On the (dis)continuity of the Fourier transform of measures

In this paper, we will study the continuity of the Fourier transform of measures with respect to the vague topology. We show that the Fourier transform is vaguely discontinuous on R, but becomes continuous when restricting to a class of Fourier transformable measures such that either the measures, or their Fourier transforms are equi-translation bounded. We discuss continuity of the Fourier transform in the product and norm topology. We show that vague convergence of positive definite measures implies the equi translation boundedness of the Fourier transforms, which explains the continuity of the Fourier transform on the cone of positive definite measures. In the appendix, we characterize vague precompactness of a set a measures in arbitrary LCAG, and the necessity of second countability property of a group for defining the autocorrelation measure.

On norm almost periodic measures

In this paper, we study norm almost periodic measures on locally compact Abelian groups. First, we show that the norm almost periodicity of $μ$ is equivalent to the equi-Bohr almost periodicity of $μ*g$ for all $g$ in a fixed family of functions. Then, we show that, for absolutely continuous measures, norm almost periodicity is equivalent to the Stepanov almost periodicity of the Radon--Nikodym density.

On the Fourier Analysis of Measures with Meyer Set Support

In this paper we show the existence of the generalized Eberlein decomposition for Fourier transformable measures with Meyer set support. We prove that each of the three components is also Fourier transformable and has Meyer set support. We obtain that each of the pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous components of the Fourier transform is a strong almost periodic measure, and hence is either trivial or has relatively dense support. We next prove that the Fourier transform of a measure with Meyer set support is norm almost periodic, and hence so is each of the pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous components. We show that a measure with Meyer set support is Fourier transformable if and only if it is a linear combination of positive definite measures, which can be chosen with Meyer set support, solving a particular case of an open problem. We complete the paper by discussing some applications to the diffraction of weighted Dirac combs with Meyer set support.

Diffraction of compatible random substitutions in one dimension

As a guiding example, the diffraction measure of a random local mixture of the two classic Fibonacci substitutions is determined and reanalysed via self-similar measures of Hutchinson type, defined by a finite family of contractions. Our revised approach yields explicit formulas for the pure point and the absolutely continuous parts, as well as a proof for the absence of singular continuous components. This approach is then extended to the family of random noble means substitutions and, as an example with an underlying 2-adic structure, to a locally randomised version of the period doubling chain. As a first step towards a more general approach, we interpret our findings in terms of a disintegration over the Kronecker factor, which is the maximal equicontinuous factor of a covering model set.

Pure point diffraction and Poisson summation

We prove that the diffraction formula for regular model sets is equivalent to the Poisson Summation Formula for the underlying lattice. This is achieved using Fourier analysis of unbounded measures on locally compact abelian groups as developed by Argabright and de Lamadrid. We also obtain diffraction results for certain classes of non-regular so-called weak model sets.

On the Fourier Transformability of Strongly Almost Periodic Measures

In this paper we characterize the Fourier transformability of a strongly almost periodic measure in terms of an integrability condition for its Fourier Bohr series. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a strongly almost periodic measure to be a Fourier transform of a measure. We discuss the Fourier transformability of a measure on $\RR^d$ in terms of its Fourier transform as a tempered distribution. We conclude by looking at a large class of such measures coming from the cut and project formalism.

A short guide to pure point diffraction in cut-and-project sets

We briefly review the diffraction of quasicrystals and then give an elementary alternative proof of the diffraction formula for regular cut-and-project sets, which is based on Bochner's theorem from Fourier analysis. This clarifies a common view that the diffraction of a quasicrystal is determined by the diffraction of its underlying lattice. To illustrate our approach, we will also treat a number of well-known explicitly solvable examples.

A note on measures vanishing at infinity

In this paper, we review the basic properties of measures vanishing at infinity and prove a version of the Riemann--Lebesgue lemma for Fourier transformable measures.

On Weakly Almost Periodic Measures

We study the diffraction and dynamical properties of translation bounded weakly almost periodic measures. We prove that the dynamical hull of a weakly almost periodic measure is a weakly almost periodic dynamical system with unique minimal component given by the hull of the strongly almost periodic component of the measure. In particular the hull is minimal if and only if the measure is strongly almost periodic and the hull is always measurably conjugate to a torus and has pure point spectrum with continuous eigenfunctions. As an application we show the stability of the class of weighted Dirac combs with Meyer set or FLC support and deduce that such measures have either trivial or large pure point respectively continuous spectrum. We complement these results by investigating the Eberlein convolution of two weakly almost periodic measures. Here, we show that it is unique and a strongly almost periodic measure. We conclude by studying the Fourier-Bohr coefficients of weakly almost periodic measures.

