Identifying Better Effective Higgsless Theories via W_L W_L Scattering

The three site Higgsless model has been offered as a benchmark for studying the collider phenomenology of Higgsless models. In this talk, we present how well the three site Higgsless model performs as a general representative of Higgsless models in describing W_L W_L scattering, and which modifications can make it more representative. We employ general sum rules relating the masses and couplings of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gauge fields in continuum and deconstructed Higgsless models as a way to compare the different theories. After comparing the three site Higgsless model to flat and warped continuum Higgsless models, we analyze an extensions of the three site Higgsless model, namely, the Hidden Local Symmetry (HLS) Higgsless model. We demonstrate that W_LW_L scattering in the HLS Higgsless model can very closely approximate scattering in the continuum models, provided that the parameter `a' is chosen to mimic rho-meson dominance of pi-pi scattering in QCD.

W_L W_L Scattering in Higgsless Models: Identifying Better Effective Theories

The three-site model has been offered as a benchmark for studying the collider phenomenology of Higgsless models. In this paper we analyze how well the three-site model performs as a general exemplar of Higgsless models in describing W_L W_L scattering, and which modifications can make it more representative. We employ general sum rules relating the masses and couplings of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gauge fields in continuum and deconstructed Higgsless models as a way to compare the different theories. We show that the size of the four-point vertex for the (unphysical) Nambu-Goldstone modes and the degree to which the sum rules are saturated by contributions from the lowest-lying KK resonances both provide good measures of the extent to which a highly-deconstructed theory can accurately describe the low-energy physics of a continuum 5d Higgsless model. After comparing the three-site model to flat and warped continuum models, we analyze extensions of the three-site model to a longer open linear moose with an additional U(1) group and to a ring ("BESS' or "hidden local symmetry") model with three sites and three links. Both cases may be readily analyzed in the framework of the general sum rules. We demonstrate that W_L W_L scattering in the ring model can very closely approximate scattering in the continuum models, provided that the hidden local symmetry parameter `a' is chosen to mimic rho-meson dominance of pion-pion scattering in QCD. The hadron and lepton collider phenomenology of both extended models is briefly discussed, with a focus on the complementary information to be gained from precision measurements of the Z' line shape and ZWW coupling at a high-energy lepton collider.

The Top Triangle Moose: Combining Higgsless and Topcolor Mechanisms for Mass Generation

We present the details of a deconstructed model that incorporates both Higgsless and top-color mechanisms. The model alleviates the tension between obtaining the correct top quark mass and keeping Delta rho small that exists in many Higgsless models. It does so by singling out the top quark mass generation as arising from a Yukawa coupling to an effective top-Higgs which develops a small vacuum expectation value, while electroweak symmetry breaking results largely from a Higgsless mechanism. As a result, the heavy partners of the standard model fermions can be light enough to be seen at the LHC. After presenting the model, we detail the phenomenology, showing that for a broad range of masses, these heavy fermions are discoverable at the LHC.

A comprehensive approach to new physics simulations

We describe a framework to develop, implement and validate any perturbative Lagrangian-based particle physics model for further theoretical, phenomenological and experimental studies. The starting point is FeynRules, a Mathematica package that allows to generate Feynman rules for any Lagrangian and then, through dedicated interfaces, automatically pass the corresponding relevant information to any supported Monte Carlo event generator. We prove the power, robustness and flexibility of this approach by presenting a few examples of new physics models (the Hidden Abelian Higgs Model, the general Two-Higgs-Doublet Model, the most general Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, the Minimal Higgsless Model, Universal and Large Extra Dimensions, and QCD-inspired effective Lagrangians) and their implementation/validation in FeynArts/FormCalc, CalcHep, MadGraph/MadEvent, and Sherpa.

Z to b bbar and Chiral Currents in Higgsless Models

In this note we compute the flavor-dependent chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar in the three site Higgsless model. We compute these corrections diagrammatically in the "gaugeless" limit in which the electroweak couplings vanish. We also compute the chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar using an RGE analysis in effective field theory, and show that the results agree. In the process of this computation, we compute the form of the chiral current in the gaugeless limit of the three-site model, and consider the generalization to the N-site case. We elucidate the Ward-Takahashi identities which underlie the gaugeless limit calculation in the three-site model, and describe how the result for the Z to b bbar amplitude is obtained in unitary gauge in the full theory. We find that the phenomenological constraints on the three-site Higgsless model arising from measurements of Z to b bbar are relatively mild, requiring only that the heavy Dirac fermion be heavier than 1 TeV or so, and are satisfied automatically in the range of parameters allowed by other precision electroweak data.

LHC Signatures of New Gauge Bosons in the Minimal Higgsless Model

We study the LHC signatures of new gauge bosons in the gauge-invariant minimal Higgsless model. It predicts an extra pair of W_1 and Z_1 bosons which can be as light as ~400GeV and play a key role in the delay of unitarity violation. We analyze the W_1 signals in pp --> W_0Z_0Z_0 --> jj4\ell and pp --> jj W_0Z_0 --> jj3\ellνprocesses at the LHC, including the complete electroweak and QCD backgrounds. We reveal the complementarity between these two channels for discovering the W_1 boson, and demonstrate the LHC discovery potential over the full range of allowed W_1 mass.

FeynRules - Feynman rules made easy

In this paper we present FeynRules, a new Mathematica package that facilitates the implementation of new particle physics models. After the user implements the basic model information (e.g. particle content, parameters and Lagrangian), FeynRules derives the Feynman rules and stores them in a generic form suitable for translation to any Feynman diagram calculation program. The model can then be translated to the format specific to a particular Feynman diagram calculator via FeynRules translation interfaces. Such interfaces have been written for CalcHEP/CompHEP, FeynArts/FormCalc, MadGraph/MadEvent and Sherpa, making it possible to write a new model once and have it work in all of these programs. In this paper, we describe how to implement a new model, generate the Feynman rules, use a generic translation interface, and write a new translation interface. We also discuss the details of the FeynRules code.

