Orbital degeneracy and Mott transition in Mo pyrochlore oxides

We present our theoretical results on an effective two-band double-exchange model on a pyrochlore lattice for understanding intricate phase competition in Mo pyrochlore oxides. The model includes the twofold degeneracy of $e_g'$ orbitals under trigonal field splitting, the interorbital Coulomb repulsion, the Hund's-rule coupling between itinerant $e_g'$ electrons and localized $a_{1g}$ spins, and the superexchange antiferromagnetic interaction between the $a_{1g}$ spins. By Monte Carlo simulation with treating the Coulomb repulsion at an unrestricted-type mean-field level, we obtain the low-temperature phase diagram as functions of the Coulomb repulsion and the superexchange interaction. The results include four dominant phases with characteristic spin and orbital orders and the metal-insulator transitions among them. The insulating region is characterized by a `ferro'-type orbital ordering of the $e_g'$ orbitals along the local $<111>$ axis, irrespective of the spin ordering.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the formation of molecular polarizations and the antiferroelectric ordering in squaric acid crystals

Effects of geometrical frustration and quantum fluctuation are theoretically investigated for the proton ordering in a quasi-two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded system, squaric acid crystal. We elucidate the phase diagram for an effective model, the transverse-field Ising model on a frustrated checkerboard lattice, by using quantum Monte Carlo simulation. A crossover to liquidlike paraelectric state with well-developed molecular polarizations is identified, distinguishably from long-range ordering. Emergence of long-range order from the liquidlike state exhibits peculiar aspects originating from the lifting of quasi-macroscopic degeneracy, such as colossal enhancement of the transition temperature and a vanishingly small anomaly in the specific heat.

Spin model of magnetostrictions in multiferroic Mn perovskites

We theoretically study origins of the ferroelectricity in the multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, by constructing a realistic spin model including the spin-phonon coupling, which reproduces the entire experimental phase diagram in the plane of temperature and Mn-O-Mn bond angle for the first time. Surprisingly we reveal a significant contribution of the symmetric (S.S)-type magnetostriction to the ferroelectricity even in a spin-spiral-based multiferroic phase, which can be larger than the usually expected antisymmetric (SxS)-type contribution. This explains well the nontrivial behavior of the electric polarization. We also predict the noncollinear deformation of the E-type spin structure and a wide coexisting regime of the E and spiral states, which resolve several experimental puzzles.

Theory of magnetoelectric resonance in two-dimensional $S=3/2$ antiferromagnet ${\rm Ba_2CoGe_2O_7}$ via spin-dependent metal-ligand hybridization mechanism

We investigate magnetic excitations in an $S=3/2$ Heisenberg model representing two-dimensional antiferromagnet ${\rm Ba_2CoGe_2O_7}$. In terahertz absorption experiment of the compound, Goldstone mode as well as novel magnetic excitations, conventional magnetic resonance at 2 meV and both electric- and magnetic-active excitation at 4 meV, have been observed. By introducing a hard uniaxial anisotropy term $Λ(S^z)^2$, three modes can be explained naturally. We also indicate that, via the spin-dependent metal-ligand hybridization mechanism, the 4 meV excitation is an electric-active mode through the coupling between spin and electric-dipole. Moreover, at 4 meV excitation, an interference between magnetic and electric responses emerges as a cross correlated effect. Such cross correlation effects explain the non-reciprocal linear directional dichroism observed in ${\rm Ba_2CoGe_2O_7}$.

Theory of magnetic switching of ferroelectricity in spiral magnets

We propose a microscopic theory for magnetic switching of electric polarization (P) in the spin-spiral multiferroics by taking TbMnO3 and DyMnO3 as examples. We reproduce their phase diagrams under a magnetic field H_ex by Monte-Carlo simulation of an accurate spin model and reveal that competition among the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, spin anisotropy, and spin exchange is controlled by the applied H_ex, resulting in magnetic transitions accompanied by reorientation or vanishing of P. We also discuss the relevance of the proposed mechanisms to many other multiferroics such as LiCu2O2, MnWO4, and Ni3V2O4

Electronic phase separation in the pyrochlore double-exchange model

Electronic phase separation and related inhomogeneity is ubiquitously seen in strongly-correlated systems. A typical example is found between ferromagnetic metal and antiferromagnetic insulator in CMR manganese oxides. Here we demonstrate that the geometrical frustration brings distinctive aspects into the phase separation phenomena. From Monte Carlo simulation and a simple energy comparison for the pyrochlore double-exchange model, we show that such phase separation takes place between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic metals. We discuss the relevance of our results to a spin-glassy metallic phase found in Mo pyrochlore oxides under external pressure.

