Perturbative connection formulas for Heun equations

Connection formulas relating Frobenius solutions of linear ODEs at different Fuchsian singular points can be expressed in terms of the large order asymptotics of the corresponding power series. We demonstrate that for the usual, confluent and reduced confluent Heun equation, the series expansion of the relevant asymptotic amplitude in a suitable parameter can be systematically computed to arbitrary order. This allows to check a recent conjecture of Bonelli-Iossa-Panea Lichtig-Tanzini expressing the Heun connection matrix in terms of quasiclassical Virasoro conformal blocks.

Accessory parameters in confluent Heun equations and classical irregular conformal blocks

Classical Virasoro conformal blocks are believed to be directly related to accessory parameters of Floquet type in the Heun equation and some of its confluent versions. We extend this relation to another class of accessory parameter functions that are defined by inverting all-order Bohr-Sommerfeld periods for confluent and biconfluent Heun equation. The relevant conformal blocks involve Nagoya irregular vertex operators of rank 1 and 2 and conjecturally correspond to partition functions of a 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$, $N_f=3$ gauge theory at strong coupling and an Argyres-Douglas theory.

On self-similar solutions of the vortex filament equation

We study self-similar solutions of the binormal curvature flow which governs the evolution of vortex filaments and is equivalent to the Landau-Lifshitz equation. The corresponding dynamics is described by the real solutions of $σ$-Painlevé IV equation with two real parameters. Connection formulae for Painlevé IV transcendents allow for a complete characterization of the asymptotic properties of the curvature and torsion of the filament. We also provide compact hypergeometric expressions for self-similar solutions corresponding to corner initial conditions.

Fredholm determinant and Nekrasov sum representations of isomonodromic tau functions

We derive Fredholm determinant representation for isomonodromic tau functions of Fuchsian systems with $n$ regular singular points on the Riemann sphere and generic monodromy in $\mathrm{GL}(N,\mathbb C)$. The corresponding operator acts in the direct sum of $N(n-3)$ copies of $L^2(S^1)$. Its kernel has a block integrable form and is expressed in terms of fundamental solutions of $n-2$ elementary 3-point Fuchsian systems whose monodromy is determined by monodromy of the relevant $n$-point system via a decomposition of the punctured sphere into pairs of pants. For $N=2$ these building blocks have hypergeometric representations, the kernel becomes completely explicit and has Cauchy type. In this case Fredholm determinant expansion yields multivariate series representation for the tau function of the Garnier system, obtained earlier via its identification with Fourier transform of Liouville conformal block (or a dual Nekrasov-Okounkov partition function). Further specialization to $n=4$ gives a series representation of the general solution to Painlevé VI equation.

Monodromy dependence and connection formulae for isomonodromic tau functions

We discuss an extension of the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential 1-form to a form closed on the full space of extended monodromy data of systems of linear ordinary differential equations with rational coefficients. This extension is based on the results of M. Bertola generalizing a previous construction by B. Malgrange. We show how this 1-form can be used to solve a long-standing problem of evaluation of the connection formulae for the isomonodromic tau functions which would include an explicit computation of the relevant constant factors. We explain how this scheme works for Fuchsian systems and, in particular, calculate the connection constant for generic Painlevé VI tau function. The result proves the conjectural formula for this constant proposed in \cite{ILT13}. We also apply the method to non-Fuchsian systems and evaluate constant factors in the asymptotics of Painlevé II tau function.

Irregular conformal blocks and connection formulae for Painlevé V functions

We prove a Fredholm determinant and short-distance series representation of the Painlevé V tau function $τ(t)$ associated to generic monodromy data. Using a relation of $τ(t)$ to two different types of irregular $c=1$ Virasoro conformal blocks and the confluence from Painlevé VI equation, connection formulas between the parameters of asymptotic expansions at $0$ and $i\infty$ are conjectured. Explicit evaluations of the connection constants relating the tau function asymptotics as $t\to 0,+\infty,i\infty$ are obtained. We also show that irregular conformal blocks of rank 1, for arbitrary central charge, are obtained as confluent limits of the regular conformal blocks.

Higher rank isomonodromic deformations and W-algebras

We construct the general solution of a class of Fuchsian systems of rank $N$ as well as the associated isomonodromic tau functions in terms of semi-degenerate conformal blocks of $W_N$-algebra with central charge $c=N-1$. The simplest example is given by the tau function of the Fuji-Suzuki-Tsuda system, expressed as a Fourier transform of the 4-point conformal block with respect to intermediate weight. Along the way, we generalize the result of Bowcock and Watts on the minimal set of matrix elements of vertex operators of the $W_N$-algebra for generic central charge and prove several properties of semi-degenerate vertex operators and conformal blocks for $c=N-1$.

Tau functions as Widom constants

We define a tau function for a generic Riemann-Hilbert problem posed on a union of non-intersecting smooth closed curves with jump matrices analytic in their neighborhood. The tau function depends on parameters of the jumps and is expressed as the Fredholm determinant of an integral operator with block integrable kernel constructed in terms of elementary parametrices. Its logarithmic derivatives with respect to parameters are given by contour integrals involving these parametrices and the solution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the case of one circle, the tau function coincides with Widom's determinant arising in the asymptotics of block Toeplitz matrices. Our construction gives the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function for Riemann-Hilbert problems of isomonodromic origin (Painlevé VI, V, III, Garnier system, etc) and the Sato-Segal-Wilson tau function for integrable hierarchies such as Gelfand-Dickey and Drinfeld-Sokolov.