Low-Energy Effective Theory, Unitarity, and Non-Decoupling Behavior in a Model with Heavy Higgs-Triplet Fields

We discuss the properties of a model incorporating both a scalar electroweak Higgs doublet and an electroweak Higgs triplet. We construct the low-energy effective theory for the light Higgs-doublet in the limit of small (but nonzero) deviations in the rho parameter from one, a limit in which the triplet states become heavy. For small deviations in the rho parameter from one, perturbative unitarity of WW scattering breaks down at a scale inversely proportional to the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the triplet field (or, equivalently, inversely proportional to the square-root of the deviation of the rho parameter from one). This result imposes an upper limit on the mass-scale of the heavy triplet bosons in a perturbative theory; we show that this upper bound is consistent with dimensional analysis in the low-energy effective theory. Recent articles have shown that the triplet bosons do not decouple, in the sense that deviations in the rho parameter from one do not necessarily vanish at one-loop in the limit of large triplet mass. We clarify that, despite the non-decoupling behavior of the Higgs-triplet, this model does not violate the decoupling theorem since it incorporates a large dimensionful coupling. Nonetheless, we show that if the triplet-Higgs boson masses are of order the GUT scale, perturbative consistency of the theory requires the (properly renormalized) Higgs-triplet vacuum expectation value to be so small as to be irrelevant for electroweak phenomenology.

Unitarity and Bounds on the Scale of Fermion Mass Generation

The scale of fermion mass generation can, as shown by Appelquist and Chanowitz, be bounded from above by relating it to the scale of unitarity violation in the helicity nonconserving amplitude for fermion-anti-fermion pairs to scatter into pairs of longitudinally polarized electroweak gauge bosons. In this paper, we examine the process t tbar -> W_L W_L in a family of phenomenologically-viable deconstructed Higgsless models and we show that scale of unitarity violation depends on the mass of the additional vector-like fermion states that occur in these theories (the states that are the deconstructed analogs of Kaluza-Klein partners of the ordinary fermions in a five-dimensional theory). For sufficiently light vector fermions, and for a deconstructed theory with sufficiently many lattice sites (that is, sufficiently close to the continuum limit), the Appelquist-Chanowitz bound can be substantially weakened. More precisely, we find that, as one varies the mass of the vector-like fermion for fixed top-quark and gauge-boson masses, the bound on the scale of top-quark mass generation interpolates smoothly between the Appelquist-Chanowitz bound and one that can, potentially, be much higher. In these theories, therefore, the bound on the scale of fermion mass generation is independent of the bound on the scale of gauge-boson mass generation. While our analysis focuses on deconstructed Higgsless models, any theory in which top-quark mass generation proceeds via the mixing of chiral and vector fermions will give similar results.

Extended Technicolor Models with Two ETC Groups

We construct extended technicolor (ETC) models that can produce the large splitting between the masses of the $t$ and $b$ quarks without necessarily excessive contributions to the $ρ$ parameter or to neutral flavor-changing processes. These models make use of two different ETC gauge groups, such that left- and right-handed components of charge $Q=2/3$ quarks transform under the same ETC group, while left- and right-handed components of charge -1/3 quarks and charged leptons transform under different ETC groups. The models thereby suppress the masses $m_b$ and $m_τ$ relative to $m_t$, and $m_s$ and $m_μ$ relative to $m_c$ because the masses of the $Q=-1/3$ quarks and charged leptons require mixing between the two ETC groups, while the masses of the $Q=2/3$ quarks do not. A related source of the differences between these mass splittings is the effect of the two hierarchies of breaking scales of the two ETC groups. We analyze a particular model of this type in some detail. Although we find that this model tends to suppress the masses of the first two generations of down-type quarks and charged leptons too much, it gives useful insights into the properties of theories with more than one ETC group.

Technifermion Representations and Precision Electroweak Constraints

We discuss the selection of fermion representations in technicolor models with a view toward minimizing technicolor contributions to the precision electroweak $S$ parameter. We present and analyze models that involve one technifermion SU(2)$_L$ doublet with standard-model singlet technifermion sectors that lead to walking behavior, which further reduces $S$. We also consider models that have technifermions in higher-dimensional representations and study embeddings in extended technicolor theories.

On the Unification of Gauge Symmetries in Theories with Dynamical Symmetry Breaking

We analyze approaches to the partial or complete unification of gauge symmetries in theories with dynamical symmetry breaking. Several types of models are considered, including those that (i) involve sufficient unification to quantize electric charge, (ii) attempt to unify the three standard-model gauge interactions in a simple Lie group that forms a direct product with an extended technicolor group, and, most ambitiously, (iii) attempt to unify the standard-model gauge interactions with (extended) technicolor in a simple Lie group.

Implications of Dynamical Generation of Standard-Model Fermion Masses

We point out that if quark and lepton masses arise dynamically, then in a wide class of theories the corresponding running masses $m_{f_j}(p)$ exhibit the power-law decay $m_{f_j}(p) \propto Λ_j^2/p^2$ for Euclidean momenta $p >> Λ_j$, where $f_j$ is a fermion of generation $j$, and $Λ_j$ is the maximal scale relevant for the origin of $m_{f_j}$. We estimate resultant changes in precision electroweak quantities and compare with current data. It is found that this data allows the presence of such corrections. We also note that this power-law decay renders primitively divergent fermion mass corrections finite.
