Upper critical field in superconductors near ferromagnetic quantum critical points; UCoGe

We study the strong-coupling superconductivity near ferromagnetic quantum critical points, mainly focusing on the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$. Based on our simple model calculations, we discuss experimentally observed unusual behaviors of $H_{c2}$ in a recently discovered ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. Especially, the large anisotropy between $H_{c2}\parallel a$-axis and $H_{c2}\parallel c$-axis, and the strong-coupling behaviors in $H_{c2}^{\parallel a}$ are investigated. We also examine effects of non-analytic corrections in the spin susceptibility on the superconductivity, which can arise from effective long range interactions due to particle-hole excitations.

Mott transition in the Hubbard model on the anisotropic kagomé lattice

We investigate the Mott transition in the anisotropic kagomé lattice Hubbard model using the cellular dynamical mean field theory combined with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By calculating the double occupancy and the density of states, we determine the interaction strength of the first-order Mott transition and show that it becomes small as the anisotropy increases. We also calculate the spin correlation functions and the single-particle spectrum, and reveal that the quasiparticle and magnetic properties change dramatically around the Mott transition; the spin correlations are strongly enhanced and the quasiparticle bands are deformed. We conclude that such dramatic changes are due to the enhancement of anisotropy associated with the relaxation of frustration around the Mott transition.

Ferromagnetism of cold fermions loaded into a decorated square lattice

We investigate two-component ultracold fermions loaded into a decorated square lattice, which are described by the Hubbard model with repulsive interactions and nearest neighbor hoppings. By combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group method, we discuss how a ferromagnetically ordered ground state in the weak coupling regime, which originates from the existence of a dispersionless band, is adiabatically connected to a Heisenberg ferrimagnetic state in the strong coupling limit. The effects of level splitting and hopping imbalance are also addressed.

Enhanced Andreev Tunneling via the Kondo Resonance in a Quantum Dot at Finite Bias

We study the nonequilibrium transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads. We use the modified second-order perturbation theory to calculate the differential conductance and the local density of states at the quantum dot. In the strong but finite Coulomb interaction regime, the differential conductance shows an anomalous peak not at a zero bias voltage but at a finite bias voltage. We also observe an additional Kondo resonance besides the normal one in the local density of states, where the former is caused by nonequilibrium Andreev tunneling via the normal Kondo resonance. We explain that this specific Andreev tunneling gives rise to the anomalous peak in the differential conductance. Since the Andreev tunneling via the Kondo resonance is suppressed with increasing temperature, the anomalous peak in the differential conductance disappears at high temperatures.

Correlated electron transport through double quantum dots coupled to normal and superconducting leads

We study Andreev transport through double quantum dots connected in series normal and superconducting (SC) leads, using the numerical renormalization group. The ground state of this system shows a crossover between a local Cooper-pairing singlet state and a Kondo singlet state, which is caused by the competition between the Coulomb interaction and the SC proximity. We show that the ground-state properties reflect this crossover especially for small values of the inter-dot coupling $t$, while in the opposite case, for large $t$, another singlet with an inter-dot character becomes dominant. We find that the conductance for the local SC singlet state has a peak with the unitary-limit value $4e^2/h$. In contrast, the Andreev reflection is suppressed in the Kondo regime by the Coulomb interaction. Furthermore, the conductance has two successive peaks in the transient region of the crossover. It is further elucidated that the gate voltage gives a different variation into the crossover. Specifically, as the energy level of the dot that is coupled to the normal lead varies, the Kondo screening cloud is deformed to a long-range singlet bond.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics of Ultracold Fermions in Optical Superlattices

We study the time-dependent dynamical properties of two-component ultracold fermions in a one-dimensional optical superlattice by applying the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group to a repulsive Hubbard model with an alternating superlattice potential. We clarify how the time evolution of local quantities occurs when the superlattice potential is suddenly changed to a normal one. For a Mott-type insulating state at quarter filling, the time evolution exhibits a profile similar to that expected for bosonic atoms, where correlation effects are less important. On the other hand, for a band-type insulating state at half filling, the strong repulsive interaction induces an unusual pairing of fermions, resulting in some striking properties in time evolution, such as a paired fermion co-tunneling process and the suppression of local spin moments. We further address the effect of a confining potential, which causes spatial confinement of the paired fermions.

