Energy Efficiency Maximization in RIS-Aided Cell-Free Network with Limited Backhaul

Integrating the reconfigurable intelligent surface in a cell-free (RIS-CF) network is an effective solution to improve the capacity and coverage of future wireless systems with low cost and power consumption. The reflecting coefficients of RISs can be programmed to enhance signals received at users. This letter addresses a joint design of transmit beamformers at access points and reflecting coefficients at RISs to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of RIS-CF networks, taking into account the limited backhaul capacity constraints. Due to a very computationally challenging nonconvex problem, we develop a simple yet efficient alternating descent algorithm for its solution. Numerical results verify that the EE of RIS-CF networks is greatly improved, showing the benefit of using RISs.

Secrecy Performance of Small-Cell Networks with Transmitter Selection and Unreliable Backhaul under Spectrum Sharing Environment

We investigate the secrecy performance of an underlay small-cell cognitive radio network under unreliable backhaul connections. The small-cell network shares the same spectrum with the primary network, ensuring that a desired outage probability constraint is always met in the primary network. {To improve the security of the small-cell cognitive network, we propose three sub-optimal small-cell transmitter selection schemes,} namely sub-optimal transmitter selection, minimal interference selection, and minimal eavesdropping selection. Closed-form expressions of the non-zero secrecy rate, secrecy outage probability, and ergodic secrecy capacity are provided for the schemes along with asymptotic expressions. {We also propose an optimal selection scheme and compare performances with the sub-optimal selection schemes.} {Computable expressions for the non-zero secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability are presented for the optimal selection scheme.} Our results show that by increasing the primary transmitter's power and the number of small-cell transmitters, the system performance improves. The selection scheme, the backhaul reliability, and the primary user quality-of-service constraint also have a significant impact on secrecy performance.

Deep Learning based Channel Extrapolation for Large-Scale Antenna Systems: Opportunities, Challenges and Solutions

With the depletion of spectrum, wireless communication systems turn to exploit large antenna arrays to achieve the degree of freedom in space domain, such as millimeter wave massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted communications and cell-free massive MIMO. In these systems, how to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) is difficult and becomes a bottleneck of the communication links. In this article, we introduce the concept of channel extrapolation that relies on a small portion of channel parameters to infer the remaining channel parameters. Since the substance of channel extrapolation is a mapping from one parameter subspace to another, we can resort to deep learning (DL), a powerful learning architecture, to approximate such mapping function. Specifically, we first analyze the requirements, conditions and challenges for channel extrapolation. Then, we present three typical extrapolations over the antenna dimension, the frequency dimension, and the physical terminal, respectively. We also illustrate their respective principles, design challenges and DL strategies. It will be seen that channel extrapolation could greatly reduce the transmission overhead and subsequently enhance the performance gains compared with the traditional strategies. In the end, we provide several potential research directions on channel extrapolation for future intelligent communications systems.

Recurrent Neural Network Assisted Transmitter Selection for Secrecy in Cognitive Radio Network

In this paper, we apply the long short-term memory (LSTM), an advanced recurrent neural network based machine learning (ML) technique, to the problem of transmitter selection (TS) for secrecy in an underlay small-cell cognitive radio network with unreliable backhaul connections. The cognitive communication scenario under consideration has a secondary small-cell network that shares the same spectrum of the primary network with an agreement to always maintain a desired outage probability constraint in the primary network. Due to the interference from the secondary transmitter common to all primary transmissions, the secrecy rates for the different transmitters are correlated. LSTM exploits this correlation and matches the performance of the conventional technique when the number of transmitters is small. As the number grows, the performance degrades in the same manner as other ML techniques such as support vector machine, $k$-nearest neighbors, naive Bayes, and deep neural network. However, LSTM still significantly outperforms these techniques in misclassification ratio and secrecy outage probability. It also reduces the feedback overhead against conventional TS.

