X-ray spectral shape variations in changing-look Seyfert galaxy SDSSJ155258+273728

We analyze the X-ray, optical, and mid-infrared data of a "changing-look" Seyfert galaxy \sdssj15 at $z\simeq0.086$. Over a period of one decade (2009 - 2018), its broad H$α$ line intensity increased by a factor of $\sim$4. Meanwhile, the X-ray emission in 2014 as observed by \chandra\ was about five times brighter than that in 2010 by {\it Suzaku}, and the corresponding emissions in V-band, mid-infrared W1 band brighten by $\sim$ 0.18, 0.32 mag, respectively. Moreover, the absorption in X-rays is moderate and stable, i.e. ${\rm N_{H}}\sim 10^{21} {\rm cm^{-2}}$, but the X-ray spectrum becomes harder in the 2014 \chandra\ bright state (i.e. photon index $Γ= 1.52^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$) than that of the 2010 \suzaku\ low state ($Γ=2.03^{+0.22}_{-0.21}$). With an Eddington ratio being lower than a few percent, the inner region of the accretion disk in \sdssj15\ is likely a hot accretion flow. We then compile from literature the X-ray data of "changing-look" AGNs, and find that they generally follow the well-established "V"-shaped correlation in AGNs, that is, above a critical turn-over luminosity the X-ray spectra soften with the increasing luminosity, and below that luminosity the trend is reversed in a way of "harder when brighter". This presents a direct evidence that CL-AGNs have distinctive changes in not only the optical spectral type, but also the X-ray spectral shape. The similarity in the X-ray spectral evolution between CL-AGNs and black hole X-ray binaries indicates that the observed CL-AGNs phenomena may relate to the state transition in accretion physics.

The Structure of Tidal Disruption Event Host Galaxies on Scales of Tens to Thousands of Parsecs

We explore the galaxy structure of four tidal disruption event (TDE) host galaxies on 30 pc to kpc scales using HST WFC3 multi-band imaging. The star formation histories of these hosts are diverse, including one post-starburst galaxy (ASASSN-14li), two hosts with recent weak starbursts (ASASSN-14ae and iPTF15af), and one early type (PTF09ge). Compared to early type galaxies of similar stellar masses, the TDE hosts have higher central surface brightnesses and stellar mass surface densities on 30-100 pc scales. The TDE hosts do not show the large, kpc-scale tidal disruptions seen in some post-starburst galaxies; the hosts have low morphological asymmetries similar to those of early type galaxies. The lack of strong asymmetries are inconsistent with a recent major (~1:1 mass) merger, although minor ($\lesssim$1:3) mergers are possible. Given the time elapsed since the end of the starbursts in the three post-burst TDE hosts and the constraints on the merger mass ratios, it is unlikely that a bound supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) has had time to coalesce. The TDE hosts have low central (<140 pc) ellipticities compared to early type galaxies. The low central ellipticities disfavor a strong radial anisotropy as the cause for the enhanced TDE rate, although we cannot rule out eccentric disks at the scale of the black hole gravitational radius of influence (~1 pc). These observations suggest that the high central stellar densities are a more important driver than SMBHBs or radial anisotropies in increasing the TDE rate in galaxies with recent starbursts.

Small data global regularity for simplified 3-D Ericksen-Leslie's compressible hyperbolic liquid crystal model

In this article, we consider the Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for compressible liquid crystal model in three spatial dimensions. Global regularity for small and smooth initial data near equilibrium is proved for the case that the system is a nonlinear coupling of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with wave map to $\mathbb{S}^2$. Our argument is a combination of vector field method and Fourier analysis. The main strategy to prove global regularity relies on an interplay between the control of high order energies and decay estimates, which is based on the idea inspired by the method of space-time resonances. In particular the different behaviors of the decay properties of the density and velocity field for compressible fluids at different frequencies play a key role.

