Fine representation of Hessian of convex functions and Ricci tensor on RCD spaces

It is known that on $\mathrm{RCD}$ spaces one can define a distributional Ricci tensor ${\bf Ric}$. Here we give a fine description of this object by showing that it admits the polar decomposition $${\bf Ric}=ω\,|{\bf Ric}|$$ for a suitable non-negative measure $|{\bf Ric}|$ and unitary tensor field $ω$. The regularity of both the mass measure and of the polar vector are also described. The representation provided here allows to answer some open problems about the structure of the Ricci tensor in such singular setting. Our discussion also covers the case of Hessians of convex functions and, under suitable assumptions on the base space, of the Sectional curvature operator.

On the regularity of harmonic maps from ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ to ${\sf CAT}(0)$ spaces and related results

For an harmonic map $u$ from a domain $U\subset{\rm X}$ in an ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ space ${\rm X}$ to a ${\sf CAT}(0)$ space ${\rm Y}$ we prove the Lipschitz estimate \[ {\rm Lip}(u|_B)\leq \frac {C(K^-R^2,N)}r\inf_{{\sf o}\in {\rm Y}}\,\sqrt{\frac1{{\mathfrak m}(2B)}\int_{2B}{\sf d}_{\rm Y}^2(u(\cdot),{\sf o})\, {\rm d}{\mathfrak m}}, \qquad \forall 2B\subset U \] where $r\in(0,R)$ is the radius of $B$. This is obtained by combining classical Moser's iteration, a Bochner-type inequality that we derive (guided by recent works of Zhang-Zhu) together with a reverse Poincaré inequality that is also established here. A direct consequence of our estimate is a Lioville-Yau type theorem in the case $K=0$. Among the ingredients we develop for the proof, a variational principle valid in general ${\sf RCD}$ spaces is particularly relevant. It can be roughly stated as: if $({\rm X},{\sf d},{\mathfrak m})$ is ${\sf RCD}(K,\infty)$ and $f\in C_b({\rm X})$ is so that $Δf\leq C$ for some constant $C>0$, then for every $t>0$ and ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ $x\in{\rm X}$ there is a unique minimizer $F_t(x)$ for $ y\ \mapsto\ f(y)+\frac{{\sf d}^2(x,y)}{2t} $ and the map $F_t$ satisfies \[ (F_t)_*{\mathfrak m}\leq e^{t(C+2K^-{\sf Osc}(f))}{\mathfrak m},\qquad\text{where}\qquad {\sf Osc}(f):=\sup f-\inf f. \] Here existence is in place without any sort of compactness assumption and uniqueness should be intended in a sense analogue to that in place for Regular Lagrangian Flows and Optimal Maps (and is related to both these concepts). Finally, we also obtain a Rademacher-type result for Lipschitz maps between spaces as above.

About the general chain rule for functions of bounded variation

We give an alternative proof of the general chain rule for functions of bounded variation ([ADM90]), which allows to compute the distributional differential of $φ\circ F$, where $φ\in \mathrm{LIP}(\mathbb{R}^m)$ and $F\in\mathrm{BV}(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R}^m)$. In our argument we build on top of recently established links between `closability of certain differentiation operators' and `differentiability of Lipschitz functions in related directions' ([ABM23]): we couple this with the observation that `the map that takes $φ$ and returns the distributional differential of $φ\circ F$ is closable' to conclude. Unlike previous results in this direction, our proof can directly be adapted to the non-smooth setting of finite dimensional RCD spaces.

De Giorgi and Gromov working together

The title is meant as way to honor two great mathematicians that, although never actually worked together, introduced concepts of convergence that perfectly match each other and very fruitfully interact: De Giorgi's $Γ$-convergence of lower semicontinuous functions and Gromov's convergence of geometric structures.

On the notion of Laplacian bounds on $\mathrm{RCD}$ spaces and applications

We show that several different interpretations of the inequality $Δf\leqη$ are equivalent in the setting of $\mathrm{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. With respect to previously available results in this direction, we improve both on the generality of the underlying space and in terms of regularity to be assumed on the function $f$. Applications are presented.

A note about charts built by Eriksson-Bique and Soultanis on metric measure spaces

This note is motivated by recent studies by Eriksson-Bique and Soultanis about the construction of charts in general metric measure spaces. We analyze their construction and provide an alternative and simpler proof of the fact that these charts exist on sets of finite Hausdorff dimension. The observation made here offers also some simplification about the study of the relation between the reference measure and the charts in the setting of $\text{RCD}$ spaces.

