to the changing mood of the sunlight. Furthermore, we also use the sunlight data to generate music as another form of data representation. Two public artworks have been created with the above visualization and auralization methods and displayed on an exhibition held at China Resources Tower, Shenzhen, China. This work is a typical practice of creating public installations with data visualization technology, giving a glimpse into the many ways science and art intersect.

BAE-Net: A Low complexity and high fidelity Bandwidth-Adaptive neural network for speech super-resolution

Speech bandwidth extension (BWE) has demonstrated promising performance in enhancing the perceptual speech quality in real communication systems. Most existing BWE researches primarily focus on fixed upsampling ratios, disregarding the fact that the effective bandwidth of captured audio may fluctuate frequently due to various capturing devices and transmission conditions. In this paper, we propose a novel streaming adaptive bandwidth extension solution dubbed BAE-Net, which is suitable to handle the low-resolution speech with unknown and varying effective bandwidth. To address the challenges of recovering both the high-frequency magnitude and phase speech content blindly, we devise a dual-stream architecture that incorporates the magnitude inpainting and phase refinement. For potential applications on edge devices, this paper also introduces BAE-NET-lite, which is a lightweight, streaming and efficient framework. Quantitative results demonstrate the superiority of BAE-Net in terms of both performance and computational efficiency when compared with existing state-of-the-art BWE methods.

MaNGA DynPop -- IV. Stacked total density profile of galaxy groups and clusters from combining dynamical models of integral-field stellar kinematics and galaxy-galaxy lensing

We present the measurement of total and stellar/dark matter decomposed mass density profile around a sample of galaxy groups and clusters with dynamical masses derived from integral-field stellar kinematics from the MaNGA survey in Paper I and weak lensing derived from the DECaLS imaging survey. Combining the two data sets enables accurate measurement of the radial density distribution from several kpc to Mpc scales. Intriguingly, we find that the excess surface density derived from stellar kinematics in the inner region cannot be explained by simply adding an NFW dark matter halo extrapolated from lensing measurement at a larger scale to a stellar mass component derived from the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalogue. We find that a good fit to both data sets requires a stellar mass normalization about 3 times higher than that derived from the NSA catalogue, which would require an unrealistically too-heavy initial mass function for stellar mass estimation. If we keep the stellar mass normalization to that of the NSA catalogue but allow a varying inner dark matter density profile, we obtain an asymptotic slope of $γ_{\rm gnfw}$= $1.82_{-0.25}^{+0.15}$ and $γ_{\rm gnfw}$= $1.48_{-0.41}^{+0.20}$ for the group bin and the cluster bin respectively, significantly steeper than the NFW case. We also compare the total mass inner density slopes with those from TNG300 and find that the values from the simulation are lower than the observation by about $2σ$ level.

Minimum-Time Trajectory Optimization With Data-Based Models: A Linear Programming Approach

In this paper, we develop a computationally-efficient approach to minimum-time trajectory optimization using input-output data-based models, to produce an end-to-end data-to-control solution to time-optimal planning/control of dynamic systems and hence facilitate their autonomous operation. The approach integrates a non-parametric data-based model for trajectory prediction and a continuous optimization formulation based on an exponential weighting scheme for minimum-time trajectory planning. The optimization problem in its final form is a linear program and is easy to solve. We validate the approach and illustrate its application with a spacecraft relative motion planning problem.
