Finite temperature Mott transition in Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattice

We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice by means of the cellular dynamical mean field theory. The phase diagram determined in the Hubbard interaction versus temperature plane shows novel reentrant behavior in the Mott transition due to the competition between Fermi-liquid formation and magnetic correlations under geometrical frustration. We demonstrate that the reentrant behavior is characteristic of the Mott transition with intermediate geometrical frustration and indeed consistent with recent experimental results of organic materials.

Quantum phase transitions in the extended periodic Anderson model

We investigate quantum phase transitions in the extended periodic Anderson model, which includes electron correlations within and between itinerant and localized bands. We calculate zero and finite temperature properties of the system using the combination of dynamical mean-field theory and the numerical renormalization group. At half filling, a phase transition between a Mott insulating state and a Kondo insulating state occurs in the strong coupling regime. We furthermore find that a metallic state is stabilized in the weak coupling regime. This state should be adiabatically connected to the orbital selective Mott state with one orbital localized and the other itinerant. The effect of hole doping is also addressed.

Thermopower, figure of merit, quantum dot, Kondo effect, orbital degrees of freedom

We study the thermopower and some related transport quantities due to the orbital Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system with a finite value of Coulomb repulsion by means of the noncrossing approximation applied to the multiorbital impurity Anderson model. It is elucidated how the asymmetry of the renormalized tunneling resonance due to the two-orbital Kondo effect causes characteristic behavior of the thermopower at finite temperatures under gate-voltage and magnetic-field control, which is compared with that of the ordinary spin Kondo effect.

Variational Monte Carlo analysis of the Hubbard model with a confining potential: one-dimensional fermionic optical lattice systems

We investigate the one-dimensional Hubbard model with a confining potential, which may describe cold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice. Combining the variational Monte Carlo simulations with the new stochastic reconfiguration scheme proposed by Sorella, we present an efficient method to systematically treat the ground state properties of the confined system with a site-dependent potential. By taking into account intersite correlations as well as site-dependent on-site correlations, we are able to describe the coexistence of the metallic and Mott insulating regions, which is consistent with other numerical results. Several possible improvements of the trial states are also addressed.

Anomalous magnetic properties near Mott transition in Kagomé lattice Hubbard model

We investigate the characteristics of the metallic phase near the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model using the cellular dynamical mean field theory. By calculating the specific heat and spin correlation functions, we demonstrate that the quasiparticles show anomalous properties in the metallic phase close to the Mott transition. We find clear evidence for the multi-band heavy quasiparticles in the specific heat, which gives rise to unusual temperature dependence of the spin correlation functions.

Magnetic correlations around the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model

We study the magnetic properties around the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model by the cellular dynamical mean field theory combined with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By investigating the q-dependence of the susceptibility, we find a dramatic change of the dominant spin fluctuations around the Mott transition. The spin fluctuations in the insulating phase favor down to the lowest temperature a spatial spin configuration in which antiferromagnetic correlations are strong only in one chain direction but almost vanishing in the others.

Fermionic atoms trapped in one-dimensional optical superlattice with harmonic confinement

We study the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 fermionic atoms confined in a one-dimensional optical superlattice with harmonic confinement by using the density matrix renormalization group method. For this purpose, we consider an ionic Hubbard model that has superlattice potentials with 2-site periodicity. We find that several different types of insulating regimes coexist even if the number of atoms at each site is not an integer, but its average within the unit cell is an integer or half integer. This is contrasted to the coexisting phase of the metallic and Mott-insulating regimes known for the ordinary Hubbard model in an optical lattice. The phase characteristics are elucidated by investigating the profiles of the atom density, the local density/spin fluctuations, the double occupation probability and the spin correlations in detail.

Transport through Double-Dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads

We study transport through double quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads, where the Andreev reflection plays a key role in determining characteristic transport properties. We shall discuss two typical cases, i.e. double dots with serial or parallel geometry. For the parallel geometry, the interference of electrons via multiple paths is induced, so that the transmission probability has Fano-type dip structures which are symmetric with respect to the Fermi energy. We also investigate the Aharonov-Bohm(AB) effect for the parallel geometry. In some particular situations, we find that the general AB period for double dots, 4$π$, is reduced to 2$π$.

Mott transition in Kagomé lattice Hubbard model

We investigate the Mott transition in the Kagomé lattice Hubbard model using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. The calculation of the double occupancy, the density of states, the static and dynamical spin correlation functions demonstrates that the system undergoes the first-order Mott transition at the Hubbard interaction $U/W \sim 1.4$ ($W$:bandwidth). In the metallic phase close to the Mott transition, we find the strong renormalization of three distinct bands, giving rise to the formation of heavy quasiparticles with strong frustration. It is elucidated that the quasiparticle states exhibit anomalous behavior in the temperature-dependent spin correlation functions.

Conductance via Multi orbital Kondo Effect in Single Quantum Dot

We study the Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system with two or three orbitals by using the Bethe-ansatz exact solution at zero temperature and the non-crossing approximation at finite temperatures. For the two-orbital Kondo effect, the conductance is shown to be constant at absolute zero in any magnetic fields, but decrease monotonically with increasing fields at finite temperatures. In the case with more orbitals, the conductance increases at absolute zero, while it features a maximum structure as a function of the magnetic field at finite temperatures. We discuss how these characteristic transport properties come from the multi orbital Kondo effect in magnetic fields.