Diffraction theory and almost periodic distributions

We introduce and study the notions of translation bounded tempered distributions, and autocorrelation for a tempered distrubution. We further introduce the spaces of weakly, strongly and null weakly almost periodic tempered distributions and show that for weakly almost periodic tempered distributions the Eberlein decomposition holds. For translation bounded measures all these notions coincide with the classical ones. We show that tempered distributions with measure Fourier transform are weakly almost periodic and that for this class, the Eberlein decomposition is exactly the Fourier dual of the Lesbegue decomposition, with the Fourier-Bohr coefficients specifying the pure point part of the Fourier transform. We complete the project by looking at few interesting examples.

On weak model sets of extremal density

The theory of regular model sets is highly developed, but does not cover examples such as the visible lattice points, the k-th power-free integers, or related systems. They belong to the class of weak model sets, where the window may have a boundary of positive measure, or even consists of boundary only. The latter phenomena are related to the topological entropy of the corresponding dynamical system and to various other unusual properties. Under a rather natural extremality assumption on the density of the weak model set we establish its pure point diffraction nature. We derive an explicit formula that can be seen as the generalisation of the case of regular model sets. Furthermore, the corresponding natural patch frequency measure is shown to be ergodic. Since weak model sets of extremal density are generic for this measure, one obtains that the dynamical spectrum of the hull is pure point as well.

Almost Periodic Measures and Meyer Sets

In the first part, we construct a cut and project scheme from a family $\{P_\varepsilon\}$ of sets verifying four conditions. We use this construction to characterize weighted Dirac combs defined by cut and project schemes and by continuous functions on the internal groups in terms of almost periodicity. We are also able to characterise those weighted Dirac combs for which the internal function is compactly supported. Lastly, using the same cut and project construction for $\varepsilon$-dual sets, we are able to characterise Meyer sets in $σ$-compact locally compact Abelian groups.

Note on the set of Bragg peaks with high intensity

We consider diffraction of Delone sets in Euclidean space. We show that the set of Bragg peaks with high intensity is always Meyer (if it is relatively dense). We use this to provide a new characterization for Meyer sets in terms of positive and positive definite measures. Our results are based on a careful study of positive definite measures, which may be of interest in its own right.

On Weighted Dirac Combs Supported Inside Model Sets

In this paper we prove that given a weakly almost periodic measure $μ$ supported inside some model set $Λ(W)$ with closed window $W$, then the strongly almost periodic component $μ_S$ and the null weakly almost periodic component $μ_0$ are both supported inside $Λ(W)$. As a consequence we prove that given any translation bounded measure $ω$, supported inside some model set, then each of the pure point diffraction spectrum $\hatγ_{pp}$ and the continuous diffraction spectrum $\hatγ_c$ is either trivial or have a relatively dense support.

On the Bragg Diffraction Spectra of a Meyer Set

Meyer sets have a relatively dense set of Bragg peaks and for this reason they may be considered as basic mathematical examples of (aperiodic) crystals. In this paper we investigate the pure point part of the diffraction of Meyer sets in more detail. The results are of two kinds. First we show that given a Meyer set and any intensity a less than the maximum intensity of its Bragg peaks, the set of Bragg peaks whose intensity exceeds a is itself a Meyer set (in the Fourier space). Second we show that if a Meyer set is modified by addition and removal of points in such a way that its density is not altered too much (the allowable amount being given explicitly as a proportion of the original density) then the newly obtained set still has a relatively dense set of Bragg peaks.

Positive Positive Definite Discrete Strong Almost Periodic Measures and Bragg Diffraction

In this paper we prove that the cone $\PPD$ of positive, positive definite, discrete and strong almost periodic measures has an interesting property: given any positive and positive definite measure $μ$ smaller than some measure in $\PPD$, then the strong almost periodic part $μ_S$ of $μ$ is also in $\PPD$. We then use this result to prove that given a positive weighted comb $ω$ with finite local complexity and pure point diffraction, any positive comb less than $ω$ has either trivial Bragg spectrum or a relatively dense set of Bragg peaks.

Pure Point spectrum for measure dynamical systems on locally compact Abelian groups

We show equivalence of pure point diffraction and pure point dynamical spectrum for measurable dynamical systems build from locally finite measures on locally compact Abelian groups. This generalizes all earlier results of this type. Our approach is based on a study of almost periodicity in a Hilbert space. It allows us to set up a perturbation theory for arbitrary equivariant measurable perturbations.
