On the Complexity Reduction of Uplink Sparse Code Multiple Access for Spatial Modulation

Multi-user spatial modulation (SM) assisted by sparse code multiple access (SCMA) has been recently proposed to provide uplink high spectral efficiency transmission. The message passing algorithm (MPA) is employed to detect the transmitted signals, which suffers from high complexity. This paper proposes three low-complexity algorithms for the first time to the SM-SCMA. The first algorithm is referred to as successive user detection (SUD), while the second algorithm is the modified version of SUD, namely modified SUD (MSUD). Then, for the first time, the tree-search of the SM-SCMA is constructed. Based on that tree-search, another variant of the sphere decoder (SD) is proposed for the SM-SCMA, referred to as fixed-complexity SD (FCSD). SUD provides a benchmark for decoding complexity at the expense of bit-error-rate (BER) performance. Further, MSUD slightly increases the complexity of SUD with a significant improvement in BER performance. Finally, FCSD provides a near-optimum BER with a considerable reduction of the complexity compared to the MPA decoder and also supports parallel hardware implementation. The proposed algorithms provide flexible design choices for practical implementation based on system design demands. The complexity analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations of the BER are provided for the proposed algorithms.

Hardware Impaired Ambient Backscatter NOMA Systems: Reliability and Security

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and ambient backscatter communication have been envisioned as two promising technologies for the Internet-of-things due to their high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. Motivated by this fact, we consider an ambient backscatter NOMA system in the presence of a malicious eavesdropper. Under some realistic assumptions of residual hardware impairments (RHIs), channel estimation errors (CEEs) and imperfect successive interference cancellation (ipSIC), we investigate the physical layer security (PLS) of the ambient backscatter NOMA systems focusing on reliability and security. In order to further improve the security of the considered system, an artificial noise scheme is proposed where the radio frequency (RF) source acts as a jammer that transmits interference signal to the legitimate receivers and eavesdropper. On this basis, the analytical expressions for the outage probability (OP) and the intercept probability (IP) are derived. To gain more insights, the asymptotic analysis and diversity orders for the OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime are carried out, and the asymptotic behaviors of the IP in the high main-to-eavesdropper ratio (MER) region are explored as well. Numerical results show that: 1) RHIs, CEEs and ipSIC have negative effects on the OP but positive effects on the IP; 2) Compared with CEEs, RHIs have a more serious impact on the reliability and security of the considered system; 3) There exists a trade-off between reliability and security, and this trade-off can be optimized by reducing the power coefficient of the artificial noise or increasing the interfering factor of readers; 4) There are error floors for the OP due to the CEEs and the reflection coefficient; 5) As MER grows large, the security for Rnand Rf is improved, while the security for T is reduced.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access: Unifying NOMA and SDMA in MISO VLC Channels

The increased proliferation of connected devices requires a paradigm shift towards the development of innovative technologies for the next generation of wireless systems. One of the key challenges, however, is the spectrum scarcity, owing to the unprecedented broadband penetration rate in recent years. Visible light communications (VLC) has recently emerged as a possible solution to enable high-speed short-range communications. However, VLC systems suffer from several limitations, including the limited modulation bandwidth of light-emitting diodes. Consequently, several multiple access techniques (MA), e.g., space-division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), have been considered for VLC networks. Despite their promising multiplexing gains, their performance is somewhat limited. In this article, we first provide an overview of the key MA technologies used in VLC systems. Then, we introduce rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), which was initially proposed for RF systems and discuss its potentials in VLC systems. Through system modeling and simulations of an RSMA-based two-use scenario, we illustrate the flexibility of RSMA in generalizing NOMA and SDMA, as well as its superiority in terms of weighted sum rate (WSR) in VLC. Finally, we discuss challenges, open issues, and research directions, which will enable the practical realization of RSMA in VLC.

Large Intelligent Surface Assisted Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access: Performance Analysis

Large intelligent surface (LIS) has recently emerged as a potential enabling technology for 6G networks, offering extended coverage and enhanced energy and spectral efficiency. In this work, motivated by its promising potentials, we investigate the error rate performance of LIS-assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. Specifically, we consider a downlink NOMA system, in which data transmission between a base station (BS) and $L$ NOMA users is assisted by an LIS comprising $M$ reflective elements. First, we derive the probability density function of the end-to-end wireless fading channels between the BS and NOMA users. Then, by leveraging the obtained results, we derive an approximate expression for the pairwise error probability (PEP) of NOMA users under the assumption of imperfect successive interference cancellation. Furthermore, accurate expressions for the PEP for $M = 1$ and large $M$ values ($M > 10$) are presented in closed-form. To gain further insights into the system performance, an asymptotic expression for the PEP in high signal-to-noise ratio regime, the achievable diversity order, and a tight union bound on the bit error rate are provided. Finally, numerical and simulation results are presented to validate the derived mathematical results.

