Friedmann Equations from Entropic Force

In this note by use of the holographic principle together with the equipartition law of energy and the Unruh temperature, we derive the Friedmann equations of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe.

Supersymmetric Intersecting Branes in Time-dependent Backgrounds

We construct a fairy general family of supersymmetric solutions in time- and space-dependent backgrounds in general supergravity theories. One class of the solutions are intersecting brane solutions with factorized form of time- and space-dependent metrics, the second class are brane solutions in pp-wave backgrounds carrying spacetime-dependence, and the final class are the intersecting branes with more nontrivial spacetime-dependence, and their intersection rules are given. Physical properties of these solutions are discussed, and the relation to existing literature is also briefly mentioned. The number of remaining supersymmetries are identified for various configurations including single branes, D1-D5, D2-D6-branes with nontrivial dilaton, and their possible dual theories are briefly discussed.

Supersymmetric Intersecting Branes on the Waves

We construct a general family of supersymmetric solutions in time- and space-dependent wave backgrounds in general supergravity theories describing single and intersecting p-branes embedded into time-dependent dilaton-gravity plane waves of an arbitrary (isotropic) profile, with the brane world-volume aligned parallel to the propagation direction of the wave. We discuss how many degrees of freedom we have in the solutions. We also propose that these solutions can be used to describe higher-dimensional time-dependent "black holes", and discuss their property briefly.

Black Holes without Mass and Entropy in Lovelock Gravity

We present a class of new black hole solutions in $D$-dimensional Lovelock gravity theory. The solutions have a form of direct product $\mathcal{M}^m \times \mathcal{H}^{n}$, where $D=m+n$, $\mathcal{H}^n$ is a negative constant curvature space, and are characterized by two integration constants. When $m=3$ and 4, these solutions reduce to the exact black hole solutions recently found by Maeda and Dadhich in Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory. We study thermodynamics of these black hole solutions. Although these black holes have a nonvanishing Hawking temperature, surprisingly, the mass of these solutions always vanishes. While the entropy also vanishes when $m$ is odd, it is a constant determined by Euler characteristic of $(m-2)$-dimensional cross section of black hole horizon when $m$ is even. We argue that the constant in the entropy should be thrown away. Namely, when $m$ is even, the entropy of these black holes also should vanish. We discuss the implications of these results.

Global solutions for higher-dimensional stretched small black holes

Small black holes in heterotic string theory have vanishing horizon area at the supergravity level, but the horizon is stretched to the finite radius $AdS_2 \times S^{D-2}$ geometry once higher curvature corrections are turned on. This has been demonstrated to give good agreement with microscopic entropy counting. Previous considerations, however, were based on the classical local solutions valid only in the vicinity of the event horizon. Here we address the question of global existence of extremal black holes in the $D$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory with the Gauss-Bonnet term introducing a variable dilaton coupling $a$ as a parameter. We show that asymptotically flat black holes exist only in a bounded region of the dilaton couplings $0 < a < a_{\rm cr}$ where $a_{\rm cr}$ depends on $D$. For $D \geq 5$ (but not for $D = 4$) the allowed range of $a$ includes the heterotic string values. For $a > a_{\rm cr}$ numerical solutions meet weak naked singularities at finite radii $r = r_{\rm cusp}$ (spherical cusps), where the scalar curvature diverges as $|r - r_{\rm cusp}|^{-1/2}$. For $D \geq 7$ cusps are met in pairs, so that solutions can be formally extended to asymptotically flat infinity choosing a suitable integration variable. We show, however, that radial geodesics cannot be continued through the cusp singularities, so such a continuation is unphysical.

Generalized Misner-Sharp Energy in f(R) Gravity

We study generalized Misner-Sharp energy in $f(R)$ gravity in a spherically symmetric spacetime. We find that unlike the cases of Einstein gravity and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the existence of the generalized Misner-Sharp energy depends on a constraint condition in the $f(R)$ gravity. When the constraint condition is satisfied, one can define a generalized Misner-Sharp energy, but it cannot always be written in an explicit quasi-local form. However, such a form can be obtained in a FRW universe and for static spherically symmetric solutions with constant scalar curvature. In the FRW universe, the generalized Misner-Sharp energy is nothing but the total matter energy inside a sphere with radius $r$, which acts as the boundary of a finite region under consideration. The case of scalar-tensor gravity is also briefly discussed.

