On Rational Points in CFT Moduli Spaces

Motivated by the search for rational points in moduli spaces of two-dimensional conformal field theories, we investigate how points with enhanced symmetry algebras are distributed there. We first study the bosonic sigma-model with $S^1$ target space in detail and uncover hitherto unknown features. We find for instance that the vanishing of the twist gap, though true for the $S^1$ example, does not automatically follow from enhanced symmetry points being dense in the moduli space. We then explore the supersymmetric sigma-model on K3 by perturbing away from the torus orbifold locus. Though we do not reach a definite conclusion on the distribution of enhanced symmetry points in the K3 moduli space, we make several observations on how chiral currents can emerge and disappear under conformal perturbation theory.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Minimal Models: A Holographic Needle in a Symmetric Orbifold Haystack

We explore large-$N$ symmetric orbifolds of the $\mathcal N=2$ minimal models, and find evidence that their moduli spaces each contain a supergravity point. We identify single-trace exactly marginal operators that deform them away from the symmetric orbifold locus. We also show that their elliptic genera exhibit slow growth consistent with supergravity spectra in AdS$_3$. We thus propose an infinite family of new holographic CFTs.

Lessons from the Ramond sector

We revisit the consistency of torus partition functions in (1+1)$d$ fermionic conformal field theories, combining traditional ingredients of modular invariance/covariance with a modernized understanding of bosonization/fermionization dualities. Various lessons can be learned by simply examining the oft-ignored Ramond sector. For several extremal/kinky modular functions in the bootstrap literature, we can either rule out or identify the underlying theory. We also revisit the ${\cal N} = 1$ Maloney-Witten partition function by calculating the spectrum in the Ramond sector, and further extending it to include the modular sum of seed Ramond characters. Finally, we perform the full ${\cal N} = 1$ RNS modular bootstrap and obtain new universal results on the existence of relevant deformations preserving different amounts of supersymmetry.

Pure Gravity and Conical Defects

We revisit the spectrum of pure quantum gravity in AdS$_3$. The computation of the torus partition function will -- if computed using a gravitational path integral that includes only smooth saddle points -- lead to a density of states which is not physically sensible, as it has a negative degeneracy of states for some energies and spins. We consider a minimal cure for this non-unitarity of the pure gravity partition function, which involves the inclusion of additional states below the black hole threshold. We propose a geometric interpretation for these extra states: they are conical defects with deficit angle $2π(1-1/N)$, where $N$ is a positive integer. That only integer values of $N$ should be included can be seen from a modular bootstrap argument, and leads us to propose a modest extension of the set of saddle-point configurations that contribute to the gravitational path integral: one should sum over orbifolds in addition to smooth manifolds. These orbifold states are below the black hole threshold and are regarded as massive particles in AdS, but they are not perturbative states: they are too heavy to form multi-particle bound states. We compute the one-loop determinant for gravitons in these orbifold backgrounds, which confirms that the orbifold states are Virasoro primaries. We compute the gravitational partition function including the sum over these orbifolds and find a finite, modular invariant result; this finiteness involves a delicate cancellation between the infinite tower of orbifold states and an infinite number of instantons associated with $PSL(2,{\mathbb Z})$ images.

Twist Gap and Global Symmetry in Two Dimensions

We show that every compact, unitary two-dimensional CFT with an abelian conserved current has vanishing twist gap for charged primary fields with respect to the $\mathfrak{u}(1)\times$Virasoro algebra. This means that either the chiral algebra is enhanced by a charged primary field with zero twist or there is an infinite family of charged primary fields that accumulate to zero twist.

Lightcone Modular Bootstrap and Pure Gravity

We explore the large spin spectrum in two-dimensional conformal field theories with a finite twist gap, using the modular bootstrap in the lightcone limit. By recursively solving the modular crossing equations associated to different $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ elements, we identify the universal contribution to the density of large spin states from the vacuum in the dual channel. Our result takes the form of a sum over $PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ elements, whose leading term generalizes the usual Cardy formula to a wider regime. Rather curiously, the contribution to the density of states from the vacuum becomes negative in a specific limit, which can be canceled by that from a non-vacuum Virasoro primary whose twist is no bigger than $c-1\over16$. This suggests a new upper bound of $c-1\over 16$ on the twist gap in any $c>1$ compact, unitary conformal field theory with a vacuum, which would in particular imply that pure AdS$_3$ gravity does not exist. We confirm this negative density of states in the pure gravity partition function by Maloney, Witten, and Keller. We generalize our discussion to theories with $\mathcal{N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry, and find similar results.

The Most Irrational Rational Theories

We propose a two-parameter family of modular invariant partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) holographically dual to pure three-dimensional gravity in anti de Sitter space. Our two parameters control the central charge, and the representation of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. At large central charge, the partition function has a gap to the first nontrivial primary state of $\frac{c}{24}$. As the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation dimension gets large, the partition function exhibits some of the qualitative features of an irrational CFT. This, for instance, is captured in the behavior of the spectral form factor. As part of these analyses, we find similar behavior in the minimal model spectral form factor as $c$ approaches $1$.

Black holes and class groups

The theory of quadratic forms and class numbers has connections to many classical problems in number theory. Recently, class numbers have appeared in the study of black holes in string theory. We describe this connection and raise questions in the hope of inspiring new collaborations between number theorists and physicists.

