Periodically-driven Kondo impurity in nonequilibrium steady states

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of a periodically-driven anisotropic Kondo impurity model. The periodic time dependence is introduced for a local magnetic field which couples to the impurity spin and also for an in-plane exchange interaction. We obtain the exact results on the time evolution for arbitrary periodic time dependence at the special point in the parameter space known as the Toulouse limit. We first consider a specific case where the local magnetic field is periodically switched on and off. When the driving period is much shorter than the inverse of the Kondo temperature, an intriguing oscillating behavior (resonance phenomenon) emerges in the time average of the impurity spin polarization with increasing the local magnetic field intensity. By taking the high frequency limit of the external driving, we elucidate that the system recovers the translational invariance in time and can be described by a mixture of the zero-temperature and infinite-temperature properties. In certain cases, the system is governed by either the zero-temperature or infinite-temperature properties, and therefore can be properly described by the corresponding equilibrium state.

Coexistence of light and heavy surface states in a topological multi-band Kondo insulator

We analyze the impact of strong correlations on the surface states of a three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator. An important observation is that correlations are strongly increased at the surface, which leads to an energetical confinement of the surface $f$-electrons into a narrow window around the Fermi energy at low enough temperature. This correlation effect in combination with the nontrivial topology has two remarkable consequences: (i) coexistence of light and heavy surface states at low temperatures. While heavy surface states are formed directly in the surface layer, light surface states are formed in the next-nearest surface layer. Furthermore, (ii) with increasing the temperature, the heavy surface states become incoherent and only light surface states can be observed. The coexistence of light and heavy surface states is thereby a remarkable characteristic of the combination of strong correlations and nontrivial topology. We believe that these results are applicable to the candidate topological Kondo insulator SmB6.

Topological edge Mott insulating state in two dimensions at finite temperatures -bulk and edge analysis-

We study a bilayer Kane-Mele-Hubbard model with lattice distortion and inter-layer spin exchange interaction under cylinder geometry. Our analysis based on real-space dynamical mean field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo demonstrates the emergence of a topological edge Mott insulating (TEMI) state which hosts gapless edge modes only in collective spin excitations. This is confirmed by the numerical calculations at finite temperatures for the spin-Hall conductivity and the single-particle excitation spectrum; the spin Hall conductivity is almost quantized, $σ^{xy}_\mathrm{spin}\sim2(e/2π)$, predicting gapless edge modes carrying the spin current, while the helical edge modes in the single-particle spectrum are gapped out with respecting symmetry. It is clarified how the TEMI state evolves from the ordinary spin Hall insulating state with increasing the Hubbard interaction at a given temperature and then undergoes a phase transition to a trivial Mott insulating state. With a bosonization approach at zero temperature, we further address which collective modes host gapless edge modes in the TEMI state.

Laser-induced Kondo effect in ultracold alkaline-earth fermions

We demonstrate that laser excitations can coherently induce a novel Kondo effect in ultracold atoms in optical lattices. Using a model of alkaline-earth fermions with two orbitals, it is shown that the optically coupled two internal states are dynamically entangled to form the Kondo-singlet state, overcoming the heating effect due to the irradiation. Furthermore, a lack of SU($N$) symmetry in the optical coupling provides a peculiar feature in the Kondo effect, which results in spin-selective renormalization of effective masses. We also discuss effects of interorbital exchange interactions, and reveal that they induce novel crossover or reentrant behavior of the Kondo effect owing to control of the coupling anisotropy. The laser-induced Kondo effect is highly controllable by tuning the laser strength and the frequency, and thus offers a versatile platform to study the Kondo physics using ultracold atoms.

Laser-induced phase transitions of topological Kondo insulators

In this paper, we theoretically investigate how laser fields change the nature of topological Kondo insulators(TKIs). By employing a prototypical model of TKIs, we treat the effect of the laser fields with Floquet theory, which gives effective description under high frequency laser fields. We derive the effective model of TKIs under the laser irradiation and discuss its topological properties. We demonstrate a possible realization of Floquet Chern insulators specified by various values of Chern number and reveal how the topological phase changes with increasing the laser light intensity. Furthermore, it is shown that Floquet Weyl semimetals, which have some pairs of Weyl nodes protected topologically, can emerge in the three-dimensional case. We explain how the Weyl nodes are created with varying the strength of the laser field.

