Modeling of the driver transverse profile for laser wakefield electron acceleration at APOLLON Research Facility

The quality of electron bunches accelerated by laser wakefields is highly dependant on the temporal and spatial features of the laser driver. Analysis of experiments performed at APOLLON PW-class laser facility shows that spatial instabilities of the focal spot, such as shot-to-shot pointing fluctuations or asymmetry of the transverse fluence, lead to charge and energy degradation of the accelerated electron bunch. It is shown that PIC simulations can reproduce experimental results with a significantly higher accuracy when the measured laser asymmetries are included in the simulated laser's transverse profile, compared to simulations with ideal, symmetric laser profile. A method based on a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iterative algorithm is used to retrieve the laser electric field from fluence measurements in vacuum in the focal volume, and accurately reproduce experimental results using PIC simulations, leading to simulated electron spectra in close agreement with experimental results, for the accelerated charge, energy distribution and pointing of the electron beam at the exit of the plasma.

Status report of the ESCULAP project at Orsay: External injection of low energy electrons in a Plasma

The ESCULAP project aims at studying external injection of low energy (\SI{10}{MeV}) electrons in a plasma in the quasilinear regime. This facility will use the photo injector PHIL and the high power laser LASERIX. We will give a status report of the preliminary work on the facility and the status of the two machines. We will also present the results of simulations showing the expected performances of the facility.

Simulations of the Acceleration of Externally Injected Electrons in a Plasma Excited in the Linear Regime

We have investigated numerically the coupling between a 10 \si{MeV} electron bunch of high charge (\SI{> 100}{pc}) with a laser generated accelerating plasma wave. Our results show that a high efficiency coupling can be achieved using a \SI{50}{TW}, \SI{100}{\micro \meter} wide laser beam, yielding accelerating field above \SI{1}{ GV/m}. We propose an experiment where these predictions could be tested.

Study of Short Bunches at the Free Electron Laser CLIO

CLIO is a Free Electron Laser based on a thermionic electron gun. In its normal operating mode it delivers electron 8 pulses but studies are ongoing to shorten the pulses to about 1 ps. We report on simulations showing how the pulse can be shortened and the expected signal yield from several bunch length diagnostics (Coherent Transition Radiation, Coherent Smith Purcell Radiation).

Comparison of Coherent Smith-Purcell radiation and Coherent Transition Radiation

Smith-Purcell radiation and Transition Radiation are two radiative phenomenon that occur in charged particles accelerators. For both the emission can be significantly enhanced with sufficiently short pulses and both can be used to measure the form factor of the pulse. We compare the yield of these phenomenon in different configurations and look at their application as bunch length monitors, including background filtering and rejection. We apply these calculations to the specific case of the CLIO Free Electron laser.

Study of Phase Reconstruction Techniques applied to Smith-Purcell Radiation Measurements

Measurements of coherent radiation at accelerators typically give the absolute value of the beam profile Fourier transform but not its phase. Phase reconstruction techniques such as Hilbert transform or Kramers Kronig reconstruction are used to recover such phase. We report a study of the performances of these methods and how to optimize the reconstructed profiles.

Resolution of Longitudinal Profile Measures using Coherent Smith-Purcell Radiation with the Number of Gratings and the Number of Pulses Used

The E-203 collaboration is testing a device on FACET at SLAC to measure the longitudinal profile of electron bunches using Smith-Purcell radiation. At FACET the electron bunches have an energy of 20~GeV and a duration of a few hundred femtoseconds. Smith-Purcell radiation is emitted when a charged particle passes close to the surface of a metallic grating. We have studied the stability of the measurement from pulse to pulse and the resolution of the measure depending on the number of gratings used.

On the suitability of longitudinal profile measurements using Coherent Smith-Purcell radiation for high current proton beams

The use of Smith-Purcell radiation to measure electrons longitudinal profiles has been demonstrated at several facilities in the picosecond and sub-picosecond range. There is a strong interest for the development of non intercepting longitudinal profile diagnostics for high current proton beams. We present here results of simulations on the expected yield of longitudinal profile monitors using Smith-Purcell radiation for such proton beams.

