Direct evidence of magnetic correlations deep inside the superconducting state of CaFe1.94Co0.06As2

Imaging local magnetic field distribution in a single crystal of superconductor CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 shows the presence of anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the sample. Close to the superconducting transition temperature we find a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic correlations. While the magnetic correlations are enhanced with the lowering of temperature, interestingly the area over which the magnetic phase exists shrinks at the expense of a growing superconducting phase in the sample. The coexistence of two phases deep inside the superconducting phase in this compound is maintained within the temperature range that we have explored in our experiment.

Anomalous local magnetic field distribution and strong pinning in CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 single crystals

Magneto-optical imaging of a single crystal of CaFe1.94Co0.06As2, shows anomalous remnant magnetization within Meissner like regions of the superconductor. The unconventional shape of the local magnetization hysteresis loop suggests admixture of superconducting and magnetic fractions governing the response. Near the superconducting transition temperature, local magnetic field exceeds the applied field resulting in a diamagnetic to positive magnetization transformation. The observed anomalies in the local magnetic field distribution are accompanied with enhanced bulk pinning in the CaFe1.94Co0.06As2 single crystals. We propose our results suggest a coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic correlations.

Anisotropic magnetic properties and superzone gap formation in CeGe single crystal

Single crystals of CeGe and its non-magnetic analogue LaGe have been grown by Czochralski method. CeGe compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic FeB-type crystal structure with the space group \textit{Pnma} (#62). The anisotropic magnetic properties have been investigated on well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity and heat capacity. It has been found that CeGe orders antiferromagnetically at 10.5 K. Both transport and magnetic studies have revealed large anisotropy reflecting the orthorhombic crystal structure. The magnetization measurement measured at 2 K revealed metamagnetic transitions along the [010] direction at 4.8 and 6.4 T and along [100] direction at a critical field of 10.7 T, while the magnetiztaion along [001] direction was increasing linearly without any anomaly up to a field of 16 T. From the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization measurements it has been found that [010] direction is the easy axis of magnetization. The electrical resistivity along the three crystallographic directions exhibited an upturn at $T_{\rm N}$ indicating the superzone gap formation below $T_{\rm N}$ in this compound. We have performed the crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is doublet and the splitting energies from the ground state to the first and second excited doublet states were estimated to be 39 and 111 K, respectively.

Evidence of the influence of magnetism on pseudogap states in the high resolution spectra of EuFe$_2$As$_2$

Employing {\it state of the art} high resolution photoemission spectroscopy, we studied the temperature evolution of the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, an unique pnictide, where antiferromagnetism of Eu layer survives within the superconducting phase due to `FeAs' layers achieved via substitution and/or pressure. High energy and angle resolution helped to reveal pseudogap-quasiparticle features having primarily As 4$p$ character and spin density wave transition induced band folding in the electronic structure. A weakly dispersing feature of dominant As 4$p$ character is discovered around 80 meV that becomes weaker in intensity below 20 K manifesting influence of antiferromagnetic order on conduction electrons. These results provide an evidence of a link between the pseudogap states and magnetism that could be revealed employing high resolutions.

Fe ion doping effect on electrical and magnetic properties of La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xFexO3 x = 0.0 to 1.0

Here we report the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Fe doped La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xFexO3 with x = 0.0 to 1.0 prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. Simulated data on XRD shows an increase in volume with an increase in Fe ion concentration. XPS supports that Fe3+ ions directly substitute Mn3+ ions. Shifting towards lower wave-number and symmetric IR band structure confirms increase in volume and homogeneous distribution of Fe ions. Fe ion doesn't contribute in double-exchange (DE) conduction mechanism due to its stable half filled 3d orbital. The presence of Fe3+ ions encourages anti-ferromagnetism (AFM) generated by super-exchange interaction and suppress insulator-metal transition temperature (TIM). Magnetic measurements show the existence of magnetic polarons supported by increase in volume of unit cell and deviation from Curie-Weiss law.

Structural, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of Cr-doped La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 for x = 0.0 to 1.0 manganites

We report detailed structural, electrical, magnetic and specific heat studies on La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites. Rietveld analysis of fitted and observed XRD patterns exhibited the single-phase nature of all the studied materials, which crystallize in Pbnm space group. Successive substitution of Cr at Mn site in La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites increases the electrical resistivity and decrease the characteristic insulator-metal transition temperature (TIM) of the parent compound along with a hump like feature for higher Cr-content samples. The hump structure basically signifies the onset of anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) interactions as inferred by both the magnetic and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy studies. The systematic suppression of FM state results in a spin glass (SG) like behavior. IR studies revealed that the vibration mode at 413 cm-1 being associated with internal bending of MnO6 octehedra, becomes softer, indicating an increase in distortion and hence the possible spin glass behavior. The critical exponents alpha, beta and gama are calculated from the heat capacity (CP) data near the TIM/TFM. The same exhibited variations of their values with doping. In particular the value of beta increases from 0.37 to 0.43, clearly indicating the coexistence of both long and short range magnetic orders i.e. tendency towards SG state for Cr doped samples. On the basis of present results, it is suggested that Cr dilutes double-exchange (DE) based FM and rather promotes the AFM based super exchange interactions (SE) via Cr3+/Mn4+ ions. Substitution of Cr systematically destroys both the metallic state and long range ferromagnetic (FM) order.

