Conformal Anomaly for Amplitudes in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

Scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional N=6 Chern-Simons theory are shown to be non-invariant with respect to the free representation of the osp(6|4) symmetry generators. At tree and one-loop level these "anomalous" terms occur only for non-generic, singular configurations of the external momenta and can be used to determine the form of the amplitudes. In particular we show that the symmetries predict that the one-loop six-point amplitude is non-vanishing and confirm this by means of an explicit calculation using generalized unitarity methods. We comment on the implications of this finding for any putative Wilson loop/amplitude duality in N=6 Chern-Simons theory.

Boosting Nearest-Neighbour to Long-Range Integrable Spin Chains

We present an integrability-preserving recursion relation for the explicit construction of long-range spin chain Hamiltonians. These chains are generalizations of the Haldane-Shastry and Inozemtsev models and they play an important role in recent advances in string/gauge duality. The method is based on arbitrary nearest-neighbour integrable spin chains and it sheds light on the moduli space of deformation parameters. We also derive the closed chain asymptotic Bethe equations.

A Quantum Affine Algebra for the Deformed Hubbard Chain

The integrable structure of the one-dimensional Hubbard model is based on Shastry's R-matrix and the Yangian of a centrally extended sl(2|2) superalgebra. Alcaraz and Bariev have shown that the model admits an integrable deformation whose R-matrix has recently been found. This R-matrix is of trigonometric type and here we derive its underlying exceptional quantum affine algebra. We also show how the algebra reduces to the above mentioned Yangian and to the conventional quantum affine sl(2|2) algebra in two special limits.

Construction of Lax Connections by Exponentiation

We propose a method for constructing the Lax connection of two-dimensional relativistic integrable sigma models on coset spaces by means of exponentiation of a suitable operator. We derive a simple quadratic relation that this operator must satisfy for an entire one-parameter family of connections to be flat.

Null Polygonal Wilson Loops in Full N=4 Superspace

We compute the one-loop expectation value of light-like polygonal Wilson loops in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory in full superspace. When projecting to chiral superspace we recover the known results for tree-level next-to-maximally-helicity-violating (NMHV) scattering amplitude. The one-loop MHV amplitude is also included in our result but there are additional terms which do not immediately correspond to scattering amplitudes. We finally discuss different regularizations and their Yangian anomalies.

On the Geometry of Null Polygons in Full N=4 Superspace

We discuss various formulations of null polygons in full, non-chiral N=4 superspace in terms of spacetime, spinor and twistor variables. We also note that null polygons are necessarily fat along fermionic directions, a curious fact which is compensated by suitable equivalence relations in physical theories on this superspace.

Exact Superconformal and Yangian Symmetry of Scattering Amplitudes

We review recent progress in the understanding of symmetries for scattering amplitudes in N=4 superconformal Yang-Mills theory. It is summarized how the superficial breaking of superconformal symmetry by collinear anomalies and the renormalization process can be cured at tree and loop level. This is achieved by correcting the representation of the superconformal group on amplitudes. Moreover, we comment on the Yangian symmetry of scattering amplitudes and how it inherits these correction terms from the ordinary Lie algebra symmetry. Invariants under this algebra and their relation to the Grassmannian generating function for scattering amplitudes are discussed. Finally, parallel developments in N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory are summarized. This article is an invited review for a special issue of Journal of Physics A devoted to Scattering Amplitudes in Gauge Theories.

On Yangian Symmetry in Planar N=4 SYM

Planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory appears to be perturbatively integrable. This work reviews integrability in terms of a Yangian algebra and compares the application to the problems of anomalous dimensions and scattering amplitudes.

The Classical Trigonometric r-Matrix for the Quantum-Deformed Hubbard Chain

The one-dimensional Hubbard model is an exceptional integrable spin chain which is apparently based on a deformation of the Yangian for the superalgebra gl(2|2). Here we investigate the quantum-deformation of the Hubbard model in the classical limit. This leads to a novel classical r-matrix of trigonometric kind. We derive the corresponding one-parameter family of Lie bialgebras as a deformation of the affine gl(2|2) Kac-Moody superalgebra. In particular, we discuss the affine extension as well as discrete symmetries, and we scan for simpler limiting cases, such as the rational r-matrix for the undeformed Hubbard model.