Battery Recharging Time Models for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Wireless Power Transfer Systems

In this paper, we develop an analytical framework for the statistical analysis of the battery recharging time (BRT) in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) aided wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. Specifically, we derive novel closed-form expressions for the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function, and moments of the BRT of the radio frequency energy harvesting wireless nodes. Moreover, closed-form expressions of the the PDF of the BRT is obtained for two special cases: i) when the RIS is equipped with one reflecting element (RE), ii) when the RIS consists of a large number of REs. Capitalizing on the derived expressions, we offer a comprehensive treatment for the statistical characterization of the BRT and study the impact of the system and battery parameters on its performance. Our results reveal that the proposed statistical models are analytically tractable, accurate, and efficient in assessing the sustainability of RIS-assisted WPT networks and in providing key design insights for large-scale future wireless applications. For example, we demonstrate that a 4-fold reduction in the mean time of the BRT can be achieved by doubling the number of RIS elements. Monte Carlo simulation results corroborate the accuracy of the proposed theoretical framework.

A Novel Heap-based Pilot Assignment for Full Duplex Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Zero-Forcing

This paper investigates the combined benefits of full-duplex (FD) and cell-free massive multiple-input multipleoutput (CF-mMIMO), where a large number of distributed access points (APs) having FD capability simultaneously serve numerous uplink and downlink user equipments (UEs) on the same time-frequency resources. To enable the incorporation of FD technology in CF-mMIMO systems, we propose a novel heapbased pilot assignment algorithm, which not only can mitigate the effects of pilot contamination but also reduce the involved computational complexity. Then, we formulate a robust design problem for spectral efficiency (SE) maximization in which the power control and AP-UE association are jointly optimized, resulting in a difficult mixed-integer nonconvex programming. To solve this problem, we derive a more tractable problem before developing a very simple iterative algorithm based on inner approximation method with polynomial computational complexity. Numerical results show that our proposed methods with realistic parameters significantly outperform the existing approaches in terms of the quality of channel estimate and SE.

Spectral-Energy Efficiency Trade-off-based Beamforming Design for MISO Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems

Energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE) are two of the key performance metrics in future wireless networks, covering both design and operational requirements. For previous conventional resource allocation techniques, these two performance metrics have been considered in isolation, resulting in severe performance degradation in either of these metrics. Motivated by this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel beamforming design that jointly considers the trade-off between the two performance metrics in a multiple-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access system. In particular, we formulate a joint SE-EE based design as a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem to achieve a good tradeoff between the two performance metrics. However, this MOO problem is not mathematically tractable and, thus, it is difficult to determine a feasible solution due to the conflicting objectives, where both need to be simultaneously optimized. To overcome this issue, we exploit a priori articulation scheme combined with the weighted sum approach. Using this, we reformulate the original MOO problem as a conventional single objective optimization (SOO) problem. In doing so, we develop an iterative algorithm to solve this non-convex SOO problem using the sequential convex approximation technique. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the advantages and effectiveness of the proposed approach over the available beamforming designs.

Reliable Detection for Spatial Modulation Systems

Spatial modulation (SM) is a promising multiple-input multiple-output system used to increase spectral efficiency. The maximum likelihood (ML) decoder jointly detects the transmitted SM symbol, which is of high complexity. In this paper, a novel reliable sphere decoder (RSD) algorithm based on tree-search is proposed for the SM system. The basic idea of the proposed RSD algorithm is to reduce the size of the tree-search, and then, a smart searching method inside the reduced tree-search is performed to find the solution. The proposed RSD algorithm provides a significant reduction in decoding complexity compared to the ML decoder and existent decoders as well. Moreover, the RSD algorithm provides a flexible trade-off between the bit error rate (BER) performance and decoding complexity, so as to be reliable for a wide range of practical hardware implementations. The BER performance and decoding complexity analysis for the RSD algorithm are studied, and Monte Carlo simulations are then provided to demonstrate the findings.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enhanced Millimeter-Wave NOMA Systems

In this paper, a downlink intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enhanced millimeter-wave (mmWave) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system is considered. A joint optimization problem over active beamforming, passive beamforming and power allocation is formulated. Due to the highly coupled variables, the formulated optimization problem is non-convex. To solve this problem, an alternative optimization and successive convex approximation based iterative algorithm is proposed. Numerical results illustrate that: 1) the proposed scheme offers significant sum-rate gains, which confirms the effectiveness of introducing IRS for mmWave-NOMA systems; 2) the proposed algorithm with discrete phase shifts can achieve close performance to that of continuous phase shifts.