A Deeply Buried Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Nucleus Uncovered in Scattered Light

We present spectropolarimetric and spectrophotometric observations of the peculiar active galactic nucleus (AGN) SDSS J120300.19+162443.7 (hereafter J1203+1624) at $z=0.1656$. Its optical total flux spectra clearly show broad emission lines (BELs) in H$α$ and H$β$. After removal of narrow emission lines (NELs), the full width at half maximum of the lorentzian BEL is $FWHM_{\rm BEL} \approx 1,270$ km s$^{-1}$, fulfilling the conventional definition of a narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. However, its NELs are unprecedentedly strong when compared to type 1AGNs. This, together with its large MIR excess ($g-W_4 = 13.172$ mag), implies that the observer and the narrow emission line region (NELR) might see a different ionization continuum. Our optical spectropolarimetry confirms its type 2 nature by detecting a polarized blue continuum and Balmer BELs ($FWHM_{\rm Polarized~BEL} \approx 1,183$ km s$^{-1}$), with a high polarization degree of $> 20$% in the blue wing. The mass and Eddington rate of the central black hole is estimated based on both transmitted and scattered AGN radiation, which is $M_{\bullet} < 2.9 \times 10^7 M_\odot$ and $L_{\rm bol}/L_{\rm Edd} > 1.5$. Severe extinction of the AGN emission also enables a clear view of the compact host galaxy. Discovery of J1203+1624 suggests that NLS1 follows AGN unfication scheme, studying of its analogs could blaze a new trail for exploring the connection between black hole growth and star formation in the host galaxy. Interesting features of J1203+1624 like the peculiar NELs, inflowing scattering clouds within sublimation radius are worth detailed follow-ups in the future.

An On-going Mid-infrared Outburst in the White Dwarf 0145+234: Catching in Action of Tidal Disruption of an Exoasteroid?

We report the detection of a large amplitude MIR outburst in the white dwarf (WD) 0145+234 in the NEOWISE Survey data. The source had a stable MIR flux before 2018, and was brightened by about 1.0 magnitude in the W1 and W2 bands within half a year and has been continuously brightening since then. No significant variations are found in the optical photometry data during the same period. This suggests that this MIR outburst is caused by recent replenishing or redistribution of dust, rather than intrinsic variations of the WD. SED modeling of 0145+234 suggests that there was already a dust disk around the WD in the quiescent state, and both of the temperature and surface area of the disk evolved rapidly since the outburst. The dust temperature was about 1770K in the initial rising phase, close to the sublimation temperature of silicate grains, and gradually cooled down to around 1150K, while the surface area increased by a factor of about 6 during the same period. The inferred closest distance of dust to the WD is within the tidal disruption radius of a gravitationally bounded asteroid. We estimated the dust mass to be between $3\times10^{15}$ to $3\times10^{17}$ $ρ/(1 \mathrm g~cm^{-3})$ kg for silicate grains of a power-law size distribution with a high cutoff size from 0.1 to 1000 microns. We interpret this as a possible tidal breakup of an exo-asteroid by the WD. Further follow-up observations of this rare event may provide insights on the origin of dust disk and metal pollution in some white dwarfs.

Multi-wavelength variability of CGRaBS J0733+0456: identifying a distant $γ$-ray blazar at z = 3.01

We report on OVRO, WISE, Swift and Fermi-LAT observations of the high redshift blazar CGRaBS J0733+0456, from which significant flux variations in radio, infrared (IR) as well as $γ$-ray domains are detected. Particularly, the amplitude of long-term IR variation is over one order of magnitude and the IR variability timescale can be constrained as short as a few hours in the source frame. The IR and $γ$-ray light curves are found to be rather similar, and the strong quasi-simultaneous infrared and $γ$-ray flares are proved to be unique among the nearby $γ$-ray sources. This is the first time to identify a $γ-$ray blazar at redshift $z\geq 3$ with multi-wavelength flux variations (flares). Broadband spectral energy distributions in different flux states are constructed and theoretically described. The $γ-$ray flares from some blazars as distant as redshift $\sim$ 5 are expected to be detectable for Fermi-LAT.