Review of AdS/CFT Integrability, Chapter VI.1: Superconformal Symmetry

Aspects of the D=4, N=4 superconformal symmetry relevant to the AdS/CFT duality and integrability are reviewed. These include the Lie superalgebra psu(2,2|4), its representations, conformal transformations and correlation functions in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory as well as an illustration of the AdS5xS5 superspace on which the dual string theory is formulated.

The Complete One-Loop Dilatation Operator of N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory

We continue the analysis of hep-th/0303060 in the one-loop sector and present the complete psu(2,2|4) dilatation operator of N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory. This operator generates the matrix of one-loop anomalous dimensions for all local operators in the theory. Using an oscillator representation we show how to apply the dilatation generator to a generic state. By way of example, we determine the planar anomalous dimensions of all operators up to and including dimension 5.5, where we also find some evidence for integrability. Finally, we investigate a number of subsectors of N=4 SYM in which the dilatation operator simplifies. Among these we find the previously considered so(6) and su(2) subsectors, a su(2|4) subsector isomorphic to the BMN matrix model at one-loop, a u(2|3) supersymmetric subsector of nearly eighth-BPS states and, last but not least, a non-compact sl(2) subsector whose dilatation operator lifts uniquely to the full theory.

E7(7) constraints on counterterms in N=8 supergravity

We prove by explicit computation that 6-point matrix elements of D^4R^4 and D^6R^4 in N=8 supergravity have non-vanishing single-soft scalar limits, and therefore these operators violate the continuous E7(7) symmetry. The soft limits precisely match automorphism constraints. Together with previous results for R^4, this provides a direct proof that no E7(7)-invariant candidate counterterm exists below 7-loop order. At 7-loops, we characterize the infinite tower of independent supersymmetric operators D^4R^6, R^8, phi^2 R^8,... with n>4 fields and prove that they all violate E7(7) symmetry. This means that the 4-graviton amplitude determines whether or not the theory is finite at 7-loop order. We show that the corresponding candidate counterterm D^8R^4 has a non-linear supersymmetrization such that its single- and double-soft scalar limits are compatible with E7(7) up to and including 6-points. At loop orders 7, 8, 9 we provide an exhaustive account of all independent candidate counterterms with up to 16, 14, 12 fields, respectively, together with their potential single-soft scalar limits.

One-Loop Superconformal and Yangian Symmetries of Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills

Recently it has been argued that tree-level scattering amplitudes in N=4 Yang-Mills theory are uniquely determined by a careful study of their superconformal and Yangian symmetries. However, at one-loop order these symmetries are known to become anomalous due to infrared divergences. We compute these one-loop anomalies for amplitudes defined through dimensional regularisation by studying the tree-level symmetry transformations of the unitarity branch cuts, keeping track of the crucial collinear terms arising from the holomorphic anomaly. We extract the superconformal anomalies and show that they may be cancelled through a universal one-loop deformation of the tree-level symmetry generators which involves only tree-level data. Specialising to the planar theory we also obtain the analogous deformation for the level-one Yangian generator of momentum. Explicit checks of our one-loop deformation are performed for MHV and the 6-point NMHV amplitudes.

Exacting N=4 Superconformal Symmetry

Tree level scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory are almost, but not exactly invariant under the free action of the N=4 superconformal algebra. What causes the non-invariance is the holomorphic anomaly at poles where external particles become collinear. In this paper we propose a deformation of the free superconformal representation by contributions which change the number of external legs. This modified classical representation not only makes tree amplitudes fully invariant, but it also leads to additional constraints from symmetry alone mediating between hitherto unrelated amplitudes. Moreover, in a constructive approach it appears to fully constrain all tree amplitudes when combined with dual superconformal alias Yangian symmetry.

Scattering in Mass-Deformed N>=4 Chern-Simons Models

We investigate the scattering matrix in mass-deformed N>=4 Chern-Simons models including as special cases the BLG and ABJM theories of multiple M2 branes. Curiously the structure of this scattering matrix in three spacetime dimensions is equivalent to (a) the two-dimensional worldsheet matrix found in the context of AdS/CFT integrability and (b) the R-matrix of the one-dimensional Hubbard model. The underlying reason is that all three models are based on an extension of the psu(2|2) superalgebra which constrains the matrix completely. We also compute scattering amplitudes in one-loop field theory and find perfect agreement with scattering unitarity.

The su(2|3) Undynamic Spin Chain

The integrable spin chain found in perturbative planar N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory is dynamic. Here we propose a reformulation which removes the dynamic effects in order to make the model more accessible to an algebraic treatment.
