XUV Transmission Spectroscopy Using a Tabletop High-Harmonic Source

High-harmonic generation (HHG) provides a coherent ultrashort-pulse light source in the extreme- ultraviolet (XUV) region and has potential applications in time-resolved spectroscopy and materials characterization. In this study, we constructed an HHG system using a Yb:KGW laser system (PHAROS, Light Conversion) as the driving source and Ar gas as the nonlinear medium. High-order harmonics were observed up to a photon energy of 70.6 eV, corresponding to the 59th harmonic order. As an application of the developed XUV source, we measured the transmission of a Mg thin film and a Si3N4 membrane. In addition, the surface chemical state of the Mg thin film was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results were compared with the transmission measured using the HHG source. This comparison was used to examine the relationship between the surface condition, including surface oxidation, and the XUV transmission of the Mg thin film. These results demonstrate the applicability of the developed Ar-based HHG source to the characterization of thin-film transmission in the XUV spectral region.

Dependence of energy relaxation and vibrational coherence on the location of light-harvesting chromoproteins in photosynthetic antenna protein complexes

Phycobilisomes are antenna protein complexes in cyanobacteria and red algae. In phycobilisomes, energy transfer is unidirectional with an extremely high quantum efficiency close to unity. We investigate intraprotein energy relaxation and quantum coherence of constituent chromoproteins of allophycocyanin (APC) and two kinds of C-phycocyanin (CPC) in phycobilisomes using two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2D-ES). These chromoproteins have similar adjacent pairs of pigments $α$84 and $β$84, which are excited to delocalized exciton states. However, the kinetics and coherence of exciton states are significantly different from each other. Even CPCs with almost the same molecular structure display significantly different spectra and kinetics when the locations in the phycobilisome are different. This difference may be one of the key mechanisms for the efficient and unidirectional energy transfer in phycobilisomes. We observe low-frequency coherent vibrational motion of approximately 200 cm$^{-1}$ with large amplitude and a decay time of 200 fs. The wave packet motion involving energy relaxation and oscillatory motions on the potential energy surface of the exciton state is clearly visualized using beat-frequency-resolved 2D-ES.

Beat-frequency-resolved two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy: disentangling vibrational coherences in artificial fluorescent proteins with sub-10-fs visible laser pulses

We perform a beat-frequency-resolved analysis for two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy using a high-speed and stable 2D electronic spectrometer and few-cycle visible laser pulses to disentangle the vibrational coherences in an artificial fluorescent protein. We develop a highly stable ultrashort light source that generates 5.3-fs visible pulses with a pulse energy of 4.7 uJ at a repetition rate of 10 kHz using multi-plate pulse compression and laser filamentation in a gas cell. The above-5.3-fs laser pulses together with a high-speed multichannel detector enable us to measure a series of 2D electronic spectra, which are resolved in terms of beat frequency related to vibrational coherence. We successfully extract the discrete vibrational peaks behind the inhomogeneous broadening in the absorption spectra and the vibrational quantum beats of the excited electronic state behind the strong stationary signal in the typical 2D electronic spectra.

100-mJ class, sub-two-cycle, carrier-envelope phase-stable dual-chirped optical parametric amplification

Based on the dual-chirped optical parametric amplification and type-I BiB$_3$O$_6$(BiBO) crystals, the generation of $>$100 mJ, 10.4 fs, 10 Hz, carrier-to-envelope phase (CEP)-stable laser pulses, which are centered at 1.7 $μ$m, is demonstrated; it produces a peak power of 10 TW. CEP-dependent high harmonic generation is implemented to confirm the sub-two-cycle pulse duration and CEP stabilization of infrared (IR) laser pulses. As far as we know, the obtained pulse energy and peak power represent the highest values for sub-two-cycle CEP-stable IR optical parametric amplification. Additionally, the prospects of achieving high-energy water window isolated attosecond pulses via our developed laser source are discussed.

Optical parametric amplification of phase-stable terahertz-to-midinfrared pulses studied in the time domain

We report optical parametric amplification (OPA) of low-frequency infrared pulses in the intermediate region between terahertz (THz) frequency and mid-infrared (MIR), i.e., from 16.9 to 44.8 THz. The 255-fs laser output of the Yb:KGW regenerative amplifier is compressed to 11-fs pulses using a multi-plate broadening scheme, which generates THz-to-MIR pulses with a spectrum extending to approximately 50 THz by intra-p1ulse differential frequency generation (DFG) in GaSe. The THz-to-MIR pulses are further amplified using a two-stage OPA in GaSe. The temporal dynamics and photocarrier effects during OPA are characterized in the time domain. Owing to the intra-pulse DFG, the long-term phase drift of the THz-to-MIR pulses after two-stage OPA is as small as 16 mrad during a 6-h operation without any active feedback. Our scheme using the intra-pulse DFG and post-amplification proposes a new route to intense THz-to-MIR light sources with extreme phase stability.

