Non-Hermitian Kondo effect in ultracold alkaline-earth atoms

We investigate the Kondo effect in an open quantum system, motivated by recent experiments with ultracold alkaline-earth(-like) atoms. Because of inelastic collisions and the associated atom losses, this system is described by a complex-valued Kondo interaction and provides a non-Hermitian extension of the Kondo problem. We show that the non-Hermiticity induces anomalous reversion of renormalization-group flows which violate the $g$-theorem due to non-unitarity and produce a quantum phase transition unique to non-Hermiticity. Furthermore, we exactly solve the non-Hermitian Kondo Hamiltonian using a generalized Bethe ansatz method and find the critical line consistent with the renormalization-group flow.

Interplay between charge, magnetic and superconducting order in a Kondo lattice with an attractive Hubbard interaction

We investigate the competition between superconductivity, charge-ordering, magnetic-ordering, and the Kondo effect in a heavy fermion $s$-wave superconductor described by a Kondo lattice model with an attractive on-site Hubbard interaction. The model is solved using the real-space dynamical mean field theory. For this purpose, we develop a numerical renormalization group (NRG) framework in Nambu space, which is used to solve the superconducting impurity problem. This extended NRG scheme also allows for SU(2) spin symmetry broken solutions, enabling us to examine the competition or cooperation between $s$-wave superconductivity and incommensurate spin-density waves (SDWs). At half filling, we find an intriguing phase where the magnetic ordering of the $f$-electrons lifts the degeneracy between the charge density wave (CDW) state and the superconducting state, leading to a strong suppression of superconductivity. In addition, the system may also become a half metal in this parameter regime. Away from half filling, the CDWs vanish and are replaced by superconductivity combined with incommensurate SDWs up to moderate Kondo couplings to the $f$-electrons. We find that both CDWs as well as superconductivity enhance magnetic ordering due to the suppression of Kondo screening.

Breakdown of topological Thouless pumping in the strongly interacting regime

We elucidate the mechanism for instability of topological Thouless pumping in strongly interacting systems from a viewpoint of symmetry-protected topological phases. If the protecting symmetries of the underlying topological phases change between noninteracting fermions and a bosonic system in the strong coupling limit, the symmetry protection argument enforces a gap closing and thereby predicts a breakdown of the topological pumping. We also demonstrate that, even in the weakly interacting regime where the bulk topological pumping is still robust, the interaction effects manifest themselves in the edge density profiles, leading to a unique feature of the pumping in open boundary conditions. Furthermore, an extension of the above results indicates that an analog of an interaction-induced phase of Weyl semimetals can be realized in the setup of the topological pumping. Our results provide a systematic understanding for the stability of topological pumping against strong interactions, to which the conventional perturbative argument cannot be applied.

Topological properties of magnetically ordered heavy-fermion systems in the presence of mirror symmetry

We explore topological states with magnetic order in heavy-fermion systems by taking account of a mirror symmetry.Although without spatial symmetry, there is no topological phase in the two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic phases at half filling, we demonstrate that a topological phase emerges in the presence of mirror symmetry. This is explicitly shown for a two-dimensional periodic Anderson model.Furthermore, our analysis around quarter filling shows that a half-metallic state emerges in the ferromagnetic phase, where a spin-selective gap opens, resulting in nontrivial properties characterized by a Chern number. In contrast to the previously proposed models, our scenario can apply even for spin nonconserving systems in the presence of spin-orbit coupling.

Spatial-Translation-Induced Discrete Time Crystals

A discrete time crystal is a phase unique to nonequilibrium systems, where discrete time translation symmetry is spontaneously broken. Most of conventional time crystals proposed so far rely on spontaneous breaking of on-site symmetries and their corresponding on-site symmetry operations. In this Letter, we propose a new time crystal dubbed "spatial-translation-induced discrete time crystal (STI-DTC)", which is realized by spatial translation and its symmetry breaking. Owing to the properties of spatial translation, in this new time crystal, various time crystal orders can emerge only by changing the filling but not changing the driving protocol. We demonstrate that local transport of charges or spins shows a nontrivial oscillation, enabling detection and applications of time crystal orders. Our proposal opens up a new avenue of realizing time crystal orders by spatial translation.

Non-Hermitian perspective of the band structure in heavy-fermion systems

We analyze a two-dimensional Kondo lattice model with special emphasis on non-Hermitian properties of the single-particle spectrum, following a recent proposal by Kozii and Fu. Our analysis based on the dynamical mean-field theory elucidates that the single-particle spectral weight shows the exceptional points (EPs). Correspondingly, the spectral weight exhibits the band touching, resulting in a structure similar to the "Fermi arc". Furthermore, we find an intriguing phenomenon arising from the periodicity of the lattice. The EPs generated by two distinct Dirac points merge and change into a hybrid point which vanishes as the exchange interaction is increased. Accordingly, the paramagnetic phase in the low temperature region shows a significant difference from non-interacting fermions: the imaginary part of the self-energy yields the "Fermi loop" without any defective points.

