Confinement and Bose Condensation in Gauge Theory of High-Tc Superconductors

The issue of confinement and bose condensation is studied for gauge models of high-Tc superconductors. First the Abelian-Higgs model in (2+1)D, i.e., XY-model coupled to lattice gauge field $a_μ$ with coupling $g$, is studied taking into account both the instantons and vortices. This model corresponds to integer filling of the bosons, and can be mapped to a dual superconductor. Our main resut is that the instantons introduce a term which couples linearly to the dual superconductor order parameter, and tend to pin its phase. As a result the vortex condensation always occurs due to the instantons, and the Meissner effect for the gauge field $a_μ$ is absent, although $a_μ$ is massive. This state is essentially the same as the confining phase of the pure gauge model. Away from integer filling, a ``magnetic field'' $μ$ (the chemical potential of the bosons) is applied to this dual superconductor. Then the Higgs phase revives in the case of weak $g$ and large $x$, where vortices do not condense in spite of the instantons. In the opposite case, i.e., strong $g$ and small $x$, phase separation occurs, forming either microscopic patches or macroscopic stripe domains of the Mott insulating state.

Spin and orbital ordering in double-layered manganites

We study theoretically the phase diagram of the double-layered perovskite manganites taking into account the orbital degeneracy, the strong Coulombic repulsion, and the coupling with the lattice deformation. Observed spin structural changes as the increased doping are explained in terms of the orbital ordering and the bond-length dependence of the hopping integral along $c$-axis. Temperature dependence of the neutron diffraction peak corresponding to the canting structure is also explained. Comparison with the 3D cubic system is made.

An SO(5) model of p-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism

We study an SO(5) model unifying p-wave superconductivity and ferromagnetism. If only a single p-wave pairing wavefunction is involved, the p-wave superconducting (pSC) and ferromagnetic (F) states can be unified to form 10-dimensional multiplet of SO(5). The collective modes in pSC and F states are studied from this viewpoint in terms of a non-linear sigma model.

Transport through a 1D Mott-Hubbard insulator of finite length

Transport through a 1D Mott-Hubbard insulator of a finite length $L$ is studied beyond perturbative approach. At special value of the low energy constant of the interaction we have mapped the problem onto the exactly solvable models and found current vs. voltage $V$ at high temperature $T>max(m,T_L)$ and at low energy $T,V<T_L$ ($T_L=v_c/L$; $v_c:$ charge velocity). The result shows that for the strong interaction creating a large Mott-Hubbard gap $2m \gg T_L $ inside the wire, the transport is suppressed near half-filling everywhere inside the gap except for an exponentially small region of $V,T < T_L exp(-2m/T_L)$.

Fractional charge in transport through a 1D correlated insulator of finite length

Transport through a one channel wire of length $L$ confined between two leads is examined when the 1D electron system has an energy gap $2M$: $M > T_L \equiv v_c/L$ induced by the interaction in charge mode ($v_c$: charge velocity in the wire). In spinless case the transformation of the leads electrons into the charge density wave solitons of fractional charge $q$ entails a non-trivial low energy crossover from the Fermi liquid behavior below the crossover energy $T_x \propto \sqrt{T_L M} e^{-M /[T_L(1-q^2)]}$ to the insulator one with the fractional charge in current vs. voltage, conductance vs. temperature, and in shot noise. Similar behavior is predicted for the Mott insulator of filling factor $ν= integer/(2 m')$.

Phase Diagram in Manganese Oxides

We study theoretically the phase diagram of perovskite manganites taking into account the double degeneracy of the $e_g$ orbitals in a $Mn^{3+}$ ion. A rich phase diagram is obtained in the mean field theory at zero temperature as functions of $x$ (hole concentration) and $J_S$ (antiferromagnetic interaction between $t_{2g}$ spins). The global features of the phase diagram is understood in terms of the superexchange and double exchange interactions, which are strongly depends on types of the occupied $e_g$ orbitals. The strong electron correlation induces the orbital polarization, which controls the dimension of the conduction band. A sequential change of the spin and orbital structures with doping holes is consistent with the recent experiments. In particular, metallic A-type (layered) antiferromagnetic state is found for $x\sim0.5$ with the uniform $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital ordering. Effects of the Jahn-Teller distortion are also studied. A short version of this paper has been already published (to appear in PRB-rapid June), but this paper contains additional and more detailed results.

