The Galois theory of $G$-spectra and the Burnside ring

We prove that the Galois groupoid of the category of $G$-spectra for a finite group $G$ is algebraic, i.e. equivalent to the étale fundamental groupoid of the Burnside ring of $G$. We implement an algorithm that computes the latter from the table of marks of $G$, and provide numerous examples.

Separable commutative algebras in equivariant homotopy theory

Given a finite group $G$ and a commutative ring $G$-spectrum $R$, we study the separable commutative algebras in the category of compact $R$-modules. We isolate three conditions on the geometric fixed points of $R$ which ensure that every separable commutative algebra is standard, i.e. arises from a finite $G$-set. In particular we show that all separable commutative algebras in the categories of compact objects in $G$-spectra and in derived $G$-Mackey functors are standard provided that $G$ is a $p$-group. In these categories we also show that for a general finite group $G$, not all separable commutative algebras are standard. We finally discuss how the classification of separable commutative algebras in compact $G$-spectra varies if we require the existence of multiplicative norms. We show that if $G$ is solvable, then any separable commutative algebra therein that is normed is automatically standard. However, if $G$ is not solvable, we provide examples of separable commutative algebras that are normed but not standard.

Quillen stratification in equivariant homotopy theory

We prove a version of Quillen's stratification theorem in equivariant homotopy theory for a finite group $G$, generalizing the classical theorem in two directions. Firstly, we work with arbitrary commutative equivariant ring spectra as coefficients, and secondly, we categorify it to a result about equivariant modules. Our general stratification theorem is formulated in the language of equivariant tensor-triangular geometry, which we show to be tightly controlled by the non-equivariant tensor-triangular geometry of the geometric fixed points. We then apply our methods to the case of Borel-equivariant Lubin--Tate $E$-theory $\underline{E_n}$, for any finite height $n$ and any finite group $G$, where we obtain a sharper theorem in the form of cohomological stratification. In particular, this provides a computation of the Balmer spectrum as well as a cohomological parametrization of all localizing $\otimes$-ideals of the category of equivariant modules over $\underline{E_n}$, thereby establishing a finite height analogue of the work of Benson, Iyengar, and Krause in modular representation theory.

A symmetric monoidal fracture square

Given a symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ which is rigidly-compactly generated and a set of compact objects $\mathcal{K}$ of $\mathcal{C}$, one can form the subcategories of $\mathcal{K}$-complete and $\mathcal{K}$-local objects. The goal of this paper is to explain how to recover $\mathcal{C}$ from its $\mathcal{K}$-local and $\mathcal{K}$-complete subcategories while retaining the symmetric monoidal structure. Specializing to the case where $\mathcal{C}$ is the $\infty$-category of $G$-spectra for a finite group $G$, our result can be viewed as a symmetric monoidal variant of the isotropy separation decomposition, a version of which appeared previously in work of Krause.

Separable commutative algebras and Galois theory in stable homotopy theories

We relate two different proposals to extend the étale topology into homotopy theory, namely via the notion of finite cover introduced by Mathew and via the notion of separable commutative algebra introduced by Balmer. We show that finite covers are precisely those separable commutative algebras with underlying dualizable module, which have a locally constant and finite degree function. We then use Galois theory to classify separable commutative algebras in numerous categories of interest. Examples include the category of modules over a connective $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring $R$ which is either connective or even periodic with $π_0(R)$ regular Noetherian in which $2$ acts invertibly, the stable module category of a finite group of $p$-rank one and the derived category of a qcqs scheme.

Descent in tensor triangular geometry

We investigate to what extent we can descend the classification of localizing, smashing and thick ideals in a presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathscr{C}$ along a descendable commutative algebra $A$. We establish equalizer diagrams relating the lattices of localizing and smashing ideals of $\mathscr{C}$ to those of $\mathrm{Mod}_{A}(\mathscr{C})$ and $\mathrm{Mod}_{A\otimes A}(\mathscr{C})$. If $A$ is compact, we obtain a similar equalizer for the lattices of thick ideals which, via Stone duality, yields a coequalizer diagram of Balmer spectra in the category of spectral spaces. We then give conditions under which the telescope conjecture and stratification descend from $\mathrm{Mod}_{A}(\mathscr{C})$ to $\mathscr{C}$. The utility of these results is demonstrated in the case of faithful Galois extensions in tensor triangular geometry.