Graph Neural Network based Channel Tracking for Massive MIMO Networks

In this paper, we resort to the graph neural network (GNN) and propose the new channel tracking method for the massive multiple-input multiple-output networks under the high mobility scenario. We first utilize a small number of pilots to achieve the initial channel estimation. Then, we represent the obtained channel data in the form of graphs and describe the channel spatial correlation by the weights along the edges of the graph. Furthermore, we introduce the computation steps of the main unit for the GNN and design a GNN-based channel tracking framework, which includes an encoder, a core network and a decoder. Simulation results corroborate that our proposed GNN-based scheme can achieve better performance than the works with feedforward neural network.

A New Path Division Multiple Access for the Massive MIMO-OTFS Networks

This paper focuses on a new path division multiple access (PDMA) for both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) massive multiple-input multiple-output network over a high mobility scenario, where the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is adopted. First, the 3D UL channel model and the received signal model in the angle-delay-Doppler domain are studied. Secondly, the 3D-Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is utilized for the extraction of the UL channel parameters, including channel gains, directions of arrival, delays, and Doppler frequencies, over the antenna-time-frequency domain. Thirdly, we carefully analyze energy dispersion and power leakage of the 3D angle-delay-Doppler channels. Then, along UL, we design a path scheduling algorithm to properly assign angle-domain resources at user sides and to assure that the observation regions for different users do not overlap over the 3D cubic area, i.e., angle-delay-Doppler domain. After scheduling, different users can map their respective data to the scheduled delay-Doppler domain grids, and simultaneously send the data to base station (BS) without inter-user interference in the same OTFS block. Correspondingly, the signals at desired grids within the 3D resource space of BS are separately collected to implement the 3D channel estimation and maximal ratio combining-based data detection over the angle-delay-Doppler domain. Then, we construct a low complexity beamforming scheme over the angle-delay-Domain domain to achieve inter-user interference free DL communication. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity of our proposed unified UL/DL PDMA scheme.

Optimization of Rate Fairness in Multi-Pair Wireless-Powered Relaying Systems

This letter considers a multi-pair decode-and-forward relay network where a power-splitting (PS) protocol is adopted at the energy-constrained relay to provide simultaneous wireless information and energy harvesting (EH). To achieve higher efficiency of EH, we propose a new PS-based EH architecture at the relay by incorporating an alternating current (AC) computing logic, which is employed to directly use the wirelessly harvested AC energy for computational blocks. Under a nonlinear EH circuit, our goal is to maximize the fairness of end-to-end rate among user pairs subject to power constraints, resulting in a nonconvex problem. We propose an iterative algorithm to achieve a suboptimal and efficient solution to this challenging problem by leveraging the inner approximation framework. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the traditional direct current computing and other baseline schemes.

Optical Rate-Splitting Multiple Access for Visible Light Communications

The proliferation of connected devices and emergence of internet-of-everything represent a major challenge for broadband wireless networks. This requires a paradigm shift towards the development of innovative technologies for next generation wireless systems. One of the key challenges is the scarcity of spectrum, owing to the unprecedented broadband penetration rate in recent years. A promising solution is the proposal of visible light communications (VLC), which explores the unregulated visible light spectrum to enable high-speed communications, in addition to efficient lighting. This solution offers a wider bandwidth that can accommodate ubiquitous broadband connectivity to indoor users and offload data traffic from cellular networks. Although VLC is secure and able to overcome the shortcomings of RF systems, it suffers from several limitations, e.g., limited modulation bandwidth. In this respect, solutions have been proposed recently to overcome this limitation. In particular, most common orthogonal and non-orthogonal multiple access techniques initially proposed for RF systems, e.g., space-division multiple access (SDMA) and NOMA, have been considered in the context of VLC. In spite of their promising gains, the performance of these techniques is somewhat limited. Consequently, in this article a new and generalized multiple access technique, called rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), is introduced and investigated for the first time in VLC networks. We first provide an overview of the key multiple access technologies used in VLC systems. Then, we propose the first comprehensive approach to the integration of RSMA with VLC systems. In our proposed framework, SINR expressions are derived and used to evaluate the weighted sum rate (WSR) of a two-user scenario. Our results illustrate the flexibility of RSMA in generalizing NOMA and SDMA, and its WSR superiority in the VLC context.