Weakly non-collapsed RCD spaces are strongly non-collapsed

We prove that any weakly non-collapsed RCD space is actually non-collapsed, up to a renormalization of the measure. This confirms a conjecture raised by De Philippis and the second named author in full generality. One of the auxiliary results of independent interest that we obtain is about the link between the properties $\quad$- $\mathrm{tr}(\mathrm{Hess}f)=Δf$ on $U\subset\mathsf{X}$ for every $f$ sufficiently regular, $\quad$- $\mathfrak{m}=c\mathscr{H}^n$ on $U\subset\mathsf{X}$ for some $c>0$, where $U\subset \mathsf{X}$ is open and $\mathsf{X}$ is a - possibly collapsed - RCD space of essential dimension $n$.

A first-order condition for the independence on $p$ of weak gradients

It is well known that on arbitrary metric measure spaces, the notion of minimal $p$-weak upper gradient may depend on $p$. In this paper we investigate how a first-order condition of the metric-measure structure, that we call Bounded Interpolation Property, guarantees that in fact such dependence is not present. We also show that the Bounded Interpolation Property is stable for pointed measure Gromov Hausdorff convergence and holds on a large class of spaces satisfying curvature dimension conditions.

Duals and pullbacks of normed modules

We give a general description of the dual of the pullback of a normed module. Ours is the natural generalization to the context of modules of the well-known fact that the dual of the Lebesgue-Bochner space $L^p([0,1],B)$ consists - quite roughly said - of $L^q$ maps from $[0,1]$ to the dual $B'$ of $B$ equipped with the weak$^*$ topology. In order to state our result, we study various fiberwise descriptions of a normed module that are of independent interest.

Local vector measures

Consider a BV function on a Riemannian manifold. What is its differential? And what about the Hessian of a convex function? These questions have clear answers in terms of (co)vector/matrix valued measures if the manifold is the Euclidean space. In more general curved contexts, the same objects can be perfectly understood via charts. However, charts are often unavailable in the less regular setting of metric geometry, where still the questions make sense. In this paper we propose a way to deal with this sort of problems and, more generally, to give a meaning to a concept of `measure acting in duality with sections of a given bundle', loosely speaking. Despite the generality, several classical results in measure theory like Riesz's and Alexandrov's theorems have a natural counterpart in this setting. Moreover, as we are going to discuss, the notions introduced here provide a unified framework for several key concepts in nonsmooth analysis that have been introduced more than two decades ago, such as: Ambrosio-Kirchheim's metric currents, Cheeger's Sobolev functions and Miranda's BV functions. Not surprisingly, the understanding of the structure of these objects improves with the regularity of the underlying space. We are particularly interested in the case of $\RCD$ spaces where, as we will argue, the regularity of several key measures of the type we study nicely matches the known regularity theory for vector fields, resulting in a very effective theory. We expect that the notions developed here will help creating stronger links between differential calculus in Alexandrov spaces (based on Perelman's DC charts) and in $\RCD$ ones (based on intrinsic tensor calculus).

Calculus and fine properties of functions of bounded variation on RCD spaces

We generalize the classical calculus rules satisfied by functions of bounded variation to the framework of RCD spaces. In the infinite dimensional setting we are able to define an analogue of the distributional differential and on finite dimensional spaces we prove fine properties and suitable calculus rules, such as the Vol'pert chain rule for vector valued functions.

Monotonicity formulas for harmonic functions in ${\rm RCD}(0,N)$ spaces

We generalize to the ${\rm RCD}(0,N)$ setting a family of monotonicity formulas by Colding and Minicozzi for positive harmonic functions in Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature. Rigidity and almost rigidity statements are also proven, the second appearing to be new even in the smooth setting. Motivated by the recent work in [AFM] we also introduce the notion of electrostatic potential in ${\rm RCD}$ spaces, which also satisfies our monotonicity formulas. Our arguments are mainly based on new estimates for harmonic functions in ${\rm RCD}(K,N)$ spaces and on a new functional version of the `(almost) outer volume cone implies (almost) outer metric cone' theorem.

