From $Z$ to $a$: High-temperature relations, subleading semi-universality, and conformal anomalies

The free energy of any CFT, $ \ln Z(\beta; \omega_i)$, admits two expansions: high temperature ($\beta \rightarrow 0$) and fast rotation ($\omega_i \rightarrow 1$). We demonstrate that locality of the thermal effective action forces $\ln Z$ to take a simple analytic form at all orders in the high temperature expansion, and further imposes an infinite number of sharp relations on the coefficients in this expansion. All are homogeneous, except at order $\beta^1$ due to the Weyl anomaly. From this, the $a$-anomaly can be extracted from the partition function. The relations resum in the fast-spinning expansion into differential equations in $\beta$ obeyed by the semi-universal limit and its corrections. We verify the relations in a variety of CFTs. We generalize to any even $d$, but find no similar relations at odd $d$.

Chiral Tube Algebras I: Topological Defect Lines, Twisted Modules, and Finite Gauging

Chiral algebras and topological defect lines (TDLs) represent two complementary notions of symmetry in 2d conformal field theories. In this paper, we introduce chiral tube algebras to unify and extend these two notions. Chiral tube algebras generalize chiral algebras in two ways. First, they extend the action of chiral algebras beyond the local Hilbert space to include defect Hilbert spaces twisted by TDLs. Second, they allow for non-local chiral currents attached by TDLs and thus can map between different defect Hilbert spaces, analogous to the tube algebras of TDLs. Since local chiral currents can become non-local after finite gauging, chiral tube algebras provide a natural framework for describing the image of chiral algebras under such gauging. We illustrate this framework through a variety of examples that generalize familiar chiral algebras, including Kac-Moody algebras, $\mathcal{W}$ algebras, superconformal algebras, and their orbifolds/bosonizations. We construct their irreducible modules, which are isomorphic to twisted modules of the corresponding chiral algebras, and use them to organize local and defect Hilbert spaces. In a subsequent paper, we will study chiral tube algebras generated by non-local chiral currents with fractional spins, which have no counterparts in chiral algebras.

Descending into the Modular Bootstrap

In this paper, we attempt to explore the landscape of two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) by efficiently searching for numerical solutions to the modular bootstrap equation using machine-learning-style optimization. The torus partition function of a 2d CFT is fixed by the spectrum of its primary operators and its chiral algebra, which we take to be the Virasoro algebra with $c>1$. We translate the requirement that this partition function is modular invariant into a loss function, which we then minimize to identify possible primary spectra. Our approach involves two technical innovations that facilitate finding reliable candidate CFTs. The first is a strategy to estimate the uncertainty associated with truncating the spectrum to the lowest dimension operators. The second is the use of a new singular-value-based optimizer (Sven) that is more effective than gradient descent at navigating the hierarchical structure of the loss landscape. We numerically construct candidate truncated CFT partition functions with central charges between 1 and $\frac{8}{7}$, a range devoid of known examples, and argue that these candidates likely come from a continuous space of modular bootstrap solutions. We also provide evidence for a more stringent constraint on the spectral gap near $c = 1$ than the existing bound of $\Delta_{\rm gap} \le \frac{c}{6} + \frac{1}{3}$.