Performance Analysis of RIS-Based nT-FSO Link Over G-G Turbulence With Pointing Errors

One of the main problems faced by communication systems is the presence of skip-zones in the targeted areas. With the deployment of the fifth-generation mobile network, solutions are proposed to solve the signal loss due to obstruction by buildings, mountains, and atmospheric or weather conditions. Among these solutions, re-configurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), which are newly proposed modules, may be exploited to reflect the incident signal in the direction of dead zones, increase communication coverage, and make the channel smarter and controllable. In this paper, we tackle the skip-zone problem in near-terrestrial free-space optical (nT-FSO) systems using RIS. We carry out a performance analysis of RIS-aided nT-FSO links affected by turbulence and pointing errors, for both heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation-direct detection (IM/DD) techniques. Turbulence is modeled using the Gamma-Gamma (G-G) distribution. We analyze the model and provide exact closed-form expressions of the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, and moment generating function of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio, $γ$. Capitalizing on these statistics, we evaluate the system performance through the outage probability, $ P_{out} $, ergodic channel capacity, $\overline{C}$, and average bit-error-rate, $\overline{P}_b$, for selected binary modulation schemes. Numerical results obtained for different turbulence levels and pointing errors confirm that the HD technique outperforms IM/DD even in RIS-aided nT-FSO systems. These results also show that using a blue color offers better channel capacity and communication performance compared to red and green colors.

Re-configurable Intelligent Surface-based VLC Receivers Using Tunable Liquid-crystals: The Concept

Visible light communication (VLC) enables access to huge unlicensed bandwidth, a higher security level, and no radio frequency interference. With these advantages, VLC emerges as a complementary solution to radio frequency communications. VLC systems have primarily been designed for indoor scenarios with typical transmission distances between 2 and 5 m. Different designs would be required for larger distances. This paper proposes for the first time the use of a liquid crystal (LC)-based re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS) on improving the VLC signal detection and transmission range. An LC-based RIS presents multiple advantages, including the tunability of its photo-refractive parameters. Another advantage is its light amplification capabilities when under the influence of an externally applied field. In this paper, we analyze an LC-based RIS structure to amplify the detected light and improve the VLC signal detection and transmission range. Results show that mixing LC with 4 to 8 wt\% concentration of a dye such as the terthiophene (3T-2MB) improves the VLC transmission range of about 0.20 to 1.08 m. This improvement can reach 6.56 m if we combine 8 wt\% concentration of 3T-2MB and 0.1 wt\% concentration of trinitrofluorenone.

Exploiting Deep Learning for Secure Transmission in an Underlay Cognitive Radio Network

This paper investigates a machine learning-based power allocation design for secure transmission in a cognitive radio (CR) network. In particular, a neural network (NN)-based approach is proposed to maximize the secrecy rate of the secondary receiver under the constraints of total transmit power of secondary transmitter, and the interference leakage to the primary receiver, within which three different regularization schemes are developed. The key advantage of the proposed algorithm over conventional approaches is the capability to solve the power allocation problem with both perfect and imperfect channel state information. In a conventional setting, two completely different optimization frameworks have to be designed, namely the robust and non-robust designs. Furthermore, conventional algorithms are often based on iterative techniques, and hence, they require a considerable number of iterations, rendering them less suitable in future wireless networks where there are very stringent delay constraints. To meet the unprecedented requirements of future ultra-reliable low-latency networks, we propose an NN-based approach that can determine the power allocation in a CR network with significantly reduced computational time and complexity. As this trained NN only requires a small number of linear operations to yield the required power allocations, the approach can also be extended to different delay sensitive applications and services in future wireless networks. When evaluate the proposed method versus conventional approaches, using a suitable test set, the proposed approach can achieve more than 94% of the secrecy rate performance with less than 1% computation time and more than 93% satisfaction of interference leakage constraints. These results are obtained with significant reduction in computational time, which we believe that it is suitable for future real-time wireless applications.

Ordinary Differential Equation-based CNN for Channel Extrapolation over RIS-assisted Communication

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as a promising new technology for reconfiguring wireless communication environments. To acquire the channel information accurately and efficiently, we only turn on a fraction of all the RIS elements, formulate a sub-sampled RIS channel, and design a deep learning based scheme to extrapolate the full channel information from the partial one. Specifically, inspired by the ordinary differential equation (ODE), we set up connections between different data layers in a convolutional neural network (CNN) and improve its structure. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that our proposed ODE-based CNN structure can achieve faster convergence speed and better solution than the cascaded CNN.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Uplink Sparse Code Multiple Access

Reconfigurable intelligent surface-empowered communication (RIS) and sparse code multiple access (SCMA) are promising candidates for future generations of wireless networks. The former enhances the transmission environments, whereas the latter provides a high spectral efficiency transmission. This letter proposes, for the first time, an RIS-assisted uplink SCMA (SCMA-RIS) scheme to improve the conventional SCMA spectrum efficiency. The message passing algorithm (MPA) is utilized and modified to decode the SCMA-RIS transmitted signals. Moreover, a low-complexity decoder for the SCMA-RIS scheme is proposed to significantly reduce the MPA decoding complexity and improve the bit error rate performance of the conventional SCMA. Monte-Carlo simulations and complexity analysis are presented, which support the findings.

