Molecular Hyperpolarisability as a Screening Descriptor for Second-Order Nonlinear Optics in Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid Crystals

Ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals combine fluidity with macroscopic polar order. Although the archetypal NF material RM734 exhibits large nonlinear optical coefficients, most known ferroelectric nematics were designed without consideration of optical nonlinearity. Here, we assess whether electronic-structure calculations can be used to identify promising nonlinear optical candidates within known polar liquid-crystal materials. Frequency-dependent molecular hyperpolarisability tensors were calculated using a range of DFT methods and basis sets, then converted to macroscopic d-coefficients using an oriented-gas model with empirical and values. Calculated values were benchmarked against available experimental d33, d15, and d13/d31 coefficients for representative materials. We find that absolute values depend strongly on method and bulk-parameter assumptions, whereas relative trends are more useful for screening. Explicit conformer averaging does not consistently improve agreement with experiment. Applying the best-performing single-conformer protocols to a broader polar liquid-crystal dataset identifies candidate materials with enhanced predicted nonlinear optical response and reveals simple design rules based on donor-acceptor asymmetry, conjugation length, and linker choice.

The effect of side chain length on the mesomorphic properties of ferroelectric nematogens

The discovery of ferroelectric nematic phase opened new directions in the field of soft matter chemistry and physics. In this paper, we have modified a previously reported ferroelectric nematogen based on molecular structure with dimethylamino-terminated part. We have prepared two new homologues by prolonging a side chain and investigated the effect of its length on the mesomorphic properties. While previously reported homologues exhibited a direct phase transition from the isotropic (Iso) to the ferroelectric nematic phase (NF), for prolonged alkyl chain there is a narrow nematic phase (N) in between. For new compounds, we have established their mesomorphic and material properties. We have confirmed ferroelectricity of the NF phase by the polarization, SHG signal and permittivity. Finally, we have compared these parameters with respect to the side-chain length and discussed new effects, discovered for prolonged homologues due to the presence of an additional N phase.

Ferroelectric Fluids for Nonlinear Photonics: Evaluation of Temperature Dependence of Second-Order Susceptibilities

Ferroelectric nematic fluids are promising materials for tunable nonlinear photonics, with applications ranging from second harmonic generation to sources of entangled photons. However, the few reported values of second-order susceptibilities vary widely depending on the molecular architecture. Here, we systematically measure second-order NLO susceptibilities of five different materials that exhibit the ferroelectric nematic phase, as well as the more recently discovered layered smectic A ferroelectric phase. The materials investigated include archetypal molecular architectures as well as mixtures showing room-temperature ferroelectric phases. The measured values, which range from 0.3 to 20 pm/V, are here reasonably predicted by combining calculations of molecular-level hyperpolarizabilities and a simple nematic potential, highlighting the opportunities of modelling-assisted design for enhanced NLO ferroelectric fluids.

Viscous Mechano-Electric Response of Ferroelectric Nematic Liquid

Direct viscous mechano-electric response is demonstrated for a room-temperature ferroelectric nematic liquid, which combines large spontaneous electric polarization with 3D fluidity. The mechano-electric transduction is observed in the frequency range 1-200 Hz via a simple demonstrator device. The liquid is placed into a deformable container with electrodes and the electric current induced by both periodic and irregular actuation of the container is examined. The experiments reveal a rich interplay of several distinct viscous mechano-electric phenomena, where both shape deformations and material flow cause changes in the electric polarization structure of a ferroelectric nematic liquid. The results show that the mechano-electric features of the material promise a considerable applicative perspective spanning from sensitive tactile sensors to energy harvesting devices.

Optical second harmonic generation in a ferromagnetic liquid crystal

A comparative experimental investigation of the dependence of second harmonic generation (SHG) on applied external voltage between the standard nematic liquid crystalline material and an analogue ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystalline material was performed by using a fundamental optical beam at 800 nm wavelength. For a ferromagnetic material, the dependence of SHG on an applied magnetic field was also examined. Three different polarization combinations of the fundamental and the second harmonic radiation were analysed. The SHG signal observed in the former material is attributed to a combination of electric field-induced SHG (EFISHG) and flexoelectric deformation-induced SHG, while SHG signal observed in the latter material is attributed solely to flexoelectric deformation-induced SHG. The obtained dependences of the SHG signal on the associated optical retardation show that in the most favourable polarization combination the two contributions generate about the same effective nonlinear optical susceptibility.

Director switching dynamics of ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystals

Successful realization of ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystals has opened up the possibility to experimentally study a completely new set of fundamental physical phenomena. In this contribution we present a detailed investigation of some aspects of the static response and the complex dynamics of ferromagnetic liquid crystals under the application of an external magnetic field. Experimental results are then compared with a macroscopic model. Dynamics of the director were measured by optical methods and analyzed in terms of a theoretical macroscopic model. A dissipative cross-coupling coefficient describing the dynamic coupling between the two system order parameters, the magnetization and the nematic director, is needed to explain the results. In this contribution we examine the dependency of this coefficient on material parameters and the saturation magnetization and the liquid crystal host. Despite the complexity of the system, the theoretical description allows for a proper interpretation of the results and is connected to several microscopic aspects of the colloidal suspension.

Magneto-optic dynamics in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal

We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.

Comparison of dynamic behavior of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nematic suspensions

The pioneering realization of suspensions of ferroelectric nanoparticles in a nematic host was one of excellent contributions of Yuri Reznikov to the science of liquid crystals [Y. Reznikov et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 82 (2003) 191]. This achievement created great excitement as entailed the enhancement of materials dielectric properties and increase of the phase transition temperature between nematic and isotropic phase. In this contribution, we examine the spectrum of fundamental fluctuations in one of his ferroelectric suspensions by dynamic light scattering measurements, which gives insight into the coupling between the particles and the orientation of the liquid crystalline matrix. We set side by side these results with the equivalent ones obtained for the case of stable suspensions of ferromagnetic nanoplatelets in a nematic matrix showing macroscopic ferromagnetic ordering. The underlying origin of the difference between the particle-matrix coupling observed in both cases is discussed and its effect on the orientational fluctuations spectrum is compared.
