Exact Results for Ionization of Model Atomic Systems

We present rigorous results for quantum systems with both bound and continuum states subjected to an arbitrary strength time-periodic field. We prove that the wave function takes the form of a sum of time-periodic resonant states with complex quasi-energies and dispersive part of the the solution given by a power series in t^{-1/2}. Generally, the imaginary part of each resonance is negative, leading to ionization of the atom, but we also give examples where the ionization rate is zero implying the existence of a time-periodic Floquet bound state. The complex quasi-energy has a convergent perturbation expansion for small field strengths.

Ionization in a 1-Dimensional Dipole Model

We study the evolution of a one dimensional model atom with $δ$-function binding potential, subjected to a dipole radiation field $E(t) x$ with $E(t)$ a $2π/ω$-periodic real-valued function. Starting with $ψ(x,t=0)$ an initially localized state and $E(t)$ a trigonometric polynomial, complete ionization occurs; the probability of finding the electron in any fixed region goes to zero. For $ψ(x,0)$ compactly supported and general periodic fields, we construct a resonance expansion. Each resonance is given explicitly as a Gamow vector, and is $2π/ω$ periodic in time and behaves like the exponentially growing Green's function near $x=\pm \infty$. The remainder is given by an asymptotic power series in $t^{-1/2}$ with coefficients varying with $x$.

Borel summability of Navier-Stokes equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and small time existence

We consider the Navier-Stokes initial value problem, $$v_t - \nabla v = -\mathcal{P} [ v \cdot \nabla v \right ] + f, v(x, 0) = v_0 (x), x \in \mathbb{R}^3 $$ where $\mathcal{P}$ is the Hodge-Projection to divergence free vector fields in the assumption that $ | f |_{μ, β} < \infty $ and $| v_0 |_{μ+2, β} < \infty$ for $β\ge 0, μ> 3$, where $$ | {\hat f} (k) | = \sup_{k \in \mathbb{R}^3} e^{β|k|} (1+|k|)^μ| {\hat f} (k) |$$ and ${\hat{f}} (k) = \mathcal{F} [f (\cdot)] (k) $ is the Fourier transform in $x$. By Borel summation methods we show that there exists a classical solution in the form $$ v(x, t) = v_0 + \int_0^\infty e^{-p/t} U(x, p) dp $$ $t\in\CC$, $ \Re \frac{1}{t} > α$, and we estimate $α$ in terms of $| {\hat v}_0 |_{μ+2, β}$ and $ | {\hat f} |_{μ, β}$. We show that $| {\hat v} (\cdot; t) |_{μ+2, β} < \infty $. Existence and $t$-analyticity results are analogous to Sobolev spaces ones. An important feature of the present approach is that continuation of $v$ beyond $t=α^{-1}$ becomes a growth rate question of $U(\cdot, p)$ as $ p \to \infty$, $U$ being is a known function. For now, our estimate is likely suboptimal. A second result is that we show Borel summability of $v$ for $v_0$ and $f$ analytic. In particular, we obtain Gevrey-1 asymptotics results: $ v \sim v_0 + \sum_{m=1}^\infty v_m t^m $, where $ |v_m | \le m! A_0 B_0^m$, with $A_0$ and $B_0$ are given in terms of to $v_0$ and $f$ and for small $t$, with $m(t)=\lfloor B_0^{-1}t^{-1}\rfloor$, $$ | v(x, t) - v_0 (x) - \sum_{m=1}^{m(t)} v_m (x) t^m | \le A_0 m(t)^{1/2} e^{-m(t)} $$

Nonperturbative analysis of a model quantum system under time periodic forcing

We analyze the time evolution of a one-dimensional quantum system with an attractive delta function potential whose strength is subjected to a time periodic (zero mean) parametric variation. We show that for generic forcing which includes the sum of any finite number of harmonics, the system, started in a bound state will get fully ionized for large t irrespective of the magnitude or frequency of the forcing. There are however exceptional, very non-generic forcings that do not lead to full ionization. These include rather simple explicit periodic forcings for which the system evolves to a nontrivial localized stationary state related to eigenfunctions of the Floquet operator.