Korevaar-Schoen's energy on strongly rectifiable spaces

We extend Korevaar-Schoen's theory of metric valued Sobolev maps to cover the case of the source space being an RCD space. In this situation it appears that no version of the `subpartition lemma' holds: to obtain both existence of the limit of the approximated energies and the lower semicontinuity of the limit energy we shall rely on: - the fact that such spaces are `strongly rectifiable' a notion which is first-order in nature (as opposed to measure-contraction-like properties, which are of second order). This fact is particularly useful in combination with Kirchheim's metric differentiability theorem, as it allows to obtain an approximate metric differentiability result which in turn quickly provides a representation for the energy density, - the differential calculus developed by the first author which allows, thanks to a representation formula for the energy that we prove here, to obtain the desired lower semicontinuity from the closure of the abstract differential. When the target space is CAT(0) we can also identify the energy density as the Hilbert-Schmidt norm of the differential, in line with the smooth situation.

Parallel transport on non-collapsed $\mathsf{RCD}(K,N)$ spaces

We provide a general theory for parallel transport on non-collapsed ${\sf RCD}$ spaces obtaining both existence and uniqueness results. Our theory covers the case of geodesics and, more generally, of curves obtained via the flow of sufficiently regular time dependent vector fields: the price that we pay for this generality is that we cannot study parallel transport along a single such curve, but only along almost all of these (in a sense related to the notions of Sobolev vector calculus and Regular Lagrangian Flow in the nonsmooth setting). The class of ${\sf ncRCD}$ spaces contains finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces with curvature bounded from below, thus our construction provides a way of speaking about parallel transport in this latter setting alternative to the one proposed by Petrunin (1998). The precise relation between the two approaches is yet to be understood.

A differential perspective on Gradient Flows on ${\sf CAT}(κ)$-spaces and applications

We review the theory of Gradient Flows in the framework of convex and lower semicontinuous functionals on ${\sf CAT}(κ)$-spaces and prove that they can be characterized by the same differential inclusion $y_t'\in-\partial^-{\sf E}(y_t)$ one uses in the smooth setting and more precisely that $y_t'$ selects the element of minimal norm in $-\partial^-{\sf E}(y_t)$. This generalizes previous results in this direction where the energy was also assumed to be Lipschitz. We then apply such result to the Korevaar-Schoen energy functional on the space of $L^2$ and ${\sf CAT}(0)$ valued maps: we define the Laplacian of such $L^2$ map as the element of minimal norm in $-\partial^-{\sf E}(u)$, provided it is not empty. The theory of gradient flows ensures that the set of maps admitting a Laplacian is $L^2$-dense. Basic properties of this Laplacian are then studied.

Partial derivatives in the nonsmooth setting

We study partial derivatives on the product of two metric measure structures, in particular in connection with calculus via modules as proposed by the first named author. Our main results are 1) The extension to this non-smooth framework of Schwarz's theorem about symmetry of mixed second derivatives, 2) a quite complete set of results relating the property $f\in W^{2,2}(\X\times\Y)$ on one side with that of $f(\cdot,y)\in W^{2,2}(\X)$ and $f(x,\cdot)\in W^{2,2}(\Y)$ for a.e.\ $y,x$ respectively on the other. Here $\X,\Y$ are $\RCD$ spaces so that second order Sobolev spaces are well defined. \end{itemize} These results are in turn based upon the study of Sobolev regularity, and of the underlying notion of differential, for a map with values in a Hilbert module: we mainly apply this notion to the map $x\mapsto\d_\sy f(x,\cdot)$ in order to build, under the appropriate regularity requirements, its differential $\d_\sx\d_\sy f$.

Korevaar-Schoen's directional energy and Ambrosio's regular Lagrangian flows

We develop Korevaar-Schoen's theory of directional energies for metric-valued Sobolev maps in the case of ${\sf RCD}$ source spaces; to do so we crucially rely on Ambrosio's concept of Regular Lagrangian Flow. Our review of Korevaar-Schoen's spaces brings new (even in the smooth category) insights on some aspects of the theory, in particular concerning the notion of `differential of a map along a vector field' and about the parallelogram identity for ${\sf CAT}(0)$ targets. To achieve these, one of the ingredients we use is a new (even in the Euclidean setting) stability result for Regular Lagrangian Flows.

Global Lipschitz extension preserving local constants

The intent of this short note is to extend real valued Lipschitz functions on metric spaces, while locally preserving the asymptotic Lipschitz constant. We then apply this results to give a simple and direct proof of the fact that Sobolev spaces on metric measure spaces defined with a relaxation approach à la Cheeger are invariant under isomorphism class of mm-structures.