Black Holes in the Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory in Various Dimensions IV - Topological Black Holes with and without Cosmological Term

We study black hole solutions in the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term, the dilaton and a positive "cosmological constant" in various dimensions. Physically meaningful black holes with a positive cosmological term are obtained only for those in static spacetime with $(D-2)$-dimensional hyperbolic space of negative curvature and $D>4$. We construct such black hole solutions of various masses numerically in $D=5,6$ and 10 dimensional spacetime and discuss their properties. In spite of the positive cosmological constant the spacetime approach anti-de Sitter spacetime asymptotically. The black hole solutions exist for a certain range of the horizon radius, i.e., there are lower and upper bounds for the size of black holes. We also argue that it is quite plausible that there is no black hole solution for hyperbolic space in the case of no cosmological constant.

Thermodynamics of Black Holes in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

By using the canonical Hamiltonian method, we obtain the mass and entropy of the black holes with general dynamical coupling constant $λ$ in Hoř ava-Lifshitz Gravity. Regardless of whether the horizon is sphere, plane or hyperboloid, we find these black holes are thermodynamically stable in some parameter space and unstable phase also exists in other parameter space. The relation between the entropy and horizon area of the black holes has an additional coefficient depending on the coupling constant $λ$, compared to the $λ=1$ case. For $λ=1$, the well-known coefficient of one quarter is recovered in the infrared region.

Topological Black Holes in Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

We find topological (charged) black holes whose horizon has an arbitrary constant scalar curvature $2k$ in Hořava-Lifshitz theory. Without loss of generality, one may take $k=1,0$ and -1. The black hole solution is asymptotically AdS with a nonstandard asymptotic behavior. Using the Hamiltonian approach, we define a finite mass associated with the solution. We discuss the thermodynamics of the topological black holes and find that the black hole entropy has a logarithmic term in addition to an area term. We find a duality in Hawking temperature between topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz theory and Einstein's general relativity: the temperature behaviors of black holes with $k=1, 0$ and -1 in Hořava-Lifshitz theory are respectively dual to those of topological black holes with $k=-1, 0$ and 1 in Einstein's general relativity. The topological black holes in Hořava-Lifshitz theory are thermodynamically stable.

Dynamics of intersecting brane systems -- Classification and their applications --

We present dynamical intersecting brane solutions in higher-dimensional gravitational theory coupled to dilaton and several forms. Assuming the forms of metric, form fields, and dilaton field, we give a complete classification of dynamical intersecting brane solutions with/without M-waves and Kaluza-Klein monopoles in eleven-dimensional supergravity. We apply these solutions to cosmology and black holes. It is shown that these give FRW cosmological solutions and in some cases Lorentz invariance is broken in our world. If we regard the bulk space as our universe, we may interpret them as black holes in the expanding universe. We also discuss lower-dimensional effective theories and point out naive effective theories may give us some solutions which are inconsistent with the higher-dimensional Einstein equations.

Shear Viscosity from Gauss-Bonnet Gravity with a Dilaton Coupling

We calculate the shear viscosity of field theories with gravity duals of Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a non-trivial dilaton using AdS/CFT. We find that the dilaton filed has a non-trivial contribution to the ratio of shear viscosity over entropy density and after imposing causal constraint for the boundary field theory, the new lower bound $4/25π$, obtained from pure Gauss-Bonnet gravity, may have a small violation.

Black Holes in the Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory in Various Dimensions II -- Asymptotically AdS Topological Black Holes --

We study asymptotically AdS topological black hole solutions with k=0 (plane symmetric) in the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term, the dilaton and a "cosmological constant" in various dimensions. We derive the field equations for suitable ansatz for general D dimensions. We determine the parameter regions including dilaton couplings where such solutions exist and construct black hole solutions of various masses numerically in D=4,5,6 and 10 dimensional spacetime with (D-2)-dimensional hypersurface of zero curvature.