Lattice Instability in the Spin-Ladder System under Magnetic Field

We study theoretically the lattice instability in the spin gap systems under magnetic field. With the magnetic field larger than a critical value h_{c1}, the spin gap is collapsed and the magnetization arises. We found that the lattice distortion occurs in the spin-ladder at an incommensurate wavevector corresponding to the magnetization, while it does not occur in the Haldane system. At low temperatures the magnetization curve shows a first order phase transition with this lattice distortion.

Effects of long-range Coulomb interaction on the quantum transport in fractional quantum Hall edges

We study the effects of long-range Coulomb interaction (LRCI) on the quantum transport in FQH edges with $ν=1/(2k+1)$. We consider two models, i.e., the quasi-particle tunneling (QPT) model and the electron tunneling (ET) model at the point contact. The tunneling conductance $G(T)$ is obtained using the renormalization group treatment. In QPT model, it is found that LRCI further reduces $G(T)$ below a crossover temperature $Λ_w$. In ET model, on the other hand, there is a temeperature region where LRCI enhances $G(T)$, and nonmonotonic temperature dependence is possible.

Quantum transport in $ν=2/3$ spin-singlet quantum Hall edges

Tunneling conductance $G(T)$ through a constricted point contact is studied for the $ν=2/3$ spin-singlet edges. Including spin-flip tunneling, Zeeman splitting and random magnetic impurities, we discuss the various crossovers of $G(T)$ as a function of the temperature $T$. The behavior of $G(T)$ is found to be quite different for spin-singlet and spin-polarized cases, and hence $G(T)$ is expected to serve as an experimental probe for the polarized-unpolarized transition at $ν=2/3$.

From Tomonaga-Luttinger to Fermi liquid in transport through a tunneling barrier

Finite length of a one channel wire results in crossover from a Tomonaga-Luttinger to Fermi liquid behavior with lowering energy scale. In condition that voltage drop $(V)$ mostly occurs across a tunnel barrier inside the wire we found coefficients of temperature/voltage expansion of low energy conductance as a function of constant of interaction, right and left traversal times. At higher voltage the finite length contribution exhibits oscillations related to both traversal times and becomes a slowly decaying correction to the scale-invariant $V^{1/g-1}$ dependence of the conductance.

Electron Correlation and Jahn-Teller Interaction in Manganese Oxides

The interplay between the electron repulsion $U$ and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interation $E_{LR}$ is studied with a large $d$ model for the ferromagnetic state of the manganese oxides. These two interactions collaborate to induce the local isospin (orbital) moments and reduce the bandwidth $B$. Especially the retardation effect of the Jahn-Teller phonon with the frequency $Ω$ is effective to reduce $B$, but the strong $Ω$-dependence occurs even when the Coulombic interaction is dominating ($ U >> E_{LR}$) as long as $E_{LR} > Ω$. The phonon spectrum consists of two components, i.e., the temperature independent sharp peak at $ω= {\tilde Ω} = Ω[(U +4 E_{LR})/U]^{1/2}$ and that corresponding to the Kondo peak. These results compared with the experiments suggest that $Ω<E_{LR} <U$ in the metallic manganese oxides.

Threshold features in transport through a 1D constriction

Suppression of electron current $ ΔI$ through a 1D channel of length $L$ connecting two Fermi liquid reservoirs is studied taking into account the Umklapp electron-electron interaction induced by a periodic potential. This interaction causes Hubbard gaps $E_H$ for $L \to \infty$. In the perturbative regime where $E_H \ll v_c/L$ ($v_c:$ charge velocity), and for small deviations $δn$ of the electron density from its commensurate values $- ΔI/V$ can diverge with some exponent as voltage or temperature $V,T$ decreases above $E_c=max(v_c/L,v_c δn)$, while it goes to zero below $E_c$. This results in a nonmonotonous behavior of the conductance.

