Field induced magnetic order in the frustrated magnet Gadolinium Gallium Garnet

Gd3Ga5O12, (GGG), has an extraordinary magnetic phase diagram, where no long range order is found down to 25 mK despite Θ_CW \approx 2 K. However, long range order is induced by an applied field of around 1 T. Motivated by recent theoretical developments and the experimental results for a closely related hyperkagome system, we have performed neutron diffraction measurements on a single crystal sample of GGG in an applied magnetic field. The measurements reveal that the H-T phase diagram of GGG is much more complicated than previously assumed. The application of an external field at low T results in an intensity change for most of the magnetic peaks which can be divided into three distinct sets: ferromagnetic, commensurate antiferromagnetic, and incommensurate antiferromagnetic. The ferromagnetic peaks (e.g. (112), (440) and (220)) have intensities that increase with the field and saturate at high field. The antiferromagnetic reflections have intensities that grow in low fields, reach a maximum at an intermediate field (apart from the (002) peak which shows two local maxima) and then decrease and disappear above 2 T. These AFM peaks appear, disappear and reach maxima in different fields. We conclude that the competition between magnetic interactions and alternative ground states prevents GGG from ordering in zero field. It is, however, on the verge of ordering and an applied magnetic field can be used to crystallise ordered components. The range of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic propagation vectors found reflects the complex frustration in GGG.

Low-temperature magnetic ordering in SrEr$_2$O$_4$

SrEr$_2$O$_4$ has been characterised by low-temperature powder neutron diffraction, as well as single crystal specific heat and magnetisation measurements. Magnetisation measurements show that the magnetic system is highly anisotropic at temperature above ordering. A magnetic field of 280 kOe applied at $T=1.6$ K does not overcome the anisotropic magnetisation and fails to fully saturate the system. Long range antiferromagnetic ordering develops below $T_N=0.75$ K, identified by magnetic Bragg reflections with propagation vector ${\bf k}=0$ and a lambda anomaly in the specific heat. The magnetic structure consists of ferromagnetic chains running along the \textit{c} axis, two adjacent chains being stacked antiferromagnetically. The moments point along the \textit{c} direction, but only one of the two crystallographically in-equivalent Er sites has a sizeable ordered magnetic moment, 4.5 $\rm μ_B$ at 0.55 K. The magnetic properties of SrEr$_2$O$_4$ are discussed in terms of the interplay between the low-dimensionality, competing exchange interactions, dipolar interactions and low lying crystal field levels.

The nature of the magnetic order in Ca3Co2O6

We present a detailed powder and single crystal neutron diffraction study of the spin chain compound Ca3Co2O6. Below 25 K, the system orders magnetically with a modulated partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. We give a description of the magnetic interactions in the system which is consistent with this magnetic structure. Our study also reveals that the long-range magnetic order co-exists with a shorter range order with a correlation length scale of 180 A in the ab plane. Remarkably, on cooling, the volume of material exhibiting short range order increases at the expense of the long-range order.

Co-existing chiral and collinear phases in a distorted triangular antiferromagnet

The entire magnetic phase diagram of the quasi two dimensional (2D) magnet on a distorted triangular lattice KFe(MoO4)2 is outlined by means of magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements. It is found that the spin network breaks down into two almost independent magnetic subsystems. One subsystem is a collinear antiferromagnet that shows a simple spin-flop behavior in applied fields. The other is a helimagnet that instead goes through a series of exotic commensurate-incommensurate phase transformations. In the various phases one observes either true 3D order or quasi-2D order. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical predictions found in literature

Spin-liquid dynamics of pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7

The spin-liquid phase of two highly frustrated pyrochlore magnets Gd2Ti2O7 and Gd2Sn2O7 is probed using electron spin resonance in the temperature range 1.3 - 30 K. The deviation of the absorption line from the paramagnetic position ν=γH observed in both compounds below the Curie-Weiss temperature Θ_CW ~ 10 K, suggests an opening up of a gap in the excitation spectra. On cooling to 1.3 K (which is above the ordering transition T_N ~ 1.0 K) the resonance spectrum is transformed into a wide band of excitations with the gap amounting to Δ~ 26 GHz (1.2 K) in Gd2Ti2O7 and 18 GHz (0.8 K) in Gd2Sn2O7. The gaps increase linearly with the external magnetic field. For Gd2Ti2O7 this branch co-exists with an additional nearly paramagnetic line absent in Gd2Sn2O7. These low lying excitations with gaps, which are preformed in the spin-liquid state, may be interpreted as collective spin modes split by the single-ion anisotropy.

