Spin and Chirality Effects in Antler-Topology Processes at High Energy $e^+e^-$ Colliders

We perform a model-independent investigation of spin and chirality correlation effects in the antler-topology processes $e^+e^-\to\mathcal{P}^+\mathcal{P}^-\to (\ell^+ \mathcal{D}^0) (\ell^-\mathcal{\bar{D}}^0)$ at high energy $e^+e^-$ colliders with polarized beams. Generally the production process $e^+e^-\to\mathcal{P}^+\mathcal{P}^-$ can occur not only through the $s$-channel exchange of vector bosons, $\mathcal{V}^0$, including the neutral Standard Model (SM) gauge bosons, $γ$ and $Z$, but also through the $s$- and $t$-channel exchanges of new neutral states, $\mathcal{S}^0$ and $\mathcal{T}^0$, and the $u$-channel exchange of new doubly-charged states, $\mathcal{U}^{--}$. The general set of (non-chiral) three-point couplings of the new particles and leptons allowed in a renormalizable quantum field theory is considered. The general spin and chirality analysis is based on the threshold behavior of the excitation curves for $\mathcal{P}^+\mathcal{P}^-$ pair production in $e^+e^-$ collisions with longitudinal and transverse polarized beams, the angular distributions in the production process and also the production-decay angular correlations. In the first step, we present the observables in the helicity formalism. Subsequently, we show how a set of observables can be designed for determining the spins and chiral structures of the new particles without any model assumptions. Finally, taking into account a typical set of approximately chiral invariant scenarios, we demonstrate how the spin and chirality effects can be probed experimentally at a high energy $e^+e^-$ collider.

Determining the Dark Matter Particle Mass through Antler Topology Processes at Lepton Colliders

We study the kinematic cusps and endpoints of processes with the "antler topology" as a way to measure the masses of the parity-odd missing particle and the intermediate parent at a high energy lepton collider. The fixed center of mass energy at a lepton collider makes many new physics processes suitable for the study of the antler decay topology. It also provides new kinematic observables with cusp structures, optimal for the missing mass determination. We also study realistic effects on these observables, including initial state radiation, beamstrahlung, acceptance cuts, and detector resolution. We find that the new observables, such as the reconstructed invariant mass of invisible particles and the summed energy of the observable final state particles, appear to be more stable than the commonly considered energy endpoints against realistic factors and are very efficient at measuring the missing particle mass. For the sake of illustration, we study smuon pair production and chargino pair production within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We adopt the log-likelihood method to optimize the analysis. We find that at the 500 GeV ILC, a precision of approximately 0.5 GeV can be achieved in the case of smuon production with a leptonic final state, and approximately 2 GeV in the case of chargino production with a hadronic final state.

A New Method for the Spin Determination of Dark Matter

We construct a new kinematical variable that is able to fully reconstruct the absolute value, and partially reconstruct the sign, of the angular distribution in the center of momentum system of a decaying particle in certain cases where the center of momentum system is only known up to a two-fold ambiguity. After making contact with Drell-Yan production at the Large Hadron Collider, we apply this method to the pair-production of dark matter in association with two charged leptons at the International Linear Collider and show that for a small intermediate width, perfect agreement is found with the true angular distribution in the absence of initial state radiation. In the presence of initial state radiation, we find that the modification to the angular distributions is small for most angles and that the different spin combinations should still be distinguishable. This enables us to determine the spin of the mother particle and the dark matter particle in certain cases.

On Tree-Level Unitarity in Theories of Massive Spin-2 Bosons

We analyze the tree-level 2->2 scattering of massive spin-2 bosons in a theory with only relevant and marginal operators and extract the sum rules on the coupling constants and masses required to achieve tree-level unitarity to very high energy. We do this for four illustrative cases. In the first, we include massive spin-1 and spin-0 bosons in our theory, but do not require gauge invariance. For this case, we find that it is, in fact, possible to construct a theory where all 2->2 scattering processes are tree-level unitary to very high energy. In the second case, we consider a theory that only includes massive spin-2 and spin-0 bosons. In the absence of spin-1 bosons, we find that it is impossible to unitarize the spin-2 scattering. In the third and fourth cases, we reintroduce the spin-1 bosons as gauge bosons and demand that all interactions are gauge invariant. We take the spin-2 bosons to transform under the adjoint representation of one or two gauge groups. For both of these cases, we find that unitarization is unachievable.

FeynRules 2.0 - A complete toolbox for tree-level phenomenology

FeynRules is a Mathematica-based package which addresses the implementation of particle physics models, which are given in the form of a list of fields, parameters and a Lagrangian, into high-energy physics tools. It calculates the underlying Feynman rules and outputs them to a form appropriate for various programs such as CalcHEP, FeynArts, MadGraph, Sherpa and Whizard. Since the original version, many new features have been added: support for two-component fermions, spin-3/2 and spin-2 fields, superspace notation and calculations, automatic mass diagonalization, completely general FeynArts output, a new universal FeynRules output interface, a new Whizard interface, automatic 1 to 2 decay width calculation, improved speed and efficiency, new guidelines for validation and a new web-based validation package. With this feature set, FeynRules enables models to go from theory to simulation and comparison with experiment quickly, efficiently and accurately.

