Convergence from two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system to two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson system with Ohm's law

In this paper, we justify the convergence from the two-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (in briefly,VPB) system to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (in briefly, NSFP) system with Ohm's law in the context of classical solutions. We prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $\varepsilon$ for the solutions to the two-species VPB system near equilibrium by treating the strong interspecies interactions. Consequently, we prove the convergence to the two-fluid incompressible NSFP as $\varepsilon$ go to 0.

Performance Optimization of Surface Electromyography (sEMG) based Biometric Sensing System for both Verification and Identification

Recently, surface electromyography (sEMG) emerged as a novel biometric authentication method. Since EMG system parameters, such as the feature extraction methods and the number of channels, have been known to affect system performances, it is important to investigate these effects on the performance of the sEMG-based biometric system to determine optimal system parameters. In this study, three robust feature extraction methods, Time-domain (TD) feature, Frequency Division Technique (FDT), and Autoregressive (AR) feature, and their combinations were investigated while the number of channels varying from one to eight. For these system parameters, the performance of sixteen static wrist and hand gestures was systematically investigated in two authentication modes: verification and identification. The results from 24 participants showed that the TD features significantly (p<0.05) and consistently outperformed FDT and AR features for all channel numbers. The results also showed that the performance of a four-channel setup was not significantly different from those with higher number of channels. The average equal error rate (EER) for a four-channel sEMG verification system was 4% for TD features, 5.3% for FDT features, and 10% for AR features. For an identification system, the average Rank-1 error (R1E) for a four-channel configuration was 3% for TD features, 12.4% for FDT features, and 36.3% for AR features. The electrode position on the flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscle had a critical contribution to the authentication performance. Thus, the combination of the TD feature set and a four-channel sEMG system with one of the electrodes positioned on the FCU are recommended for optimal authentication performance.

Infrared Echoes of Optical Tidal Disruption Events: ~1% Dust Covering Factor or Less at sub-parsec Scale

The past decade has experienced an explosive increase of optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) with the advent of modern time-domain surveys. However, we still lack a comprehensive observational view of their infrared (IR) echoes in spite of individual detections. To this end, we have conducted a statistical study of IR variability of the 23 optical TDEs discovered between 2009 and 2018 utilizing the full public dataset of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. The detection of variability is performed on the difference images, yielding out 11 objects with significant (>$3σ$) variability in at least one band while dust emission can be only fitted in 8 objects. Their peak dust luminosity is around $10^{41}$-$10^{42}$ erg/s, corresponding to a dust covering factor $f_c\sim0.01$ at scale of sub-parsec. The only exception is the disputed source ASASSN-15lh, which shows an ultra-high dust luminosity ($\sim10^{43.5}$ erg/s) and make its nature even elusive. Other non-detected objects show even lower $f_c$, which could be one more order of magnitude lower. The derived $f_c$ is generally much smaller than those of dusty tori in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), suggesting either a dearth of dust or a geometrically thin and flat disk in the vicinity of SMBHs. Our results also indicate that the optical TDE sample (post-starburst galaxies overrepresented) is seriously biased to events with little dust at sub-pc scale while TDEs in dusty star-forming systems could be more efficiently unveiled by IR echoes.

The Incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier Limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac Equation

We study Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation when quantum effects are taken into account in dilute gas dynamics. By employing new estimates on trilinear terms of collision kernels, we prove the global existence of the classical solution to Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation near equilibrium. Furthermore, the limit from Boltzmann-Fermi-Dirac equation to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations is justified rigorously. The corresponding formal analysis was given in the thesis of Zakrevskiy \cite{Zakrevskiy}

Stability of equilibria to the model for non-isothermal electrokinetics

Recently, energetic variational approach was employed to derive models for non-isothermal electrokinetics by Liu et. al \cite{Liu-Wu-Liu-CMS2018}. In particular, the Poisson-Nernst-Planck-Fourier (PNPF) system for the dynamics of $N$-ionic species in a solvent was derived. In this paper we first reformulate PNPF ($4N+6$ equations) into an evolutional system with $N+1$ equations, and define a new total electrical charge. We then prove the constant states are stable provided that they are such that the perturbed systems around them are dissipative. However, not all positive constant solutions of PNPF are such that the corresponding perturbed systems are dissipative. We characterize a set of equilibria $\mathcal{S}_{eq}$ whose elements satisfy the conditions {(A1)} and {(A2)}, and prove it is nonempty. After then, we prove the stability of these equilibria, thus the global well-posedness of PNPF near them.

