Why do Meyer sets diffract?

Given a weak model set in a locally compact Abelian, group we construct a relatively dense set of common Bragg peaks for all its subsets that have non-trivial Bragg spectrum. Next, we construct a relatively dense set of common norm almost periods for the diffraction, pure point, absolutely continuous and singular continuous spectrum, respectively, of all its subsets. We use the Fibonacci model set to illustrate these phenomena. We extend all these results to arbitrary translation bounded weighted Dirac combs supported within some Meyer set. We complete the paper by discussing extensions of the existence of the generalized Eberlein decomposition for measures supported within some Meyer set.

On the orthogonality of measures of different spectral type with respect to twisted Eberlein convolution

In this paper we show that under suitable conditions on their Fourier--Bohr coefficients, the twisted Eberlein convolution of a measure with pure point diffraction spectra and a measure with continuous diffraction spectra is zero. In particular, the diffraction spectrum of a linear combinations of the two measures is simply the linear combinations of the two diffraction spectra with absolute value square coefficients.

The (twisted) Eberlein convolution of measures

In this paper, we study the properties of the Eberlein convolution of measures and introduce a twisted version of it. For functions we show that the twisted Eberlein convolution can be seen as a translation invariant function-valued inner product. We study its regularity properties and show its existence on suitable sets of functions. For translation bounded measures we show that the (twisted) Eberlein convolution always exists along subsequences of the given sequence, and is a weakly almost periodic and Fourier transformable measure. We prove that if one of the two measures is mean almost periodic, then the (twisted) Eberlein convolution is strongly almost periodic. Moreover, if one of the measures is norm almost periodic, so is the (twisted) Eberlein convolution.

Inter model sets in $\mathbb R^d$ are model sets

We show that any translate of a model set is a model set in some modified cut-and-project scheme. Restricting to Euclidean direct space, we show that any translate of an inter model set is a model set in some modified cut-and-project scheme with second countable internal space. In both cases, the window in the modified cut-and-project scheme inherits the topological and measure-theoretic properties of the original window. Our results hold in fact for a class beyond inter model sets, which we call almost model sets.

A note on tempered measures

The relation between tempered distributions and measures is analysed and clarified. While this is straightforward for positive measures, it is surprisingly subtle for signed or complex measures.

Abstract almost periodicity for group actions on uniform topological spaces

We present a unified theory for the almost periodicity of functions with values in an arbitrary Banach space, measures and distributions via almost periodic elements for the action of a locally compact abelian group on a uniform topological space. We discuss the relation between Bohr and Bochner type almost periodicity, and similar conditions, and how the equivalence among such conditions relates to properties of the group action and the uniformity. We complete the paper by demonstrating how various examples considered earlier all fit in our framework.

Spectrum of weak model sets with Borel windows

Consider the extended hull of a weak model set together with its natural shift action. Equip the extended hull with the Mirsky measure, which is a certain natural pattern frequency measure. It is known that the extended hull is a measure-theoretic factor of some group rotation, which is called the underlying torus. Among other results, in the article "Periods and factors of weak model sets" we showed that the extended hull is isomorphic to a factor group of the torus, where certain periods of the window of the weak model set have been factored out. This was proved for weak model sets having a compact window. In this note, we argue that the same results hold for arbitrary measurable and relatively compact windows. Our arguments crucially rely on Moody's work on uniform distribution in model sets. We also discuss implications for the diffraction of such weak model sets and discuss a new class of examples which are generic for the Mirsky measure.

Fourier Transformable Measures with Meyer set support and their lift to the cut and project scheme

In this paper, we prove that given a cut-and-project scheme $(G, H, \mathcal{L})$ and a compact window $W \subseteq H$, the natural projection gives a bijection between the Fourier transformable measures on $G \times H$ supported inside the strip $\cL \cap (G \times W)$ and the Fourier transformable measures supported inside $\oplam(W)$, and relate their Fourier transforms. We use this formula to relate the Fourier transforms of the measures, and explain how one can use this relation to re-derive some known results about Fourier analysis of measures with Meyer set support.