High flux polarized gamma rays production: first measurements with a four-mirror cavity at the ATF

The next generation of e+/e- colliders will require a very intense flux of gamma rays to allow high current polarized positrons to be produced. This can be achieved by converting polarized high energy photons in polarized pairs into a target. In that context, an optical system consisting of a laser and a four-mirror passive Fabry-Perot cavity has recently been installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK to produce a high flux of polarized gamma rays by inverse Compton scattering. In this contribution, we describe the experimental system and present preliminary results. An ultra-stable four-mirror non planar geometry has been implemented to ensure the polarization of the gamma rays produced. A fiber amplifier is used to inject about 10W in the high finesse cavity with a gain of 1000. A digital feedback system is used to keep the cavity at the length required for the optimal power enhancement. Preliminary measurements show that a flux of about $4\times10^6 γ$/s with an average energy of about 24 MeV was generated. Several upgrades currently in progress are also described.

Numerical Analysis of Space Charge Effects in Electron Bunches at Laser-Driven Plasma Accelerators

Laser-driven Plasma Accelerators (LPA) have successfully generated high energy, high charge electron bunches which can reach many kA peak current, over short distances. Space charge issues, even in transport lines as simple as a drift section, have to be carefully taken into account since they can degrade the beam quality, preventing any further application of such electron beams. We analyse the space charge effects within an electron bunch with numerical simulations in order to assess their effect on the beam. We use LPA beam parameters published in previous experimental studies. These studies can give an indication of the working point where space charge can dominate the beam dynamics and has to be taken into account in the application of such beams.

Single shot emittance measurement using Optical Transition Radiation

We describe a method that uses Optical Transition Radiation (OTR) screens to measure in a single shot the emittance of an electron beam with an energy greater than 100 MeV. Our setup consists of 4 OTR screens located near a beam waist. A fit of the 4 profiles allows the reconstruction of the Twiss parameters and hence a calculation of the beam emittance. This layout has been simulated using Mathematica to study its sensitivity to errors and using Geant4 to include effects due to the scattering of the electrons in the screens. Some assumptions made in this document are conservative to allow for unexpected experimental issues.

Longitudinal bunch profile diagnostics in the 50fs range using coherent Smith-Purcell radiation

We have considered the possibility of using coherent Smith-Purcell radiation for the single-shot determination of the longitudinal profile of 50 fs (FWHM) long electron bunches. This length is typical for the bunches currently produced by Laser Wakefield Acceleration and is at the limit of what is achievable by alternative techniques, such as Electro-Optic sampling. It is concluded that there are no obstacles, either theoretical or experimental, in the implementation of this technique. A set of three gratings, with periods of 15, 85 and 500 micrometres, will produce detectable energy in the wavelength region 10-1000 micrometres, which should be adequate for the reconstruction of the bunch shape by the Kramers-Kronig technique. For bunch charges of 109 electrons, or more, the radiated energy can be detected by room temperature pyroelectric detectors. The limits of possible extension of the technique to even shorter lengths are also considered.

For distinguishing the energy resolution and an optimal experimental setup numerical simulation, based on the measured magnetic field, have been performed.

Studies of beam offset due to beam-beam interactions at a warm linear collider

At a warm linear collider the short time interval at which bunches will pass near each other in the interaction region may lead to significant alteration of the bunches positions. In this paper we quantify the intensity of this effect and show that it can be addressed by a fast intra-pulse feedback system.

Higgs pair production at a linear e+e- collider in models with large extra dimensions

In this paper, we will derive the cross section formula for the Higgs pair production at a linear $e^+e^-$ collider in models with large extra dimensions and study the feasibility of its measurement through realistic Monte Carlo simulations. Since the process has essentially no Standard Model background, once produced, it will provide us with a very clean signature of physics beyond the Standard Model. Moreover, since the final state particles are spinless, the spin 2 of the intermediate virtual KK gravitons has to be conserved by the orbital angular momentum of the Higgs pair. This results in a very characteristic angular distribution of the final states. Taking into account finite detector acceptance and resolutions as well as initial state radiation and beamstrahlung, we demonstrate in this paper that, given a sufficiently high center of mass energy, the angular distribution of the Higgs pair is indeed measurable at the linear collider and will allow us to prove the spin 2 nature of the KK gravitons exchanged in the s-channel.