An Extraordinary Response of Iron Emission to the Central Outburst in a Tidal Disruption Event Candidate

Understanding the origin of \feii\ emission is important because it is crucial to construct the main sequence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Despite several decades of observational and theoretical effort, the location of the optical iron emitting region and the mechanism responsible for the positive correlation between the \feii\ strength and the black hole accretion rate remain open questions as yet. In this letter, we report the optical \feii\ response to the central outburst in PS1-10adi, a candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) taking place in an AGN at $z = 0.203$ that has aroused extensive attention. For the first time, we observe that the \feii\ response in the rising phase of its central luminosity is significantly more prominent than that in the decline phase, showing a hysteresis effect. We interpret this hysteresis effect as a consequence of the gradual sublimation of the dust grains situating at the inner surface of the torus into gas when the luminosity of the central engine increases. It is the iron element released from the sublimated dust that contributes evidently to the observed \feii\ emission. This interpretation, together with the weak response of the \hb\ emission as we observe, naturally explains the applicability of relative \feii\ strength as a tracer of the Eddington ratio. In addition, optical iron emission of this origin renders the \feii\ time lag a potential "standard candle" with cosmological implications.

X-ray flares from the stellar tidal disruption by a candidate supermassive black hole binary

Optical transient surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of stellar tidal disruption events (TDEs) by massive black hole in the centers of galaxies. Despite extensive searches, X-ray follow-up observations have produced no or only weak X-ray detections in most of them. Here we report the discovery of delayed X-ray brightening around 140 days after the optical outburst in the TDE OGLE16aaa, followed by several flux dips during the decay phase. These properties are unusual for standard TDEs and could be explained by the presence of supermassive black hole binary or patchy obscuration. In either scenario, the X-rays can be produced promptly after the disruption but are blocked in the early phase, possibly by a radiation-dominated ejecta which leads to the bulk of optical and ultraviolet emission. Our findings imply that the reprocessing is important in the TDE early evolution, and X-ray observations are promising in revealing supermassive black hole binaries.

Entropy inequality and energy dissipation of inertial Qian-Sheng model for nematic liquid crystals

For the inertial Qian-Sheng model of nematic liquid crystals in the $Q$-tensor framework, we illustrate the roles played by the entropy inequality and energy dissipation in the well-posedness of smooth solutions when we employ energy method. We first derive the coefficients requirements from the entropy inequality, and point out the entropy inequality is insufficient to guarantee energy dissipation. We then introduce a novel Condition (H) which ensures the energy dissipation. We prove that when both the entropy inequality and Condition (H) are obeyed, the local in time smooth solutions exist for large initial data. Otherwise, we can only obtain small data local solutions. Furthermore, to extend the solutions globally in time and obtain the decay of solutions, we require at least one of the two conditions: entropy inequality, or $\tildeμ_2= μ_2$, which significantly enlarge the range of the coefficients in previous works.

Mid-InfraRed Outburst in Nearby Galaxies (MIRONG) I: Sample Selection and Characterization