Restoration of topological properties at finite temperatures in a heavy-fermion system

We study how topological phases evolve in the Kane-Mele-Kondo lattice at finite temperatures and obtain the topological Doniach phase diagram. In particular, we find an intriguing crossover behavior induced by the interplay between the topological structure and electron correlations; the topological properties are restored by temperature effects. This restoration can be observed in the behavior of the bulk as well as the edge. In the bulk, we observe an increase of the spin-Hall conductivity at finite temperatures, while it is zero in the low temperature region. At the edge, we observe gapless edge modes emerging with increasing temperature.

Large and Small Fermi-Surface Spin Density Waves in the Kondo Lattice Model

We demonstrate the existence of metallic spin density waves (SDWs) in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice for a wide range of parameters by means of real space dynamical mean field theory. In these SDWs, the spin polarization as well as the charge density depend on the lattice site and are modulated along one direction of the square lattice. We show that within this phase of metallic SDWs the Fermi surface changes from small to large, when the coupling strength is increased. Furthermore, the transition between the large Fermi-surface SDW phase and the paramagnetic phase is of second order, while the transition between the small Fermi-surface SDW phase and the paramagnetic phase is of first order. A local quantum critical point is thus avoided in our calculations by undergoing a first order phase transition.

Drag dynamics in one-dimensional Fermi systems

We study drag dynamics of several fermions in a fermion cloud in one-dimensional continuous systems, with particular emphasis on the non-trivial quantum many-body effects in systems whose parameters change gradually in real time. We adopt the Fermi--Hubbard model and the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method to calculate the drag force on a trapped fermion cluster in a cloud of another fermion species with contact interaction. The simulation result shows that a non-trivial peak in the resistance force is observed in the high cloud density region, which implies a criterion of effective ways in diffusive transport in a fermion cloud. We compare the DMRG simulation result with a mean-field result, and it is suggested that some internal degrees of freedom have a crucial role in the excitation process when the cloud density is high. This work emphasizes the difference between the full-quantum calculation and the semiclassical calculation, which is the quantum effects, in slow dynamics of many-body systems bound in a fermion cloud.

Unveiling hidden topological phases of a one-dimensional Hadamard quantum walk

Quantum walks, whose dynamics is prescribed by alternating unitary coin and shift operators, possess topological phases akin to those of Floquet topological insulators, driven by a time-periodic field. While there is ample theoretical work on topological phases of quantum walks where the coin operators are spin rotations, in experiments a different coin, the Hadamard operator is often used instead. This was the case in a recent photonic quantum walk experiment, where protected edge states were observed between two bulks whose topological invariants, as calculated by the standard theory, were the same. This hints at a hidden topological invariant in the Hadamard quantum walk. We establish a relation between the Hadamard and the spin rotation operator, which allows us to apply the recently developed theory of topological phases of quantum walks to the one-dimensional Hadamard quantum walk. The topological invariants we derive account for the edge state observed in the experiment, we thus reveal the hidden topological invariant of the one-dimensional Hadamard quantum walk.

Characterization of a topological Mott insulator in one dimension

We investigate properties of a topological Mott insulator in one dimension by examining the bulk topological invariant and the entanglement spectrum of a correlated electron model. We clarify how gapless edge states in a non-interacting topological band insulator evolve into spinon edge states in a topological Mott insulator. Furthermore, we propose a topological Mott transition, which is a new type of topological phase transition and never observed in free fermion systems. This unconventional transition occurs in spin liquid phases in the Mott insulator and is accompanied by zeros of the single-electron Green's function and a gap closing in the spin excitation spectrum.

Spin Density Waves in the Hubbard model - A DMFT approach

We analyze spin density waves (SDWs) in the Hubbard model on a square lattice within the framework of inhomogeneous dynamical mean field theory (iDMFT). Doping the half-filled Hubbard model results in a change of the antiferromagnetic Néel state, which exists exactly at half filling, to a phase of incommensurate SDWs. Previous studies of this phase mainly rely on static mean field calculations. In this paper, we will use large-scale iDMFT calculations to study properties of SDWs in the Hubbard model. A great advantage of iDMFT over static mean field approaches is the inclusion of local screening effects and the easy access to dynamical correlation functions. Furthermore, this technique is not restricted to the Hubbard model, but can be easily used to study incommensurate phases in various strongly correlated materials.

Topological Properties of Ultracold Bosons in One-Dimensional Quasiperiodic Optical Lattice

We analyze topological properties of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with a quasiperiodic superlattice potential. This system can be realized in interacting ultracold bosons in optical lattice in the presence of an incommensurate superlattice potential. We first analyze the quasiperiodic superlattice made by the cosine function, which we call Harper-like Bose-Hubbard model. We compute the Chern number and observe a gap-closing behavior as the interaction strength $U$ is changed. Also, we discuss the bulk-edge correspondence in our system. Furthermore, we explore the phase diagram as a function of $U$ and a continuous deformation parameter $β$ between the Harper-like model and another important quasiperiodic lattice, the Fibonacci model. We numerically confirm that the incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) phase is topologically non-trivial and it is topologically equivalent in the whole ICDW region.

