Scaling of the spin stiffness in random spin-1/2 chains : Crossover from pure-metallic behaviour to random singlet-localized regime

In this paper we study the localization transition induced by the disorder in random antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chains. The results of numerical large scale computations are presented for the XX model using its free fermions representation. The scaling behavior of the spin stiffness is investigated for various disorder strengths. The disorder dependence of the localization length is studied and a comparison between numerical results and bosonization arguments is presented. A non trivial connection between localization effects and the crossover from the pure XX fixed point to the infinite randomness fixed point is pointed out.

Magnetic ordering in doped coupled frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains with 4-spin exchange

The role of various magnetic inter-chain couplings has been investigated recently by numerical methods in doped frustrated quantum spin chains. A non-magnetic dopant introduced in a gapped spin chain releases a free spin-1/2 soliton. The formation of a local magnetic moment has been analyzed in term of soliton confinement. A four-spin coupling which might originate from cyclic exchange is shown to produce such a confinement. Dopants on different chains experience an effective space-extended non-frustrating pairwise spin interaction. This effective interaction between impurity-spins is long-ranged and therefore is expected to play a crucial role in the mecanism of antiferromagnetic (AF) long-range ordering (LRO) observed in spin-Peierls (SP) compounds such as CuGeO$_3$ doped with non-magnetic impurities.

A non-magnetic dopant introduced in a gapped spin chain releases a free spin-1/2 soliton. The formation of a local magnetic moment is analyzed in term of soliton confinement. A four-spin coupling which might originate from cyclic exchange is shown to produce such a confinement in contrast to transverse magnetic exchange. Dopants on different chains experience an effective space-extended non-frustrating pairwise spin interaction.

Finite Size Scaling of the Spin Stiffness of the Antiferromagnetic S=1/2 XXZ chain

We study the finite size scaling of the spin stiffness for the one-dimensional s=1/2 quantum antiferromagnet as a function of the anisotropy parameter Delta.Previous Bethe ansatz results allow a determination of the stiffness in the thermodynamic limit. The Bethe ansatz equations for finite systems are solvable even in the presence of twisted boundary conditions, a fact we exploit to determine the stiffness exactly for finite systems allowing for a complete determination of the finite size corrections. Relating the stiffness to thermodynamic quantities we calculate the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and its finite size corrections at T=0. A Luttinger liquid approach is used to study the finite size corrections using renormalization group techniques and the results are compared to the numerically exact results obtained using the Bethe ansatz equations. Both irrelevant and marginally irrelevant cases are considered.