New developments in FeynRules

The program FeynRules is a Mathematica package developed to facilitate the implementation of new physics theories into high-energy physics tools. Starting from a minimal set of information such as the model gauge symmetries, its particle content, parameters and Lagrangian, FeynRules provides all necessary routines to extract automatically from the Lagrangian (that can also be computed semi-automatically for supersymmetric theories) the associated Feynman rules. These can be further exported to several Monte Carlo event generators through dedicated interfaces, as well as translated into a Python library, under the so-called UFO model format, agnostic of the model complexity, especially in terms of Lorentz and/or color structures appearing in the vertices or of number of external legs. In this work, we briefly report on the most recent new features that have been added to FeynRules, including full support for spin-3/2 fermions, a new module allowing for the automated diagonalization of the particle spectrum and a new set of routines dedicated to decay width calculations.

Simulating spin-3/2 particles at colliders

Support for interactions of spin-3/2 particles is implemented in the FeynRules and ALOHA packages and tested with the MadGraph 5 and CalcHEP event generators in the context of three phenomenological applications. In the first, we implement a spin-3/2 Majorana gravitino field, as in local supersymmetric models, and study gravitino and gluino pair-production. In the second, a spin-3/2 Dirac top-quark excitation, inspired from compositness models, is implemented. We then investigate both top-quark excitation and top-quark pair-production. In the third, a general effective operator for a spin-3/2 Dirac quark excitation is implemented, followed by a calculation of the angular distribution of the s-channel production mechanism.

Vector Bosons Signals of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We study the physics potential of the 8 TeV LHC to discover signals of extended gauge models or extra dimensional models whose low energy behavior is well represented by an SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) electroweak gauge structure. We find that with a combined integrated luminosity of 40 fb^(-1), the first new Kaluza-Klein mode of the W gauge boson can be discovered up to a mass of about 400 GeV, when produced in association with a Z boson.

Low-Mass Higgs Bosons in the NMSSM and Their LHC Implications

We study the Higgs sector of the Next to Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) in light of the discovery of the SM-like Higgs boson at the LHC. We perform a broad scan over the NMSSM parameter space and identify the regions that are consistent with current Higgs search results at colliders. In contrast to the commonly studied "decoupling" scenario in the literature where the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model CP-odd Higgs boson mass is large mA >> mZ, we pay particular attention to the light Higgs states in the case when mA <~ 2mZ . The Higgs bosons in the NMSSM, namely three CP-even states, two CP-odd states, and two charged Higgs states, could all be rather light, near or below the electroweak scale, although the singlet-like states can be heavier. The SM-like Higgs boson could be either the lightest CP-even scalar or the second lightest CP-even scalar, but is unlikely to be the heaviest scalar. These NMSSM parameter regions have unique properties and offer rich phenomenology. The decay branching fractions for the SM-like Higgs boson may be modified appreciably. The correlations of gamma gamma/V V and V V/b b can be substantially altered. The new Higgs bosons may be readily produced at the LHC and may decay to non-standard distinctive final states, most notably a pair of Higgs bosons when kinematically accessible. We evaluate the production and decay of the Higgs bosons and comment on further searches at the LHC to probe the Higgs sector of the NMSSM.

CalcHEP 3.4 for collider physics within and beyond the Standard Model

We present version 3.4 of the CalcHEP software package which is designed for effective evaluation and simulation of high energy physics collider processes at parton level. The main features of CalcHEP are the computation of Feynman diagrams, integration over multi-particle phase space and event simulation at parton level. The principle attractive key-points along these lines are that it has: a) an easy startup even for those who are not familiar with CalcHEP; b) a friendly and convenient graphical user interface; c) the option for a user to easily modify a model or introduce a new model by either using the graphical interface or by using an external package with the possibility of cross checking the results in different gauges; d) a batch interface which allows to perform very complicated and tedious calculations connecting production and decay modes for processes with many particles in the final state. With this features set, CalcHEP can efficiently perform calculations with a high level of automation from a theory in the form of a Lagrangian down to phenomenology in the form of cross sections, parton level event simulation and various kinematical distributions. In this paper we report on the new features of CalcHEP 3.4 which improves the power of our package to be an effective tool for the study of modern collider phenomenology.

Discovering New Gauge Bosons of Electroweak Symmetry Breaking at LHC-8

We study the physics potential of the 8TeV LHC (LHC-8) to discover, during its 2012 run, a large class of extended gauge models or extra dimensional models whose low energy behavior is well represented by an SU(2)^2 x U(1) gauge structure. We analyze this class of models and find that with a combined integrated luminosity of 40-60/fb at the LHC-8, the first new Kaluza-Klein mode of the W gauge boson can be discovered up to a mass of about 370-400 GeV, when produced in association with a Z boson.