Aharonov-Bohm Effect for Parallel and T-shaped Double Quantum Dots

We investigate the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect for the double quantum dots in the Kondo regime using the slave-boson mean-field approximation. In contrast to the non-interacting case, where the AB oscillation generally has the period of 4$π$ when the two-subring structure is formed via the interdot tunneling $t_c$, we find that the AB oscillation has the period of 2$π$ in the Kondo regime. Such effects appear for the double quantum dots close to the T-shaped geometry even in the charge-fluctuation regime. These results follow from the fact that the Kondo resonance is always fixed to the Fermi level irrespective of the detailed structure of the bare dot-levels.

Interference Effects on Kondo-Assisted Transport through Double Quantum Dots

We systematically investigate electron transport through double quantum dots with particular emphasis on interference induced via multiple paths of electron propagation. By means of the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we calculate the conductance, the local density of states, the transmission probability in the Kondo regime at zero temperature. It is clarified how the Kondo-assisted transport changes its properties when the system is continuously changed among the serial, parallel and T-shaped double dots. The obtained results for the conductance are explained in terms of the Kondo resonances influenced by interference effects. We also discuss the impacts due to the spin-polarization of ferromagnetic leads.

Phase diagram of orbital-selective Mott transitions at finite temperatures

Mott transitions in the two-orbital Hubbard model with different bandwidths are investigated at finite temperatures. By means of the self-energy functional approach, we discuss the stability of the intermediate phase with one orbital localized and the other itinerant, which is caused by the orbital-selective Mott transition (OSMT). It is shown that the OSMT realizes two different coexistence regions at finite temperatures in accordance with the recent results of Liebsch. We further find that the particularly interesting behavior emerges around the special condition $U=U'$ and J=0, which includes a new type of the coexistence region with three distinct states. By systematically changing the Hund coupling, we establish the global phase diagram to elucidate the key role played by the Hund coupling on the Mott transitions.

Finite-temperature Mott transitions in multi-orbital Hubbard model

We investigate the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard model at half-filling by means of the self-energy functional approach. The phase diagrams are obtained at finite temperatures for the Hubbard model with up to four-fold degenerate bands. We discuss how the first-order Mott transition points $U_{c1}$ and $U_{c2}$ as well as the critical temperature $T_c$ depend on the orbital degeneracy. It is elucidated that enhanced orbital fluctuations play a key role to control the Mott transitions in the multi-orbital Hubbard model.

Spin, charge and orbital fluctuations in a multi-orbital Mott insulator

The two-orbital degenerate Hubbard model with distinct hopping integrals is studied by combining dynamical mean-field theory with quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The role of orbital fluctuations for the nature of the Mott transition is elucidated by examining the temperature dependence of spin, charge and orbital susceptibilities as well as the one-particle spectral function. We also consider the effect of the hybridization between the two orbitals, which is important particularly close to the Mott transition points. The introduction of the hybridization induces orbital fluctuations, resulting in the formation of a Kondo-like heavy-fermion behavior, similarly to $f$ electron systems, but involving electrons in bands of comparable width.

Magnetic properties of a Kondo insulator with RKKY interaction: Extended dynamical mean field study

We study the Kondo lattice model with the Heisenberg-type RKKY-exchange coupling among localized f-spins in the presence of a magnetic field. By means of an extended dynamical mean field theory combined with the non-crossing approximation, we investigate the one-particle spectral function and the dynamical spin correlation function in the Kondo insulating phase. It is shown that the magnetic field and the RKKY exchange interaction both cause the instability to the antiferromagnetic order with enhanced transverse spin fluctuations, which give rise to a strong renormalization of quasi-particles as the system approaches the quantum critical point. This leads to a tendency to retain the Kondo insulating gap up to rather large fields.

Kondo Effect in Multiple-Dot Systems

We study the Kondo effect in multiple-dot systems for which the inter- as well as intra-dot Coulomb repulsions are strong, and the inter-dot tunneling is small. The application of the Ward-Takahashi identity to the inter-dot dynamical susceptibility enables us to analytically calculate the conductance for a double-dot system by using the Bethe-ansatz exact solution of the SU(4) impurity Anderson model. It is clarified how the inter-dot Kondo effect enhances or suppresses the conductance under the control of the gate voltage and the magnetic field. We then extend our analysis to multiple-dot systems including more than two dots, and discuss their characteristic transport properties by taking a triple-dot system as an example.

One-Dimensional S=1 Spin-Orbital Model with Uniaxial Single-Ion Anisotropy

We investigate ground-state properties of a one-dimensional S=1 spin-orbital model with or without uniaxial single-ion anisotropy. By means of the density matrix renormalization group method, we compute the ground-state energy, the magnetization curves and the correlation functions. We discuss how the ground-state properties depend on the two exchange couplings for orbital and spin sectors. The phase diagram obtained is compared with that for the S=1/2 model. We also address the effect of uniaxial single-ion anisotropy.
