Graded spherical skein 2+1-G-HQFT and modified Turaev-Viro invariants

For G a group, we present a G-graded version of chromatic maps and skein modules and use them to define a 2+1-G-HQFT out of a G-chromatic category. The construction applies to the representations of unrestricted quantum groups at root of unity and recovers the modified Turaev-Viro 3-dimensional invariants.

Density and unitarity of the Burau representation from a non-semisimple TQFT

We study the density of the Burau representation from the perspective of a non-semisimple TQFT at a fourth root of unity. This gives a TQFT construction of Squier's Hermitian form on the Burau representation with possibly mixed signature. We prove that the image of the braid group in the space of possibly indefinite unitary representations is dense. We also argue for the potential applications of non-semisimple TQFTs toward topological quantum computation.

B-twisted Gaiotto-Witten theory and topological quantum field theory

We develop representation theoretic techniques to construct three dimensional non-semisimple topological quantum field theories which model homologically truncated topological B-twists of abelian Gaiotto-Witten theory with linear matter. Our constructions are based on relative modular structures on the category of weight modules over an unrolled quantization of a Lie superalgebra. The Lie superalgebra, originally defined by Gaiotto and Witten, is associated to a complex symplectic representation of a metric abelian Lie algebra. The physical theories we model admit alternative realizations as Chern-Simons-Rozansky-Witten theories and supergroup Chern-Simons theories and include as particular examples global forms of $\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1)$-Chern-Simons theory and toral Chern-Simons theory. Fundamental to our approach is the systematic incorporation of non-genuine line operators which source flat connections for the topological flavour symmetry of the theory.

Skein (3+1)-TQFTs from Non-Semisimple Ribbon Categories

We define a (3+1)-TQFT associated with possibly non-semisimple finite unimodular ribbon tensor categories using skein theory. This gives an explicit realization of a TQFT predicted by the cobordism hypothesis, based on recent results on dualizability. State spaces are given by admissible skein modules, and we prescribe the TQFT on handle attachments. We give some explicit algebraic conditions on the input category to define this TQFT, namely to be ''chromatic non-degenerate''. As a by-product, we obtain an invariant of 4-manifolds equipped with a ribbon graph in their boundary, and in the ''twist non-degenerate'' case, an invariant of 3-manifolds. Our construction generalizes the Crane-Yetter-Kauffman TQFTs in the semi-simple case, and the Lyubashenko (hence also Hennings and WRT) invariants of 3-manifolds. The whole construction is very elementary, and we can easily characterize the invertibility of the TQFTs, study their behavior under connected sums and provide some examples.

Chromatic maps for finite tensor categories

Chromatic maps for spherical tensor categories are instrumental tools to construct (non semisimple) invariants of 3-manifolds and their extension to (non compact) (2+1)-TQFTs. In this paper, we introduce left and right chromatic maps for finite tensor categories and prove that such maps always exist. As a corollary, we obtain that any spherical finite tensor category has a chromatic map.

Renormalized Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants for the unrolled quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$

This paper is a self-contained introduction to the theory of renormalized Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants of links defined by Geer, Patureau-Mirand and Turaev. Whereas the standard Reshetikhin-Turaev theory of a $\mathbb{C}$-linear ribbon category assigns the trivial invariant to any link with a component colored by a simple object of vanishing quantum dimension, the renormalized theory does not. We give a streamlined development of the renormalized Reshetikhin-Turaev theory of links for the category of weight modules over the restricted unrolled quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$ at an even root of unity.

Admissible Skein Modules

In this paper we introduce the notion of admissible skein modules associated to an ideal in a pivotal category. We explain how these modules are generalizations of the Kauffman skein algebra and how they relate to renormalized quantum invariants coming from non-semisimple categories.

Non compact (2+1)-TQFTs from non-semisimple spherical categories

This paper contains three related groupings of results. First, we consider a new notion of an admissible skein module of a surface associated to an ideal in a (non-semisimple) pivotal category. Second, we introduce the notion of a chromatic category and associate to such a category a finite dimensional non-compact (2+1)-TQFT by assigning admissible skein modules to closed oriented surfaces and using Juh\'asz's presentation of cobordisms. The resulting TQFT extends to a genuine one if and only if the chromatic category is semisimple with nonzero dimension (recovering then the Turaev-Viro TQFT). The third grouping of results concerns sided chromatic maps in finite tensor categories. In particular, we prove that every spherical tensor category (in the sense of Etingof, Douglas et al.) is a chromatic category (and so can be used to define a non-compact (2+1)-TQFT).