Black Holes in the Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory in Various Dimensions III -- Asymptotically AdS Black Holes with $k=\pm 1$ --

We study black hole solutions in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the dilaton and a negative ``cosmological constant''. We derive the field equations for the static spherically symmetric ($k=1$) and hyperbolically symmetric ($k=-1$) spacetime in general $D$ dimensions. The system has some scaling symmetries which are used in our analysis of the solutions. We find exact solutions, i.e., regular AdS solution for $k=1$ and a massless black hole solution for $k=-1$. Nontrivial asymptotically AdS solutions are obtained numerically in D=4 -- 6 and 10 dimensional spacetimes. For spherically symmetric solutions, there is the minimum horizon radius below which no solution exists in D=4 -- 6. However in D=10, there is not such lower bound but the solution continues to exist to zero horizon size. For hyperbolically symmetric solution, there is the minimum horizon radius in all dimensions. Our solution can be used for investigations of the boundary theory through AdS/CFT correspondence.

Black Holes in the Dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory in Various Dimensions I -- Asymptotically Flat Black Holes --

We study spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat black hole solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton, in various dimensions. We derive the field equations for suitable ansatz for general D dimensions and construct black hole solutions of various masses numerically in D=4,5,6 and 10 dimensional spacetime with (D-2)-dimensional hypersurface with positive constant curvature. A detailed comparison with the non-dilatonic solutions is made. We also examine the thermodynamic properties of the solutions. It is found that the dilaton has significant effects on the black hole solutions, and we discuss physical consequences.

Generic estimates for magnetic fields generated during inflation including Dirac-Born-Infeld theories

We estimate the strength of large-scale magnetic fields produced during inflation in the framework of Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) theories. This analysis is sufficiently general in the sense that it covers most of conformal symmetry breaking theories in which the electromagnetic field is coupled to a scalar field. In DBI theories there is an additional factor associated with the speed of sound, which allows a possibility to lead to an extra amplification of the magnetic field in a ultra-relativistic region. We clarify the conditions under which seed magnetic fields to feed the galactic dynamo mechanism at a decoupling epoch as well as present magnetic fields on galactic scales are sufficiently generated to satisfy observational bounds.

Cosmological Evolution of Dirac-Born-Infeld Field

We investigate the cosmological evolution of the system of a Dirac-Born-Infeld field plus a perfect fluid. We analyze the existence and stability of scaling solutions for the AdS throat and the quadratic potential. We find that the scaling solutions exist when the equation of state of the perfect fluid is negative and in the ultra-relativistic limit.

Entropy Function and Universality of Entropy-Area Relation for Small Black Holes

We discuss the entropy-area relation for the small black holes with higher curvature corrections by using the entropy function formalism and field redefinition method. We show that the entropy $S_{BH}$ of small black hole is proportional to its horizon area $A$. In particular we find a universal result that $S_{BH}=A/2G$, the ratio is two times of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy-area formula in many cases of physical interest. In four dimensions, the universal relation is always true irrespective of the coefficients of the higher-order terms if the dilaton couplings are the same, which is the case for string effective theory, while in five dimensions, the relation again holds irrespective of the overall coefficient if the higher-order corrections are in the GB combination. We also discuss how this result generalizes to known physically interesting cases with Lovelock correction terms in various dimensions, and possible implications of the universal relation.

Accelerating Cosmologies in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Theory with Dilaton

We study cosmological solutions in the low-energy effective heterotic string theory, which is the Einstein gravity with Gauss-Bonnet term and the dilaton. We show that the field equations are cast into an autonomous system for flat internal and external spaces, and derive all the fixed points in the system. We also examine the time evolution of the solutions and whether the solutions can give (transient) accelerated expansion of our four-dimensional space in the Einstein frame.