Descent and vanishing in chromatic algebraic $K$-theory via group actions

We prove some $K$-theoretic descent results for finite group actions on stable $\infty$-categories, including the $p$-group case of the Galois descent conjecture of Ausoni-Rognes. We also prove vanishing results in accordance with Ausoni-Rognes's redshift philosophy: in particular, we show that if $R$ is an $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring spectrum with $L_{T(n)}R=0$, then $L_{T(n+1)}K(R)=0$. Our key observation is that descent and vanishing are logically interrelated, permitting to establish them simultaneously by induction on the height.

On conjectures of Hovey--Strickland and Chai

We prove the height two case of a conjecture of Hovey and Strickland that provides a $K(n)$-local analogue of the Hopkins--Smith thick subcategory theorem. Our approach first reduces the general conjecture to a problem in arithmetic geometry posed by Chai. We then use the Gross--Hopkins period map to verify Chai's Hope at height two and all primes. Along the way, we show that the graded commutative ring of completed cooperations for Morava $E$-theory is coherent, and that every finitely generated Morava module can be realized by a $K(n)$-local spectrum as long as $2p-2>n^2+n$. Finally, we deduce consequences of our results for descent of Balmer spectra.

Rigidity in equivariant algebraic $K$-theory

If $(R,I)$ is a henselian pair with an action of a finite group $G$ and $n\ge 1$ is an integer coprime to $|G|$ and such that $n\cdot |G|\in R^*$, then the reduction map of mod-$n$ equivariant $K$-theory spectra \[ K^G(R)/n\stackrel{\simeq}{\longrightarrow} K^G(R/I)/n\] is an equivalence. We prove this by revisiting the recent proof of non-equivariant rigidity by Clausen, Mathew, and Morrow.

The Balmer spectrum of the equivariant homotopy category of a finite abelian group

For a finite abelian group $A$, we determine the Balmer spectrum of $\mathrm{Sp}_A^ω$, the compact objects in genuine $A$-spectra. This generalizes the case $A=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ due to Balmer and Sanders \cite{Balmer-Sanders}, by establishing (a corrected version of) their log$_p$-conjecture for abelian groups. We also work out the consequences for the chromatic type of fixed-points and establish a generalization of Kuhn's blue-shift theorem for Tate-constructions \cite{kuhn}.

Derived induction and restriction theory

Let $G$ be a finite group. To any family $\mathscr{F}$ of subgroups of $G$, we associate a thick $\otimes$-ideal $\mathscr{F}^{\mathrm{Nil}}$ of the category of $G$-spectra with the property that every $G$-spectrum in $\mathscr{F}^{\mathrm{Nil}}$ (which we call $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent) can be reconstructed from its underlying $H$-spectra as $H$ varies over $\mathscr{F}$. A similar result holds for calculating $G$-equivariant homotopy classes of maps into such spectra via an appropriate homotopy limit spectral sequence. In general, the condition $E\in \mathscr{F}^{\mathrm{Nil}}$ implies strong collapse results for this spectral sequence as well as its dual homotopy colimit spectral sequence. As applications, we obtain Artin and Brauer type induction theorems for $G$-equivariant $E$-homology and cohomology, and generalizations of Quillen's $\mathcal{F}_p$-isomorphism theorem when $E$ is a homotopy commutative $G$-ring spectrum. We show that the subcategory $\mathscr{F}^{\mathrm{Nil}}$ contains many $G$-spectra of interest for relatively small families $\mathscr{F}$. These include $G$-equivariant real and complex $K$-theory as well as the Borel-equivariant cohomology theories associated to complex oriented ring spectra, any $L_n$-local spectrum, the classical bordism theories, connective real $K$-theory, and any of the standard variants of topological modular forms. In each of these cases we identify the minimal family such that these results hold.

