The coupling flow for supergravity

Quantum correlation functions in supersymmetric field theories can be encoded in the Nicolai map. The infinitesimal inverse map provides their response to a change in a coupling constant through a ``flow equation''. We investigate the flow in the gravitational constant $\kappa$ for four-dimensional Poincar\'e supergravity via its superconformal formulation. By expressing the full superconformal off-shell action as a supervariation we derive a ``flow operator'' in the effective vierbein theory, whose exponentiation yields the gauge-invariant part of an all-order (inverse) Nicolai map for supergravity. Alas, the BRST gauge fixing adds to this functional differential flow operator a multiplicative term, which ruins its derivational property and therefore jeopardizes its connection with the Nicolai map. We argue and present an example, however, that such multiplicative flow contributions might be rewritable as derivational ones with the help of Wick's theorem in the free effective theory where the Nicolai-transformed correlators are ultimately evaluated. At least in the Landau gauge, the supergravity flow equation is shown to be regular at $\kappa{=}0$, allowing for a perturbative expansion around Minkowski geometry. Therewith, we have overcome two of the three obstacles met in an earlier attempt towards a Nicolai map for Poincar\'e supergravity. Finally, we compare with the direct on-shell construction of a Nicolai map to leading order in $\kappa$.

The soliton nature of the super-Klein tunneling effect

We establish a relationship between the Davey--Stewartson II (DS II) integrable system in $(2{+}1)$ dimensions and quasi-exactly solvable planar interacting Dirac Hamiltonians that exhibit the super-Klein tunneling (SKT) effect. The Dirac interactions are constructed from the real and imaginary parts of breather solutions of the DS II system. In this framework, the SKT effect arises when the energy is tuned to match the constant background of the soliton, while the resulting Dirac Hamiltonians simultaneously support bound states embedded in the continuum. By imposing the SKT boundary conditions, we employ Darboux transformations to construct a general three-parameter family of DS II breather solutions that can be mapped to Dirac Hamiltonians. At the initial soliton time, the corresponding Dirac systems form a massless two-parameter family of Hermitian models with nontrivial electrostatic potentials. As the soliton time evolves, the systems become $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and develop a nontrivial imaginary mass term. Finally, when the soliton time is taken to be imaginary, the construction yields Hermitian Dirac systems that lack time-reversal symmetry. In all cases, we identify the emergence of quasi-symmetry transformations that preserve the SKT subspace of states while not commuting with the full Hamiltonian.

Towards a Nicolai map for supergravity

We investigate the possibility of a Nicolai map for minimal supergravity in four dimensions. Such a map would allow for the computation of quantum supergravity correlation functions in terms of flat-space correlators in an effective nonlocal bosonic theory with the help of a nonlinear field transformation, the inverse Nicolai map. Such a map is guaranteed for off-shell global supersymmetry, but local supersymmetry presents at least three obstacles for the construction. Their effects are analyzed in detail, in an attempt to set up a Nicolai map to leading order in the gravitational coupling. We find indications that the conformal factor of the metric obstructs the off-shell construction, suggesting that the unimodular variant of supergravity may do better. The on-shell supersymmetry approach, successful for super-Yang-Mills theory in its critical dimensions, also fails, because the graviton self-interaction cannot be written as a supervariation. Nevertheless, by brute force we obtain a four-parameter first-order Nicolai map fulfilling the free-action condition. For the acid test of determinant matching, however, one needs to push the general ansatz and the perturbative expansion to the second order and to the quantum level.

Coupling and particle number intertwiners in the Calogero model

It is long known that quantum Calogero models feature intertwining operators, which increase or decrease the coupling constant by an integer amount, for any fixed number of particles. We name these as ``horizontal'' and construct new ``vertical'' intertwiners, which \emph{change the number of interacting particles} for a fixed but integer value of the coupling constant. The emerging structure of a grid of intertwiners exists only in the algebraically integrable situation (integer coupling) and allows one to obtain each Liouville charge from the free power sum in the particle momenta by iterated intertwining either horizontally or vertically. We present recursion formul\ae\ for the intertwiners as a factorization problem for partial differential operators and prove their existence for small values of particle number and coupling. As a byproduct, a new basis of non-symmetric Liouville integrals appears, algebraically related to the standard symmetric one.

Nicolai maps for supersymmetric sigma models

Supersymmetric field theories can be characterized by their Nicolai map, which is a nonlinear and nonlocal field transformation to their free-field limit. The systematic construction of such maps has recently been outlined for actions with power more than two in the fermions, which produces a perturbative expansion in loop-decorated fermionic tree diagrams. We thoroughly investigate the nonlinear $\mathbb C P^1$ sigma model in ($3{+}1$)-dimensional Minkowski space as a paradigmatical example. We construct and test a chiral form of the Nicolai map, to third order in the coupling, including all (regularized) quantum parts. In addition, all trees with one or two edges are summed up. The free-action condition determines only the one-edge part of the map. We resolve the fermion loop decoration of the Nicolai trees by injecting an auxiliary vector field and present the ensuing classical Nicolai map to second order in a dimensionful coupling.

