3D orientation super-resolution spatial-frequency-shift microscopy

Super-resolution mapping of the 3D orientation of fluorophores reveals the alignment of biological structures where the fluorophores are tightly attached, and thus plays a vital role in studying the organization and dynamics of bio-complexes. However, current super-resolution imaging techniques are either limited to 2D orientation mapping or suffer from slow speed and the requirement of special labels in 3D orientation mapping. Here, we propose a novel polarized virtual spatial-frequency-shift effect to overcome these restrictions to achieve a universal 3D orientation super-resolution mapping capability. To demonstrate the mechanism, we simulate the imaging process and reconstruct the spatial-angular information for sparsely distributed dipoles with random 3D orientations and microfilament-like structures decorated with fluorophores oriented parallel to them. The 3D orientation distribution can be recovered with a doubled spatial resolution and an average angular precision of up to 2.39 degrees. The performance of the approach with noise has also been analyzed considering real implementation.

Search for Dark-Matter-Nucleon Interactions with a Dark Mediator in PandaX-4T

We report results of a search for dark-matter-nucleon interactions via a dark mediator using optimized low-energy data from the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. With the ionization-signal-only data and utilizing the Migdal effect, we set the most stringent limits on the cross section for dark matter masses ranging from 30~$\rm{MeV/c^2}$ to 2~$\rm{GeV/c^2}$. Under the assumption that the dark mediator is a dark photon that decays into scalar dark matter pairs in the early Universe, we rule out significant parameter space of such thermal relic dark-matter model.

Search for light dark matter from atmosphere in PandaX-4T

We report a search for light dark matter produced through the cascading decay of $η$ mesons, which are created as a result of inelastic collisions between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere. We introduce a new and general framework, publicly accessible, designed to address boosted dark matter specifically, with which a full and dedicated simulation including both elastic and quasi-elastic processes of Earth attenuation effect on the dark matter particles arriving at the detector is performed. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data of 0.63 tonne$\cdot$year exposure, no significant excess over background is observed. The first constraints on the interaction between light dark matter generated in the atmosphere and nucleus through a light scalar mediator are obtained. The lowest excluded cross-section is set at $5.9 \times 10^{-37}{\rm cm^2}$ for dark matter mass of $0.1$ MeV$/c^2$ and mediator mass of 300 MeV$/c^2$. The lowest upper limit of $η$ to dark matter decay branching ratio is $1.6 \times 10^{-7}$.

On the density and multiplicity of solutions to the fractional Nirenberg problem

This paper is devoted to establishing some results on the density and multiplicity of solutions to the fractional Nirenberg problem which is equivalent to studying the conformally invariant equation $P_σ(v)=K v^{\frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}}$ on the standard unit sphere $(\mathbb{S}^n,g_0)$ with $σ\in (0,1)$ and $n\geq 2$, where $P_σ$ is the intertwining operator of order $2σ$ and $K$ is the prescribed curvature function. More specifically, by using the variational gluing method, refined analysis of bubbling behavior, extension formula, as well as the blow up analysis arguments, we obtain the existence of infinitely many multi-bump solutions. In particular, we show the smooth curvature functions of metrics conformal to $g_0$ are dense in the $C^{0}$ topology. Moreover, the related fractional Laplacian equations $(-Δ)^σ u=K(x) u^{\frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with $K(x)$ being asymptotically periodic in one of the variables, are also studied and infinitely many solutions are obtained under natural flatness assumptions.

A Search for Light Fermionic Dark Matter Absorption on Electrons in PandaX-4T

We report a search on a sub-MeV fermionic dark matter absorbed by electrons with an outgoing active neutrino using the 0.63 tonne-year exposure collected by PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. No significant signals are observed over the expected background. The data are interpreted into limits to the effective couplings between such dark matter and electrons. For axial-vector or vector interactions, our sensitivity is competitive in comparison to existing astrophysical bounds on the decay of such dark matter into photon final states. In particular, we present the first direct detection limits for an axial-vector (vector) interaction which are the strongest in the mass range from 25 to 45 (35 to 50) keV/c$^2$.

Design, construction and commissioning of the PandaX-30T liquid xenon management system