The optical time-domain astronomy has grown rapidly in the past decade but the dynamic infrared sky is rarely explored. Aiming to construct a sample of mid-infrared outburst in nearby galaxies (MIRONG), we have conducted a systematical search of low-redshift ($z<0.35$) SDSS spectroscopic galaxies that have experienced recent MIR flares using their Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) light curves. A total of 137 galaxies have been selected by requiring a brightening amplitude of 0.5 magnitude in at least one WISE band with respect to their quiescent phases. Only a small faction (10.9%) has corresponding optical flares. Except for the four supernova (SNe) in our sample, the MIR luminosity of remaining sources ($L_{\rm 4.6μm}>10^{42}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$) are markedly brighter than known SNe and their physical locations are very close to the galactic center (median <0.1"). Only four galaxies are radio-loud indicating that synchrotron radiation from relativistic jets could contribute MIR variability. We propose that these MIR outburst are dominated by the dust echoes of transient accretion onto supermassive black holes, such as tidal disruption events (TDEs) and turn-on (changing-look) AGNs. Moreover, the inferred peak MIR luminosity function is generally consistent with the X-ray and optical TDEs at high end albeit with large uncertainties. Our results suggest that a large population of transients have been overlooked by optical surveys, probably due to dust obscuration or intrinsically optical weakness. Thus, a search in the infrared band is crucial for us to obtain a panoramic picture of nuclear outburst. The multiwavength follow-up observations of the MIRONG sample are in progress and will be presented in a series of subsequent papers.

Years Delayed X-ray Afterglows of TDEs Originated from Wind-Torus Interactions

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) occurred in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are a special class of sources with outstanding scientific significance. TDEs can generate ultrafast winds, which should almost inevitably collide with the preexisting AGN dusty tori. We perform analytical calculations and simulations on the wind-torus interactions and find such a process can generate considerable X-ray afterglow radiation several years or decades later after the TDE outburst. This provides a new origin for the years delayed X-rays in TDEs. The X-ray luminosity can reach 10^{41-42} erg/s, and the light curve characteristics depend on the parameters of winds and tori. We apply the model to two TDE candidates, and provide lower limits on the masses of the disrupted stars, as well as rigorous constraints on the gas densities of tori. Our results suggest that the observations of the time delay, spectral shape, luminosity and the light curve of the X-ray afterglow can be used to constrain the physical parameters of both TDE winds and tori, including the wind velocity, wind density and torus density.

Small data global regularity for 3-D Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic liquid crystal model without kinematic transport

In this article, we consider the Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for incompressible liquid crystal model without kinematic transport in three spatial dimensions, which is a nonlinear coupling of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with wave map to $\mathbb{S}^2$. Global regularity for small and smooth initial data near the equilibrium is proved. The proof relies on the idea of space-time resonance.

Coupled Self-Organized Hydrodynamics and Navier-Stokes models: local well-posedness and the limit from the Self-Organized Kinetic-fluid models

A coupled system of self-organized hydrodynamics and Navier-Stokes equations (SOH-NS), which models self-propelled particles in a viscous fluid, was recently derived by Degond et al. \cite{DMVY-2017-arXiv}, starting from a micro-macro particle system of Vicsek-Navier-Stokes model, through an intermediate step of a self-organized kinetic-kinetic model by multiple coarse-graining processes. We first transfer SOH-NS into a non-singular system by stereographic projection, then prove the local in time well-posedness of classical solutions by energy method. Furthermore, employing the Hilbert expansion approach, we justify the hydrodynamic limit from the self-organized kinetic-fluid model to macroscopic dynamics. This provides the first analytically rigorous justification of the modeling and asymptotic analysis in \cite{DMVY-2017-arXiv}.

On well-posedness of Ericksen-Leslie's paraboloc-hyperbolic liquid crystal model

We establish the following well-posedness results on Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model: 1, if the dissipation coefficients β= μ_4 - 4 μ_6 > 0, and the size of the initial energy E^{in} is small enough, then the life span of the solution is at least -O(\ln E^{in}); 2, for the special case that the coefficients μ_1 = μ_2 = μ_3 = μ_5 = μ_6 = 0, for which the model is the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the wave map from \mathbb{R}^n to \mathbb{S}^2, the same existence result holds but without the smallness restriction on the size of the initial data; 3, with further constraints on the coefficients, namely α= μ_4 - 4 μ_6 - \tfrac{ (|λ_1| - 7 λ_2)^2 }η - \tfrac{ 2 ( 7 |λ_1| - 2λ_2 )^2 }{ |λ_1| } > 0 and μ_2 < μ_3, the global classical solution with small initial data can be established. A relation between the Lagrangian multiplier and the geometric constraint |d|=1 plays a key role in the proof.