Magnetotransport of La0.70ca0.3-xsrxmno3 (Ag): A Potential Room Temperature Bolometer and Magnetic Sensor

Here we report the optimized magneto-transport properties of polycrystalline La0.70Ca0.3-xSrxMnO3 and their composites with Ag. The optimization was carried out by varying the Sr and Ag contents simultaneously to achieve large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) as well as low field magneto-resistance (MR) at room temperature. Sharpest paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) and insulator-metal (IM) transition is observed in the vicinity of the room temperature (TC=300 K=TIM) for the composition La0.70Ca0.20Sr00.10MnO3:Ag0.20. Partial substitution of larger Sr2+ ions at the Ca2+ ions sites controls the magnitude of the FM and IM transition temperatures, while the Ag induces the desired sharpness in these transitions. For the optimized composition, maximum TCR and MR are tuned to room temperature (300 K) with the former being as high as 9% and the later being 20 and 30 percent at 5 and 10 kOe magnetic fields respectively. Such sharp single peak (TCR= 9 percent) at room temperature can be used for the bolometric and infrared detector applications. The achievement of large TCR and low field MR at T~300K in polycrystalline samples is encouraging and we believe that further improvements can be achieved in thin films, which, by virtue of their low conduction noise, are more suitable for device applications.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in EuPtGe$_3$ single crystal

The magnetic properties of single crystalline EuPtGe$_3$, crystallizing in the non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been studied by means of magnetisation, electrical resistivity, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy. The susceptibility and heat capacity data indicate a magnetic transition at $T_{\rm N}$ = 11\,K. The Mössbauer data confirm this conclusion, but evidence a slight first order character of the transition. Analysing the magnetisation data using a mean field model with two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices allows to explain some aspects of the magnetic behaviour, and to derive the first and second neighbour exchange integrals in EuPtGe$_3$.

Magnetic properties of the heavy fermion antiferromagnet CeMg$_3$

We have grown the single crystals of CeMg$_3$ and its non-magnetic analogue LaMg$_3$, which crystallize in the cubic crystal structure with the space group \textit{Fm\rm{\={3}}m}, and studied their magnetic properties on well oriented single crystals by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and heat capacity. CeMg$_3$ orders antiferromagnetically with a Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ of 2.6 K. The specific heat capacity at low temperature exhibits an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient of 370 mJ/K$^2$$...$ mol indicating the heavy fermion nature of CeMg$_3$. An estimation of Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}$ was made and found that it is of similar magnitude as that of $T_{\rm N}$. The reduced value of the magnetization below the ordering temperature, together with the reduced entropy at the magnetic ordering temperature and the enhanced low temperature heat capacity indicates that Kondo effect plays a significant role in this compound. We have performed the crystalline electric field (CEF) analysis on the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity data and found that the ground state is a $Γ_7$ doublet with an overall splitting of 191 K.

Electronically Excited States of Vitamin B12: Benchmark Calculations Including Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory and Correlated Ab Initio Methods

Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and correlated ab initio methods have been applied to the electronically excited states of vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin or CNCbl). Different experimental techniques have been used to probe the excited states of CNCbl, revealing many issues that remain poorly understood from an electronic structure point of view. Due to its efficient scaling with size, TD-DFT emerges as one of the most practical tools that can be used to predict the electronic properties of these fairly complex molecules. However, the description of excited states is strongly dependent on the type of functional used in the calculations. In the present contribution, the choice of a proper functional for vitamin B12 was evaluated in terms of its agreement with both experimental results and correlated ab initio calculations. Three different functionals, i.e. B3LYP, BP86, and LC-BLYP, were tested. In addition, the effect of relative contributions of DFT and HF to the exchange-correlation functional was investigated as a function of the range-separation parameter, μ. The issues related to the underestimation of charge transfer (CT) excitation energies by TD-DFT was validated by Tozer's L diagnostic, which measures the spatial overlap between occupied and virtual orbitals involved in the particular excitation. The nature of low-lying excited states was also analyzed based on a comparison of TD-DFT and ab initio results. Based on an extensive comparision against experimental results and ab initio benchmark calculations, the BP86 functional was found to be the most appropriate in describing the electronic properties of CNCbl. Finally, an analysis of electronic transitions and a new re-assignment of some excitations are discussed.

Coverage and Connectivity Aware Neural Network Based Energy Efficient Routing in Wireless Sensor Networks

There are many challenges when designing and deploying wireless sensor networks (WSNs). One of the key challenges is how to make full use of the limited energy to prolong the lifetime of the network, because energy is a valuable resource in WSNs. The status of energy consumption should be continuously monitored after network deployment. In this paper, we propose coverage and connectivity aware neural network based energy efficient routing in WSN with the objective of maximizing the network lifetime. In the proposed scheme, the problem is formulated as linear programming (LP) with coverage and connectivity aware constraints. Cluster head selection is proposed using adaptive learning in neural networks followed by coverage and connectivity aware routing with data transmission. The proposed scheme is compared with existing schemes with respect to the parameters such as number of alive nodes, packet delivery fraction, and node residual energy. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can be used in wide area of applications in WSNs.