Full-Duplex Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Cooperative Overlay Spectrum-Sharing Networks with SWIPT

This paper proposes a novel non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted cooperative spectrum sharing network, in which one of the full-duplex (FD) secondary transmitters (STs) is chosen among many for forwarding the primary transmitter's and its own information to primary receiver and secondary receivers, respectively, using NOMA technique. To stimulate the ST to conduct cooperative transmission and sustain its operations, the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) technique is utilized by the ST to harvest the primary signal's energy. In order to evaluate the proposed system's performance, the outage probability and system throughput for the primary and secondary networks are derived in tight closed-form approximations. Further, the sum rate optimization problem is formulated for the proposed cooperative network and a rapid convergent iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the optimized power allocation coefficients. Numerical results show that FD, SWIPT, and NOMA techniques greatly boost the performance of cooperative spectrum-sharing network in terms of outage probability, system throughput, and sum rate compared to that of half-duplex NOMA and the conventional orthogonal multiple access-time division multiple access networks.

Learning-Assisted User Clustering in Cell-Free Massive MIMO-NOMA Networks

The superior spectral efficiency (SE) and user fairness feature of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems are achieved by exploiting user clustering (UC) more efficiently. However, a random UC certainly results in a suboptimal solution while an exhaustive search method comes at the cost of high complexity, especially for systems of medium-to-large size. To address this problem, we develop two efficient unsupervised machine learning (ML) based UC algorithms, namely k-means++ and improved k-means++, to effectively cluster users into disjoint clusters in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) system. Using full-pilot zero-forcing at access points, we derive the sum SE in closed-form expression taking into account the impact of intra-cluster pilot contamination, inter-cluster interference, and imperfect successive interference cancellation. To comprehensively assess the system performance, we formulate the sum SE optimization problem, and then develop a simple yet efficient iterative algorithm for its solution. In addition, the performance of collocated massive MIMO-NOMA (COmMIMO-NOMA) system is also characterized. Numerical results are provided to show the superior performance of the proposed UC algorithms compared to other baseline schemes. The effectiveness of applying NOMA in CFmMIMO and COmMIMO systems is also validated.

Low Complexity Neural Network Structures for Self-Interference Cancellation in Full-Duplex Radio

Self-interference (SI) is considered as a main challenge in full-duplex (FD) systems. Therefore, efficient SI cancelers are required for the influential deployment of FD systems in beyond fifth-generation wireless networks. Existing methods for SI cancellation have mostly considered the polynomial representation of the SI signal at the receiver. These methods are shown to operate well in practice while requiring high computational complexity. Alternatively, neural networks (NNs) are envisioned as promising candidates for modeling the SI signal with reduced computational complexity. Consequently, in this paper, two novel low complexity NN structures, referred to as the ladder-wise grid structure (LWGS) and moving-window grid structure (MWGS), are proposed. The core idea of these two structures is to mimic the non-linearity and memory effect introduced to the SI signal in order to achieve proper SI cancellation while exhibiting low computational complexity. The simulation results reveal that the LWGS and MWGS NN-based cancelers attain the same cancellation performance of the polynomial-based canceler while providing 49.87% and 34.19% complexity reduction, respectively.

Towards the Use of Re-configurable Intelligent Surfaces in VLC Systems: Beam Steering

The emergence of visible light communication (VLC) technology as a solution to solve radio frequency impediments, such as spectrum shortage, is continuously appealing. In addition to its large and unlicensed bandwidth, VLC provides a high level of security in a closed room with zero radio frequency interference. However, loss of the VLC signal is experienced when the receiver rotates or moves. This challenge requires a special solution for integration into portable devices. On the other hand, re-configurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a technology exploited in radio frequency to solve dead zones and loss of signal. RIS elements are characterized by tunable physico-chemical characteristics including physical depth and refractive index. In this paper, we exploit these RIS attributes to steer the incident light beam and offer the VLC receiver a large range of rotation angle while improving its signal detection capabilities. We show that instead of using convex, parabolic, or spherical lenses, adopting a meta-lens with artificial muscles or a thin-film crystal-liquid with embedded Titanium dioxide nano-disk, a VLC receiver can detect light rays at $90^o$ incidence angle with high precision and considerable improvement in the detected light intensity, even with a miniaturized single photodetector.