Exact Results for the Ionization of a Model Quantum System

We prove that a model atom having one bound state will be fully ionized by a time periodic potential of arbitrary strength r and frequency omega. Starting with the system in the bound state, the survival probability is for small r given by exp(-Gamma t) for times of order GAMMA^(-1)~r^(-2n) where n is the minimum number of 'photons' required for ionization (with large modifications at resonances). For late times the decay is as t^(-3) with the power law modulated by oscillations. As r increases, the time over which there is exponential decay becomes shorter and the power law behaviour starts earlier. Results are for a parametrically excited one-dimensional system with zero-range potential but comparison with analyticalworks and with experiments indicates that many features are general.

On Borel summation and Stokes phenomena of nonlinear differential systems

In this paper we study analytic (linear or) nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations, at an irregular singularity of rank one, under nonresonance conditions. It is shown that the formal asymptotic exponential series solutions (transseries solutions: countable linear combinations of formal power series multiplied by small exponentials) are Borel summable in a generalized sense along any direction in which the exponentials decay. Conversely, any solution that decreases along some direction is the Borel sum of a transseries. The summation procedure introduced is an extension of Borel summation which is linear, multiplicative, commutes with differentiation and complex conjugation. The summation algorithm uses the formal solutions alone (and not the differential equation that they solve). Along singular (Stokes) directions, the functions reconstructed by summation are shown to be given by Laplace integrals along special paths, a subset of Ecalle's median paths. The one-to-one correspondence established between actual solutions and generalized Borel sums of transseries is constant between Stokes lines and changes if a Stokes line is crossed (local Stokes phenomenon). We analyze the connection between local and classical Stokes phenomena.

Optimal uniform estimates and rigorous asymptotics beyond all orders for a class of ODE's

For first order differential equations of the form $y'=\sum_{p=0}^P F_p(x)y^p$ and second order homogeneous linear differential equations $y''+a(x)y'+b(x)y=0$ with locally integrable coefficients having asymptotic (possibly divergent) power series when $|x|\to\infty$ on a ray $\arg(x)=$const, under some further assumptions, it is shown that, on the given ray, there is a one-to-one correspondence between true solutions and (complete) formal solutions. The correspondence is based on asymptotic inequalities which are required to be uniform in $x$ and optimal with respect to certain weights.

Rigorous WKB for finite order linear recurrence relations with smooth coefficients

We study the $ε\to 0$ behavior of recurrence relations of the type $\sum_{j=0}^l a_j(kε,ε)y_{k+j}=0,$ $k\in \zdd$ ($l$ fixed). The $a_j$ are $C^{\infty}$ functions in each variable on $I\times [0,\e_0]$ for a bounded interval $I$ and $\e_0>0$. Under certain regularity assumptions we find the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of such recurrences. In typical cases there exists a fundamental set of solutions in the form $\{\exp(\epi F_m(kε,ε))\}_{m=1... l}$ where the functions $F_m$ are $C^{\infty}$ in each variable on the same domain as the $a_j$, showing in particular that the formal perturbation-series solutions are asymptotic to true solutions of these recurrences. Some applications are also briefly discussed.

Exponential asymptotics, transseries, and generalized Borel summation for analytic rank one systems of ODE's

For analytic nonlinear systems of ordinary differential equations, under some non-degeneracy and integrability conditions we prove that the formal exponential series solutions (trans-series) at an irregular singularity of rank one are Borel summable (in a sense similar to that of Ecalle). The functions obtained by re-summation of the trans-series are precisely the solutions of the differential equation that decay in a specified sector in the complex plane. We find the dependence of the correspondence between the solutions of the differential equation and trans-series as the ray in the complex plane changes (local Stokes phenomenon). We study, in addition, the general solution in $\lloc$ of the convolution equations corresponding, by inverse Laplace transform, to the given system of ODE's, and its analytic properties. Simple analytic identities lead to ``resurgence'' relations and to an averaging formula having, in addition to the properties of the medianization of Ecalle, the property of preserving exponential growth at infinity.

