Bulk Fermi surfaces of the Dirac type-II semimetallic candidate NiTe2

Here, we present a study on the Fermi-surface of the Dirac type-II semi-metallic candidate NiTe$_2$ via the temperature and angular dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measured in single-crystals grown through Te flux. In contrast to its isostructural compounds like PtSe$_2$, band structure calculations predict NiTe$_2$ to display a tilted Dirac node very close to its Fermi level that is located along the $Γ$ to A high symmetry direction within its first Brillouin zone (FBZ). The angular dependence of the dHvA frequencies is found to be in agreement with the first-principle calculations when the electronic bands are slightly shifted with respect to the Fermi level ($\varepsilon_F$), and therefore provide support for the existence of a Dirac type-II node in NiTe$_2$. Nevertheless, we observed mild disagreements between experimental observations and density Functional theory calculations as, for example, nearly isotropic and light experimental effective masses. This indicates that the dispersion of the bands is not well captured by DFT. Despite the coexistence of Dirac-like fermions with topologically trivial carriers, samples of the highest quality display an anomalous and large, either linear or sub-linear magnetoresistivity. This suggests that Lorentz invariance breaking Dirac-like quasiparticles dominate the carrier transport in this compound.

Three-dimensional Ising Ferrimagnetism of Cr-Fe-Cr trimers in FeCr2Te4

We carried out a comprehensive study of magnetic critical behavior in single crystals of ternary chalcogenide FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ that undergoes a ferrimagnetic transition below $T_c$ $\sim$ 123 K. Detailed critical behavior analysis and scaled magnetic entropy change indicate a second-order ferrimagentic transition. Critical exponents $β= 0.30(1)$ with $T_c = 122.4(5)$ K, $γ= 1.22(1)$ with $T_c = 122.8(1)$ K, and $δ= 4.24(2)$ at $T_c$ $\sim$ 123 K suggest that the spins approach three-dimensional Ising ($β$ = 0.325, $γ$ = 1.24, and $δ$ = 4.82) model coupled with the attractive long-range interactions between spins that decay as $J(r)\approx r^{-4.88}$. Our results suggest that the ferrimagnetism in FeCr$_2$Te$_4$ is due to itinerant ferromagnetism among the antiferromagnetically coupled Cr-Fe-Cr trimers.

Topological phase transition and phonon-space Dirac topology surfaces in ZrTe$_5$

We use first-principles methods to reveal that in ZrTe$_5$, a layered van der Waals material like graphite, atomic displacements corresponding to five of the six zone-center A$_g$ (symmetry-preserving) phonon modes can drive a topological phase transition from strong to weak topological insulator with a Dirac semimetal state emerging at the transition, giving rise to a Dirac topology surface in the multi-dimensional space formed by the A$_g$ phonon modes. This implies that the topological phase transition in ZrTe$_5$ can be realized with many different settings of external stimuli that are capable of penetrating through the phonon-space Dirac surface without breaking the crystallographic symmetry. Furthermore, we predict that domains with effective mass of opposite signs can be created by laser pumping and will host Weyl modes of opposite chirality propagating along the domain boundaries. Studying phonon-space topology surfaces provides a new route to understanding and utilizing the exotic physical properties of ZrTe$_5$ and related quantum materials.

Multiple Dirac Nodes and Symmetry Protected Dirac Nodal Line in Orthorhombic $α$-RhSi

Owing to their chiral cubic structure, exotic multifold topological excitations have been predicted and recently observed in transition metal silicides like $β$-RhSi. Herein, we report that the topological character of RhSi is also observed in its orthorhombic $α$-phase which displays multiple types of Dirac nodes very close to the Fermi level ($\varepsilon_F$) with the near absence of topologically trivial carriers. We discuss the symmetry analysis, band connectivity along high-symmetry lines using group representations, the band structure, and the nature of the Dirac points and nodal lines occurring near $\varepsilon_F$. The de Haas-van Alphen effect (dHvA) indicates a Fermi surface in agreement with the calculations. We find an elliptically-shaped nodal line very close to $\varepsilon_F$ around and near the $S$-point on the $k_y-k_z$ plane that results from the intersection of two upside-down Dirac cones. The two Dirac points of the participating Kramers degenerate bands are only 5 meV apart, hence an accessible magnetic field might induce a crossing between the spin-up partner of the upper-Dirac cone and the spin-down partner of the lower Dirac cone, possibly explaining the anomalies observed in the magnetic torque.

A numerically exact study of Weyl superconductivity

We study the interplay of interactions and topology in a pseudo-spin Weyl system, obtained from a minimally modified Hubbard model, using the numerically exact auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method complemented by mean-field theory. We find that the pseudo-spin plays a key role in the pairing mechanism, and its effect is reflected in the structure of the pairing amplitude. An attractive on-site interaction leads to pairing between quasiparticles carrying opposite spin and opposite topological charge, resulting in the formation of real-spin singlet pairs that are a mixture of pseudo-spin singlet and pseudo-spin triplet. Our results provide a detailed characterization of the exotic pairing behavior in this system, and represent an important step towards a more complete understanding of superconductivity in the context of topological band structures, which will help guide searches for topological superconductivity in real materials and ultracold atoms.

Importance of electron correlations in understanding the photo-electron spectroscopy and the Weyl character of MoTe$_2$

We study the role of electron correlations in the presumed type II Weyl semimetallic candidate $γ$-MoTe$_2$ by employing density functional theory (DFT) where the on-site Coulomb repulsion (Hubbard U) for the Mo 4$d$ states is included within the DFT+U scheme. We show that pure DFT calculations fail to describe important features of the light-polarization dependence of the angular resolved photoemission intensity which can be accounted for by including the role of the Hubbard U. At the same time, while pure DFT calculations cannot explain the angular dependence of the Fermi surface as revealed by quantum oscillation experiments (a fact which had raised doubt about the presence of the Weyl physics in $γ$-MoTe$_2$), inclusion of such on-site Coulomb repulsion can. We find that, while the number of Weyl points (WPs) and their position in the Brillouin Zone change as a function of U, a pair of such WPs very close to the Fermi level survive the inclusion of these important corrections. Our calculations suggest that the Fermi surface of $γ$-MoTe$_2$ is in the vicinity of a correlations-induced Lifshitz transition which can be probed experimentally and its interplay with the Weyl physics might be intriguing.