Roles of Bond Alternation in Magnetic Phase Diagram of RMnO3

In order to investigate nature of the antiferromagnetic structures in perovskite RMnO3, we study a Heisenberg J1-J2 model with bond alternation using analytical and numerical approaches. The magnetic phase diagram which includes incommensurate spiral states and commensurate collinear states is reproduced. We discuss that the magnetic structure with up-up-down-down spin configuration (E-type structure) and the ferroelectricity emerge cooperatively to stabilize this phase. Magnetoelastic couplings are crucial to understand the magnetic and electric phase diagram of RMnO3.

Ferromagnetic transition in the double-exchange model on the pyrochlore lattice

The double-exchange model, which has been extensively studied in the context of colossal magneto-resistance in perovskite manganese oxides, is known to exhibit a ferromagnetic metallic state at low temperatures because of the interplay between localized moments and itinerant electrons through the Hund's-rule coupling. Here we investigate numerically the ferromagnetic transition in the double-exchange model defined on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice as a simple model for ferromagnetic pyrochlore oxides. We demonstrate that the finite-size corrections are largely reduced by implementing averages over the twisted boundary conditions in the Monte Carlo simulation, which enables to estimate the ferromagnetic transition temperature in relatively small size clusters. The estimate is compared with that for the non-frustrated cubic lattice system.

Phase competition in the double-exchange model on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice

Competition between the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction and the super-exchange antiferromagnetic interaction is theoretically studied in the presence of geometrical frustration. As increasing the super-exchange interaction, the ferromagnetic metal becomes unstable, and is taken over by a cooperative paramagnetic metal, in sharp contrast with a discontinuous transition to the antiferromagnetic insulator in the absence of frustration. In the critical region, the system exhibits a peculiar temperature-independent behavior with highly incoherent transport, suggesting a large residual entropy at low temperatures. We discuss the relevance of the results to the pressure-induced behaviors in Mo pyrochlore oxides [S. Iguchi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 136407 (2009)].

Theory of electromagnon in the multiferroic Mn perovskites: Vital role of higher harmonic components of the spiral spin order

We study theoretically the electromagnon and its optical spectrum (OS) of the terahertz-frequency regime in the magnetic-spiral-induced multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, taking into account the elliptical deformation or the higher harmonics of the spiral spin configuration, which has been missed so far. A realistic spin Hamiltonian, which gives phase diagrams in agreement with experiments, resolves a long standing puzzle, i.e., the double-peak structure of the OS with a larger low-energy peak originating from magnon modes hybridized with the zone-edge state. We also predict the magnon branches associated with the electromagnon, which can be tested by neutron-scattering experiment.

Non-local network-excitation in the Ising antiferromagnet on the anisotropic triangular lattice

We study the Ising antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice which are interacting along three different directions via two $J$-bonds and one anisotropic $J'$-bond with $J' \ge J$. Although its finite temperature state has long been considered as simply disordered, we find a systematic generation of a ferromagnetic $J'$-bonds named "good defects" each carrying the energy $2δ_J\equiv 2(J'-J)$. They exhibit an eminent correlation which is regarded as a network or a soft lattice. The specific heat shows a universal peak at $T^* \sim δ_J$ and the corresponding energy follows the activation type of temperature-dependence with an excitation gap $2δ_J$. Energetics and the crossover between this particular two-dimensional state and the other disordered or one-dimensional states are discussed.

Microscopic Model and Phase Diagrams of the Multiferroic Perovskite Manganites

Orthorhombically distorted perovskite manganites, RMnO3 with R being a trivalent rare-earth ion, exhibit a variety of magnetic and electric phases including multiferroic (i.e. concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric) phases and fascinating magnetoelectric phenomena. We theoretically study the phase diagram of RMnO3 by constructing a microscopic spin model, which includes not only the superexchange interaction but also the single-ion anisotropy (SIA) and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (DMI). Analysis of this model using the Monte-Carlo method reproduces the experimental phase diagrams as functions of the R-ion radius, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e. the ab-plane spin cycloid with ferroelectric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. The orthorhombic lattice distortion or the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced by this distortion exquisitely controls the keen competition between these two phases through tuning the SIA and DMI energies. This leads to a lattice-distortion-induced reorientation of P from a to c in agreement with the experiments. We also discuss spin structures in the A-type antiferromagnetic state, those in the cycloidal spin states, origin and nature of the sinusoidal collinear spin state, and many other issues.

