Derivation of the stochastic Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions from the WASEP

We consider the weakly asymmetric simple exclusion process on the discrete space $\{1,...,n-1\}$, in contact with stochastic reservoirs, both with density $ρ\in{(0,1)}$ at the extremity points, and starting from the invariant state, namely the Bernoulli product measure of parameter $ρ$. Under time diffusive scaling $tn^2$ and for $ρ=\frac12$, when the asymmetry parameter is taken of order $1/ \sqrt n$, we prove that the density fluctuations at stationarity are macroscopically governed by the energy solution of the stochastic Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, which is shown to be unique and different from the Cole-Hopf solution.

A superhedging approach to stochastic integration

Using Vovk's outer measure, which corresponds to a minimal superhedging price, the existence of quadratic variation is shown for "typical price paths" in the space of càdlàg functions possessing a mild restriction on the jumps directed downwards. In particular, this result includes the existence of quadratic variation of "typical price paths" in the space of non-negative càdlàg paths and implies the existence of quadratic variation in the sense of Föllmer quasi surely under all martingale measures. Based on the robust existence of the quadratic variation, a model-free Itô integration is developed.

Paracontrolled distributions and singular PDEs

We introduce an approach to study certain singular PDEs which is based on techniques from paradifferential calculus and on ideas from the theory of controlled rough paths. We illustrate its applicability on some model problems like differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion, a fractional Burgers type SPDE driven by space-time white noise, and a non-linear version of the parabolic Anderson model with a white noise potential.

An introduction to singular SPDEs

We review recent results on the analysis of singular stochastic partial differential equations in the language of paracontrolled distributions.

Probabilistic approach to the stochastic Burgers equation

We review the formulation of the stochastic Burgers equation as a martingale problem. One way of understanding the difficulty in making sense of the equation is to note that it is a stochastic PDE with distributional drift, so we first review how to construct finite-dimensional diffusions with distributional drift. We then present the uniqueness result for the stationary martingale problem of [Gubinelli, Perkowski 2016], but we mainly emphasize the heuristic derivation and also we include a (very simple) extension of [Gubinelli, Perkowski 2016] to a non-stationary regime.

An invariance principle for the two-dimensional parabolic Anderson model with small potential

We prove an invariance principle for the two-dimensional lattice parabolic Anderson model with small potential. As applications we deduce a Donsker type convergence result for a discrete random polymer measure, as well as a universality result for the spectrum of discrete random Schrödinger operators on large boxes with small potentials. Our proof is based on paracontrolled distributions and some basic results for multiple stochastic integrals of discrete martingales.

Pathwise super-replication via Vovk's outer measure

Since Hobson's seminal paper [D. Hobson: Robust hedging of the lookback option. In: Finance Stoch. (1998)] the connection between model-independent pricing and the Skorokhod embedding problem has been a driving force in robust finance. We establish a general pricing-hedging duality for financial derivatives which are susceptible to the Skorokhod approach. Using Vovk's approach to mathematical finance we derive a model-independent super-replication theorem in continuous time, given information on finitely many marginals. Our result covers a broad range of exotic derivatives, including lookback options, discretely monitored Asian options, and options on realized variance.

Pathwise stochastic integrals for model free finance

We present two different approaches to stochastic integration in frictionless model free financial mathematics. The first one is in the spirit of Itô's integral and based on a certain topology which is induced by the outer measure corresponding to the minimal superhedging price. The second one is based on the controlled rough path integral. We prove that every "typical price path" has a naturally associated Itô rough path, and justify the application of the controlled rough path integral in finance by showing that it is the limit of non-anticipating Riemann sums, a new result in itself. Compared to the first approach, rough paths have the disadvantage of severely restricting the space of integrands, but the advantage of being a Banach space theory. Both approaches are based entirely on financial arguments and do not require any probabilistic structure.