Magnetic states in a three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator

We theoretically study the magnetic phase diagram of a three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator by means of real-space dynamical mean field theory. We find that ferromagnetically ordered states become stable upon hole doping. Besides a wide ferromagnetic phase, we observe surface magnetism close to half-filling, which corresponds to an A-type antiferromagnetic state. We further study the impact of the magnetism on the symmetry protected surface states and find that depending on the surface and the magnetization direction, surface states are still protected by reflection symmetry present in our model. The symmetry protected surface states are shifted away by the magnetization from their original high symmetry momenta in the Brillouin zone. Remarkably, due to the magnetization, the surface states are deformed, resulting in the appearance of arcs in the momentum resolved spectrum.

Reduction of topological $\mathbb{Z}$ classification in cold atomic systems

One of the most challenging problems in correlated topological systems is a realization of the reduction of topological classification, but very few experimental platforms have been proposed so far. We here demonstrate that ultracold dipolar fermions (e.g., $^{167}$Er, $^{161}$Dy, and $^{53}$Cr) loaded in an optical lattice of two-leg ladder geometry can be the first promising testbed for the reduction $\mathbb{Z}\to\mathbb{Z}_4$, where solid evidence for the reduction is available thanks to their high controllability. We further give a detailed account of how to experimentally access this phenomenon; around the edges, the destruction of one-particle gapless excitations can be observed by the local radio frequency spectroscopy, while that of gapless spin excitations can be observed by a time-dependent spin expectation value of a superposed state of the ground state and the first excited state. We clarify that even when the reduction occurs, a gapless edge mode is recovered around a dislocation, which can be another piece of evidence for the reduction.

Competition of striped magnetic order and partial Kondo screened state in the Kondo lattice model

We analyze the magnetically ordered phases in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice around quarter filling using the dynamical mean field theory. We find that close to quarter filling besides the paramagnetic phase, at least three magnetic phases compete. These phases are a ferromagnetic state, a partial Kondo screened state, which is a combination of charge order and magnetic order, and a striped magnetic phase, which is ferromagnetically ordered in one direction and antiferromagnetically in the other direction. We analyze the spectral properties of these states and show that the PKS state is insulating with a flat band above the Fermi energy, while the other states are metallic. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the energy gain by the Kondo effect is larger in the PKS state, while the striped magnetic state can gain more energy from the RKKY interaction. Thus, while the striped magnetic state is stable at weak coupling, the PKS state becomes stable at intermediate coupling.

Symmetry-protected topological phase transition in one-dimensional Kondo lattice and its realization with ultracold atoms

We propose that ultracold alkaline-earth-like atoms confined in one-dimensional optical lattice can realize a Kondo lattice model which hosts a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase and an associated quantum phase transition in a controllable manner. The symmetry protection of the phase transition is discussed from two different viewpoints: topological properties related to spatial patterns of Kondo singlets, and symmetry eigenvalues of the spin states. We uncover the role of various symmetries in the phase diagram of this system by combining a weak-coupling approach by Abelian bosonization and strong-coupling pictures of ground states. Furthermore, we show that the bosonization approach correctly describes a crossover from a fermionic SPT phase to a bosonic SPT phase and an associated change of protecting symmetries as the charge degrees of freedom are frozen by the Hubbard repulsion.

Laser-irradiated Kondo insulators : Controlling Kondo effect and topological phases

We theoretically investigate the nature of laser-irradiated Kondo insulators. Using Floquet theory and slave boson approach, we study a periodic Anderson model and derive an effective model which describes the laser-irradiated Kondo insulators. In this model, we find two generic effects induced by laser light. One is the dynamical localization, which suppresses hopping and hybridization. The other is the laser-induced hopping and hybridization, which can be interpreted as a synthetic spin-orbit coupling or magnetic field. The first effect drastically changes the behavior of the Kondo effect. Especially, the Kondo effect under laser light qualitatively changes its character depending on whether the hybridization is on-site or off-site. The second effect triggers topological phase transitions. In topological Kondo insulators, linearly polarized laser light realizes phase transitions between trivial, weak topological, and strong topological Kondo insulators. Moreover, circularly polarized laser light breaks time-reversal symmetry and induces Weyl semimetallic phases. Our results pave the new way to dynamically control the Kondo effect and topological phases in heavy fermion systems. We also discuss experimental setups to detect the signatures.

Stabilization of prethermal Floquet steady states in a periodically driven dissipative Bose-Hubbard model

We discuss the effect of dissipation on heating which occurs in periodically driven quantum many body systems. We especially focus on a periodically driven Bose-Hubbard model coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. Without dissipation, this model is known to undergo parametric instabilities which can be considered as an initial stage of heating. By taking the weak on-site interaction limit as well as the weak system-reservoir coupling limit, we find that parametric instabilities are suppressed if the dissipation is stronger than the on-site interaction strength and stable steady states appear. Our results demonstrate that periodically-driven systems can emit energy, which is absorbed from external drivings, to the reservoir so that they can avoid heating.

