Classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a garnet lattice: a Monte Carlo simulation

We have studied a classical antiferromagnet on a garnet lattice by means of Monte Carlo simulations in an attempt to examine the role of geometrical frustration in Gadolinium Gallium Garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG). Low-temperature specific heat, magnetisation, susceptibility, the autocorrelation function A(t) and the neutron scattering function S(Q) have been calculated for several models including different types of magnetic interactions and with the presence of an external magnetic field applied along the principal symmetry axes. A model, which includes only nearest-neighbour exchange, J1, neither orders down to the lowest temperature nor does it show any tendency towards forming a short-range coplanar spin structure. This model, however, does demonstrate a magnetic field induced ordering below T ~ 0.01 J1. In order to reproduce the experimentally observed properties of GGG, the simulated model must include nearest neighbour exchange interactions and also dipolar forces. The presence of weak next-to-nearest exchange interactions is found to be insignificant. In zero field S(Q) exhibits diffuse magnetic scattering around positions in reciprocal space where antiferromagnetic Bragg peaks appear in an applied magnetic field.

High Magnetic Field Behaviour of the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet, CuFeO_2

The high magnetic field behaviour of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO_2 is studied using single crystal neutron diffraction measurements in a field of up to 14.5 T and also by magnetisation measurements in a field of up to 12 T. At low temperature, two well-defined first order magnetic phase transitions are found in this range of applied magnetic field (H // c): at H_c1=7.6(3)/7.1(3) T and H_c2=13.2(1)/12.7(1) T when ramping the field up/down. In a field above H_c2 the magnetic Bragg peaks show unusual history dependence. In zero field T_N1=14.2(1) K separates a high temperature paramagnetic and an intermediate incommensurate structure, while T_N2=11.1(3) K divides an incommensurate phase from the low-temperature 4-sublattice ground state. The ordering temperature T_N1 is found to be almost field independent, while T_N2 decreases noticeably in applied field. The magnetic phase diagram is discussed in terms of the interactions between an applied magnetic field and the highly frustrated magnetic structure of CuFeO_2

Field induced ordering in highly frustrated antiferromagnets

We predict that an external field can induce a spin order in highly frustrated classical Heisenberg magnets. We find analytically stabilization of collinear states by thermal fluctuations at a one-third of the saturation field for kagome and garnet lattices and at a half of the saturation field for pyrochlore and frustrated square lattices. This effect is studied numerically for the frustrated square-lattice antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations for classical spins and by exact diagonalization for $S=1/2$. The field induced collinear states have a spin gap and produce magnetization plateaus.

Electron-spin-resonance in the doped spin-Peierls compound Cu(1-x)Ni(x)GeO3

ESR-study of the Ni-doped spin-Peierls compound CuGeO3 has been performed in the frequency range 9-75 GHz. At low temperatures the g-factor is smaller than the value expected for Cu- and Ni-ions. This anomaly is explained by the formation of magnetic clusters around the Ni-ions within a nonmagnetic spin-Peierls matrix. The transition into the AFM-state detected earlier by neutron scattering for doped samples was studied by means of ESR. For x=0.032 a gap in the magnetic resonance spectrum is found below the Neel temperature and the spectrum is well described by the theory of antiferromagnetic resonance based on the molecular field approximation. For x=0.017 the spectrum below the Neel point remained gapless. The gapless spectrum of the antiferromagnetic state in weekly doped samples is attributed to the small value of the Neel order parameter and to the magnetically disordered spin-Peierls background.

Triangular Antiferromagnets

In this article we review the effects of magnetic frustation in the stacked triangular lattice. Frustration increases the degeneracy of the ground state, giving rise to different physics. In particular it leads to unique phase diagrams with multicritical points and novel critical phenomena. We describe the confrontation of theory and experiment for a number of systems with differing magnetic Hamiltonians; Heisenberg, Heisenberg with easy-axis anisotropy, Heisenberg with easy-plane anisotropy, Ising and singlet ground state. Interestingly each leads to different magnetic properties and phase diagrams. We also describe the effects of ferromagnetic, rather than antiferromagnetic, stacking and of small distortions of the triangular lattice.

Enhancement of Anisotropy due to Fluctuations in Quasi-One-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

It is shown that the observed anisotropy of magnetization at high magnetic fields in RbMnBr3 , a quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet on a distorted stacked triangular lattice, is due to quantum and thermal fluctuations. These fluctuations are taken into account in the framework of linear spin-wave theory in the region of strong magnetic fields. In this region the divergent one-dimensional integrals are cut off by magnetic field and the bare easy-plane anisotropy. Logarithmical dependence on the cutoff leads to the "enhancement" of the anisotropy in magnetization. Comparison between magnetization data and our theory with parameters obtained from neutron scattering experiments has been done.