Robust Design for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted MIMO-OFDMA Terahertz Communications

Recently, terahertz (THz) communication has drawn considerable attention as one of the promising technologies for the future wireless communications owning to its ultra-wide bandwidth. Nonetheless, one major obstacle that prevents the actual deployment of THz lies in its inherent huge attenuation. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) represent two effective solutions for compensating the large pathloss in THz systems. In this paper, we consider an IRS-aided multi-user THz MIMO system with orthogonal frequency division multiple access, where the sparse radio frequency chain antenna structure is adopted for reducing the power consumption. The objective is to maximize the weighted sum rate via jointly optimizing the hybrid analog/digital beamforming at the base station and reflection matrix at the IRS. {Since the analog beamforming and reflection matrix need to cater all users and subcarriers, it is difficult to directly solve the formulated problem, and thus, an alternatively iterative optimization algorithm is proposed.} Specifically, the analog beamforming is designed by solving a MIMO capacity maximization problem, while the digital beamforming and reflection matrix optimization are both tackled using semidefinite relaxation technique. Considering that obtaining perfect channel state information (CSI) is a challenging task in IRS-based systems, we further explore the case with the imperfect CSI for the channels from the IRS to users. Under this setup, we propose a robust beamforming and reflection matrix design scheme for the originally formulated non-convex optimization problem. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks are envisaged to enable a plethora of breakthrough advancements in wireless technologies, providing support of a diverse set of services over a single platform. While the deployment of 5G systems is scaling up globally, it is time to look ahead for beyond 5G systems. This is driven by the emerging societal trends, calling for fully automated systems and intelligent services supported by extended reality and haptics communications. To accommodate the stringent requirements of their prospective applications, which are data-driven and defined by extremely low-latency, ultra-reliable, fast and seamless wireless connectivity, research initiatives are currently focusing on a progressive roadmap towards the sixth generation (6G) networks. In this article, we shed light on some of the major enabling technologies for 6G, which are expected to revolutionize the fundamental architectures of cellular networks and provide multiple homogeneous artificial intelligence-empowered services, including distributed communications, control, computing, sensing, and energy, from its core to its end nodes. Particularly, this paper aims to answer several 6G framework related questions: What are the driving forces for the development of 6G? How will the enabling technologies of 6G differ from those in 5G? What kind of applications and interactions will they support which would not be supported by 5G? We address these questions by presenting a profound study of the 6G vision and outlining five of its disruptive technologies, i.e., terahertz communications, programmable metasurfaces, drone-based communications, backscatter communications and tactile internet, as well as their potential applications. Then, by leveraging the state-of-the-art literature surveyed for each technology, we discuss their requirements, key challenges, and open research problems.

Deep Learning Optimized Sparse Antenna Activation for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Communication

To capture the communications gain of the massive radiating elements with low power cost, the conventional reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) usually works in passive mode. However, due to the cascaded channel structure and the lack of signal processing ability, it is difficult for RIS to obtain the individual channel state information and optimize the beamforming vector. In this paper, we add signal processing units for a few antennas at RIS to partially acquire the channels. To solve the crucial active antenna selection problem, we construct an active antenna selection network that utilizes the probabilistic sampling theory to select the optimal locations of these active antennas. With this active antenna selection network, we further design two deep learning (DL) based schemes, i.e., the channel extrapolation scheme and the beam searching scheme, to enable the RIS communication system. The former utilizes the selection network and a convolutional neural network to extrapolate the full channels from the partial channels received by the active RIS antennas, while the latter adopts a fully-connected neural network to achieve the direct mapping between the partial channels and the optimal beamforming vector with maximal transmission rate. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed DL-based schemes.

Deep Learning Based Antenna Selection for Channel Extrapolation in FDD Massive MIMO

In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the large number of antennas would bring a great challenge for the acquisition of the accurate channel state information, especially in the frequency division duplex mode. To overcome the bottleneck of the limited number of radio links in hybrid beamforming, we utilize the neural networks (NNs) to capture the inherent connection between the uplink and downlink channel data sets and extrapolate the downlink channels from a subset of the uplink channel state information. We study the antenna subset selection problem in order to achieve the best channel extrapolation and decrease the data size of NNs. The probabilistic sampling theory is utilized to approximate the discrete antenna selection as a continuous and differentiable function, which makes the back propagation of the deep learning feasible. Then, we design the proper off-line training strategy to optimize both the antenna selection pattern and the extrapolation NNs. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our proposed massive MIMO channel extrapolation algorithm.