Leptin densities in amenable groups

Consider a positive Borel measure on a locally compact group. We define a notion of uniform density for such a measure, which is based on a group invariant introduced by Leptin in 1966. We then restrict to unimodular amenable groups and to translation bounded measures. In that case our density notion coincides with the well-known Beurling density from Fourier analysis, also known as Banach density from dynamical systems theory. We use Leptin densities for a geometric proof of the model set density formula, which expresses the density of a uniform regular model set in terms of the volume of its window, and for a proof of uniform mean almost periodicity of such model sets.

Semi-measures and their Fourier transform

The basic theory of semi-measures on locally compact Abelian groups is extended to prove the existence of a generalised Eberlein decomposition into such semi-measures.

Tempered distributions with translation bounded measure as Fourier transform and the generalized Eberlein decomposition

In this paper, we study the class of tempered distributions whose Fourier transform is a translation bounded measure and show that each such distribution in $\mathbb{R}^d$ has order at most $2d$. We show the existence of the generalized Eberlein decomposition within this class of distributions, and its compatibility with all previous Eberlein decompositions. The generalized Eberlein decomposition for Fourier transformable measures and properties of its components are discussed. Lastly, we take a closer look at the absolutely continuous spectrum of measures supported on Meyer sets.

Eberlein decomposition for PV inflation systems

The Dirac combs of primitive Pisot--Vijayaraghavan (PV) inflations on the real line or, more generally, in $\mathbb{R}^d$ are analysed. We construct a mean-orthogonal splitting for such Dirac combs that leads to the classic Eberlein decomposition on the level of the pair correlation measures, and thus to the separation of pure point versus continuous spectral components in the corresponding diffraction measures. This is illustrated with two guiding examples, and an extension to more general systems with randomness is outlined.

Model sets with precompact Borel windows

Given a cut and project scheme and a pre-compact Borel window we show that almost surely all positions of the window give rise to point sets with Besicovitch almost periodic Dirac combs. In particular, all those positions lead to pure point diffractive point sets with autocorrelation given by the covariogram of the window and diffraction given by the square of the Fourier transform of the window. Moreover the Fourier--Bohr coefficients exist and the intensity of the Bragg peaks is given by their absolute value square. We show the existence of an ergodic measure with pure point dynamical spectrum such that all those window positions give rise to point sets which are generic for this measure. We complete the paper by reanalysing the class of weak model sets of maximal density.

Modulated crystals and almost periodic measures

Modulated crystals and quasicrystals can simultaneously be described as modulated quasicrystals, a class of point sets introduced by de Bruijn in 1987. With appropriate modulation functions, modulated quasicrystals themselves constitute a substantial subclass of strongly almost periodic point measures. We re-analyse these structures using methods from modern mathematical diffraction theory, thereby providing a coherent view over that class. Similarly to de Bruijn's analysis, we find stability with respect to almost periodic modulations.

Pure point spectrum for dynamical systems and mean almost periodicity

We consider metrizable ergodic topological dynamical systems over locally compact, $σ$-compact abelian groups. We study pure point spectrum via suitable notions of almost periodicity for the points of the dynamical system. More specifically, we characterize pure point spectrum via mean almost periodicity of generic points. We then go on and show how Besicovitch almost periodic points determine both eigenfunctions and the measure in this case. After this, we characterize those systems arising from Weyl almost periodic points and use this to characterize weak and Bohr almost periodic systems. Finally, we consider applications to aperiodic order.

On arithmetic progressions in model sets

In this project we show the existence of arbitrary length arithmetic progressions in model sets and Meyer sets in the Euclidean $d$-space. We prove a van der Waerden type theorem for Meyer sets. We show that pure point subsets of Meyer sets with positive density and pure point diffraction contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrary length.

Pure point measures with sparse support and sparse Fourier--Bohr support

Fourier-transformable Radon measures are called doubly sparse when both the measure and its transform are pure point measures with sparse support. Their structure is reasonably well understood in Euclidean space, based on the use of tempered distributions. Here, we extend the theory to second countable, locally compact Abelian groups, where we can employ general cut and project schemes and the structure of weighted model combs, along with the theory of almost periodic measures. In particular, for measures with Meyer set support, we characterise sparseness of the Fourier--Bohr spectrum via conditions of crystallographic type, and derive representations of the measures in terms of trigonometric polynomials. More generally, we analyse positive definite, doubly sparse measures in a natural cut and project setting, which results in a Poisson summation type formula.