Pair Production of MSSM Higgs Bosons in the Non-decoupling Region at the LHC

We consider the Higgs boson signals from pair production at the LHC within the framework of the MSSM in the non-decoupling (low-m_A) region. In light of the recent observation of a SM-like Higgs boson, we argue that the exploration for Higgs pair production at the LHC is a crucial next step to probe the MSSM Higgs sector. We emphasize that the production of H^\pm A^0 and H^{+}H^{-} depends only on the electroweak gauge couplings while all the leading Higgs production channels via gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, and Higgsstrahlung depend on additional free Higgs sector parameters. In the non-decoupling region, the five MSSM Higgs bosons are all relatively light and pair production signals may be accessible. We find that at the 8 TeV LHC, a 5σsignal for H^\pm A^0, H^\pm h^0 -> τ^{\pm}νb\bar b and H^{+}H^{-} -> τ^{+}ντ^{-}νare achievable with an integrated luminosity of 7 (11) fb^{-1} and 24 (48) fb^{-1}, respectively for m_A=95 (130) GeV. At the 14 TeV LHC, a 5σsignal for these two channels would require as little as 4 (7) fb^{-1} and 10 (19) fb^{-1}, respectively.

From Lagrangians to Events: Computer Tutorial at the MC4BSM-2012 Workshop

This is a written account of the computer tutorial offered at the Sixth MC4BSM workshop at Cornell University, March 22-24, 2012. The tools covered during the tutorial include: FeynRules, LanHEP, MadGraph, CalcHEP, Pythia 8, Herwig++, and Sherpa. In the tutorial, we specify a simple extension of the Standard Model, at the level of a Lagrangian. The software tools are then used to automatically generate a set of Feynman rules, compute the invariant matrix element for a sample process, and generate both parton-level and fully hadronized/showered Monte Carlo event samples. The tutorial is designed to be self-paced, and detailed instructions for all steps are included in this write-up. Installation instructions for each tool on a variety of popular platforms are also provided.

Introducing an interface between WHIZARD and FeynRules

While Monte Carlo event generators like WHIZARD have become indispensable tools in studying the impact of new physics on collider observables over the last decades, the implementation of new models in such packages has remained a rather awkward and error-prone process. Recently, the FeynRules package was introduced which greatly simplifies this process by providing a single unified model format from which model implementations for many different Monte Carlo codes can be derived automatically. In this note, we present an interface which extends FeynRules to provide this functionality also for the WHIZARD package, thus making WHIZARD's strengths and performance easily available to model builders.

Discovery in Drell-Yan Processes at the LHC

We study the Drell-Yan process mediated by a new bosonic resonance at the LHC. The bosons of spin-0, 1, and 2 with the most general leading-order couplings to Standard Model fermions and gluons are considered, which provide a model-independent formulation for future exploration of the resonance properties, such as its spin, mass and couplings. In the case of neutral resonances, we demonstrate how the shapes of the kinematical distributions change as one varies the chiral couplings of the quarks and leptons, and show how to analyze the couplings by making use of the forward-backward asymmetry. In the case of charged resonances, we propose a novel technique to effectively reconstruct the angular distribution in the center-of-mass frame, to a large extent avoiding the two-fold ambiguity due to the missing neutrino. Similar to the case of a neutral resonance, the spin information of the resonance can be extracted unambiguously, and chiral couplings and the asymmetries can be explored in a statistical manner. With the current LHC data, we present bounds on the mass and cross section times branching fraction of the new resonance and estimate the future reach.

SLHAplus: a library for implementing extensions of the standard model

We provide a library to facilitate the implementation of new models in codes such as matrix element and event generators or codes for computing dark matter observables. The library contains a SLHA reader routine as well as diagonalisation routines. This library is available in CalcHEP and micrOMEGAs. The implementation of models based on this library is supported by LanHEP and FeynRules.

Deconstructed Higgsless Models at LHC: The Top Triangle Moose

We describe a deconstructed Higgsless model in which electroweak symmetry breaking results largely from a Higgsless mechanism while the top quark mass is generated by a topcolor mechanism. The top quark mass arises from a Yukawa coupling to an effective top-Higgs which develops a small vacuum expectation value. Both the heavy partners of the electoweak gauge bosons and those for the SM fermions can be light enough to be visible at LHC.

Testing CP Violation in ZZH Interactions at the LHC

We study genuine CP-odd observables at the LHC to test the CP property of the ZZH interaction for a Higgs boson with mass below the threshold to a pair of gauge bosons via the process p,p -> Z,H -> l+,l-,b,bbar. We illustrate the analysis by including a CP-odd ZZH coupling, and show how to extract the CP asymmetries in the signal events. After selective kinematical cuts to suppress the SM backgrounds plus an optimal Log-likelihood analysis, we find that, with a CP violating coupling btilde = 0.25, a CP asymmetry may be established at a 3 sigma (5 sigma) level with an integrated luminosity of about 30 (50) fb^-1 at the LHC.
