Charged Black Holes in String Theory with Gauss-Bonnet Correction in Various Dimensions

We study charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory with the dilaton field which is the low-energy effective theory of the heterotic string. The spacetime is D-dimensional and assumed to be static and spherically symmetric with the $(D-2)$-dimensional constant curvature space and asymptotically flat. The system of the basic equations is complex and the solutions are obtained numerically. We identify the allowed parameter region where the black hole solutions exist, and show configurations of the field functions in D=4 -- 6 and 10. We also show the relations of the physical quantities of the black holes such as the horizon radius, the mass, the temperature, and so on, and find several results. The forms of the allowed parameter regions are different depending on the dimension. There is no extreme black hole solution with T=0 that can be obtained by taking the limit of the non-extreme solutions within the parameter range we chose. Entropy of the black holes in the dilatonic theory is always larger than that in the non-dilatonic theory. Our analysis includes the higher order term of the dilaton field which is not in our previous works. Its effect remarkably appears in five dimensions and is given in the appendix. By our analysis it is found that the properties of the black hole solutions strongly depend on the dimension, charge, existence of the dilaton field. Hence both the detailed analyses of the individual systems and the investigations from the systematic point of view are important.

Beta Function and Asymptotic Safety in Three-dimensional Higher Derivative Gravity

We study the quantum properties of the three-dimensional higher derivative gravity. In particular we calculate the running of the gravitational and cosmological constants. The flow of these couplings shows that there exist both Gaussian and nontrivial fixed points in the theory, thus confirming that the theory is asymptotically safe. It is shown that the new massive gravity or $f(R)$ gravity in three dimensions do not correspond to the fixed point within the approximation that the coefficients of the higher curvature terms are not subject to the flow. The fixed point value of the cosmological constant is found to be gauge-independent, positive and small. We also find that if we start with Einstein term with negative sign, the fixed point only exists when the coefficient of the Einstein term has positive sign.

Unitarity versus Renormalizability of Higher Derivative Gravity in 3D

It has been suggested that new massive gravity with higher order terms in the curvature may be renormalizable and thus a candidate for renormalizable quantum gravity. We show that three-dimensional gravity that contains quadratic scalar curvature and Ricci tensor is renormalizable, but those theories with special relation between their coefficients including new massive gravity are not.

Hawking Radiation and Tunneling Mechanism for a New Class of Black Holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We study the Hawking radiation in a new class of black hole solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. The black hole has been argued to have vanishing mass and entropy, but finite Hawking temperature. To check if it really emits radiation, we analyse the Hawking radiation using the original method of quantization of scalar field in the black hole background and the quantum tunneling method, and confirm that it emits radiation at the Hawking temperature. A general formula is derived for the Hawking temperature and backreaction in the tunneling approach. Physical implications of these results are discussed.

A Complete Classification of Higher Derivative Gravity in 3D and Criticality in 4D

We study the condition that the theory is unitary and stable in three-dimensional gravity with most general quadratic curvature, Lorentz-Chern-Simons and cosmological terms. We provide the complete classification of the unitary theories around flat Minkowski and (anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. The analysis is performed by examining the quadratic fluctuations around these classical vacua. We also discuss how to understand critical condition for four-dimensional theories at the Lagrangian level.

Intersecting black branes in strong gravitational waves

We consider intersecting black branes with strong gravitational waves propagating along their worldvolume in the context of supergravity theories. Both near-horizon and space-filling gravitational wave modes are included in our ansatz. The equations of motion (originally, partial differential equations) are shown to reduce to ordinary differential equations, which include a Toda-like system. For special arrangements of intersecting black branes, the Toda-like system becomes integrable, permitting a more thorough analysis of the gravitational equations of motion.