The PandaX-30T is a proposed next-generation experiment to study dark matter and neutrinos using a dual-phase time projection chamber with \textasciitilde30 tons of liquid xenon. An innovative xenon handling subsystem of the PandaX-30T, the First-X, is described in this paper. The First-X is developed to handle liquid xenon safely and efficiently, including liquefying and long-term storing xenon without losses or contamination, and transferring cryogenic liquid xenon between the storage module and the detector safely and effectively without venting out. The storage module of the First-X is five specially designed double-walled cylindrical vessels (Center Tanks) equipped with three heat exchangers each for pressure and temperature regulation. Each Center Tank is designed with a vacuum and multi-layer insulation and a maximum allowable working pressure of 7.1 MPa, allowing 6 tons of xenon to be stored at 165--178 K at 0.1--0.2 MPa in the liquid phase or up to 300 K and up to 6.95 MPa in the supercritical phase. High-pressure storage (\textgreater0.2 MPa) only occurs in case of long-term detector shutdown or lack of nitrogen, ensuring no-loss storage of 6 tons of xenon in the range 178--300 K. In this paper, the thermophysical performances of the First-X and innovative scenarios to conduct non-vented cryogen transportation were experimentally conducted and reported using liquid argon. The non-vented cryogenic liquid filling and pump-assisted cryogenic liquid recovery have been conducted with liquid argon at a mass flow rate of 1390 kg/h, corresponding to a xenon mass flow rate of 2140 kg/h. Compared with the PandaX-4T, the transportation of xenon between the detector and the storage module is conducted in the liquid phase rather than in the gaseous phase, and the filling rate and the recovery rate are increased by approximately 50 times and 30 times, respectively.

A First Search for Solar $^8$B Neutrino in the PandaX-4T Experiment using Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering

A search for interactions from solar $^8$B neutrinos elastically scattering off xenon nuclei using PandaX-4T commissioning data is reported. The energy threshold of this search is further lowered compared with the previous search for dark matter, with various techniques utilized to suppress the background that emerges from data with the lowered threshold. A blind analysis is performed on the data with an effective exposure of 0.48 tonne$\cdot$year, and no significant excess of events is observed. Among results obtained using the neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering, our results give the best constraint on the solar $^8$B neutrino flux. We further provide a more stringent limit on the cross section between dark matter and nucleon in the mass range from 3 to 9 GeV/c$^2$.

Measurement of Double Beta Decay Half-life of $^{136}$Xe with the PandaX-4T Detector

Precise measurement of two-neutrino double beta decay (DBD) half-life is an important step for the searches of Majorana neutrinos with neutrinoless double beta decay. We report the measurement of DBD half-life of $^{136}$Xe using the PandaX-4T dual-phase Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with 3.7-tonne natural xenon and the first 94.9-day physics data release. The background model in the fiducial volume is well constrained in situ by events in the outer active region. With a $^{136}$Xe exposure of 15.5 kg-year, we establish the half-life as $2.27 \pm 0.03 (stat.)\pm 0.10 (syst.)\times 10^{21}$ years. This is the first DBD half-life measurement with natural xenon and demonstrates the physics capability of a large-scale liquid xenon TPC in the field of rare event searches.

Accelerated Light Dark Matter-Earth Inelastic Scattering in Direct Detection

The Earth-stopping effect plays a crucial role in the direct detection of sub-GeV dark matter. Besides the elastic scattering process, the quasi-elastic and deep inelastic scatterings between dark matter and nucleus that are usually neglected can dominate the interaction, especially in the accelerated dark matter scenarios, which may affect the dark matter detection sensitivity significantly for the underground experiments. We calculate such inelastic scattering contributions in the Earth-stopping effect and illustrate the essence of our argument with the atmospheric dark matter. With the available data, we find that the resulting upper limits on the atmospheric dark matter-nucleus scattering cross-section can differ from those only considering the elastic scattering process by one order of magnitude.

First search for the absorption of fermionic dark matter with the PandaX-4T experiment

Compared with the signature of dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei, the absorption of fermionic dark matter by nuclei opens up a new searching channel for light dark matter with a characteristic monoenergetic signal. In this Letter, we explore the $95.0$-day data from the PandaX-4T commissioning run and report the first dedicated searching results of the fermionic dark matter absorption signal through a neutral current process. No significant signal was found, and the lowest limit on the dark matter-nucleon interaction cross section is set to be $1.5\times10^{-50}$ cm$^2$ for a fermionic dark matter mass of $40$ MeV/$c^2$ with 90\% confidence level.

Uniqueness of positive solutions to the higher order Brezis-Nirenberg problem

In this paper, we study the higher order Brezis-Nirenberg problem under the Navier boundary condition \be\label{eq} \begin{cases} (-Δ)^m u=\varepsilon u+u^{p} & \text { in }\, Ω, \\ u>0 & \text { in }\, Ω, \\ u=-Δu=\cdots=(-Δ)^{m-1} u=0 & \text { on }\, \partial Ω, \end{cases} \ee where $Ω$ is a strictly convex smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n \geq 4m$, $m \in \mathbb{N}_{+}$, $\varepsilon\in (0,λ_{1})$, $λ_{1}$ is the first Navier eigenvalue for $(-Δ)^{m}$ in $Ω$, and $p=\frac{n+2m}{n-2m}$. We prove that the solutions of \eqref{eq} are unique if either $\varepsilon$ close to $λ_1$ or $\varepsilon$ close to 0 and $Ω$ satisfies some symmetry assumptions. The proof is mainly based on our previous works about the blow up analysis and compactness result for solutions to higher order critical elliptic equations and the asymptotic behavior of solutions to \eqref{eq}.

