Kondo Screening Cloud and Charge Quantization in Mesoscopic Devices

We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L.

Kondo screening cloud and the charge staircase in one-dimensional mesoscopic devices

We propose that the finite size of the Kondo screening cloud, xi_K, can be probed by measuring the charge quantization in a one-dimensional system coupled to a small quantum dot. When the chemical potential, mu in the system is varied at zero temperature, one should observe charge steps whose locations are at values of mu that are controlled by the Kondo effect when the system size L is comparable to xi_K. We show that, if the standard Kondo model is used, the ratio between the widths of the Coulomb blockade valleys with odd or even number of electrons is a universal scaling function of xi_K/L. If we take into account electron-electron interactions in a single-channel wire, this ratio also depends on the parameters of the effective Luttinger model; in addition, the scaling is weakly violated by a marginal bulk interaction. For the geometry of a quantum dot embedded in a ring, we show that the dependence of the charge steps on a magnetic flux through the ring is controlled by the size of the Kondo screening cloud.

Kondo Effect in Spin Chains

The free electron Kondo problem can be described by a one-dimensional (1D) model because only the s-wave part of the electronic wave-function is affected by the Kondo coupling. Since only the spin degrees of freedom are involved in the Kondo interaction, and due to spin-charge separation in 1D, the universal low energy long distance physics of the Kondo model also arises when a magnetic impurity is coupled to the end of a gap-less antiferromagnetic J_1-J_2 spin-1/2 chain, where J_1(J_2) is the (next-)nearest neighbor coupling. Experimental realizations of such spin chain models are possible and using various analytical and numerical techniques, we present a detailed and quantitative comparison between the usual free electron Kondo model and such spin chain versions of the Kondo problem. For the gap-less J_1-J_2 spin chain two cases are studied, with zero next nearest neighbor coupling, J_2=0, and with a critical second neighbor coupling, J_2=J_2c. We first focus on the spin chain impurity model at J_2c~0.2412 where a bulk marginal coupling present in the spin chain model for J_2<J_2c vanishes. At J_2c, the usual Kondo physics is recovered in the spin chain model in the low energy regime. We then analyze the nearest-neighbor model (J_2=0) where a new kind of Kondo effect occurs due to the presence of the bulk marginal coupling. This marginal coupling leads to a slower variation of the Kondo temperature T_K with the bare Kondo coupling. In the exact Bethe ansatz solution of this spin chain impurity model (J_2=0) Frahm and Zvyagin noted this relation as well as the connection to the Kondo problem. Here, we provide further evidence for the connection to Kondo physics and present low temperature QMC results for the impurity susceptibility that further support this connection.

Correlation amplitude and entanglement entropy in random spin chains

Using strong-disorder renormalization group, numerical exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo methods, we revisit the random antiferromagnetic XXZ spin-1/2 chain focusing on the long-length and ground-state behavior of the average time-independent spin-spin correlation function C(l)=\upsilon l^{-η}. In addition to the well-known universal (disorder-independent) power-law exponent η=2, we find interesting universal features displayed by the prefactor \upsilon=\upsilon_o/3, if l is odd, and \upsilon=\upsilon_e/3, otherwise. Although \upsilon_o and \upsilon_e are nonuniversal (disorder dependent) and distinct in magnitude, the combination \upsilon_o + \upsilon_e = -1/4 is universal if C is computed along the symmetric (longitudinal) axis. The origin of the nonuniversalities of the prefactors is discussed in the renormalization-group framework where a solvable toy model is considered. Moreover, we relate the average correlation function with the average entanglement entropy, whose amplitude has been recently shown to be universal. The nonuniversalities of the prefactors are shown to contribute only to surface terms of the entropy. Finally, we discuss the experimental relevance of our results by computing the structure factor whose scaling properties, interestingly, depend on the correlation prefactors.

Valence Bond Entanglement Entropy

We introduce for SU(2) quantum spin systems the Valence Bond Entanglement Entropy as a counting of valence bond spin singlets shared by two subsystems. For a large class of antiferromagnetic systems, it can be calculated in all dimensions with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the valence bond basis. We show numerically that this quantity displays all features of the von Neumann entanglement entropy for several one-dimensional systems. For two-dimensional Heisenberg models, we find a strict area law for a Valence Bond Solid state and multiplicative logarithmic corrections for the Neel phase.

Quantum and thermal transitions out of the supersolid phase of a 2D quantum antiferromagnet

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of a field-induced supersolid phase in a 2D quantum antiferromagnet model. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, a very rich phase diagram is mapped out in the temperature - magnetic field plane, with an extended supersolid region where a diagonal (solid) order coexists with a finite XY spin stiffness (superfluid). The various quantum and thermal transitions out of the supersolid state are characterized. Experimental consequences in the context of field-induced magnetization plateau materials are briefly discussed.

