M-traces in (non-unimodular) pivotal categories

We generalize the notion of a modified trace (or m-trace) to the setting of non-unimodular categories. M-traces are known to play an important role in low-dimensional topology and representation theory, as well as in studying the category itself. Under mild conditions we give existence and uniqueness results for m-traces in pivotal categories.

Mapping Class Group Representations From Non-Semisimple TQFTs

In [arXiv:1912.02063], we constructed 3-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) using not necessarily semisimple modular categories. Here, we study projective representations of mapping class groups of surfaces defined by these TQFTs, and we express the action of a set of generators through the algebraic data of the underlying modular category $\mathcal{C}$. This allows us to prove that the projective representations induced from the non-semisimple TQFTs of [arXiv:1912.02063] are equivalent to those obtained by Lyubashenko via generators and relations in [arXiv:hep-th/9405167]. Finally, we show that, when $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of finite-dimensional representations of the small quantum group of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$, the action of all Dehn twists for surfaces without marked points has infinite order.

Modified graded Hennings invariants from unrolled quantum groups and modified integral

The second author constructed a topological ribbon Hopf algebra from the unrolled quantum group associated with the super Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$. We generalize this fact to the context of unrolled quantum groups and construct the associated topological ribbon Hopf algebras. Then we use such an algebra, the discrete Fourier transforms, a symmetrized graded integral and a modified trace to define a modified graded Hennings invariant. Finally, we use the notion of a modified integral to extend this invariant to empty manifolds and show that it recovers the CGP-invariant.

The ADO Invariants are a q-Holonomic Family

We investigate the $q$-holonomic properties of a class of link invariants based on quantum group representations with vanishing quantum dimensions, motivated by the search for the invariants' realization in physics. Some of the best known invariants of this type, constructed from `typical' representations of the unrolled quantum group $\mathcal U^H_{ζ_{2r}}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ at a $2r$-th root of unity, were introduced by Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki (ADO). We prove that the ADO invariants for $r\geq 2$ are a $q$-holonomic family, implying in particular that they satisfy recursion relations that are independent of $r$. In the case of a knot, we prove that the $q$-holonomic recursion ideal of the ADO invariants is contained in the recursion ideal of the colored Jones polynomials, the subject of the celebrated AJ Conjecture. (Combined with a recent result of S. Willetts, this establishes an isomorphism of the ADO and Jones recursion ideals. Our results also confirm a recent physically-motivated conjecture of Gukov-Hsin-Nakajima-Park-Pei-Sopenko.)

Non-Semisimple Quantum Invariants and TQFTs from Small and Unrolled Quantum Goups

We show that unrolled quantum groups at odd roots of unity give rise to relative modular categories. These are the main building blocks for the construction of 1+1+1-TQFTs extending CGP invariants, which are non-semisimple quantum invariants of closed 3-manifolds decorated with ribbon graphs and cohomology classes. When we consider the zero cohomology class, these quantum invariants are shown to coincide with the renormalized Hennings invariants coming from the corresponding small quantum groups.

Kuperberg and Turaev-Viro Invariants in Unimodular Categories

We give a categorical setting in which Penrose graphical calculus naturally extends to graphs drawn on the boundary of a handlebody. We use it to introduce invariants of 3-manifolds presented by Heegaard splittings. We recover Kuperberg invariants when the category comes from an involutory Hopf algebra and Turaev-Viro invariants when the category is semi-simple and spherical.

Holonomy braidings, biquandles and quantum invariants of links with $SL_2(\mathbb C)$ flat connections

R. Kashaev and N. Reshetikhin introduced the notion of holonomy braiding extending V. Turaev's homotopy braiding to describe the behavior of cyclic representations of the unrestricted quantum group $U_qsl_2$ at root of unity. In this paper, using quandles and biquandles we develop a general theory for Reshetikhin-Turaev ribbon type functor for tangles with quandle representations. This theory applies to the unrestricted quantum group $U_qsl_2$ and produces an invariant of links with a gauge class of quandle representations.

