Secondary Invariants for String Bordism and tmf

Using spectral invariants of Dirac operators we construct a secondary version of the Witten genus, a bordism invariant of string manifolds in dimensions $4m-1$. We prove a secondary index theorem which relates this global-analytic construction with its homotopy-theoretic analog. The latter will be calculated through its factorization over topological modular forms.

Motivic Landweber Exactness

We prove a motivic version of Landweber's exact functor theorem from topology. The main result is that the assignment given by a Landweber-type formula using the MGL-homology of a motivic spectrum defines a homology theory on the stable motivic homotopy category and is representable by a Tate-like (or cellular) spectrum. Using the universal coefficient spectral sequence of Dugger-Isaksen we deduce formulas for operations of motivic Landweber spectra of a certain type including homotopy algebraic K-theory. Finally we construct a Chern character as a map between motivic spectra.

The f-invariant and index theory

In this paper we prove a tertiary index theorem which relates a spectral geometric and a homotopy theoretic invariant of an almost complex manifold with framed boundary. It is derived from the index theoretic and homotopy theoretic versions of a complex elliptic genus and interestingly related with the structure of the stable homotopy groups of spheres.

Chern classes, K-theory and Landweber exactness over nonregular base schemes

The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we use the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem to deduce that the Bott inverted infinite projective space is homotopy algebraic $K$-theory. The argument is considerably shorther than any other known proofs and serves well as an illustration of the effectiveness of Landweber exactness. Second, we dispense with the regularity assumption on the base scheme which is often implicitly required in the notion of oriented motivic ring spectra. The latter allows us to verify the motivic Landweber exact functor theorem and the universal property of the algebraic cobordism spectrum for every noetherian base scheme of finite Krull dimension.

Arithmetically defined dense subgroups of Morava stabilizer groups

For every prime $p$ and integer $n\ge 3$ we explicitly construct an abelian variety $A/\F_{p^n}$ of dimension $n$ such that for a suitable prime $l$ the group of quasi-isogenies of $A/\F_{p^n}$ of $l$-power degree is canonically a dense subgroup of the $n$-th Morava stabilizer group at $p$. We also give a variant of this result taking into account a polarization. This is motivated by a perceivable generalization of topological modular forms to more general topological automorphic forms. For this, we prove some results about approximation of local units in maximal orders which is of independent interest. For example, it gives a precise solution to the problem of extending automorphisms of the $p$-divisible group of a simple abelian variety over a finite field to quasi-isogenies of the abelian variety of degree divisible by as few primes as possible.

Beta-elements and divided congruences

The f-invariant is an injective homomorphism from the 2-line of the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence to a group which is closely related to divided congruences of elliptic modular forms. We compute the f-invariant for two infinite families of beta-elements and explain the relation of the arithmetic of divided congruences with the Kervaire invariant one problem.

A quantitative sharpening of Moriwaki's arithmetic Bogomolov inequality

A. Moriwaki proved the following arithmetic analogue of the Bogomolov unstability theorem. If a torsion-free hermitian coherent sheaf on an arithmetic surface has negative discriminant then it admits an arithmetically destabilising subsheaf. In the geometric situation it is known that such a subsheaf can be found subject to an additional numerical constraint and here we prove the arithmetic analogue. We then apply this result to slightly simplify a part of C. Soulé's proof of a vanishing theorem on arithmetic surfaces.

Representability of Aut_F and End_F

Recently N. Nitsure showed that for a coherent sheaf F on a noetherian scheme the automorphism functor Aut_F is representable if and only if F is locally free. Here we remove the noetherian hypothesis and show that the same result holds for the endomorphism functor End_F even if one asks for representability by an algebraic space.