Unified results of compactness and existence for prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem

In this paper we study the problem of prescribing fractional $Q$-curvature of order $2σ$ for a conformal metric on the standard sphere $\Sn$ with $σ\in (0,n/2)$ and $n\geq2$. Compactness and existence results are obtained in terms of the flatness order $β$ of the prescribed curvature function $K$. Making use of integral representations and perturbation result, we develop a unified approach to obtain these results when $β\in [n-2σ,n)$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$. This work generalizes the corresponding results of Jin-Li-Xiong [Math. Ann. 369: 109--151, 2017] for $β\in (n-2σ,n)$.

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background in the PandaX-4T experiment

Neutron-induced nuclear recoil background is critical to the dark matter searches in the PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. This paper studies the feature of neutron background in liquid xenon and evaluates their contribution in the single scattering nuclear recoil events through three methods. The first method is fully Monte Carlo simulation based. The last two are data-driven methods that also use the multiple scattering signals and high energy signals in the data, respectively. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data with an exposure of 0.63 tonne-year, all these methods give a consistent result that there are $1.15\pm0.57$ neutron-induced background in dark matter signal region within an approximated nuclear recoil energy window between 5 and 100 keV.

Study of background from accidental coincidence signals in the PandaX-II experiment

The PandaX-II experiment employed a 580kg liquid xenon detector to search for the interactions between dark matter particles and the target xenon atoms. The accidental coincidences of isolated signals result in a dangerous background which mimic the signature of the dark matter. We performed a detailed study on the accidental coincidence background in PandaX-II, including the possible origin of the isolated signals, the background level and corresponding background suppression method. With a boosted-decision-tree algorithm, the accidental coincidence background is reduced by 70% in the dark matter signal region, thus the sensitivity of dark matter search at PandaX-II is improved.

A search for two-component Majorana dark matter in a simplified model using the full exposure data of PandaX-II experiment

In the two-component Majorana dark matter model, one dark matter particle can scatter off the target nuclei, and turn into a slightly heavier component. In the framework of a simplified model with a vector boson mediator, both the tree-level and loop-level processes contribute to the signal in direct detection experiment. In this paper, we report the search results for such dark matter from PandaX-II experiment, using total data of the full 100.7 tonne$\cdot$day exposure. No significant excess is observed, so strong constraints on the combined parameter space of mediator mass and dark matter mass are derived. With the complementary search results from collider experiments, a large range of parameter space can be excluded.

A weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type trace inequality on Riemannian manifolds

Given $(M, g)$ a smooth compact $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary $\partial M$. Let $ρ$ be a defining function of $M$ and $σ\in(0,1)$. In this paper we study a weighted Sobolev-Poincaré type trace inequality corresponding to the embedding of $W^{1,2}(ρ^{1-2 σ}, M) \hookrightarrow L^{p}(\partial M)$, where $p=\frac{2 n}{n-2 σ}$. More precisely, under some assumptions on the manifold, we prove that there exists a constant $B>0$ such that, for all $u \in W^{1,2}(ρ^{1-2σ}, M)$, $$ \Big(\int_{\partial M}|u|^{p} \,\ud s_{g}\Big)^{2/p} \leq μ^{-1} \int_{M} ρ^{1-2 σ}|\nabla_{g} u|^{2} \,\ud v_{g}+B \Big|\int_{\partial M} |u|^{p-2}u \,\ud s_{g}\Big|^{2/(p-1)}. $$ This inequality is sharp in the sense that $μ^{-1}$ cannot be replaced by any smaller constant. Moreover, unlike the classical Sobolev inequality, $μ^{-1}$ does not depend on $n$ and $σ$ only, but depends on the manifold.

Low Radioactive Material Screening and Background Control for the PandaX-4T Experiment

PandaX-4T is a ton-scale dark matter direct detection experiment using a dual-phase TPC technique at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Various ultra-low background technologies have been developed and applied to material screening for PandaX-4T, including HPGe gamma spectroscopy, ICP-MS, NAA, radon emanation measurement system, krypton assay station, and alpha detection system. Low background materials were selected to assemble the detector. Surface treatment procedures were investigated to further suppress radioactive background. Combining measured results and Monte Carlo simulation, the total material background rates of PandaX-4T in the energy region of 1-25 keV$\rm{}_{ee}$ are estimated to be (9.9 $\pm$ 1.9) $\times \ 10^{-3}$ mDRU for electron recoil and (2.8 $\pm$ 0.6) $\times \ 10^{-4}$ mDRU for nuclear recoil. In addition, $^{nat}$Kr in the detector is estimated to be <8 ppt.

Compactness and existence results of the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem on $\mathbb{S}^n$

This paper is devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem of order $2σ$ on $n$-dimensional standard sphere when $ n-2σ=2$, $σ=1+m/2,$ $m\in \mathbb{N}_{+}.$ The compactness results are novel and optimal. In addition, we prove a degree-counting formula of all solutions to achieve the existence. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Furthermore, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at any finite distinct location can be constructed. It is worth noting that our results include the case of multiple harmonic.