Symmetries of the refined D1/D5 BPS spectrum

We examine the large $N$ 1/4-BPS spectrum of the symmetric orbifold CFT Sym$^N(M)$ deformed to the supergravity point in moduli space for $M= K3$ and $T^4$. We consider refinement under both left- and right-moving $SU(2)_R$ symmetries of the superconformal algebra, and decompose the spectrum into characters of the algebra. We find that at large $N$ the character decomposition satisfies an unusual property, in which the degeneracy only depends on a certain linear combination of left- and right-moving quantum numbers, suggesting deeper symmetry structure. Furthermore, we consider the action of discrete symmetry groups on these degeneracies, where certain subgroups of the Conway group are known to play a role. We also comment on the potential for larger discrete symmetry groups to appear in the large $N$ limit.

A Refined Count of BPS States in the D1/D5 System

We examine the low-lying quarter BPS spectrum of a 2d conformal field theory with target Sym$^N(K3)$ at various points in the moduli space, and look at a more refined count than the ordinary elliptic genus. We compute growth of the spectrum at both the symmetric orbifold point, as well as at the supergravity point in the moduli space. Finally we do a decomposition of the spectra into $\mathcal{N}=4$ characters and discuss possible relations to interesting symmetry groups. A similar analysis is done with $T^4$.

Counting spinning dyons in maximal supergravity: The Hodge-elliptic genus for tori

We consider $M$-theory compactified on $T^4 \times T^2$ and describe the count of spinning $1/8$-BPS states. This refines the classic count of Maldacena-Moore-Strominger in the physics literature and the recent mathematical work of Bryan-Oberdieck-Pandharipande-Yin, which studied reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants of abelian surfaces and threefolds. As in previous work on $K3 \times T^2$ compactification, we track angular momenta under both the $SU(2)_L$ and $SU(2)_R$ factors in the 5d little group, providing predictions for the relevant motivic curve counts.

Universal Bounds on Charged States in 2d CFT and 3d Gravity

We derive an explicit bound on the dimension of the lightest charged state in two dimensional conformal field theories with a global abelian symmetry. We find that the bound scales with $c$ and provide examples that parametrically saturate this bound. We also prove than any such theory must contain a state with charge-to-mass ratio above a minimal lower bound. We comment on the implications for charged states in three dimensional theories of gravity.

Emergent space-time and the supersymmetric index

It is of interest to find criteria on a 2d CFT which indicate that it gives rise to emergent gravity in a macroscopic 3d AdS space via holography. Symmetric orbifolds in the large $N$ limit have partition functions which are consistent with an emergent space-time string theory with $L_{\rm string} \sim L_{\rm AdS}$. For supersymmetric CFTs, the elliptic genus can serve as a sensitive probe of whether the SCFT admits a large radius gravity description with $L_{\rm string} \ll L_{\rm AdS}$ after one deforms away from the symmetric orbifold point in moduli space. We discuss several classes of constructions whose elliptic genera strongly hint that gravity with $L_{\rm Planck} \ll L_{\rm string} \ll L_{\rm AdS}$ can emerge at suitable points in moduli space.

Small Black Holes and Near-Extremal CFTs

Pure theories of AdS$_3$ quantum gravity are conjectured to be dual to CFTs with sparse spectra of light primary operators. The sparsest possible spectrum consistent with modular invariance includes only black hole states above the vacuum. Witten conjectured the existence of a family of extremal CFTs, which realize this spectrum for all admissible values of the central charge. We consider the quantum corrections to the classical spectrum, and propose a specific modification of Witten's conjecture which takes into account the existence of "small" black hole states. These have zero classical horizon area, with a calculable entropy attributed solely to loop effects. Our conjecture passes various consistency checks, especially when generalized to include theories with supersymmetry. In theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, this "near-extremal CFT" proposal precisely evades the no-go results of Gaberdiel et al.

An Extremal N=2 Superconformal Field Theory

We provide an example of an extremal chiral ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theory at $c=24$. The construction is based on a ${\mathbb Z}_2$ orbifold of the theory associated to the $A_{1}^{24}$ Niemeier lattice. The statespace is governed by representations of the sporadic group $M_{23}$.

On the elliptic genera of manifolds of Spin(7) holonomy

Superstring compactification on a manifold of Spin(7) holonomy gives rise to a 2d worldsheet conformal field theory with an extended supersymmetry algebra. The $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal algebra is extended by additional generators of spins 2 and 5/2, and instead of just superconformal symmetry one has a $c=12$ realization of the symmetry group $\mathcal{SW}(3/2,2)$. In this paper, we compute the characters of this supergroup, and decompose the elliptic genus of a general Spin(7) compactification in terms of these characters. We find suggestive relations to various sporadic groups, which are made more precise in a companion paper.

Elliptic Genera and 3d Gravity

We describe general constraints on the elliptic genus of a 2d supersymmetric conformal field theory which has a gravity dual with large radius in Planck units. We give examples of theories which do and do not satisfy the bounds we derive, by describing the elliptic genera of symmetric product orbifolds of $K3$, product manifolds, certain simple families of Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces, and symmetric products of the "Monster CFT." We discuss the distinction between theories with supergravity duals and those whose duals have strings at the scale set by the AdS curvature. Under natural assumptions we attempt to quantify the fraction of (2,2) supersymmetric conformal theories which admit a weakly curved gravity description, at large central charge.

Dynamical Spacetimes from Numerical Hydrodynamics

We numerically construct dynamical asymptotically-AdS$_4$ metrics by evaluating the fluid/gravity metric on numerical solutions of dissipative hydrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions. The resulting numerical metrics satisfy Einstein's equations in (3+1) dimensions to high accuracy.
