Displacement convexity of Entropy and the distance cost Optimal Transportation

During the last decade Optimal Transport had a relevant role in the study of geometry of singular spaces that culminated with the Lott-Sturm-Villani theory. The latter is built on the characterisation of Ricci curvature lower bounds in terms of displacement convexity of certain entropy functionals along $W_{2}$-geodesics. Substantial recent advancements in the theory (localization paradigm and local-to-global property) have been obtained considering the different point of view of $L^1$-Optimal transport problems yielding a different curvature dimension $\mathsf{CD}^{1}(K,N)$ [8] formulated in terms of one-dimensional curvature properties of integral curves of Lipschitz maps. In this note we show that the two approaches produce the same curvature-dimension condition reconciling the two definitions. In particular we show that the $\mathsf{CD}^{1}(K,N)$ condition can be formulated in terms of displacement convexity along $W_{1}$-geodesics.

Quasi-continuous vector fields on RCD spaces

In the existing language for tensor calculus on RCD spaces, tensor fields are only defined m-a.e.. In this paper we introduce the concept of tensor field defined `2-capacity-a.e.' and discuss in which sense Sobolev vector fields have a 2-capacity-a.e. uniquely defined quasi-continuous representative.

Riemann curvature tensor on ${\sf RCD}$ spaces and possible applications

We show that on every ${\sf RCD}$ spaces it is possible to introduce, by a distributional-like approach, a Riemann curvature tensor. Since after the works of Petrunin and Zhang-Zhu we know that finite dimensional Alexandrov spaces are ${\sf RCD}$ spaces, our construction applies in particular to the Alexandrov setting. We conjecture that an ${\sf RCD}$ space is Alexandrov if and only if the sectional curvature - defined in terms of such abstract Riemann tensor - is bounded from below.

Infinitesimal Hilbertianity of locally CAT($κ$)-spaces

We show that, given a metric space $(Y,d)$ of curvature bounded from above in the sense of Alexandrov, and a positive Radon measure $μ$ on $Y$ giving finite mass to bounded sets, the resulting metric measure space $(Y,d,μ)$ is infinitesimally Hilbertian, i.e. the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(Y,d,μ)$ is a Hilbert space. The result is obtained by constructing an isometric embedding of the `abstract and analytical' space of derivations into the `concrete and geometrical' bundle whose fibre at $x\in Y$ is the tangent cone at $x$ of $Y$. The conclusion then follows from the fact that for every $x\in Y$ such a cone is a CAT(0)-space and, as such, has a Hilbert-like structure.

Differential of metric valued Sobolev maps

We introduce a notion of differential of a Sobolev map between metric spaces. The differential is given in the framework of tangent and cotangent modules of metric measure spaces, developed by the first author. We prove that our notion is consistent with Kirchheim's metric differential when the source is a Euclidean space, and with the abstract differential provided by the first author when the target is $\mathbb{R}$.

Second order differentiation formula on $RCD(K,N)$ spaces

We prove the second order differentiation formula along geodesics in finite-dimensional $RCD(K,N)$ spaces. Our approach strongly relies on the approximation of $W_2$-geodesics by entropic interpolations and, in order to implement this approximation procedure, on the proof of new (even in the smooth setting) estimates for such interpolations.

Benamou-Brenier and duality formulas for the entropic cost on $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces

In this paper we prove that, within the framework of $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces with $N < \infty$, the entropic cost (i.e. the minimal value of the Schrödinger problem) admits: - a threefold dynamical variational representation, in the spirit of the Benamou-Brenier formula for the Wasserstein distance; - a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman dual representation, in line with Bobkov-Gentil-Ledoux and Otto-Villani results on the duality between Hamilton-Jacobi and continuity equation for optimal transport; - a Kantorovich-type duality formula, where the Hopf-Lax semigroup is replaced by a suitable `entropic' counterpart. We thus provide a complete and unifying picture of the equivalent variational representations of the Schrödinger problem (still missing even in the Riemannian setting) as well as a perfect parallelism with the analogous formulas for the Wasserstein distance.

Second order differentiation formula on $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces

Aim of this paper is to prove the second order differentiation formula for $H^{2,2}$ functions along geodesics in $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces with $N < \infty$. This formula is new even in the context of Alexandrov spaces, where second order differentiation is typically related to semiconvexity. We establish this result by showing that $W_2$-geodesics can be approximated up to second order, in a sense which we shall make precise, by entropic interpolation. In turn this is achieved by proving new, even in the smooth setting, estimates concerning entropic interpolations which we believe are interesting on their own. In particular we obtain: - equiboundedness of the densities along the entropic interpolations, - local equi-Lipschitz continuity of the Schrödinger potentials, - a uniform weighted $L^2$ control of the Hessian of such potentials. Finally, the techniques adopted in this paper can be used to show that in the $RCD$ setting the viscous solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be obtained via a vanishing viscosity method, in accordance with the smooth case. With respect to a previous version, where the space was assumed to be compact, in this paper the second order differentiation formula is proved in full generality.

Rigidity for the spectral gap on $RCD(K,\infty)$-spaces

We consider a rigidity problem for the spectral gap of the Laplacian on an $RCD(K,\infty)$-space (a metric measure space satisfying the Riemannian curvature-dimension condition) for positive $K$. For a weighted Riemannian manifold, Cheng--Zhou showed that the sharp spectral gap is achieved only when a $1$-dimensional Gaussian space is split off. This can be regarded as an infinite-dimensional counterpart to Obata's rigidity theorem. Generalizing to $RCD(K,\infty)$-spaces is not straightforward due to the lack of smooth structure and doubling condition. We employ the lift of an eigenfunction to the Wasserstein space and the theory of regular Lagrangian flows recently developed by Ambrosio--Trevisan to overcome this difficulty.

Sobolev spaces on warped products

We study the structure of Sobolev spaces on the cartesian/warped products of a given metric measure space and an interval. Our main results are: - the characterization of the Sobolev spaces in such products - the proof that, under natural assumptions, the warped products possess the Sobolev-to-Lipschitz property, which is key for geometric applications. The results of this paper have been needed in the recent proof of the `volume-cone-to-metric-cone' property of ${\sf RCD}$ spaces obtained by the first author and De Philippis.

Lecture notes on differential calculus on RCD spaces

These are extended notes of the course given by the author at RIMS, Kyoto, in October 2016. The aim is to give a self-contained overview on the recently developed approach to differential calculus on metric measure spaces. The effort is directed into giving as many ideas as possible, without losing too much time in technical details and utmost generality: for this reason many statements are given under some simplifying assumptions and proofs are sometimes only sketched.

Behaviour of the reference measure on $\sf RCD$ spaces under charts

Mondino and Naber recently proved that finite dimensional $\sf RCD$ spaces are rectifiable. Here we show that the push-forward of the reference measure under the charts built by them is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result, read in conjunction with another recent work of us, has relevant implications on the structure of tangent spaces to $\sf RCD$ spaces. A key tool that we use is a recent paper by De Philippis-Rindler about the structure of measures on the Euclidean space.