Simultaneous induction of SSMVEP and SMR Using a Gaiting video stimulus: a novel hybrid brain-computer interface

We proposed a novel visual stimulus for brain-computer interface. The stimulus is in the form gaiting sequence of a human. The hypothesis is that observing such a visual stimulus would simultaneously induce 1) steady-state motion visual evoked potential (SSMVEP) in the occipital area, similarly to an SSVEP stimulus; and 2) sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) in the primary sensorimotor area, because such action observation (AO) could activate the mirror neuron system. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to detect SSMVEP from occipital EEG, and event-related spectral perturbations (ERSP) were used to identify SMR in the EEG from the sensorimotor area. The results showed that the proposed visual gaiting stimulus-induced SSMVEP, with classification accuracies of 88.9 $\pm$ 12.0% in a four-class scenario. More importantly, it induced clear and sustained event-related desynchronization/synchronization (ERD/ERS) in the EEG from the sensorimotor area, while no ERD/ERS in the sensorimotor area could be observed when the other two SSVEP stimuli were used. Further, for participants with sufficiently clear SSMVEP pattern (classification accuracy > 85%), the ERD index values in mu-beta band induced by the proposed gaiting stimulus were statistically different from that of the other two types of stimulus. Therefore, a novel BCI based on the proposed stimulus has potential in neurorehabilitation applications because it simultaneously has the high accuracy of an SSMVEP (~90% accuracy in a four-class setup) and the ability to activate sensorimotor cortex. And such potential will be further explored in future studies.

From Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system to two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell system with Ohm's law: convergence for classical solutions

For the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann (VMB) system with the scaling under which the moments of the fluctuations to the global Maxwellians formally converge to the two-fluid incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier-Maxwell (NSFM) system with Ohm's law, we prove the uniform estimates with respect to Knudsen number $\eps$ for the fluctuations. As consequences, the existence of the global in time classical solutions of VMB with all $\eps \in (0,1]$ is established. Furthermore, the convergence of the fluctuations of the solutions of VMB to the classical solutions of NSFM with Ohm's law is rigorously justified. This limit was justified in the recent breakthrough of Arsénio and Saint-Raymond \cite{Arsenio-SRM-2016} from renormalized solutions of VMB to dissipative solutions of incompressible viscous electro-magneto-hydrodynamics under the corresponding scaling. In this sense, our result gives a classical solution analogue of the corresponding limit in \cite{Arsenio-SRM-2016}.

The zero inertia limit of Ericksen-Leslie's model for liquid crystals

In this paper we study the zero inertia limit that is from the hyperbolic to parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal flow. By introducing an initial layer and constructing an energy norm and energy dissipation functional depending on the solutions of the limiting system, we derive a global in time uniform energy bound to the remainder system under the small size of the initial data.

Initial results from a systematic search for changing-look active galactic nuclei selected via mid-infrared variability

Changing look active-galatic-nuclei (CL AGNs) can yield considerable insight into accretion physics as well as the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies. A large sample of these CL AGNs is essential to achieve the latter goal. We propose an effective method to select CL candidates from spectroscopic quasar catalogs using the mid-infrared (MIR) variability information derived from ALL-WISE/NEOWISE data releases. Our primary selection criteria include both a large amplitude flux variation and a transition of MIR color from an AGN to a normal galaxy. A pilot spectroscopic follow-up of 7 candidates among about 300 candidates selected from Sloan Digital Sky Survey low-redshift (z<0.5) AGN sample results in 6 new turn-off CL AGNs. We expect to obtain hundreds of CL AGNs once full spectroscopic follow-up of the sample is carried out.

Global classical solutions to an evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity

In this paper, we first prove the local-in-time existence of the evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity with finite initial energy by employing the nonlinear iterative approach given in \cite{Jiang-Luo-2019-SIAM} to deal with the geometric constraint $M \in \mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ in the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. Inspired by \cite{Lin-Liu-Zhang-CPAM2005, Lin-Zhang-2008-CPAM}, we reformulate the evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity with vanishing external magnetic field $H_{ext}$, so that a further dissipative term will be sought from the elastic stress. We thereby justify the global well-posedness to the evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity with zero external magnetic field under small size of initial data.