Quantum Impurity Entanglement

Entanglement in J_1-J_2, S=1/2 quantum spin chains with an impurity is studied using analytic methods as well as large scale numerical density matrix renormalization group methods. The entanglement is investigated in terms of the von Neumann entropy, S=-Tr rho_A log rho_A, for a sub-system A of size r of the chain. The impurity contribution to the uniform part of the entanglement entropy, S_{imp}, is defined and analyzed in detail in both the gapless, J_2 <= J_2^c, as well as the dimerized phase, J_2>J_2^c, of the model. This quantum impurity model is in the universality class of the single channel Kondo model and it is shown that in a quite universal way the presence of the impurity in the gapless phase, J_2 <= J_2^c, gives rise to a large length scale, xi_K, associated with the screening of the impurity, the size of the Kondo screening cloud. The universality of Kondo physics then implies scaling of the form S_{imp}(r/xi_K,r/R) for a system of size R. Numerical results are presented clearly demonstrating this scaling. At the critical point, J_2^c, an analytic Fermi liquid picture is developed and analytic results are obtained both at T=0 and T>0. In the dimerized phase an appealing picure of the entanglement is developed in terms of a thin soliton (TS) ansatz and the notions of impurity valence bonds (IVB) and single particle entanglement (SPE) are introduced. The TS-ansatz permits a variational calculation of the complete entanglement in the dimerized phase that appears to be exact in the thermodynamic limit at the Majumdar-Ghosh point, J_2=J_1/2, and surprisingly precise even close to the critical point J_2^c. In appendices the relation between the finite temperature entanglement entropy, S(T), and the thermal entropy, S_{th}(T), is discussed and and calculated at the MG-point using the TS-ansatz.

Quantum spin glass and the dipolar interaction

Systems in which the dipolar energy dominates the magnetic interaction, and the crystal field generates strong anisotropy favoring the longitudinal interaction terms, are considered. Such systems in external magnetic field are expected to be a good experimental realization of the transverse field Ising model. With random interactions this model yields a spin glass to paramagnet phase transition as function of the transverse field. Here we show that the off-diagonal dipolar interaction, although effectively reduced, destroys the spin glass order at any finite transverse field. Moreover, the resulting correlation length is shown to be small near the crossover to the paramagnetic phase, in agreement with the behavior of the nonlinear susceptibility in the experiments on $\LHx$. Thus, we argue that the in these experiments a cross-over to the paramagnetic phase, and not quantum criticality, was observed.

Impurity Entanglement Entropy and the Kondo Screening Cloud

The screening of an impurity spin by conduction electrons is associated with the formation of a large Kondo screening cloud, of size xi_K. We study the quantum entanglement between a region of size r surrounding the impurity and the rest of the sample, (of total size R) using Density Matrix Renormalization Group and analytic methods. The corresponding "impurity entanglement entropy", S_{imp}, is shown to be a universal scaling function of r/xi_K and r/R. We calculate this universal function using Fermi liquid theory in the regime xi_K << r.

Strong disorder renormalization group study of S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet layers/bilayers with bond randomness, site dilution and dimer dilution

Using a numerical implementation of strong disorder renormalization group, we study the low-energy, long-distance properties of layers and bilayers of $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets with different type of disorder: bond randomness, site and dimer dilution. Generally the systems exhibit an ordered and a disordered phase separated by a phase boundary on which the static critical exponents appear to be independent of bond randomness in the strong disorder regime, while the dynamical exponent is a continuous function of the bond disorder strength. The low-energy fixed points of the off-critical phases are affected by the actual form of the disorder, and the disorder induced dynamical exponent depends on the disorder strength. As the strength of bond disorder is increased, there is a set of crossovers in the properties of the low-energy singularities. For weak disorder quantum fluctuations play the dominant role. For intermediate disorder non-localized disorder fluctuations are relevant, which become localized for even stronger bond disorder. We also present some quantum Monte Carlo simulations results to support the strong disorder renormalization approach.

Boundary effects in the critical scaling of entanglement entropy in 1D systems

We present exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group results for the entanglement entropy of critical spin-1/2 XXZ chains. We find that open boundary conditions induce an alternating term in both the energy density and the entanglement entropy which are approximately proportional, decaying away from the boundary with a power-law. The power varies with anisotropy along the XXZ critical line and is corrected by a logarithmic factor, which we calculate analytically, at the isotropic point. A heuristic resonating valence bond explanation is suggested.