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation as scaling limit of weakly asymmetric interacting Brownian motions

We consider a system of infinitely many interacting Brownian motions that models the height of a one-dimensional interface between two bulk phases. We prove that the large scale fluctuations of the system are well approximated by the solution to the KPZ equation provided the microscopic interaction is weakly asymmetric. The proof is based on the martingale solutions of Goncalves and Jara and the corresponding uniqueness result of Gubinelli and Perkowski.

KPZ reloaded

We analyze the one-dimensional periodic Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the language of paracontrolled distributions, giving an alternative viewpoint on the seminal results of Hairer. Apart from deriving a basic existence and uniqueness result for paracontrolled solutions to the KPZ equation we perform a thorough study of some related problems. We rigorously prove the links between KPZ equation, stochastic Burgers equation, and (linear) stochastic heat equation and also the existence of solutions starting from quite irregular initial conditions. We also build a partial link between energy solutions as introduced by Goncalves and Jara and paracontrolled solutions. Interpreting the KPZ equation as the value function of an optimal control problem, we give a pathwise proof for the global existence of solutions and thus for the strict positivity of solutions to the stochastic heat equation. Moreover, we study Sasamoto-Spohn type discretizations of the stochastic Burgers equation and show that their limit solves the continuous Burgers equation possibly with an additional linear transport term. As an application, we give a proof of the invariance of the white noise for the stochastic Burgers equation which does not rely on the Cole-Hopf transform.

Local times for typical price paths and pathwise Tanaka formulas

Following a hedging based approach to model free financial mathematics, we prove that it should be possible to make an arbitrarily large profit by investing in those one-dimensional paths which do not possess local times. The local time is constructed from discrete approximations, and it is shown that it is $α$-Hölder continuous for all $α<1/2$. Additionally, we provide various generalizations of Föllmer's pathwise Itô formula.

A Fourier approach to pathwise stochastic integration

We develop a Fourier approach to rough path integration, based on the series decomposition of continuous functions in terms of Schauder functions. Our approach is rather elementary, the main ingredient being a simple commutator estimate, and it leads to recursive algorithms for the calculation of pathwise stochastic integrals, both of Itô and of Stratonovich type. We apply it to solve stochastic differential equations in a pathwise manner.

Dimensional reduction in nonlinear filtering: A homogenization approach

We propose a homogenized filter for multiscale signals, which allows us to reduce the dimension of the system. We prove that the nonlinear filter converges to our homogenized filter with rate $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$. This is achieved by a suitable asymptotic expansion of the dual of the Zakai equation, and by probabilistically representing the correction terms with the help of BDSDEs.

The Existence of Dominating Local Martingale Measures

We prove that, for locally bounded processes, absence of arbitrage opportunities of the first kind is equivalent to the existence of a dominating local martingale measure. This is related to and motivated by results from the theory of filtration enlargements.

Conditioned Martingales

It is well known that upward conditioned Brownian motion is a three-dimensional Bessel process, and that a downward conditioned Bessel process is a Brownian motion. We give a simple proof for this result, which generalizes to any continuous local martingale and clarifies the role of finite versus infinite time in this setting. As a consequence, we can describe the law of regular diffusions that are conditioned upward or downward.

Particle filtering in high-dimensional chaotic systems

We present an efficient particle filtering algorithm for multiscale systems, that is adapted for simple atmospheric dynamics models which are inherently chaotic. Particle filters represent the posterior conditional distribution of the state variables by a collection of particles, which evolves and adapts recursively as new information becomes available. The difference between the estimated state and the true state of the system constitutes the error in specifying or forecasting the state, which is amplified in chaotic systems that have a number of positive Lyapunov exponents. The purpose of the present paper is to show that the homogenization method developed in Imkeller et al. (2011), which is applicable to high dimensional multi-scale filtering problems, along with important sampling and control methods can be used as a basic and flexible tool for the construction of the proposal density inherent in particle filtering. Finally, we apply the general homogenized particle filtering algorithm developed here to the Lorenz'96 atmospheric model that mimics mid-latitude atmospheric dynamics with microscopic convective processes.