On optimal truncation of divergent series solutions of nonlinear differential systems; Berry smoothing

We prove that for divergent series solutions of nonlinear (or linear) differential systems near a generic irregular singularity, the common prescription of summation to the least term is, if properly interpreted, meaningful and correct, and we extend this method to transseries solutions. In every direction in the complex plane at the singularity (Stokes directions {\em not} excepted) there exists a nonempty set of solutions whose difference from the ``optimally'' (i.e., near the least term) truncated asymptotic series is of the same (exponentially small) order of magnitude as the least term of the series. There is a family of generalized Borel summation formulas $\mathcal{B}$ which commute with the usual algebraic and analytic operations (addition, multiplication, differentiation, etc). We show that there is exactly one of them, $\mathcal{B}_0$, such that for any formal series solution $\tilde{f}$, $\mathcal{B}_0(\tilde{f})$ differs from the optimal truncation of $\tilde{f}$ by at most the order of the least term of $\tilde{f}$. We show in addition that the Berry (1989) smoothing phenomenon is universal within this class of differential systems. Whenever the terms ``beyond all orders'' {\em change} in crossing a Stokes line, these terms vary smoothly on the Berry scale $\arg(x)\sim |x|^{-1/2}$ and the transition is always given by the error function; under the same conditions we show that Dingle's rule of signs for Stokes transitions holds.

Analytic methods for obstruction to integrability in discrete dynamical systems

A unique analytic continuation result is proved for solutions of a relatively general class of difference equations, using techniques of generalized Borel summability. This continuation allows for Painlevé property methods to be extended to difference equations. It is shown that the Painlevé property (PP) induces, under relatively general assumptions, a dichotomy within first order difference equations: all equations with PP can be solved in closed form; on the contrary, absence of PP implies, under some further assumptions, that the local conserved quantities are strictly local in the sense that they develop singularity barriers on the boundary of some compact set. The technique produces analytic formulas to describe fractal sets originating in polynomial iterations.

Topological construction of transseries and introduction to generalized Borel summability

Transseries in the sense of Écalle are constructed using a topological approach. A general contractive mapping principle is formulated and proved, showing the closure of transseries under a wide class of operations. In the second part we give an overview of results and methods reconstruction of actual functions and solutions of equations from transseries by generalized Borel summation with in ordinary and partial differential and difference equations.

Borel summation of adiabatic invariants

Borel summation techniques are developed to obtain exact invariants from formal adiabatic invariants (given as divergent series in a small parameter) for a class of differential equations, under assumptions of analyticity of the coefficients; the method relies on the study of associated partial differential equations in the complex plane. The type and location of the singularities of these associated functions, important in determining exponentially small corrections to formal invariants are also briefly discussed.

Movable singularities of solutions of difference equations in relation to solvability and a study of a superstable fixed point

A unique analytic continuation result is proven for solutions of a relatively general class of difference equations by using techniques of generalized Borel summability. We overview applications exponential asymptotics and analyzable function theory to difference equations, in defining an analog of the Painlevé property for them and we sketch the conclusions with respect to the solvability properties of first order autonomous ones. It turns out that if the Painlevé property is present the equations are explicitly solvable and in the contrary case, under further assumptions, the integrals of motion develop singularity barriers. We apply the method to the logistic map $x_{n+1}=ax_n(1-x_n)$ where it turns out that the only cases with the Painlevé property are $a=-2, 0, 2$ and 4 for which explicit solutions indeed exist; in the opposite case an associated conjugation map develops singularity barriers.

On the formation of singularities of solutions of nonlinear differential systems in antistokes directions

We determine the position and the type of spontaneous singularities of solutions of generic analytic nonlinear differential systems in the complex plane, arising along antistokes directions towards irregular singular points of the system. Placing the singularity of the system at infinity we look at equations of the form $\mathbf{y}'=\mathbf{f}(x^{-1},\mathbf{y})$ with $\mathbf{f}$ analytic in a neighborhood of $(0,\mathbf{0})$, with genericity assumptions; $x=\infty$ is then a rank one singular point. We analyze the singularities of those solutions $\mathbf{y}(x)$ which tend to zero for $x\to \infty$ in some sectorial region, on the edges of the maximal region (also described) with this property. After standard normalization of the differential system, it is shown that singularities occuring in antistokes directions are grouped in nearly periodical arrays of similar singularities as $x\to\infty$, the location of the array depending on the solution while the (near-) period and type of singularity are determined by the form of the differential system.