Renormalized Hennings Invariants and 2+1-TQFTs

We construct non-semisimple $2+1$-TQFTs yielding mapping class group representations in Lyubashenko's spaces. In order to do this, we first generalize Beliakova, Blanchet and Geer's logarithmic Hennings invariants based on quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ to the setting of finite-dimensional non-degenerate unimodular ribbon Hopf algebras. The tools used for this construction are a Hennings-augmented Reshetikhin-Turaev functor and modified traces. When the Hopf algebra is factorizable, we further show that the universal construction of Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum and Vogel produces a $2+1$-TQFT on a not completely rigid monoidal subcategory of cobordisms.

Full Dyon Excitation Spectrum in Generalized Levin-Wen Models

In Levin-Wen (LW) models, a wide class of exactly solvable discrete models, for two dimensional topological phases, it is relatively easy to describe only single fluxon excitations, but not the charge and dyonic as well as many-fluxon excitations. To incorporate charged and dyonic excitations in (doubled) topological phases, an extension of the LW models is proposed in this paper. We first enlarge the Hilbert space with adding a tail on one of the edges of each trivalent vertex, to describe the internal charge degrees of freedom at the vertex. Then we study the full dyon spectrum of the extended LW models, including both quantum numbers and wave functions for dyonic quasiparticle excitations. The local operators associated with the dyonic excitations are shown to form the so-called tube algebra, whose representations (modules) form the quantum double (categoric center) of the input data (unitary fusion category). In physically relevant cases, the input data is from a finite or quantum group (with braiding $R$-matrices), we find that the elementary excitations (or dyon species), as well as any localized/isolated excited states, are characterized by three quantum numbers: charge, fluxon type, and twist. They provide a "complete basis" for many-body states in the enlarged Hilbert space. Concrete examples are presented and the relevance of our results to the electric-magnetic duality existing in the models is addressed.

Logarithmic Hennings invariants for restricted quantum sl(2)

We construct a Hennings type logarithmic invariant for restricted quantum $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ at a $2\mathsf{p}$-th root of unity. This quantum group $U$ is not braided, but factorizable. The invariant is defined for a pair: a 3-manifold $M$ and a colored link $L$ inside $M$. The link $L$ is split into two parts colored by central elements and by trace classes, or elements in the $0^{\text{th}}$ Hochschild homology of $U$, respectively. The two main ingredients of our construction are the universal invariant of a string link with values in tensor powers of $U$, and the modified trace introduced by the third author with his collaborators and computed on tensor powers of the regular representation. Our invariant is a colored extension of the logarithmic invariant constructed by Jun Murakami.

Modified Turaev-Viro Invariants from quantum sl(2|1)

The category of finite dimensional module over the quantum superalgebra U_q(sl(2|1)) is not semi-simple and the quantum dimension of a generic U_q(sl(2|1))-module vanishes. This vanishing happens for any value of q (even when q is not a root of unity). These properties make it difficult to create a fusion or modular category. Loosely speaking, the standard way to obtain such a category from a quantum group is: 1) specialize q to a root of unity; this forces some modules to have zero quantum dimension, 2) quotient by morphisms of modules with zero quantum dimension, 3) show the resulting category is finite and semi-simple. In this paper we show an analogous construction works in the context of U_q(sl(2|1)) by replacing the vanishing quantum dimension with a modified quantum dimension. In particular, we specialize q to a root of unity, quotient by morphisms of modules with zero modified quantum dimension and show the resulting category is generically finite semi-simple. Moreover, we show the categories of this paper are relative G-spherical categories. As a consequence we obtain invariants of 3-manifold with additional structures.

The trace on projective representations of quantum groups

For certain roots of unity, we consider the categories of weight modules over three quantum groups: small, un-restricted and unrolled. The first main theorem of this paper is to show that there is a modified trace on the projective modules of the first two categories. The second main theorem is to show that category over the unrolled quantum group is ribbon. Partial results related to these theorems were known previously.

Some remarks on the unrolled quantum group of sl(2)

In this paper we consider the representation theory of a non-standard quantization of sl(2). This paper contains several results which have applications in quantum topology, including the classification of projective indecomposable modules and a description of morphisms between them. In the process of proving these results the paper acts as a survey of the known representation theory associated to this non-standard quantization of sl(2). The results of this paper are used extensively in [arXiv:1404.7289] to study Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) and have connections with Conformal Field Theory (CFT).