Random-exchange quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice

The ground state properties of random-exchange spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the square lattice are investigated using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, exact numerical diagonalizations, and spin wave calculations. Whereas arbirarily weak disorder has a drastic effect on 1d Heisenberg AFM, we find that in two dimensions the characteristics of the ground state like long-range order is robust even against strong disorder. While the antiferromagnetic order parameter and the spin stiffness are exponentially reduced for singular exchange distributions, they vanish only in the limit of infinite randomness.

Scaling of Entanglement Entropy in the Random Singlet Phase

We present numerical evidences for the logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy in critical random spin chains. Very large scale exact diagonalizations performed at the critical XX point up to L=2000 spins 1/2 lead to a perfect agreement with recent real-space renormalization-group predictions of Refael and Moore [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 260602 (2004)] for the logarithmic scaling of the entanglement entropy in the Random Singlet Phase with an effective central charge ${\tilde{c}}=c\times \ln 2$. Moreover we provide the first visual proof of the existence the Random Singlet Phase thanks to the quantum entanglement concept.

Critical phenomena and quantum phase transition in long range Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains

Antiferromagnetic Hamiltonians with short-range, non-frustrating interactions are well-known to exhibit long range magnetic order in dimensions, $d\geq 2$ but exhibit only quasi long range order, with power law decay of correlations, in d=1 (for half-integer spin). On the other hand, non-frustrating long range interactions can induce long range order in d=1. We study Hamiltonians in which the long range interactions have an adjustable amplitude lambda, as well as an adjustable power-law $1/|x|^α$, using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and analytic methods: spin-wave, large-N non-linear sigma model, and renormalization group methods. We map out the phase diagram in the lambda-alpha plane and study the nature of the critical line separating the phases with long range and quasi long range order. We find that this corresponds to a novel line of critical points with continuously varying critical exponents and a dynamical exponent, z<1.

Confinement and critical regime in doped frustrated quasi-one dimensional magnets

Ground state and finite temperature properties of a system of coupled frustrated and/or dimerized spin-1/2 chains modeling e.g. the CuGeO$_3$ compound are reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the investigation of the role of impurity doping. A c hain-mean field computation combining exact diagonalisations of the chain hamiltonians together with a mean field treatment of the weak interchain couplings is performed in order to map the microscopic model onto a low-energy effective model. The latter descr ibes a 2-dimensional system of effective spin-1/2 local moments interacting by spacially anisotropic long range spin exchange interactions. An extensive study of this effective model is performed by Stocastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo for a wide range of temperatures and impurity concentrations. Interesting scaling behaviors of the uniform and staggered spin susceptibilities (above a small ordering Neel temperature due to a residual 3D coupling) can be interpreted in terms of the formation of large clusters of correlated spins carrying a finite magnetization. Such results are reproduced satisfactorily by a new Real Space RG enabling to deal with long range interactions in two-dimensions

Critical properties of doped coupled spin-Peierls chains

Using numerical Real Space Renormalisation Group methods as well as Stochastic Series Expansions Quantum Monte Carlo simulations a generic model of diluted spin-1/2 impurities interacting at long distances is investigated. Such a model gives a generic description of coupled dimerized spin-Peierls chains doped with non-magnetic impurities at temperatures lower than the spin gap. A scaling regime with temperature power-law behaviors in several quantities like the uniform or staggered susceptibilities is identified and interpreted in terms of large clusters of correlated spins.

Simulations of pure and doped low-dimensional spin-1/2 gapped systems

Low dimensional spin-1/2 systems with antiferromagnetic interactions display very innovative features, driven by strong quantum fluctuations. In particular, geometrical effects or competing magnetic interactions can give rise to the formation of a spin gap between the singlet ground state and the first excited triplet state. In this chapter, we focus on the numerical investigation of such systems by Exact Diagonalisation methods and some extensions of it including a simultaneous mean-field treatment of some perturbative couplings. After a presentation of the Lanczos algorithm and a description of the space group symmetries, we give a short review on some pure low-dimensionnal frustrated spin gapped systems. In particular, we outline the role of the magnetic frustration in the formation of disordered phase. A large part is also devoted to frustrated Spin-Peierls systems for which the role of interchain couplings as well as impurity doping effects has been studied numerically.

Magnetic ordering in a doped frustrated spin-Peierls system

Based on a model of a quasi-one dimensional spin-Peierls system doped with non-magnetic impurities, an effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian of randomly distributed S=1/2 spins interacting via long-range pair-wise interaction is studied using a stochastic series expansion quantum Monte Carlo method. The susceptibility shows Curie-like behavior at the lowest temperatures reached although the staggered magnetisation is found to be finite for $T\to 0$. The doping dependance of the corresponding three-dimensional Neel temperature is also computed.