Phase Diagram in R_{1-x}A_xMnO_3

We study the phase diagram of R_{1-x}A_xMnO_3 (R=La, Pr, Nd, Sm ; A=Ca, Sr, Ba) by taking into account the degeneracy of $e_g$ orbitals and the anisotropy of the transfer integral. The electron-electron interaction is treated in the mean field approximation with the optimization of the spin and orbital structures. The global phase diagram is understood in terms of the two interactions, i.e., the super exchange interaction for small $x$ and the double exchange interaction for larger $x$ modified by the orbital degeneracy. The dimensionality of the electronic energy band resulting from the orbital structure is essential to determine the phase diagram. The effects of the Jahn-Teller distortion are also studied.

Spin-Charge Separation in Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectra

The implications of the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the issue of spin-charge separation are discussed from the viewpoint of slave-particle RVB theories. It is pointed out that the non-local phase string is essential to reproduce the two-peak structure experimentally observed in SrCuO_2. The comparison between 1D and 2D cases is also made.

Kondo Effect in High-T_c Cuprates

We study the Kondo effect due to the nonmagnetic impurity, e.g., Zn, in high-T_c cuprates based on the spin-change separated state. In the optimal or overdoped case with the Kondo screening, the residual resistivity is dominated by the spinons while the T-dependent part determined by the holons. This gives $ρ(T) = { {4 \hbar} /{e^2}} { { n_{imp.}} /{(1-x)}} + {{αT} / x}$ (x: hole concentration,$n_{imp.}$: impurity concentration, $α$: constant ), which is in agreement with experiments. In the underdoped region with the pseudo spin gap, an SU(2) formulation predicts that the holon phase shift is related to the formation of the local spin moment, and hence the residual resistivity is given by $ρ_{res.} = { {4 \hbar} /{ e^2}} { { n_{imp.}}/{x}} $, which is also consistent with the experiments. The magnetic impurity case, e.g., Ni, is also discussed.

An SU(2) Formulation of the t-J model: Application to Underdoped Cuprates

We develop a slave-boson theory for the t-J model at finite doping which respect a SU(2) symmetry -- a symmetry previously known to be important at half filling. The mean field phase diagram is found to be consistent with the phases observed in the cuprate superconductors, which contains d-wave superconductor, spin gap, strange metal, and Fermi liquid phases. The spin gap phase is best understood as the staggered flux phase, which is nevertheless translationally invariant for physical quantities. The physical electron spectral function shows small Fermi segments at low doping which continuously evolve into the large Fermi surface at high doping concentrations. The close relation between the SU(2) and the U(1) slave-boson theory is discussed. The low energy effective theory for the low lying fluctuations is derived, and new lying modes (which were over looked in the U(1) theory) are identified.

Orbital Liquid in Perovskite Transition-Metal Oxides

We study the effects of the degeneracy of the $e_g$ orbitals as well as the double exchange interaction with $t_{2g}$ spins in perovskite transition-metal oxides. In addition to the spin field ${\vec S}_i$, the isospin field ${\vec T}_i$ is introduced to describe the orbital degrees of freedom. The isospin is the quantum dynamical variable, and is represented by the boson with a constraint. The dispersion of this boson is flat along $(π/a,π/a,k_z)$ ($a$: lattice constant) and the other two equivalent directions. This enables the orbital disordered phase down to low temperatures. We interpret some of the anomalous experiments, i.e., optical absorption and d.c. resistivity, in the low temperature ferromagnetic phase of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ with $x > 0.2$ in terms of this orbital liquid picture.

Edge Modes in the Hierarchical Fractional Quantum Hall Liquids with Coulomb Interaction

Edge modes are studied for the hierarchical fractional quantum Hall liquids (FQHL) by treating the edge and bulk in a unified fashion. Within the RPA treatment of the composite boson effective theory with Coulomb interaction, one edge magneto-plasmon is shown to be the eigen-mode of the system. This mode decays algebraically perpendicular to the edge. All the other modes decay faster than power-law, and correspond to the neutral modes. However these neutral modes generally couple with the electromagnetic field within the magnetic length from the edge. The time-of-flight experiment in the $ν=2/3$ FQHL is discussed in terms of these results.