Extended black holes in strong gravitational waves

We describe a large class of solutions in pure gravity, dilaton gravity and supergravity corresponding to extended higher-dimensional black holes with strong (non-linear) gravitational waves propagating along their worldvolume. For pure gravity, the extended black holes are higher-dimensional analogs of the point-like Schwarzschild black hole in four dimensions. For supergravity, they are non-extremal p-branes. The gravitational waves can be both space-filling and localized around the worldvolume of the extended black holes. The solutions we present contain a large number of arbitrary functions of the light-cone time describing the amplitudes of different non-linear gravitational wave modes.

AdS Black Hole Solution in Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity

We find that AdS spacetime with a non-trivial linear dilaton field is an exact solution in the effective action of string theory, which is described by gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet curvature terms coupled to a dilaton field in the string frame. The AdS radius is determined by the spacetime dimensions and the coupling constants of curvature corrections. We also construct the asymptotically AdS black hole solutions with a linear dilaton field numerically. We discuss the thermodynamical properties of those solutions. Extending the model to the case with the even-order higher Lovelock curvature terms, we also find the exact AdS spacetime with non-trivial dilaton. We further find a cosmological solution with a bounce of three space and a solitonic solution with a non-trivial dilaton field, which is regular everywhere and approaches an asymptotically AdS spacetime.

Dark Energy and QCD Ghost

It has been suggested that the dark energy that explains the observed accelerating expansion of the universe may arise due to the contribution to the vacuum energy of the QCD ghost in a time-dependent background. The argument uses a four-dimensional simplified model. In this paper, we put the discussion in more realistic model keeping all components of the QCD vector ghost and show that indeed QCD ghost produces dark energy proportional to the Hubble parameter $HΛ_{QCD}^3$ ($Λ_{QCD}$ is the QCD mass scale) which has the right magnitude $\sim (3\times 10^{-3}$ eV)$^4$.

Black Hole Solutions in String Theory with Gauss-Bonnet Curvature Correction

We present the black hole solutions and analyse their properties in the superstring effective field theory with the Gauss-Bonnet curvature correction terms. We find qualitative differences in our results from those obtained in the truncated model in the Einstein frame. The main difference in our model from the truncated one is that the existence of a turning point in the mass-area curve, the mass-entropy curve, and the mass-temperature curve in five and higher dimensions, where we expect a change of stability. We also find a mass gap in our model, where there is no black hole solution. In five dimensions, there exists a maximum black hole temperature and the temperature vanishes at the minimum mass, which is not found in the truncated model.

Cosmological intersecting brane solutions

The recent discovery of an explicit dynamical description of p-branes makes it possible to investigate the existence of intersection of such objects. We generalize the solutions depending on the overall transverse space coordinates and time to those which depend also on the relative transverse space and satisfy new intersection rules. We give classification of these dynamical intersecting brane solutions involving two branes, and discuss the application of these solutions to cosmology and show that these give Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological solutions. Finally, we construct the brane world models, using the (cut-)copy-paste method after compactifying the trivial spatial dimensions. We then find that interesting brane world models can be obtained from codimension-one branes and several static branes with higher codimensions. We also classify the behaviors of the brane world near the future/past singularity.

Dynamical p-branes with a cosmological constant

We present a class of dynamical solutions in a D-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to a dilaton, a form field strength, and a cosmological constant. We find that for any D due to the presence of a cosmological constant, the metric of solutions depends on a quadratic function of the brane world volume coordinates, and the transverse space cannot be Ricci flat except for the case of 1-branes. We then discuss the dynamics of 1-branes in a D-dimensional spacetime. For a positive cosmological constant, 1-brane solutions with D>4 approach the Milne universe in the far-brane region. On the other hand, for a negative cosmological constant, each 1-brane approaches the others as the time evolves from a positive value, but no brane collision occurs for D>4, since the spacetime close to the 1-branes eventually splits into the separate domains. In contrast, the D=3 case provides an example of colliding 1-branes. Finally, we discuss the dynamics of 0-branes and show that for D>2, they behave like the Milne universe after the infinite cosmic time has passed.