Magnetic excitations in the Kagome staircase compounds

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on single crystal samples of Co3V2O8 and Ni3V2O8. The magnetic system in these compounds is believed to be frustrated, as the magnetic ions Co2+ with S=3/2 and Ni2+ with S=1 adopt a buckled version of the Kagome lattice. Magnetic excitations have been observed in both samples using a time-of-flight neutron spectrometer. The excitation spectrum is dispersive for both samples and has a considerable gap in the low temperature phases, while the intermediate temperature phases are marked by a significant softening of the excitations energy.

Magnetic phases in the Kagome staircase compound Co3V2O8

The low temperature properties of the Kagome-type system Co3V2O8 have been studied by powder neutron diffraction both in zero field and in applied magnetic field of up to 8 T. Below 6 K, the zero-field ground state is ferromagnetic with the magnetic moments aligned along the a-axis. The size of the moment on one of the two Co sites, the so called cross-tie site, is considerably reduced compared to the fully polarized state. The application of a magnetic field in this phase is found to rapidly enhance the cross-tie site magnetic moment, which reaches the expected value of ~3muB by the maximum applied field of 8 T. Different reorientation behaviors are found for the Co cross-tie and spine sites, suggesting a more pronounced easy-axis anisotropy for moments on the spine sites. Rietveld refinements reveal that a simple model, where the spins on both cross-tie and spine sites rotate in the ac-plane in a magnetic field, reproduces the experimental diffraction patterns well. In addition, it is found that at higher temperatures and moderate magnetic fields, the incommensurate antiferromagnetic order, corresponding to a transverse sinusoidal modulation above 8 K, is suppressed to be replaced by ferromagnetic order.

Magnetic phase diagrams of the Kagome staircase compounds Co3V2O8 and Ni3V2O8

An extensive low temperature magnetisation study of high quality single crystals of the Kagome staircase compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8 has been performed, and the H-T phase diagrams have been determined from these measurements. The magnetisation and susceptibility curves for Co3V2O8 are analysed in terms of their compatibility with the different ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic structures proposed for this compound. For Ni3V2O8, the phase diagram is extended to magnetic fields higher than previously reported; for a field applied along the a-axis, the low temperature incommensurate phase is found to close at around 90 kOe.

Magnetic phase diagram, critical behaviour and 2D-3D crossover in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2

We have studied the magnetic and thermodynamic properties as well as the NMR spectra of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2. The observed temperature dependence of the order parameter, the critical indices and the overall magnetic H-T phase diagram are all in a good agreement with the theoretical predictions for a 2D XY model. The temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperature demonstrates a crossover from a T^2 law characteristic of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet to a three-dimensional T^3 law.

Neutron scattering studies of the spin ices Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in applied magnetic field

Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in single crystals of the spin ice materials Ho2Ti2O7 and Dy2Ti2O7 in an external magnetic field applied along either the [001] or [1-10] crystallographic directions. With the field applied along [001] a long range ordered groundstate is selected from the spin ice manifold. With the field applied along [1-10] the experiments show that the spin system is separated into parallel (alpha) and perpendicular (beta) chains with respect to the field. This leads to partial ordering and the appearance of quasi-one-dimensional magnetic structures. In both field orientations this frustrated spin system is defined by the appearance of metastable states, magnetization plateaux and unusually slow, field regulated dynamics.

Magnetocaloric effect in pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

An adiabatic demagnetization process is studied in Gd2Ti2O7, a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice. In contrast to conventional paramagnetic salts, this compound can exhibit a temperature decrease by a factor of ten in the temperature range below the Curie-Weiss constant. The most efficient cooling is observed in the field interval between 120 and 60 kOe corresponding to a crossover between saturated and spin-liquid phases. This phenomenon indicates that a considerable part of the magnetic entropy survives in the strongly correlated state. According to the theoretical model, this entropy is associated with a macroscopic number of local modes remaining gapless till the saturation field. Monte Carlo simulations on a classical spin model demonstrate good agreement with the experiment. The cooling power of the process is experimentally estimated with a view to possible technical applications. The results for Gd2Ti2O7 are compared to those for Gd3Ga5O12, a well-known material for low temperature magnetic refrigeration.