Non semi-simple TQFTs from unrolled quantum $sl(2)$

Invariants of 3-manifolds from a non semi-simple category of modules over a version of quantum $sl(2)$ were obtained by the last three authors in arXiv:1202.3553 . They are invariants of $3$-manifolds together with a cohomology class which can be interpreted as a line bundle with flat connection. In arXiv:1404.7289 we have extended those invariants to graded TQFTs on suitable cobordism categories. Here we give an overview of constructions and results, and describe the TQFT vector spaces. Then we provide a new, algebraic, approach to the computation of these vector spaces.

Quantum invariants of 3-manifolds via link surgery presentations and non-semi-simple categories

In this paper we construct invariants of 3-manifolds "à la Reshetikhin-Turaev" in the setting of non-semi-simple ribbon tensor categories. We give concrete examples of such categories which lead to a family of 3-manifold invariants indexed by the integers. We prove this family of invariants has several notable features, including: they can be computed via a set of axioms, they distinguish homotopically equivalent manifolds that the standard Reshetikhin-Turaev-Witten invariants do not, and they allow the statement of a version of the Volume Conjecture and a proof of this conjecture for an infinite class of links.

Non semi-simple sl(2) quantum invariants, spin case

Invariants of 3-manifolds from a non semi-simple category of modules over a version of quantum sl(2) were obtained by the last three authors in [arXiv:1404.7289]. In their construction the quantum parameter $q$ is a root of unity of order $2r$ where $r>1$ is odd or congruent to $2$ modulo $4$. In this paper we consider the remaining cases where $r$ is congruent to zero modulo $4$ and produce invariants of $3$-manifolds with colored links, equipped with generalized spin structure. For a given $3$-manifold $M$, the relevant generalized spin structures are (non canonically) parametrized by $H^1(M;\mathbb C/2\mathbb Z)$.

Non semi-simple TQFTs, Reidemeister torsion and Kashaev's invariants

We construct and study a new family of TQFTs based on nilpotent highest weight representations of quantum sl(2) at a root of unity indexed by generic complex numbers. This extends to cobordisms the non-semi-simple invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553) including the Kashaev invariant of links. Here the modular category framework does not apply and we use the ``universal construction''. Our TQFT provides a monoidal functor from a category of surfaces and their cobordisms into the category of graded finite dimensional vector spaces and their degree 0-morphisms and depends on the choice of a root of unity of order 2r. The functor is always symmetric monoidal but for even values of r the braiding on GrVect has to be the super-symmetric one, thus our TQFT may be considered as a super-TQFT. In the special case r=2 our construction yields a TQFT for a canonical normalization of Reidemeister torsion and we re-prove the classification of Lens spaces via the non-semi-simple quantum invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553). We prove that the representations of mapping class groups and Torelli groups resulting from our constructions are potentially more sensitive than those obtained from the standard Reshetikhin-Turaev functors; in particular we prove that the action of the bounding pairs generators of the Torelli group has always infinite order.

Relations between Witten-reshetikhin-turaev and non semi-simple sl(2) 3-manifold invariants

The Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants extend the Jones polynomials of links in S^3 to invariants of links in 3-manifolds. Similarly, in a preceding paper, the authors constructed two 3-manifold invariants N_r and N^0_r which extend the Akutsu-Deguchi-Ohtsuki invariant of links in S^3 colored by complex numbers to links in arbitrary manifolds. All these invariants are based on representation theory of the quantum group Uqsl2, where the definition of the invariants N_r and N^0_r uses a non-standard category of Uqsl2-modules which is not semi-simple. In this paper we study the second invariant N^0_r and consider its relationship with the WRT invariants. In particular, we show that the ADO invariant of a knot in S^3 is a meromorphic function of its color and we provide a strong relation between its residues and the colored Jones polynomials of the knot. Then we conjecture a similar relation between N^0_r and a WRT invariant. We prove this conjecture when the 3-manifold M is not a rational homology sphere and when M is a rational homology sphere obtained by surgery on a knot in S^3 or when M is a connected sum of such manifolds.