Infrared echo and late-stage rebrightening of nuclear transient PS1-10adi: exploring Torus by tidal disruption event in active galactic nuclei

Tidal disruption events (TDEs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been overlooked for a long time but tentatively been investigated recently. We report the discovery of a long-lasting luminous mid-infrared (mid-IR) flare in PS1-10adi, which is a newly-identified highly energetic transient event occurred in AGN. The IR luminosity of PS1-10adi, as well as other analogous events, are at least one order of magnitude higher than all known supernova, but can be well interpreted as the dust echoes of TDEs, whose ultra-high IR energy is reprocessed from the dusty torus around the black hole. The torus dust is sublimating during the early stage of the outburst and probably lead to the observed rapid emergence of Fe II lines. Moreover, the UV-optical rebrightening and contemporaneous X-ray onset after $\sim1500$ rest-frame days since the optical peak is also an intriguing feature of PS1-10adi, which could be attributed to the interaction between the high-velocity outflow and torus. We suggest that the luminous IR echo is a very typical phenomenon of TDEs in AGNs and may provide us an ideal opportunity to explore the torus properties.

Discovery of An Active Intermediate-Mass Black Hole Candidate in the Barred Bulgeless Galaxy NGC 3319

We report the discovery of an active intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) candidate in the center of nearby barred bulgeless galaxy $\rm NGC~3319$. The point X-ray source revealed by archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations is spatially coincident with the optical and UV galactic nuclei from Hubble Space Telescope observations. The spectral energy distribution derived from the unresolved X-ray and UV-optical flux is comparable with active galactic nuclei (AGNs) rather than ultra-luminous X-ray sources, although its bolometric luminosity is only $3.6\times10^{40}~\rm erg~s^{-1}$. Assuming an Eddington ratio range between 0.001 and 1, the black hole mass ($M_\rm{BH}$) will be located at $3\times10^2-3\times10^5~M_{\odot}$, placing it in the so-called IMBH regime and could be the one of the lowest reported so far. Estimates from other approaches (e.g., fundamental plane, X-ray variability) also suggest $M_\rm{BH}\lesssim10^5~M_{\odot}$.Similar to other BHs in bulgeless galaxies, the discovered IMBH resides in a nuclear star cluster with mass of $\sim6\times10^6~M_{\odot}$. The detection of such a low-mass BH offers us an ideal chance to study the formation and early growth of SMBH seeds, which may result from the bar-driven inflow in late-type galaxies with a prominent bar such as $\rm NGC~3319$.

A Strange EUV Emission: Scattered Continuum in the Lymann Limit Absorption Edge toward the Quasar SDSS J125903.26+621211.5?

We identified a peculiar proximate sub-damped Lya absorption system (sub-DLA) at z=3.234 with a neutral hydrogen column density of $N_{H} =10^{19.70\pm0.15}~\rm cm^{-2}$ toward the quasar SDSS J125903.26+621211.5 in two epoch optical spectra of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We detected Lya residue in the proximate sub-DLA trough at $> 8σ$ level. To our surprise, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) continuum emission is significantly ($> 4σ$) detected in the corresponding Lymann limit absorption edge at both of the FUV and NUV bands by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The high neutral hydrogen column density should allow a negligible transmission of both the Lya line photons and EUV continuum photons due to the high optical depth of the gas. The possible scenarios of foreground galaxy contamination, partial coverage, emission from the quasar host galaxy, and extended Lya emission are excluded in turn, and we speculate that the residual Lya and EUV emission is due to photons scattering (broad Lya and the continuum emission) of electrons residing at a spatial scale larger than that of the proximate sub-DLA. Electron scattering is wavelength-independent, the scattered light is therefore a copy of the incident spectrum that might originate in the accretion disk. With the assistances from the neutral hydrogen absorbers as the "natural coronagraph" and the scatterers as the "natural mirror", we yielded a very hard EUV spectral index of $α= 0.65\pm 0.25$ ($F_ν\propto ν^α$), consistent with the standard picture of the locally heated accretion disk in the inner EUV-emitting radii, as well as in the outer near-infrared-emitting radii suggested by Kishimoto et al. (2008).