Pure $SU(2)$ gauge theory partition function and generalized Bessel kernel

We show that the dual partition function of the pure $\mathcal N=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory in the self-dual $Ω$-background (a) is given by Fredholm determinant of a generalized Bessel kernel and (b) coincides with the tau function associated to the general solution of the Painlevé III equation of type $D_8$ (radial sine-Gordon equation). In particular, the principal minor expansion of the Fredholm determinant yields Nekrasov combinatorial sums over pairs of Young diagrams.

On the connection problem for Painlevé I

We study the dependence of the tau function of Painlevé I equation on the generalized monodromy of the associated linear problem. In particular, we compute connection constants relating the tau function asymptotics on five canonical rays at infinity. The result is expressed in terms of dilogarithms of cluster type coordinates on the space of Stokes data.

Isomonodromic tau-functions from Liouville conformal blocks

The goal of this note is to show that the Riemann-Hilbert problem to find multivalued analytic functions with $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-valued monodromy on Riemann surfaces of genus zero with $n$ punctures can be solved by taking suitable linear combinations of the conformal blocks of Liouville theory at $c=1$. This implies a similar representation for the isomonodromic tau-function. In the case $n=4$ we thereby get a proof of the relation between tau-functions and conformal blocks discovered in \cite{GIL}. We briefly discuss a possible application of our results to the study of relations between certain $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories and conformal field theory.

Connection problem for the sine-Gordon/Painlevé III tau function and irregular conformal blocks

The short-distance expansion of the tau function of the radial sine-Gordon/Painlevé III equation is given by a convergent series which involves irregular $c=1$ conformal blocks and possesses certain periodicity properties with respect to monodromy data. The long-distance irregular expansion exhibits a similar periodicity with respect to a different pair of coordinates on the monodromy manifold. This observation is used to conjecture an exact expression for the connection constant providing relative normalization of the two series. Up to an elementary prefactor, it is given by the generating function of the canonical transformation between the two sets of coordinates.

Painlevé VI connection problem and monodromy of c=1 conformal blocks

Generic c=1 four-point conformal blocks on the Riemann sphere can be seen as the coefficients of Fourier expansion of the tau function of Painlevé VI equation with respect to one of its integration constants. Based on this relation, we show that c=1 fusion matrix essentially coincides with the connection coefficient relating tau function asymptotics at different critical points. Explicit formulas for both quantities are obtained by solving certain functional relations which follow from the tau function expansions. The final result does not involve integration and is given by a ratio of two products of Barnes G-functions with arguments expressed in terms of conformal dimensions/monodromy data. It turns out to be closely related to the volume of hyperbolic tetrahedron.

How instanton combinatorics solves Painlevé VI, V and III's

We elaborate on a recently conjectured relation of Painlevé transcendents and 2D CFT. General solutions of Painlevé VI, V and III are expressed in terms of $c=1$ conformal blocks and their irregular limits, AGT-related to instanton partition functions in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories with $N_f=0,1,2,3,4$. Resulting combinatorial series representations of Painlevé functions provide an efficient tool for their numerical computation at finite values of the argument. The series involve sums over bipartitions which in the simplest cases coincide with Gessel expansions of certain Toeplitz determinants. Considered applications include Fredholm determinants of classical integrable kernels, scaled gap probability in the bulk of the GUE, and all-order conformal perturbation theory expansions of correlation functions in the sine-Gordon field theory at the free-fermion point.

Conformal field theory of Painlevé VI

Generic Painlevé VI tau function τ(t) can be interpreted as four-point correlator of primary fields of arbitrary dimensions in 2D CFT with c=1. Using AGT combinatorial representation of conformal blocks and determining the corresponding structure constants, we obtain full and completely explicit expansion of τ(t) near the singular points. After a check of this expansion, we discuss examples of conformal blocks arising from Riccati, Picard, Chazy and algebraic solutions of Painlevé VI.

Form factors of twist fields in the lattice Dirac theory

We study U(1) twist fields in a two-dimensional lattice theory of massive Dirac fermions. Factorized formulas for finite-lattice form factors of these fields are derived using elliptic parametrization of the spectral curve of the model, elliptic determinant identities and theta functional interpolation. We also investigate the thermodynamic and the infinite-volume scaling limit, where the corresponding expressions reduce to form factors of the exponential fields of the sine-Gordon model at the free-fermion point.

Finite-lattice form factors in free-fermion models

We consider the general $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric free-fermion model on the finite periodic lattice, which includes as special cases the Ising model on the square and triangular lattices and $\mathbb{Z}_n$-symmetric BBS $τ^{(2)}$-model with $n=2$. Translating Kaufman's fermionic approach to diagonalization of Ising-like transfer matrices into the language of Grassmann integrals, we determine the transfer matrix eigenvectors and observe that they coincide with the eigenvectors of a square lattice Ising transfer matrix. This allows to find exact finite-lattice form factors of spin operators for the statistical model and the associated finite-length quantum chains, of which the most general is equivalent to the XY chain in a transverse field.

Ising correlations and elliptic determinants

Correlation functions of the two-dimensional Ising model on the periodic lattice can be expressed in terms of form factors - matrix elements of the spin operator in the basis of common eigenstates of the transfer matrix and translation operator. Free-fermion structure of the model implies that any multiparticle form factor is given by the pfaffian of a matrix constructed from the two-particle ones. Crossed two-particle form factors can be obtained by inverting a block of the matrix of linear transformation induced on fermions by the spin conjugation. We show that the corresponding matrix is of elliptic Cauchy type and use this observation to solve the inversion problem explicitly. Non-crossed two-particle form factors are then obtained using theta functional interpolation formulas. This gives a new simple proof of the factorized formulas for periodic Ising form factors, conjectured by A. Bugrij and one of the authors.