A scaling limit from the wave map to the heat flow into $\mathbb{S}^2$

In this paper we study a limit connecting a scaled wave map with the heat flow into the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. We show quantitatively how that the two equations are connected by means of an initial layer correction. This limit is motivated as a first step into understanding the limit of zero inertia for the hyperbolic-parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal model.

Sensitivity analysis and incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit of Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with uncertainty

For the Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann equations with random uncertainties from the initial data or collision kernels, we proved the sensitivity analysis and energy estimates uniformly with respect to the Knudsen number in the diffusive scaling using hypocoercivity method. As a consequence, we also justified the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson limit with random inputs. In particular, for the first time, we obtain the precise convergence rate {\em without} employing any results based on Hilbert expansion. We not only generalized the previous deterministic Navier-Stokes-Poisson limits to random initial data case, also improve the previous uncertainty quantification results to the case where the initial data include both kinetic and fluid parts.

From Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann system to incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson system: convergence for classical solutions

For the one-species Vlasov-Poisson-Boltzmann (VPB) system in the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations formally converge to the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Poisson (NSFP) system, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to the Knudsen number $ε$ for the fluctuations. As a consequence, the existence of the global-in-time classical solutions of VPB with all $ε\in (0,1]$ is established in whole space under small size of initial data, and the convergence to incompressible NSFP as $ε$ go to 0 is rigorously justified.

A Mid-infrared Flare in the Active Galaxy MCG-02-04-026: Dust Echo of a Nuclear Transient Event

We report the discovery of a mid-infrared (MIR) flare using WISE data in the center of the nearby Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-02-04-026. The MIR flare began in the first half of 2014, peaked around the end of 2015, and faded in 2017. During these years, energy more than $7\times10^{50}$ erg was released in the infrared, and the flare's MIR color was generally turning red. We detected neither optical nor ultraviolet (UV) variation corresponding to the MIR flare based on available data. We explained the MIR flare using a dust echo model in which the radiative transfer is involved. The MIR flare can be well explained as thermal reradiation from dust heated by UV-optical photons of a primary nuclear transient event. Although the transient event was not seen directly due to dust obscuration, we can infer that it may produce a total energy of at least $\sim10^{51}$ erg, most of which was released in less than $\sim$3 years. The nature of the transient event could be a stellar tidal disruption event by the central supermassive black hole (SMBH), or a sudden enhancement of the existing accretion flow onto the SMBH, or a supernova which was particularly bright.

Multiwavelength Study of an X-ray Tidal Disruption Event Candidate in NGC 5092

We present multiwavelength studies of a transient X-ray source, XMMSL1 J131952.3+225958, associated with the galaxy NGC 5092 at $z=0.023$ detected in the XMM-Newton SLew survey (XMMSL). The source brightened in the 0.2--2 keV band by a factor of $>20$ in 2005 as compared with previous flux limits and then faded by a factor of $>200$ as observed with it XMM-Newton in 2013 and with it Swift in 2018. At the flaring state, the X-ray spectrum can be modeled with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ 60 eV and an overall luminosity of $\sim$ $1.5 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. A UV flare and optical flare were also detected with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, respectively, within several months of the X-ray flare, whose nonstellar UV--optical spectrum can be described with a blackbody at a temperature of $\sim$ $(1-2) \times 10^4$ K and a luminosity of $\sim$ $(2-6) \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Interestingly, mid-infrared monitoring observations of NGC 5092 with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer 5--13 yr later show a continuous flux decline. These dramatic variability properties, from the X-ray through UV and optical to infrared, appear to be orderly, suggestive of a stellar tidal disruption event (TDE) by a massive black hole, confirming the postulation by Kanner et al.(2013). This TDE candidate belongs to a rare sample with contemporaneous bright emission detected in the X-ray, UV, and optical, which are later echoed by dust-reprocessed light in the mid-infrared. The black hole has a mass of $\sim$ $5 \times 10^{7} \rm M_{\odot}$, residing in a galaxy that is dominated by a middle-aged stellar population of 2.5 Gyr.