Resource Allocation Technique for Hybrid TDMA-NOMA System with Opportunistic Time Assignment

In this paper, we develop a resource allocation technique for a hybrid time division multiple access (TDMA) - non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system with opportunistic time assignment. In particular, the available transmission time is divided into several time-slots, through which multiple users are served by exploiting power-domain NOMA. To fully exploit underlying benefits of this hybrid TDMA-NOMA system, we utilize the available resources efficiently by jointly allocating transmit power and time-slots to several groups of users in the system. Furthermore, these resources are allocated to maximize minimum rate of the users in the system. However, this max-min resource allocation problem is non-convex due to coupled design parameters of time and power allocations. Hence, we exploit a novel second-order cone formulation to overcome this non-convexity issue and develop an iterative algorithm to realize a solution to the original max-min problem. Simulation results show that this joint resource allocation technique has a considerable performance enhancement in terms of both minimum achieved rate and overall system throughput compared to that of the conventional resource allocation technique where equal time-slots are assigned to the groups of users.

On the Effective Capacity of an Underwater Acoustic Channel under Impersonation Attack

This paper investigates the impact of authentication on effective capacity (EC) of an underwater acoustic (UWA) channel. Specifically, the UWA channel is under impersonation attack by a malicious node (Eve) present in the close vicinity of the legitimate node pair (Alice and Bob); Eve tries to inject its malicious data into the system by making Bob believe that she is indeed Alice. To thwart the impersonation attack by Eve, Bob utilizes the distance of the transmit node as the feature/fingerprint to carry out feature-based authentication at the physical layer. Due to authentication at Bob, due to lack of channel knowledge at the transmit node (Alice or Eve), and due to the threshold-based decoding error model, the relevant dynamics of the considered system could be modelled by a Markov chain (MC). Thus, we compute the state-transition probabilities of the MC, and the moment generating function for the service process corresponding to each state. This enables us to derive a closed-form expression of the EC in terms of authentication parameters. Furthermore, we compute the optimal transmission rate (at Alice) through gradient-descent (GD) technique and artificial neural network (ANN) method. Simulation results show that the EC decreases under severe authentication constraints (i.e., more false alarms and more transmissions by Eve). Simulation results also reveal that the (optimal transmission rate) performance of the ANN technique is quite close to that of the GD method.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Wireless Caching for 5G-Enabled Vehicular Networks

The proliferation of connected vehicles along with the high demand for rich multimedia services constitute key challenges for the emerging 5G-enabled vehicular networks. These challenges include, but are not limited to, high spectral efficiency and low latency requirements. Recently, the integration of cache-enabled networks with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been shown to reduce the content delivery time and traffic congestion in wireless networks. Ac-cordingly, in this article, we envisage cache-aided NOMA as a technology facilitator for 5G-enabled vehicular networks. In particular, we present a cache-aided NOMA architecture, which can address some of the aforementioned challenges in these networks. We demonstrate that the spectral efficiency gain of the proposed architecture, which depends largely on the cached contents, significantly outperforms that of conventional vehicular networks. Finally, we provide deep insights into the challenges, opportunities, and future research trends that will enable the practical realization of cache-aided NOMA in 5G-enabled vehicular networks.

On the Spectral and Energy Efficiencies of Full-Duplex Cell-Free Massive MIMO

In-band full-duplex (FD) operation is practically more suited for short-range communications such as WiFi and small-cell networks, due to its current practical limitations on the self-interference cancellation. In addition, cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) is a new and scalable version of MIMO networks, which is designed to bring service antennas closer to end user equipments (UEs). To achieve higher spectral and energy efficiencies (SE-EE) of a wireless network, it is of practical interest to incorporate FD capability into CF-mMIMO systems to utilize their combined benefits. We formulate a novel and comprehensive optimization problem for the maximization of SE and EE in which power control, access point-UE (AP-UE) association and AP selection are jointly optimized under a realistic power consumption model, resulting in a difficult class of mixed-integer nonconvex programming. To tackle the binary nature of the formulated problem, we propose an efficient approach by exploiting a strong coupling between binary and continuous variables, leading to a more tractable problem. In this regard, two low-complexity transmission designs based on zero-forcing (ZF) are proposed. Combining tools from inner approximation framework and Dinkelbach method, we develop simple iterative algorithms with polynomial computational complexity in each iteration and strong theoretical performance guaranteed. Furthermore, towards a robust design for FD CF-mMIMO, a novel heap-based pilot assignment algorithm is proposed to mitigate effects of pilot contamination. Numerical results show that our proposed designs with realistic parameters significantly outperform the well-known approaches (i.e., small-cell and collocated mMIMO) in terms of the SE and EE. Notably, the proposed ZF designs require much less execution time than the simple maximum ratio transmission/combining.
