Development of BPM electronics for PIP-II at Fermilab

This paper presents the uTCA4.0-based BPM electronics for PIP-II, featuring four 250 MSPS ADCs and a Xilinx UltraScale+ MPSoC FPGA with 10 GbE uplink. Design elements include signal conditioning, clock, and thermal management. The FPGA performs signal processing, time tagging, digital down-conversion, and phase drift compensation. Position and phase resolution, and thermal stability - is validated through dedicated testing.

Instrumentation Developments and Beam Studies for the Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan LINAC Upgrade and New RFQ Front-End

Fermilab is developing a Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) to increase throughput of its proton source. The plan addresses hardware modifications to increase repetition rate and improve beam loss while ensuring viable operation of the proton source through 2025. The first phase of the PIP will enable the Fermilab proton source to deliver 1.8e17 protons per hour by mid-2013. As part of this initial upgrade, Fermilab plans to install a new front-end consisting of dual H- ion sources and a 201 MHz pulsed RFQ. This paper will present beam studies measurements of this new front-end and discuss new beam instrumentation upgrades for the Fermilab linac.

HOM Choice Study with Test Electronics for use as Beam Position Diagnostics in 3.9 GHz Accelerating Cavities in FLASH

Higher Order Modes (HOM) excited by the beam in the 3.9 GHz accelerating cavities in FLASH can be used for beam position diagnostics, as in a cavity beam position monitor. Previous studies of the modal choices within the complicated spectrum have revealed several options: cavity modes with strong coupling to the beam, and therefore with the potential for better position resolution, but which are propagating within all 4 cavities, and modes localized in the cavities or the beam pipes, which can give localized position information, but which provide worse resolution. For a better characterization of these options, a set of test electronics has been built, which can down-convert various frequencies between about 4 and 9 GHz to 70 MHz. The performance of various 20 MHz bands has been estimated. The best resolution of 20 μm was found for some propagating modes. Based on this study one band at ca. 5 GHz was chosen for high resolution position monitoring and a band at ca. 9 GHz for localized monitoring.

Track Extrapolation and Distribution for the CDF-II Trigger System

The CDF-II experiment is a multipurpose detector designed to study a wide range of processes observed in the high energy proton-antiproton collisions produced by the Fermilab Tevatron. With event rates greater than 1MHz, the CDF-II trigger system is crucial for selecting interesting events for subsequent analysis. This document provides an overview of the Track Extrapolation System (XTRP), a component of the CDF-II trigger system. The XTRP is a fully digital system that is utilized in the track-based selection of high momentum lepton and heavy flavor signatures. The design of the XTRP system includes five different custom boards utilizing discrete and FPGA technology residing in a single VME crate. We describe the design, construction, commissioning and operation of this system.