Semi-universality of CFT$_d$ entropy at large spin

The thermal partition function, $Z$, of a $CFT_d$ on $S^{d-1}$ is parameterized by the inverse temperature $\beta$ along with $\lfloor d/2\rfloor$ angular velocities $\omega_i$. In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of this partition function when $n$ of the $\omega_i$ are scaled to unity (the largest allowed value) at fixed values of the other $(\lfloor d/2\rfloor-n)$ angular velocities. We argue that $\ln Z$ develops a simple pole in $(1-\omega_i)$ for each $\omega_i$ that is scaled to unity. The residue of this product of poles is a theory dependent (so non-universal) function of $\beta$ and the fixed angular velocities. The inverse Laplace transformation of this partition function constrains the functional form of the field theory entropy as a function of charges in a limit in which angular momenta and the twist are scaled as follows. While $n$ special angular momenta $J_1\ldots J_n$ are scaled to infinity, the twist and the other angular momenta - collectively denoted $x_i$ - are also taken to infinity but at the slower rate that ensures that the scaled charges $x_i/(J_1 J_2 \ldots J_n)^{\frac{1}{n+1}}$ are held fixed. In this limit, we demonstrate that the scaled entropy $S/(J_1 J_2 \ldots J_n)^{\frac{1}{n+1}}$ depends only on the $\lfloor d/2\rfloor-n+1$ scaled charges defined above (the precise form of this dependence is non-universal). We verify our predictions (and compute all non-universal functions) in the case of free scalar theories (which show surprisingly rich behaviour) as well as large $N$, strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ Yang Mills theory. The last theory is analyzed in the bulk via the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the scaling limit described above, its phase diagram displays sharp phase transitions between black hole, grey galaxy, and thermal gas phases.

Generalized Symmetries and Deformations of Symmetric Product Orbifolds

We construct generalized symmetries in two-dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs $\text{Sym}^N(\mathcal{T}),$ for a generic seed CFT $\mathcal{T}$. These symmetries are more general than the universal and maximally symmetric ones previously constructed. We show that, up to one fine-tuned example when the number of copies $N$ equals four, the only symmetries that can be preserved under twisted sector marginal deformations are invertible and maximally symmetric. The results are obtained in two ways. First, using the mathematical machinery of $G$-equivariantization of fusion categories, and second, via the projector construction of topological defect lines. As an application, we classify all preserved symmetries in symmetric product orbifold CFTs with the seed CFT given by any $A$-series $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ minimal model. We comment on the implications of our results for holography.

Properties of scalar partition functions of 2d CFTs

We study the spectrum of scalar primary operators in any two-dimensional conformal field theory. We show that the scalars alone obey a nontrivial crossing equation. This extends previous work that derived a similar equation for Narain conformal field theories. Additionally, we show that at high temperature, the difference between the true scalar partition function and the one predicted from a semiclassical gravity calculation is controlled by: the modular integral of the partition function, the light states of the theory, and an infinite series terms directly related to the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We give several numerical examples and compute their modular integrals.

Resurgence in Liouville Theory

Liouville conformal field theory is a prototypical example of an exactly solvable quantum field theory, in the sense that the correlation functions in an arbitrary background can be determined exactly using only the constraints of unitarity and crossing symmetry. For example, the three point correlation functions are given by the famous formula of Dorn-Otto-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (DOZZ). Unlike many other exactly solvable theories, Liouville theory has a continuously tunable parameter -- essentially $\hbar$ -- which is related to the central charge of the theory. Here we investigate the nature of the perturbative expansion in powers of $\hbar$, which is the loop expansion around a semi-classical solution. We show that the perturbative coefficients grow factorially, as expected of a Feynman diagram expansion, and take the form of an asymptotic series. We identify the singularities in the Borel plane, and show that they are associated with complex instanton solutions of Liouville theory; they correspond precisely to the complex solutions described by Harlow, Maltz, and Witten. Both single- and multi-valued solutions of Liouville appear. We show that the perturbative loop expansions around these different saddle points mix in the way expected for a trans-series expansion. Thus Liouville theory provides a calculable example of a quantum field theory where perturbative and instanton contributions can be summed up and assembled into a finite answer.

Angular fractals in thermal QFT

We show that thermal effective field theory controls the long-distance expansion of the partition function of a $d$-dimensional QFT, with an insertion of any finite-order spatial isometry. Consequently, the thermal partition function on a sphere displays a fractal-like structure as a function of angular twist, reminiscent of the behavior of a modular form near the real line. As an example application, we find that for CFTs, the effective free energy of even-spin minus odd-spin operators at high temperature is smaller than the usual free energy by a factor of $1/2^d$. Near certain rational angles, the partition function receives subleading contributions from "Kaluza-Klein vortex defects" in the thermal EFT, which we classify. We illustrate our results with examples in free and holographic theories, and also discuss nonperturbative corrections from worldline instantons.