Magnetic properties of EuPtSi$_3$ single crystals

Single crystals of EuPtSi$_3$, which crystallize in the BaNiSn$_3$-type crystal structure, have been grown by high temperature solution growth method using molten Sn as the solvent. EuPtSi$_3$ which lacks the inversion symmetry and has only one Eu site in the unit cell is found to be an antiferromagnet with two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ = 17 K and $T_{\rm N2}$ = 16 K, as inferred from magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and $^{151}$Eu Mössbauer measurements. The isothermal magnetization data for $H \parallel$ [001] reveal a metamagnetic transition at a critical field $H_{\rm c}$ = 1 T. The magnetization saturates to a moment value of 6.43 $μ_{\rm B}$/Eu above 5.9 T (9.2 T) for $H \parallel $ [001] ([100]), indicating that these fields are spin-flip fields for the divalent Eu moments along the two axes. The origin of this anisotropic behaviour is discussed. A magnetic (H, T) phase diagram has been constructed from the temperature dependence of isothermal magnetization data. The reduced jump in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm N1}$ indicates a transition to an incommensurate, amplitude modulated antiferromagnetic structure. The shape of the hyperfine field split Mössbauer spectrum at $T_{\rm N1}$ provides additional support for the proposed nature of this magnetic transition.

Magnetic Behavior in RRhX (R = rare earths; X=B, C) Compounds

We report on the magnetic behavior of RRhB (R = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb and Tm) and RRhC (R = La, Ce, Pr and Gd) compounds crystallizing in the cubic perovskite type structure with space group Pm3m. The heat capacity data on Pauli-paramagnetic LaRhB and LaRhC indicate a high frequency vibrating motion of boron and carbon atoms in the unit cell. Ce is in -like nonmagnetic state in both the compounds. Pr compounds show a dominant crystal field effect with a nonmagnetic singlet ground state in PrRhB and a nonmagnetic quadrupolar doublet in PrRhC. Compounds with other rare earths order ferromagnetically at low temperatures except TmRhB in which the zero field evolution of magnetic interactions is relatively more complicated. The electrical resistivity of GdRhB decreases with increasing temperature in the paramagnetic state in the vicinity of T, which is rarely seen in ferromagnets. The behavior is discussed to be arising due to the short range spin fluctuation and a possible contribution from Fermi surface geometry.

Evolution of the bulk properties, structure, magnetic order, and superconductivity with Ni doping in CaFe2-xNixAs2

Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping while the area of the a-b plane quickly decreases and then saturates. Warming and cooling data in the resistivity and neutron diffraction indicate hysteresis of ~2 K. At larger doping the transition is more rounded, and decreases to zero for x=0.06. The susceptibility is anisotropic for all values of x. Electrical resistivity for x = 0.053 and 0.06 shows a superconducting transition with an onset of nearly 15 K which is further corroborated by substantial diamagnetic susceptibility. For the fully superconducting sample there is no long range magnetic order and the structure remains tetragonal at all temperature, but there is an anomalous increase in the area of the a-b plane in going to low T. Heat capacity data show that the density of states at the Fermi level increases for x > 0.053 as inferred from the value of Sommerfeld coefficient. The regime of superconductivity is quite restrictive, with a maximum TC of 15 K and an upper critical field Hc2=14 T. Superconductivity disappears in the overdoped region.

EuFe_2As_2 magnetic structure determination

Magnetic resonant X ray scattering experiments have been performed on a single crystal of EuFe_2As_2 at the Eu L_3 absorption edge. This has permitted us to determine for the first time the orientation of Eu magnetic moments in the antiferromagnetic ordered phase below T_N=19 K as parallel to the a-axis. In addition, non-resonant magnetic X ray measurements indicate that Fe magnetic moments align along the same direction in the spin density wave phase (T<T_S~190 K). Temperature dependences indicate that the onset of the Eu AFM phase barely affects the Fe magnetic sublattice.

Anisotropic magnetic and superconducting properties of pure and Co-doped CaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

We report anisotropic dc magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, and heat capacity $C(T)$ measurements on the single crystals of CaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ for $x$ = 0 and 0.06. Large sized single crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method with Sn as the solvent. For the pure compound with $x$ = 0, a high temperature transition at 170 K is observed which is attributed to a combined spin density wave (SDW) ordering and a structural phase transition. On the other hand, for the Co-doped samples for $x$ = 0.06, the SDW transition is suppressed while superconductivity is observed at $\simeq$17 K. The superconducting transition has been confirmed from the magnetization and electrical resistivity studies. The $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectrum in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ indicates that the SDW ordering is incommensurate. In the Co-doped sample, a prominent paramagnetic line at 4.2 K is observed indicating a weakening of the SDW state.