Neutron Scattering Investigation of the Spin Ice State in Dy2Ti2O7

Dy2Ti2O7 has been advanced as an ideal spin ice. We present a neutron scattering investigation of a sample of 162Dy2Ti2O7. The scattering intensity has been mapped in zero applied field in the hhl and hk0 planes at temperatures between 0.05 K and 20 K. The measured diffuse scattering (in the static approximation) has been compared to that predicted by the dipolar spin ice model. The comparison is good, except at the Brillouin zone boundaries where extra scattering appears in the experimental data. It is concluded that the dipolar spin ice model provides a successful basis for understanding Dy2Ti2O7, but that there are issues which remain to be clarified.

Single crystals of the anisotropic Kagome staircase compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8

Compounds with a Kagome type lattice are known to exhibit magnetic frustration. Large single crystals of two compounds Ni3V2O8 and Co3V2O8, which are variants of a Kagome net lattice, have been grown successfully by the floating zone technique using an optical image furnace. The single crystals are of high quality and exhibit intriguing magnetic properties.

Magnetic phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7

Gd2Ti2O7 is a highly frustrated antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice, where apart from the Heisenberg exchange the spins also interact via dipole-dipole forces. We report on low-temperature specific heat measurements performed on single crystals of Gd2Ti2O7 for three different directions of an applied magnetic field. The measurements reveal the strongly anisotropic behaviour of Gd2Ti2O7 in a magnetic field despite the apparent absence of a significant single-ion anisotropy for Gd3+. The H-T phase diagrams are constructed for H//111], H//[110] and H//[112]. The results indicate that further theoretical work beyond a simple mean-field model is required.

Comment on "Short-range magnetic interactions in the spin-ice compound Ho2Ti2O7"

In their recent communication (Phys. Rev. B 64, 060406(R) (2001)) Cornelius and Gardner have reported the results of magnetization and susceptibility studies on single crystals of the pyrochlore Ho2Ti2O7. The observed field dependence of magnetization is totally unexpected, as it seems to suggest that the magnetic moments in this compound do not obey the 'ice-rule'. We have re-measured the magnetization curves for Ho2Ti2O7 single crystal for the three principal directions of an applied magnetic field and found nearly perfect agreement with the predictions for a nearest-neighbor spin-ice model.

Quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice RbFe(MoO4)2

RbFe(MoO4)2 is a rare example of a nearly two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. Magnetic resonance spectra and magnetization curves reveal that the system has a layered spin structure with six magnetic sublattices. The sublattices within a layer are arranged in a triangular manner with the magnetization vectors 120 degree apart. The H-T phase diagram, containing at least five different magnetic phases is constructed. In zero field, RbFe(MoO4)2 undergoes a phase transition at T_N=3.8 K into a non-collinear triangular spin structure with all the spins confined in the basal plane. The application of an in-plane magnetic field induces a collinear spin state between the fields H_c1=47 kOe and H_c2=71 kOe and produces a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturation moment. Both the ESR and the magnetization measurements also clearly indicate an additional first-order phase transition in a field of 35 kOe. The exact nature of this phase transition is uncertain.

Field-Induced Order and Magnetization Plateaux in Frustrated Antiferromagnets

We argue that collinearly ordered states which exist in strongly frustrated spin systems for special rational values of the magnetization are stabilized by thermal as well as quantum fluctuations. These general predictions are tested by Monte Carlo simulations for the classical and Lanczos diagonalization for the S=1/2 frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet.

Field Induced Partial Order in the Spin-Ice Dysprosium Titanate

Neutron scattering has been used to investigate the magnetic correlations in the the spin ice material dysprosium titanate, Dy2Ti2O7. An isotopically enriched sample was used to minimise neutron absorption. In zero field no magnetic order was observed down to 50 mK but the magnetic diffuse scattering was in qualitative agreement with that expected for the disordered low temperature state of dipolar spin ice. Application of a field of ~ 0.8 T in the [100] direction led to long range order. With the field applied in the [1-10] direction a coexistence of long range ferromagnetic and short range antiferromagnetic order was observed. This is attributed to the pinning of only half the spins by the field. The hysteresis loops in both field orientations displayed unusual steps and plateaus.