Fate of Majorana modes in $\mathrm{CeCoIn}_5$/$\mathrm{YbCoIn}_5$ superlattices -a test bed for reduction of topological classification-

In this paper, we propose $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}/\mathrm{YbCoIn_5}$ superlattice systems as a test bed for the reduction of topological classification in free fermions. We find that the system with quad-layer of $\mathrm{CeCoIn_5}$ shows a topological crystalline superconducting phase with the mirror Chern number eight at the non-interacting level. Furthermore, we demonstrate that in the presence of two-body interactions, gapless edge modes are no longer protected by the symmetry in the system with quad-layer, but are protected in the systems with bi- or tri-layer. This clearly exemplifies the reduction of topological classification from $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}$ to $\mathbb{Z}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_8$.

Reduction of $\mathbb{Z}$ classification of a two-dimensional weak topological insulator - real-space DMFT study -

One of the remarkable interaction effects on topological insulators is the reduction of topological classification in free-fermion systems. We address this issue in a bilayer honeycomb lattice model by taking into account temperature effects on the reduction. Our analysis, based on the real-space dynamical mean field theory, elucidates the following results. (i) Even when the reduction occurs, the winding number defined by the Green's function can take a nontrivial value at zero temperature. (ii) The winding number taking the nontrivial value becomes consistent with the absence of gapless edge modes due to Mott behaviors emerging only at the edges. (iii) Temperature effects can restore the gapless edge modes, provided that the energy scale of interactions is smaller than the bulk gap. In addition, we observe the topological edge Mott behavior only in some finite temperature region.

Laser-induced topological superconductivity in cuprate thin films

We propose a possible way to realize topological superconductivity with application of laser light to superconducting cuprate thin films. Applying Floquet theory to a model of $d$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, we derive an effective model and discuss its topological nature. Interplay of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the laser light effect induces the synthetic magnetic fields, thus making the system gapped. Then the system acquires the topologically non-trivial nature which is characterized by Chern numbers. The effective magnetic fields do not create the vortices in superconductors, and thus the proposed scheme provides a promising way to dynamically realize a topological superconductor in cuprates. We also discuss an experimental way to detect the signature.

Magnetism in f electron superlattices

We analyze antiferromagnetism in $f$ electron superlattices. We show that the competition between the Kondo effect and the RKKY interaction in $f$ electron materials is modified by the superlattice structure. Thus, the quantum critical point which separates the magnetic phase and the Fermi liquid phase depends on the structure of the $f$ electron superlattice. The competition between the Kondo effect and the RKKY interaction is also reflected in the magnetic interlayer coupling between different $f$ electron layers. We demonstrate that in the case of weak Kondo effect the magnetic interlayer coupling behaves similar to other magnetic heterostructures without Kondo effect. However, close to the quantum phase transition, the dependence of the interlayer coupling on the distance between the $f$ electron layers is modified by the Kondo effect. Another remarkable effect, which is characteristic for $f$ electron superlattice, is that the magnetic interlayer coupling does vanish stepwise depending on the distance between different $f$ electron layers. As a consequence, the quantum critical point depends also stepwise on this distance.

Visualizing a Bosonic Symmetry Protected Topological Phase in an Interacting Fermion Model

Symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases in free fermion and interacting bosonic systems have been classified, but the physical phenomena of interacting fermionic SPT phases have not been fully explored. Here, employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we investigate the edge physics of a bilayer Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with zigzag ribbon geometry. Our unbiased numerical results show that the fermion edge modes are gapped out by interaction, while the bosonic edge modes remain gapless at the $(1+1)d$ boundary, before the bulk quantum phase transition to a topologically trivial phase. Therefore, finite fermion gaps both in the bulk and on the edge, together with the robust gapless bosonic edge modes, prove that our system becomes an emergent bosonic SPT phase at low energy, which is, for the first time, directly observed in an interacting fermion lattice model.

Long time asymptotic state of periodically driven open quantum systems

We investigate a long time asymptotic state of periodically driven open quantum systems analytically. The model we consider in this paper is a free fermionic system coupled to an energy and particle reservoir. We clarify some generic properties of the system which are independent of the details of the reservoir in the high frequency regime of the external driving. When the frequency of the external driving is much larger than the energy cutoff of the system-reservoir coupling, the low-energy properties of the system are equivalent to those of the Gibbs distribution of a Floquet effective Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of finite dissipation on the system, and elucidate that we cannot suppress excitations by merely increasing the system-reservoir coupling because the excitations are created through the reservoir by the external driving when the frequency is smaller than the energy cutoff of the system-reservoir coupling.