Pairing state at an interface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: parity-mixing, restored time-reversal symmetry, and topological superconductivity

We investigate pairing states realized at the (001) interface of a spin-triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ on the basis of microscopic calculations. Because of a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction induced at the interface, strong parity-mixing of Cooper pairs between a spin-singlet state and a spin-triplet state occurs in this system. There are also strong inter-band pair correlations between the spin-orbit split bands, in spite of the considerably large spin-orbit splitting. This is due to frustration between the spin-orbit interaction and pairing interactions. In this pairing state, time-reversal symmetry is restored, in contrast to the bulk Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ which is believed to be a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry. It is demonstrated that, because of these features, the pairing state at the interface is a promising candidate for the recently proposed time-reversal invariant topological superconductor.

Supersolid state in fermionic optical lattice systems

We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice with harmonic confinement by combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with a two-site impurity solver. By calculating the local particle density and the pair potential in the systems with different clusters, we discuss the stability of a supersolid state, where an s-wave superfluid coexists with a density-wave state of checkerboard pattern. It is clarified that a confining potential plays an essential role in stabilizing the supersolid state. The phase diagrams are obtained for several effective particle densities.

Quantum Phase Transitions in the Hubbard Model on Triangular Lattice

We investigate the quantum phase transitions in the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice by means of the path-integral renormalization group (PIRG) method with a new iteration scheme proposed recently. It is found that as the Hubbard interaction $U$ increases, the paramagnetic metallic state undergoes a first-order phase transition to a nonmagnetic insulating (NMI) state at $U_{c1}\sim 7.7t$, which is followed by another first-order transition to a $120^\circ$ Néel ordered state at $U_{c2}\sim 10t$, where $t$ is the transfer integral. Our results ensure the existence of the intermediate NMI phase, and resolve some controversial arguments on the nature of the previously proposed quantum phase transitions. We find that $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ is located in the NMI phase close to the metal-insulator transition point.

Finite-Temperature Mott Transition in Two-Dimensional Frustrated Hubbard Models

We investigate the Hubbard model on two typical frustrated lattices in two dimensions, the kagome lattice and the anisotropic triangular lattice, by means of the cellular dynamical mean field theory. We show that the metallic phase is stabilized up to fairly large Hubbard interactions under strong geometrical frustration in both cases, which results in heavy fermion behavior and several anomalous properties around the Mott transition point. In particular, for the anisotropic triangular lattice, we find novel reentrant behavior in the Mott transition in the moderately frustrated parameter regime, which is caused by the competition between Fermi-liquid formation and magnetic correlations. It is demonstrated that the reentrant behavior is a generic feature inherent in the Mott transition with intermediate geometrical frustration, and indeed in accordance with recent experimental findings for organic materials.

Spatially-modulated Superfluid States in Fermionic Optical Ladder Systems with Repulsive Interactions

We investigate two-component ultracold fermionic atoms with repulsive interactions trapped in an optical lattice with a ladder structure. By applying the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to an effective t-J model in the strong correlation limit, we discuss how the spatially-modulated spin-singlet pairs with d-wave like symmetry are formed in the systems with trapping potentials. Furthermore, a close examination of the condensation energy as well as the local average of potential, kinetic and exchange energies by means of the variational Monte Carlo method elucidates that local particle correlations enhance the stability of the superfluid state via substantial energy gain due to singlet pairing in the high particle density region.

Systematic Analysis of Frustration Effects in Anisotropic Checkerboard Lattice Hubbard Model

We study the ground state properties of the geometrically frustrated Hubbard model on the anisotropic checkerboard lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping $t$ and next nearest-neighbor hopping $t'$. By using the path-integral renormalization group method, we study the phase diagram in the parameter space of the Hubbard interaction $U$ and the frustration-control parameter $t'/t$. Close examinations of the effective hopping, the double occupancy, the momentum distribution and the spin/charge correlation functions allow us to determine the phase diagram at zero temperature, where the plaquette-singlet insulator emerges besides the antiferromagnetic insulator and the paramagnetic metal. Spin-liquid insulating states without any kind of symmetry breaking cannot be found in our frustrated model.

