Optical Spectral Weight, Phase Stiffness and Tc Bounds for Trivial and Topological Flat Band Superconductors

We present exact results that give insight into how interactions lead to transport and superconductivity in a flat band where the electrons have no kinetic energy. We obtain bounds for the optical spectral weight for flat band superconductors, that lead to upper bounds for the superfluid stiffness and the 2D $T_c$. We focus on on-site attraction $|U|$ on the Lieb lattice with trivial flat bands and on the $π$-flux model with topological flat bands. For trivial flat bands, the low-energy optical spectral weight $\widetilde{D}_\text{low} \leq \widetilde{n} |U| Ω/2$ with $\widetilde{n} = \min\left(n,2-n\right)$, where $n$ is the flat band density and $Ω$ the Marzari-Vanderbilt spread of the Wannier functions (WFs). We also obtain a lower bound involving the quantum metric. For topological flat bands, with an obstruction to localized WFs respecting all symmetries, we again obtain an upper bound for $D_{\rm low}$ linear in $|U|$. We discuss the insights obtained from our bounds by comparing them with mean-field and quantum Monte-Carlo results.

Strange metal behavior of the Hall angle in twisted bilayer graphene

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with interlayer twist angles near the magic angle $\approx 1.08^{\circ}$ hosts flat bands and exhibits correlated states including Mott-like insulators, superconductivity and magnetism. Here we report combined temperature-dependent transport measurements of the longitudinal and Hall resistivities in close to magic-angle TBG. While the observed longitudinal resistivity follows linear temperature $T$ dependence consistent with previous reports, the Hall resistance shows an anomalous $T$ dependence with the cotangent of the Hall angle cot $Θ{_H} \propto T^2$. Boltzmann theory for quasiparticle transport predicts that both the resistivity and cot $Θ{_H}$ should have the same $T$ dependence, contradicting the observed behavior. This failure of quasiparticle-based theories is reminiscent of other correlated strange metals such as cuprates.

Upper bounds on the superfluid stiffness and superconducting $T_c$: Applications to twisted-bilayer graphene and ultra-cold Fermi gases

Understanding the material parameters that control the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is a problem of fundamental importance. In many novel superconductors, phase fluctuations determine $T_c$, rather than the collapse of the pairing amplitude. We derive rigorous upper bounds on the superfluid phase stiffness for multi-band systems, valid in any dimension. This in turn leads to an upper bound on $T_c$ in two dimensions (2D), which holds irrespective of pairing mechanism, interaction strength, or order-parameter symmetry. Our bound is particularly useful for the strongly correlated regime of low-density and narrow-band systems, where mean field theory fails. For a simple parabolic band in 2D with Fermi energy $E_F$, we find that $k_BT_c \leq E_F/8$, an exact result that has direct implications for the 2D BCS-BEC crossover in ultra-cold Fermi gases. Applying our multi-band bound to magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG), we find that band structure results constrain the maximum $T_c$ to be close to the experimentally observed value. Finally, we discuss the question of deriving rigorous upper bounds on $T_c$ in 3D.

New results on the exotic galaxy `Speca' and discovering many more Specas with RAD@home network

We present the first report on an innovative new project named "RAD@home", a citizen-science research collaboratory built on free web-services like Facebook, Google, Skype, NASA Skyview, NED, TGSS etc.. This is the first of its kind in India, a zero-funded, zero-infrastructure, human-resource network to educate and directly involve in research, hundreds of science-educated under-graduate population of India, irrespective of their official employment and home-location with in the country. Professional international collaborators are involved in follow up observation and publication of the objects discovered by the collaboratory. We present here ten newly found candidate episodic radio galaxies, already proposed to GMRT, and ten more interesting cases which includes, bent-lobe radio galaxies located in new Mpc-scale filaments, likely tracing cosmological cluster accretion from the cosmic web. Two new Speca-like rare spiral-host large radio galaxies have also been been reported here. Early analyses from our follow up observations with the Subaru and XMM-Newton telescopes have revealed that Speca is likely a new entry to the cluster and is a fast rotating, extremely massive, star forming disk galaxy. Speca-like massive galaxies with giant radio lobes, are possibly remnants of luminous quasars in the early Universe or of first supermassive black holes with in first masssve galaxies. As discoveries of Speca-like galaxies did not require new data from big telescopes, but free archival radio-optical data, these early results demonstrate the discovery potential of RAD@home and how it can help resource-rich professionals, as well as demonstrate a model of academic-growth for resource-poor people in the underdeveloped regions via Internet.