Higher $d$ Eisenstein Series and a Duality-Invariant Distance Measure

The Petersson inner product is a natural inner product on the space of modular invariant functions. We derive a formula, written as a convergent sum over elementary functions, for the inner product $E_s(G,B)$ of the real analytic Eisenstein series $E_s(\tau, \bar{\tau})$ and a general point in Narain moduli space. We also discuss the utility of the Petersson inner product as a distance measure on the space of 2d CFTs, and apply our procedure to evaluate this distance in various examples.

Universal Asymptotics for High Energy CFT Data

Equilibrium finite temperature observables of a CFT can be described by a local effective action for background fields -- a "thermal effective action." This effective action determines the asymptotic density of states of a CFT as a detailed function of dimension and spin. We discuss subleading perturbative and nonperturbative corrections to the density, comparing with free and holographic examples. We furthermore show how to use the thermal effective action on more complicated geometries at special locations called "hot spots." The hot spot idea makes a prediction for a CFT partition function on a higher-dimensional version of a genus-2 Riemann surface, in a particular high temperature limit. By decomposing the partition function into a novel higher-dimensional version of genus-2 conformal blocks (which we compute at large scaling dimension), we extract the asymptotic density of heavy-heavy-heavy OPE coefficients in a higher-dimensional CFT. We also compute asymptotics of thermal 1-point functions using the same techniques.

Resurgence, Conformal Blocks, and the Sum over Geometries in Quantum Gravity

In two dimensional conformal field theories the limit of large central charge plays the role of a semi-classical limit. Certain universal observables, such as conformal blocks involving the exchange of the identity operator, can be expanded around this classical limit in powers of the central charge $c$. This expansion is an asymptotic series, so - via the same resurgence analysis familiar from quantum mechanics - necessitates the existence of non-perturbative effects. In the case of identity conformal blocks, these new effects have a simple interpretation: the CFT must possess new primary operators with dimension of order the central charge. This constrains the data of CFTs with large central charge in a way that is similar to (but distinct from) the conformal bootstrap. We study this phenomenon in three ways: numerically, analytically using Zamolodchikov's recursion relations, and by considering non-unitary minimal models with large (negative) central charge. In the holographic dual to a CFT$_2$, the expansion in powers of $c$ is the perturbative loop expansion in powers of $\hbar$. So our results imply that the graviton loop expansion is an asymptotic series, whose cure requires the inclusion of new saddle points in the gravitational path integral. In certain cases these saddle points have a simple interpretation: they are conical excesses, particle-like states with negative mass which are not in the physical spectrum but nevertheless appear as non-manifold saddle points that control the asymptotic behaviour of the loop expansion. This phenomenon also has an interpretation in $SL(2,{\mathbb R})$ Chern-Simons theory, where the non-perturbative effects are associated with the non-Teichm\"uller component of the moduli space of flat connections.

S-duality in $T\bar{T}$-deformed CFT

$T\bar{T}$ deformed conformal field theories can be reformulated as worldsheet theories of non-critical strings. We use this correspondence to compute and study the $T\bar{T}$ deformed partition sum of a symmetric product CFT. We find that it takes the form of a partition sum of a second quantized string theory with a worldsheet given by the product of the seed CFT and a gaussian sigma model with the two-torus as target space. We show that deformed symmetric product theory admits a natural UV completion that exhibits a strong weak coupling $\mathbb{Z}_2$ duality that interchanges the momentum and winding numbers and maps the $T\bar{T}$-coupling $\lambda$ to its inverse $1/\lambda$. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ duality is part of a full O$(2,2,\mathbb{Z})$-duality group that includes a PSL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ acting on the complexified $T\bar{T}$ coupling. The duality symmetry eliminates the appearance of complex energies at strong coupling for all seed CFTs with central charge $c\leq 6$.