Mott Transition in the Hubbard Model on Checkerboard Lattice

We investigate the bandwidth-controlled Mott transition in the Hubbard model on the checkerboard lattice at half filling using the path-integral renormalization group (PIRG) method. It is demonstrated that the system undergoes a first-order phase transition to the plaquette-singlet insulating phase at a finite Hubbard interaction. This conclusion is drawn via a detailed analysis of the spin and charge correlations around the phase transition point by means of the PIRG method aided with a new iteration scheme introduced in this paper.

Numerical Renormalization Group Approach to a Quantum Dot Coupled to Normal and Superconducting Leads

We study transport through a quantum dot coupled to normal and superconducting leads using the numerical renormalization group method. We show that the low-energy properties of the system are described by the local Fermi liquid theory despite of the superconducting correlations penetrated into the dot due to a proximity effect. We calculate the linear conductance due to the Andreev reflection in the presence of the Coulomb interaction. It is demonstrated that the maximum structure appearing in the conductance clearly characterizes a crossover between two distinct spin-singlet ground states, i.e. the superconducting singlet state and the Kondo singlet state. It is further elucidated that the gate-voltage dependence of the conductance shows different behavior in the superconducting singlet region from that in the Kondo singlet region.

Supersolid state of ultracold fermions in an optical lattice

We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice with harmonic confinement by means of the dynamical mean-field approximation. It is demonstrated that a supersolid state, where an s-wave superfluid coexists with a density-wave state with a checkerboard pattern, is stabilized by attractive onsite interactions on a square lattice. Our new finding here is that a confining potential plays an invaluable role in stabilizing the supersolid state. We establish a rich phase diagram at low temperatures, which clearly shows how the insulator, the density wave and the superfluid compete with each other to produce an intriguing domain structure. Our results shed light on the possibility of the supersolid state in fermionic optical lattice systems.

Andreev Transport through Side-Coupled Double Quantum Dots

We study the transport through side-coupled double quantum dots, connected to normal and superconducting (SC) leads with a T-shape configuration. We find, using the numerical renormalization group, that the Coulomb interaction suppresses SC interference in the side dot, and enhances the conductance substantially in the Kondo regime. This behavior stands in total contrast to a wide Kondo valley seen in the normal transport. The SC proximity penetrating into the interfacial dot pushes the Kondo clouds, which screens the local moment in the side dot, towards the normal lead to make the singlet bond long. The conductance shows a peak of unitary limit as the cloud expands. Furthermore, two separate Fano structures appear in the gate-voltage dependence of the Andreev transport, where a single reduced plateau appears in the normal transport.

Magnetic properties of the extended periodic Anderson model

We study magnetic properties of the extended periodic Anderson model, which includes electron correlations within and between itinerant and localized bands. By combining dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group we calculate the sublattice magnetization and the staggered susceptibility to determine the phase diagram in the particle-hole symmetric case. We find that two kinds of magnetically ordered states compete with the Kondo insulating state at zero temperature, which induces non-monotonic behavior in the temperature-dependent magnetization. It is furthermore clarified that a novel magnetic metallic state is stabilized at half filling by the competition between Hund's coupling and the hybridization.

Microscopic Mechanism and Pairing Symmetry of Superconductivity in the Noncentrosymmetric Heavy Fermion Systems CeRhSI$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$

We study the pairing symmetry of the noncentrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductors CeRhSi$_3$ and CeIrSi$_3$ under pressures, which are both antiferromagnets at ambient pressure. We solve the Eliashberg equation by means of the random phase approximation and find that the mixed state of extended s-wave and p-wave rather than the $d+f$ wave state could be realized by enhanced antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. It is elucidated that the gap function has line nodes on the Fermi surface and the resulting density of state in the superconducting state shows a similar character to that of usual d-wave superconductors, resulting in the NMR relaxation rate $1/(T_1T)$ that exhibits no coherence peak and behaves like $1/(T_1T)\propto T^2$ at low temperatures.