Non-equilibrium topological phase transitions in two-dimensional optical lattices

Recently, concepts of topological phases of matter are extended to non-equilibrium systems, especially periodically driven systems. In this paper, we construct an example which shows non-equilibrium topological phase transitions using ultracold fermions in optical lattices. We show that the Rabi oscillation has the possibility to induce non-equilibrium topological phases which are classified into time-reversal-invariant topological insulators for a two-orbital model of alkaline-earth-metal atoms. Furthermore we study the non-equilibrium topological phases using time-dependent Schrieffer-Wolff-type perturbation theory, and we obtain an analytical expression to describe the topological phase transitions from a high-frequency limit of external driving fields.

The surface density of states of layered {\it f}-electron materials

We theoretically analyze the surface density of states of heavy fermion materials such as CeCoIn$_5$. Recent experimental progress made it possible to locally probe the formation of heavy quasi-particles in these systems via scanning tunneling microscopy, in which strongly temperature-dependent resonances at the Fermi energy have been observed. The shape of these resonances varies depending on the surface layer, i.e. if Cerium or Cobalt terminates the sample. We clarify the microscopic origin of this difference by taking into account the layered structure of the material. Our simple model explains all the characteristic properties observed experimentally, such as a layer-dependent shape of the resonance at the Fermi energy, displaying a hybridization gap for the Cerium-layer and a peak or dip structure for the other layers. Our proposal resolves the seemingly unphysical assumptions in the preceding analysis based on the two-channel cotunneling model.

Kondo effect in f-electron superlattices

We demonstrate the importance of the Kondo effect in artificially created {\it f}-electron superlattices. We show that the Kondo effect does not only change the density of states of the {\it f}-electron layers, but is also the cause of pronounced resonances at the Fermi energy in the density of states of the non-interacting layers in the superlattice, which are between the {\it f}-electron layers. Remarkably, these resonances strongly depend on the structure of the superlattice; due to interference, the density of states at the Fermi energy can be strongly enhanced or even shows no changes at all. Furthermore, we show that by inserting the Kondo lattice layer into a three-dimensional (3D) metal, the gap of the Kondo insulating state changes from a full gap to a pseudo gap with quadratically vanishing spectral weight around the Fermi energy. Due to the formation of the Kondo insulating state in the {\it f}-electron layer, the superlattice becomes strongly anisotropic below the Kondo temperature. We prove this by calculating the in-plane and out-of-plane conductivity of the superlattice.

Study of interface phenomena in a topological-insulator/Mott-insulator heterostructure

We theoretically investigate a two-dimensional heterostructure composed of a topological insulator (TI) and a Mott insulator (MI), and clarify what kind of electronic states can be realized at the interface. By using inhomogeneous dynamical mean-field theory, we confirm that the topological edge state penetrating into the MI region induces a heavy-fermion like mid-gap state. We further elucidate the nature of the spatially-modulated quasi-particle weight of the mid-gap state, and discuss the effects of local correlation in the TI region. The optical conductivity and the Drude weight are also computed with changing the electron tunneling near the interface.

Reentrant topological transitions with Majorana end states in 1D superconductors by lattice modulation

The possibility to observe and manipulate Majorana fermions as end states of one-dimensional topological superconductors has been actively discussed recently. In a quantum wire with strong spin-orbit coupling placed in proximity to a bulk superconductor, a topological superconductor has been expected to be realized when the band energy is split by the application of a magnetic field. When a periodic lattice modulation is applied multiple topological superconductor phases appear in the phase diagram. Some of them occur for higher filling factors compared to the case without the modulation. We study the effects of phase jumps and argue that the topologically nontrivial state of the whole system is retained even if they are present. We also study the effect of the spatial modulation in the hopping parameter.

Charge order in Kondo lattice systems

Charge order is a commonly observed phenomenon in strongly correlated materials. However, most theories are based on a repulsive inter-site Coulomb interaction in order to explain charge order. We here show that only due to local interactions, charge order is favorable in heavy fermion systems at quarter filling. The driving force is the Kondo effect, which leads to a non-linear dependence on the filling of the lattice site for the energy gain. We use dynamical mean field theory combined with numerical renormalization group to demonstrate the existence of charge order at quarter filling for a Kondo lattice model.