Dynamical solutions in the 3-Form Field Background in the Nishino-Salam-Sezgin Model

We investigate the dynamical 3-form flux compactifications and their implications for cosmology in our brane world in the six-dimensional Nishino-Salam-Sezgin model, which is usually referred to as the Salam-Sezgin model. We take the background of the 3-form field acting on the internal space and timelike dimensions without the U(1) gauge field strength. The first class of solutions we discuss is the dynamical generalization of the static solutions obtained recently. In this class, we find that the time evolution is restricted only in the azimuthal dimension of the internal space and not in the ordinary three-dimensional one, which does not give a cosmological evolution. The second class of solutions is obtained by exchanging the roles of the radial coordinate and the time coordinate from the assumptions in the first class. At the center of the internal space, there is a conical singularity which may be interpreted as our 3-brane world, but it is difficult to realize a warped structure in the direction of the ordinary 3-space. Except for the oscillating solutions, a dynamical evolution leads to expanding or contracting ordinary 3-space, depending on the choice of time direction. Furthermore, in the expanding solutions, there are decelerating and accelerating ones: In the latter solution, the evolution is sustained for a finite proper time and the scale factor of the 3-space diverges.

Horizon Thermodynamics and Gravitational Field Equations in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We explore the relationship between the first law of thermodynamics and gravitational field equation at a static, spherically symmetric black hole horizon in Hořava-Lifshtiz theory with/without detailed balance. It turns out that as in the cases of Einstein gravity and Lovelock gravity, the gravitational field equation can be cast to a form of the first law of thermodynamics at the black hole horizon. This way we obtain the expressions for entropy and mass in terms of black hole horizon, consistent with those from other approaches. We also define a generalized Misner-Sharp energy for static, spherically symmetric spacetimes in Hořava-Lifshtiz theory. The generalized Misner-Sharp energy is conserved in the case without matter field, and its variation gives the first law of black hole thermodynamics at black hole horizon.

Global Structure of Black Holes in String Theory with Gauss-Bonnet Correction in Various Dimensions

We study global structures of black hole solutions in Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term coupled to dilaton in various dimensions. In particular we focus on the problem whether the singularity is weakened due to the Gauss-Bonnet term and dilaton. We find that there appears the non-central singularity between horizon and the center in many cases, where the metric does not diverge but the Kretschmann invariant does diverge. Hence this is a singularity, but we find the singularity is much milder than the Schwarzschild solution and the non-dilatonic one. We discuss the origin of this "fat" singularity. In other cases, we encounter singularity at the center which is much stronger than the usual one. We find that our black hole solutions have three different types of the global structures; the Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-AdS and "regular AdS black hole" types.

Black Holes in Gravity with Conformal Anomaly and Logarithmic Term in Black Hole Entropy

We present a class of exact analytic and static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the semi-classical Einstein equations with Weyl anomaly. The solutions have two branches, one is asymptotically flat and the other asymptotically de Sitter. We study thermodynamic properties of the black hole solutions and find that there exists a logarithmic correction to the well-known Bekenstein-Hawking area entropy. The logarithmic term might come from non-local terms in the effective action of gravity theories. The appearance of the logarithmic term in the gravity side is quite important in the sense that with this term one is able to compare black hole entropy up to the subleading order, in the gravity side and in the microscopic statistical interpretation side.

Notes on Entropy Force in General Spherically Symmetric Spacetimes

In a recent paper [arXiv:1001.0785], Verlinde has shown that the Newton gravity appears as an entropy force. In this paper we show how gravity appears as entropy force in Einstein's equation of gravitational field in a general spherically symmetric spacetime. We mainly focus on the trapping horizon of the spacetime. We find that when matter fields are absent, the change of entropy associated with the trapping horizon indeed can be identified with an entropy force. When matter fields are present, we see that heat flux of matter fields also leads to the change of entropy. Applying arguments made by Verlinde and Smolin, respectively, to the trapping horizon, we find that the entropy force is given by the surface gravity of the horizon. The cases in the untrapped region of the spacetime are also discussed.