The Stranger Things of Symmetric Product Orbifold CFTs

Symmetric product orbifold theories are valuable due to their universal features at large $N$. Here we will demonstrate that they have features that are not as pervasive: we provide evidence of strange behaviour under deformations within their moduli space. To this end, we consider the symmetric product orbifold of tensor products of $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-Virasoro minimal models, and classify them according to two criteria. The first criterion is the existence of a single-trace twisted exactly marginal operator that triggers the deformation. The second criterion is a sparseness condition on the growth of light states in the elliptic genera. In this context we encounter a strange variety: theories that obey the first criterion but the second criterion falls into a Hagedorn-like growth. We explain why this may be counter-intuitive and discuss how it might be accounted for in conformal perturbation theory. We also find a new infinite class of theories that obey both criteria, which are necessary conditions for each moduli space to contain a supergravity point.

Scalar Modular Bootstrap and Zeros of the Riemann Zeta Function

Using the technology of harmonic analysis, we derive a crossing equation that acts only on the scalar primary operators of any two-dimensional conformal field theory with $U(1)^c$ symmetry. From this crossing equation, we derive bounds on the scalar gap of all such theories. Rather remarkably, our crossing equation contains information about all nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. As a result, we rephrase the Riemann hypothesis purely as a statement about the asymptotic density of scalar operators in certain two-dimensional conformal field theories. We discuss generalizations to theories with only Virasoro symmetry.

Harmonic analysis of 2d CFT partition functions

We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of $c$ free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space $\mathbb H/SL(2,\mathbb Z)$, and of target space moduli space $O(c,c;\mathbb Z)\backslash O(c,c;\mathbb R)/O(c)\times O(c)$. This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS$_3$ gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

Lifting 1/4-BPS States in $AdS_3\times S^3 \times T^4$

We establish a framework for doing second order conformal perturbation theory for the symmetric orbifold Sym$^N(T^4)$ to all orders in $N$. This allows us to compute how 1/4-BPS states of the D1-D5 system on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ are lifted as we move away from the orbifold point. As an application we confirm a previous observation that in the large $N$ limit not all 1/4-BPS states that can be lifted do get lifted. This provides evidence that the supersymmetric index actually undercounts the number of 1/4-BPS states at a generic point in the moduli space.

Narain to Narnia

We generalize the holographic correspondence between topological gravity coupled to an abelian Chern-Simons theory in three dimensions and an ensemble average of Narain's family of massless free bosons in two dimensions, discovered by Afkhami-Jeddi et al. and by Maloney and Witten. We find that the correspondence also works for toroidal orbifolds but not for K3 or Calabi-Yau sigma-models and not always for the minimal models. We conjecture that the correspondence requires that the central charge is equal to the critical central charge defined by the asymptotic density of states of the chiral algebra. For toroidal orbifolds, we extend the holographic correspondence to correlation functions of twist operators by using topological properties of rational tangles in the three-dimensional ball, which represent configurations of vortices associated to a discrete gauge symmetry.

On Rational Points in CFT Moduli Spaces

Motivated by the search for rational points in moduli spaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories, we investigate how points with enhanced symmetry algebras are distributed there. We first study the bosonic sigma-model with $S^1$ target space in detail and uncover hitherto unknown features. We find for instance that the vanishing of the twist gap, though true for the $S^1$ example, does not automatically follow from enhanced symmetry points being dense in the moduli space. We then explore the supersymmetric sigma-model on K3 by perturbing away from the torus orbifold locus. Though we do not reach a definite conclusion on the distribution of enhanced symmetry points in the K3 moduli space, we make several observations on how chiral currents can emerge and disappear under conformal perturbation theory.