Mechanism of Lattice-Distortion-Induced Electric-Polarization Flop in the Multiferroic Perovskite Manganites

Magnetoelectric phase diagrams of the perovskite manganites, Eu1-xYxMnO3 and Gd1-xTbxMnO3, are theoretically studied. We first construct a microscopic model, and then analyze the model using the Monte-Carlo method. We reproduce the diagrams, which contain two different multiferroic states, i.e., the ab-plane spin cycloid with electric polarization P//a and the bc-plane spin cycloid with P//c. We reveal that their competition originates from a conflict between the single-ion anisotropy and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction, which is controlled by the second-neighbor spin exchanges enhanced by the GdFeO3-type distortion. This leads to a P flop from a to c with increasing x in agreement with the experiments.

Spin Singlet State in Heptamers Emerging in Spinel Oxide AlV$_2$O$_4$

We present our theoretical results on the electronic state in vanadium spinel oxide AlV$_2$O$_4$. The material is a mixed-valent system with the average valence V$^{2.5+}$, and V cations constitute a frustrated pyrochlore structure. It shows a structural transition at $\sim 700$ K, leading to the formation of seven V-sites clusters -- heptamers. We study the electronic state of the heptamer by explicitly taking account of orbital degree of freedom as well as electron correlations. We show that the ground state of the heptamer for realistic parameters becomes spin-singlet because of strong $σ$-type bonding states of $t_{2g}$ orbitals. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in experiments is naturally understood by this singlet formation in heptamers. Our results indicate that in AlV$_2$O$_4$ orbital physics is relevant to stabilize a cluster-type singlet state instead of a previously proposed charge-ordered state with valence skipping.

Phase Diagram of Spinless Fermions on an Anisotropic Triangular Lattice at Half-filling

The strong coupling phase diagram of the spinless fermions on the anisotropic triangular lattice at half-filling is presented. The geometry of inter-site Coulomb interactions rules the phase diagram. Unconventional charge ordered phases are detected which are the recently reported pinball liquid and the striped chains. Both are induced by the quantum dynamics out of classical disordered states and afford extremely correlated metallic states and the particular domain wall-type of excitations, respectively. The disorder once killed by the quantum effect revives at the finite temperature, which is discussed in the terms of the organic $θ$-ET$_2X$.

Filling dependence of a new type of charge ordered liquid on a triangular lattice system

We study the recently reported characteristic gapless charge ordered state in a spinless fermion system on a triangular lattice under strong inter-site Coulomb interactions. In this state the charges are spontaneously divided into solid and liquid component, and the former solid part aligns in a Wigner crystal manner while the latter moves among them like a pinball. We show that such charge ordered liquid is stable over a wide range of filling, $1/3<n<2/3$, and examine its filling dependent nature.

Strong coupling theory of the spinless charges on the triangular lattices: possibility of a new quantum liquid

We propose a new type of charge liquid state in the spinless fermion system on a triangular lattice under strong inter-site Coulomb interactions, $V$. In the strong coupling limit ($t=0$), the ground state is classical and disordered due to geometrical frustration. The introduction of small t will drive the system to a partially ordered phase which we call a "pinball liquid". A possibly long range ordered Wigner crystal solid coexist with a liquid component which are moving around them like a pinball. This liquid is dominant over wide range of filling, even away from the regular triangle, and is also realized in the hard core boson systems. Relevance to the organic theta-ET_2X is discsussed.

Flat-Bands on Partial Line Graphs -- Systematic Method for Generating Flat-Band Lattice Structures

We introduce a systematic method for constructing a class of lattice structures that we call ``partial line graphs''.In tight-binding models on partial line graphs, energy bands with flat energy dispersions emerge. This method can be applied to two- and three-dimensional systems. We show examples of partial line graphs of square and cubic lattices. The method is useful in providing a guideline for synthesizing materials with flat energy bands, since the tight-binding models on the partial line graphs provide us a large room for modification, maintaining the flat energy dispersions.