Descent in algebraic $K$-theory and a conjecture of Ausoni-Rognes

Let $A \to B$ be a $G$-Galois extension of rings, or more generally of $\mathbb{E}_\infty$-ring spectra in the sense of Rognes. A basic question in algebraic $K$-theory asks how close the map $K(A) \to K(B)^{hG}$ is to being an equivalence, i.e., how close algebraic $K$-theory is to satisfying Galois descent. An elementary argument with the transfer shows that this equivalence is true rationally in most cases of interest. Motivated by the classical descent theorem of Thomason, one also expects such a result after periodic localization. We formulate and prove a general result which enables one to promote rational descent statements as above into descent statements after periodic localization. This reduces the localized descent problem to establishing an elementary condition on $K_0(-)\otimes \mathbb{Q}$. As applications, we prove various descent results in the periodic localized $K$-theory, $TC$, $THH$, etc. of structured ring spectra, and verify several cases of a conjecture of Ausoni and Rognes.

Nilpotence and descent in equivariant stable homotopy theory

Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of subgroups of $G$. We introduce a class of $G$-equivariant spectra that we call $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent. This definition fits into the general theory of torsion, complete, and nilpotent objects in a symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category, with which we begin. We then develop some of the basic properties of $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent $G$-spectra, which are explored further in the sequel to this paper. In the rest of the paper, we prove several general structure theorems for $\infty$-categories of module spectra over objects such as equivariant real and complex $K$-theory and Borel-equivariant $MU$. Using these structure theorems and a technique with the flag variety dating back to Quillen, we then show that large classes of equivariant cohomology theories for which a type of complex-orientability holds are nilpotent for the family of abelian subgroups. In particular, we prove that equivariant real and complex $K$-theory, as well as the Borel-equivariant versions of complex-oriented theories, have this property.

On a nilpotence conjecture of J.P. May

We prove a conjecture of J.P. May concerning the nilpotence of elements in ring spectra with power operations, i.e., $H_\infty$-ring spectra. Using an explicit nilpotence bound on the torsion elements in $K(n)$-local $H_\infty$-algebras over $E_n$, we reduce the conjecture to the nilpotence theorem of Devinatz, Hopkins, and Smith. As corollaries we obtain nilpotence results in various bordism rings including $M\mathit{Spin}_*$ and $M\mathit{String}_*$, results about the behavior of the Adams spectral sequence for $E_\infty$-ring spectra, and the non-existence of $E_\infty$-ring structures on certain complex oriented ring spectra.

Existence and uniqueness of E-infinity structures on motivic K-theory spectra

We show that algebraic K-theory KGL, the motivic Adams summand ML and their connective covers acquire unique E-infinity structures refining naive multiplicative structures in the motivic stable homotopy category. The proofs combine Gamma-homology computations and work due to Robinson giving rise to motivic obstruction theory. As an application we employ a motivic to simplicial delooping argument to show a uniqueness result for E-infinity structures on the K-theory Nisnevich presheaf of spectra.

Strictly commutative realizations of diagrams over the Steenrod algebra and topological modular forms at the prime 2

Previous work constructed a generalized truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum of chromatic height 2 at the prime 2 as an E_infinity-ring spectrum, based on the study of elliptic curves with level-3 structure. We show that the natural map forgetting this level structure induces an E_infinity-ring map from the spectrum of topological modular forms to this truncated Brown-Peterson spectrum, and that this orientation fits into a diagram of E_infinity-ring spectra lifting a classical diagram of modules over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra. In an appendix we document how to organize Morava's forms of K-theory into a sheaf of E_infinity-ring spectra.

Commutativity conditions for truncated Brown-Peterson spectra of height 2

An algebraic criterion, in terms of closure under power operations, is determined for the existence and uniqueness of generalized trun- cated Brown-Peterson spectra of height 2 as E_\infty-ring spectra. The criterion is checked for an example at the prime 2 derived from the universal elliptic curve equipped with a level Γ_1(3)-structure.

Some complements to the Lazard isomorphism

Lazard showed in his seminal work "Groupes analytiques $p$-adiques" that for rational coefficients continuous group cohomology of $p$-adic Lie-groups is isomorphic to Lie-algebra cohomology. We refine this result in two directions: firstly we extend his isomorphism under certain conditions to integral coefficients and secondly, we show that for algebraic groups, his isomorphism can be realized by differentiating locally analytic cochains.