High-harmonic generation in GaAs beyond the perturbative regime

We experimentally study the field-intensity dependence of high-harmonic generation in bulk gallium arsenide in reflection geometry. We find the oscillatory behavior at high fields where a perturbative scaling law no longer holds. By constructing a theoretical framework based on the Luttinger-Kohn model, we succeed in reproducing the observed oscillatory behavior. The qualitative agreement between the experiment and theory indicates that field-induced dynamic band modification is crucial in the nonperturbative regime. We consider the origin of the oscillatory behavior in terms of dynamical localization based on the Floquet subband picture.

Real-time observation of electronic, vibrational, and rotational dynamics in nitric oxide with attosecond soft X-ray pulses at 400 eV

Photoinduced quantum dynamics in molecules have hierarchical temporal structures with different energy scales that are associated with electron and nuclear motions. Femtosecond-to-attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) using high-harmonic generation (HHG) with a photon energy below 300 eV has been a powerful tool to observe such electron and nuclear dynamics in a table-top manner. However, comprehensive measurements of the electronic, vibrational, and rotational molecular dynamics have not yet been achieved. Here, we demonstrate HHG-based TAS at the nitrogen K-edge (400 eV) for the first time, and observe all the electronic, vibrational, and rotational degrees of freedom in a nitric oxide molecule at attosecond to sub-picosecond time scales. This method of employing core-to-valence transitions offers an all-optical approach to reveal complete molecular dynamics in photochemical reactions with element and electronic state specificity.

Photo-induced Superconducting State with Long-lived Disproportionate Band Filling in FeSe

Photo-excitation is a very powerful way to instantaneously drive a material into a novel quantum state without any fabrication, and variable ultrafast techniques have been developed to observe how electron-, lattice-, and spin-degrees of freedom change. One of the most spectacular phenomena is photo-induced superconductivity, and it has been suggested in cuprates that the transition temperature Tc can be enhanced from original Tc with significant lattice modulations. Here we show another photo-induced high-Tc superconducting state in the iron-based superconductor FeSe with semi-metallic hole and electron bands. The transient electronic state in the entire Brillouin zone is directly observed by the time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy using extreme ultraviolet pulses obtained from high harmonic generation. Our results of dynamical behaviors on timescales from 50 fs to 800 ps consistently support the favorable superconducting state after photo-excitation well above Tc. This finding demonstrates that multiband iron-based superconductors emerge as an alternative candidate for photo-induced superconductors.

Photo-induced semimetallic states realised in electron-hole coupled insulators

Using light to manipulate materials into desired states is one of the goals in condensed matter physics, since light control can provide ultrafast and environmentally-friendly photonics devices. However, it is generally difficult to realise a photo-induced phase which is not merely a higher entropy phase corresponding to a high-temperature phase at equilibrium. Here, we report realization of photo-induced insulator-to-metal transitions in Ta2Ni(Se1-xSx)5 including the excitonic insulator phase using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. From the dynamic properties of the system, we determine that screening of excitonic correlations plays a key role in the timescale of the transition to the metallic phase, which supports the existence of an excitonic-insulator phase at equilibrium. The non-equilibrium metallic state observed unexpectedly in the direct-gap excitonic insulator opens up a new avenue to optical band engineering in electron-hole coupled systems.

Antiphase Fermi-surface modulations accompanying displacement excitation in a parent compound of iron-based superconductors

We investigate the transient electronic structure of BaFe2As2, a parent compound of iron-based superconductors, by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In order to probe the entire Brillouin zone, we utilize extreme ultraviolet photons and observe photoemission intensity oscillation with the frequency of the A1g phonon which is antiphase between the zone-centered hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) and zone-cornered electron FSs. We attribute the antiphase behavior to the warping in one of the zone-centered hole FSs accompanying the displacement of the pnictogen height, and find that this displacement is the same direction as that induced by substitution of P for As, where superconductivity is induced by a structural modification without carrier doping in this system.