Three dimensional topological quantum field theory from $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1))$ and $U(1 \vert 1)$ Chern--Simons theory

We introduce an unrolled quantization $U_q^E(\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1))$ of the complex Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1)$ and use its categories of weight modules to construct and study new three dimensional non-semisimple topological quantum field theories. These theories are defined on categories of cobordisms which are decorated by ribbon graphs and cohomology classes and take values in categories of graded super vector spaces. Computations in these theories are enabled by a detailed study of the representation theory of $U_q^E(\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1))$, both for generic and root of unity $q$. We argue that by restricting to subcategories of integral weight modules we obtain topological quantum field theories which are mathematical models of Chern--Simons theories with gauge supergroups $\mathfrak{psl}(1 \vert 1)$ and $\mathfrak{gl}(1 \vert 1)$ coupled to background flat $\mathbb{C}^{\times}$-connections, as studied in the physics literature by Rozansky--Saleur and Mikhaylov. In particular, we match Verlinde formulae and mapping class group actions on state spaces of non-generic tori with results in the physics literature. We also obtain explicit descriptions of state spaces of generic surfaces, including their graded dimensions, which go beyond results in the physics literature.

Non-semisimple Levin-Wen Models and Hermitian TQFTs from quantum (super)groups

We develop the categorical context for defining Hermitian non-semisimple TQFTs. We prove that relative Hermitian modular categories give rise to modified Hermitian WRT-TQFTs and provide numerous examples of these structures coming from the representation theory of quantum groups and quantum superalgebras. The Hermitian theory developed here for the modified Turaev-Viro TQFT is applied to define new pseudo-Hermitian topological phases that can be considered as non-semisimple analogs of Levin-Wen models.

A QFT for non-semisimple TQFT

We construct a family of 3d quantum field theories $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ that conjecturally provide a physical realization -- and derived generalization -- of non-semisimple mathematical TQFT's based on the modules for the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$ at an even root of unity $q=\text{exp}(i\pi/k)$. The theories $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ are defined as topological twists of certain 3d $\mathcal N=4$ Chern-Simons-matter theories, which also admit string/M-theory realizations. They may be thought of as $SU(n)_{k-n}$ Chern-Simons theories, coupled to a twisted $\mathcal N=4$ matter sector (the source of non-semisimplicity). We show that $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ admits holomorphic boundary conditions supporting two different logarithmic vertex operator algebras, one of which is an $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-type Feigin-Tipunin algebra; and we conjecture that these two vertex operator algebras are related by a novel logarithmic level-rank duality. (We perform detailed computations to support the conjecture.) We thus relate the category of line operators in $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ to the derived category of modules for a boundary Feigin-Tipunin algebra, and -- using a logarithmic Kazhdan-Lusztig-like correspondence that has been established for $n=2$ and expected for general $n$ -- to the derived category of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$ modules. We analyze many other key features of $\mathcal T_{n,k}^A$ and match them from quantum-group and VOA perspectives, including deformations by flat $PSL(n,\mathbb C)$ connections, one-form symmetries, and indices of (derived) genus-$g$ state spaces.

Some remarks on relative modular categories

We study properties of relative modular categories and derive sufficient conditions for their existence. In particular, we derive sufficient conditions for relative pre-modular categories to be non-degenerate and relative modular, and for the quotient of categories taking a particular form by their ideal of negligible modules to be generically semi-simple.

Pseudo-Hermitian Levin-Wen models from non-semisimple TQFTs

We construct large classes of exactly solvable pseudo-Hermitian 2D spin Hamiltonians. The ground states of these systems depend only on the spatial topology of the system. We identify the ground state system on a surface with the value assigned to the surface by a non-semisimple TQFT generalizing the Turaev-Viro model. A non-trivial example arises from a non-semisimple subcategory of representations of quantum sl(2) where the quantum parameter is specialized to a root of unity.

A Hermitian TQFT from a non-semisimple category of quantum sl(2)-modules

We endow a non-semisimple category of modules of unrolled quantum sl(2) with a Hermitian structure. We also prove that the TQFT constructed in arXiv:1202.3553 using this category is Hermitian. This gives rise to projective representations of the mapping class group in the group of indefinite unitary matrices.

Mapping Class Group Representations From Non-Semisimple TQFTs

In [arXiv:1912.02063], we constructed 3-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) using not necessarily semisimple modular categories. Here, we study projective representations of mapping class groups of surfaces defined by these TQFTs, and we express the action of a set of generators through the algebraic data of the underlying modular category $\mathcal{C}$. This allows us to prove that the projective representations induced from the non-semisimple TQFTs of [arXiv:1912.02063] are equivalent to those obtained by Lyubashenko via generators and relations in [arXiv:hep-th/9405167]. Finally, we show that, when $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of finite-dimensional representations of the small quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, the action of all Dehn twists for surfaces without marked points has infinite order.

Relative (pre)-modular categories from special linear Lie superalgebras

We examine two different m-traces in the category of representations over the quantum Lie superalgebra associated to $\mathfrak{sl}(m|n)$ at root of unity. The first m-trace is on the ideal of projective modules and leads to new Extended Topological Quantum Field Theories. The second m-trace is on the ideal of perturbative typical modules. We consider the quotient with respect to negligible morphisms coming from this m-trace and show that in the case of $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$ this quotient leads to 3-manifolds invariants. We conjecture that the quotient category of perturbatives over quantum $\mathfrak{sl}(m|n)$ leads to 3-manifold invariants and more generally ETQFTs.