Long-Term Decline of the Mid-Infrared Emission of Normal Galaxies: Dust Echo of Tidal Disruption Flare?

We report the discovery of a sample of 19 low redshift (z<0.22) spectroscopically non-Seyfert galaxies that show slow declining mid-infrared (MIR) light-curves (LCs), similar to those of tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates with extreme coronal lines. Two sources also showed a relatively fast rising MIR LCs. They consist of 61% sample of the WISE MIR variable non-Seyfert galaxies with SDSS spectra. In a comparison sample of optically selected Seyfert galaxies, the fraction of sources with such a LC is only 15%. After rejecting 5 plausible obscured Seyfert galaxies with red MIR colours, remaining 14 objects are studied in detail in this paper. We fit the declining part of LC with an exponential law, and the decay time is typically one year. The observed peak MIR luminosities ($νL_ν$) after subtracting host galaxies are in the range of a few 10^42 to 10^44 erg~s^-1 with a median of 5x10^43 erg~s^-1 in the W2 band. The black hole masses distribute in a wide range with more than half in between 10^7 to 10^8 ~M_sun, but significantly different from that of optical/UV selected TDEs. Furthermore, MIR luminosities are correlated with black hole masses, the stellar mass or luminosity of their host bulges. Most galaxies in the sample are red and luminous with an absolute magnitude of r between -20 to -23. We estimate the rate of event about 10^-4 gal^-1~yr^-1 among luminous red galaxies. We discuss several possibilities for the variable infrared sources, and conclude that most likely, they are caused by short sporadic fueling to the supermassive black holes via either the instability of accretion flows or tidal disruption of stars.

On well-posedness of Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model in compressible flow

We study the Ericksen-Leslie's parabolic-hyperbolic liquid crystal model in compressible flow. Inspired by our study for incompressible case \cite{Jiang-Luo-arXiv-2017} and some techniques from compressible Navier-Stokes equations, we prove the local-in-time existence of the classical solution to the system with finite initial energy, under some constraints on the Leslie coefficients which ensure the basic energy law is dissipative. Furthermore, with an additional assumption on the coefficients which provides a damping effect, and the smallness of the initial energy, the global classical solution can be established.

Mid-infrared flare of TDE candidate PS16dtm: dust echo and implications for the spectral evolution

PS16dtm was classified as a candidate tidal disruption event (TDE) in a dwarf Seyfert 1 galaxy with low-mass black hole ($\sim10^6M\odot$) and has presented various intriguing photometric and spectra characteristics. Using the archival WISE and the newly released NEOWISE data, we found PS16dtm is experiencing a mid-infrared (MIR) flare which started $\sim11$ days before the first optical detection. Interpreting the MIR flare as a dust echo requires close pre-existing dust with a high covering factor, and suggests the optical flare may have brightened slowly for some time before it became bright detectable from the ground. More evidence is given at the later epochs. At the peak of the optical light curve, the new inner radius of the dust torus has grown to much larger size, a factor of 7 of the initial radius due to strong radiation field. At $\sim150$ days after the first optical detection, the dust temperature has dropped well below the sublimation temperature. Other peculiar spectral features shown by PS16dtm are the transient, prominent FeII emission lines and outflows indicated by broad absorption lines detected during the optical flare. Our model explains the enhanced FeII emission from iron newly released from the evaporated dust. The observed broad absorption line outflow could be explained by accelerated gas in the dust torus due to the radiation pressure.

The Boltzmann equation with incoming boundary condition: global solutions and Navier-Stokes limit

We consider the Boltzmann equations with cutoff collision kernels in bounded domains. For the initial data with finite physical bounds, we prove the existence of global-in-time renormalized solutions in the sense of DiPerna-Lions endowed with incoming boundary condition. Moreover, we justify the limit as the Knudsen number $ε\rightarrow 0$ to Leray solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions from renormalized solutions of the scaled Boltzmann equations when the incoming data are close to the global Maxwellian in the sense of the boundary relative entropy of order $O(ε^3)$