Nicolai maps for super Yang-Mills on the light cone

We construct Nicolai maps for supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four and ten spacetime dimensions in the light-cone gauge, where the elimination of non-propagating degrees of freedom causes nonlocal and four-fermi interactions in the Lagrangian. The presence of the latter used to be an obstruction to the Nicolai map, which has recently been overcome at the price of quantum corrections to the map. No gauge-fixing or ghost terms arise in this formulation, since only physical transverse degrees of freedom occur. We present an explicit form of the Nicolai map to second order in the gauge coupling. In four dimensions, a `chiral' choice of the map leaves one of the two transverse gauge-field modes invariant, which forces the classical part of the map (on the other mode) to become a polynomial (quadratic in the gauge coupling, cubic in the gauge field)! In the power series expansion for the ten-dimensional map however, cancellations at each order in the coupling are systematic but incomplete, still leaving an infinite power series for the Nicolai map (on all eight transverse modes). Nevertheless, the existence of a polynomial variant is conceivable, also for the maximal ${\cal N}{=}\,4$ theory in four dimensions.

Nicolai maps with four-fermion interactions

Nicolai maps offer an alternative description of supersymmetric theories via nonlinear and nonlocal transformations characterized by the so-called `free-action' and `determinant-matching' conditions. The latter expresses the equality of the Jacobian determinant of the transformation with the one obtained by integrating out the fermions, which so far have been considered only to quadratic terms. We argue that such a restriction is not substantial, as Nicolai maps can be constructed for arbitrary nonlinear sigma models, which feature four-fermion interactions. The fermionic effective one-loop action then gets generalized to higher loops and the perturbative tree expansion of such Nicolai maps receives quantum corrections in the form of fermion loop decorations. The `free-action condition' continues to hold for the classical map, but the `determinant-matching condition' is extended to an infinite hierarchy in fermion loop order. After general considerations for sigma models in four dimensions, we specialize to the case of $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^N$ symmetric spaces and construct the associated Nicolai map. These sigma models admit a formulation with only quadratic fermions via an auxiliary vector field, which does not simplify our analysis.

The Nicolai-map approach to supersymmetry

In 1980 Hermann Nicolai proposed a characterization of supersymmetric theories that became known as the Nicolai map. This is a particular nonlocal and nonlinear field transformation, whose perturbative expansion is given by fermion-line trees with bosonic leaves. Quantum correlation functions can by evaluated using the inversely transformed fields in the free theory. After initial promise and excitement (fuelling the author's PhD work!), the subject all but fell dormant for 35 years. Recently however, technical progress in the construction as well as a deeper insight into the nature of the map have been achieved, from quantum mechanics to super Yang-Mills in various dimensions. I will present the Nicolai map from this modern perspective and touch on some of the current developments.

Quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics and a new class of user-friendly matrix Hamiltonians

In the conventional Schr\"{o}dinger's formulation of quantum mechanics the unitary evolution of a state $\psi$ is controlled, in Hilbert space ${\cal L}$, by a Hamiltonian $\mathfrak{h}$ which must be self-adjoint. In the recent, ``quasi-Hermitian'' reformulation of the theory one replaces $\mathfrak{h}$ by its isospectral but non-Hermitian avatar $H = \Omega^{-1}\mathfrak{h}\Omega$ with $\Omega^\dagger\Omega = \Theta \neq I$. Although acting in another, manifestly unphysical Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, the amended Hamiltonian $H \neq H^\dagger$ can be perceived as self-adjoint with respect to the amended inner-product metric $\Theta$. In our paper motivated by a generic technical ``user-unfriendliness'' of the non-Hermiticity of $H$ we introduce and describe a specific new family of Hamiltonians $H$ for which the metrics $\Theta$ become available in closed form.

A Casimir operator for a Calogero $W$ algebra

We investigate the nonlinear algebra $W_3$ generated by the 9 functionally independent permutation-symmetric operators in the three-particle rational quantum Calogero model. Decoupling the center of mass, we pass to a smaller algebra $W'_3$ generated by 7 operators, which fall into a spin-$1$ and a spin-$\frac32$ representation of the conformal $sl(2)$ subalgebra. The commutators of the spin-$\frac32$ generators with each other are quadratic in the spin-$1$ generators, with a central term depending on the Calogero coupling. One expects this algebra to feature three Casimir operators, and we construct the lowest one explicitly in terms of Weyl-ordered products of the 7 generators. It is a polynomial of degree 6 in these generators, with coefficients being up to quartic in $\hbar$ and quadratic polynomials in the Calogero coupling $\hbar^2g(g{-}1)$. Putting back the center of mass, our Casimir operator for $W_3$ is a degree-9 polynomial in the 9 generators. The computations require the evaluation of nested Weyl orderings. The classical and free-particle limits are also given. Our scheme can be extended to any finite number $N$ of Calogero particles and the corresponding nonlinear algebras $W_N$ and $W'_N$.

A perturbative expansion scheme for supermembrane and matrix theory

We reconsider the supermembrane in a Minkowski background and in the light-cone gauge as a one-dimensional gauge theory of area preserving diffeomorphisms (APDs). Keeping the membrane tension $T$ as an independent parameter we show that $T$ is proportional to the square of the gauge coupling $g$ of this gauge theory, such that the small (large) tension limit of the supermembrane corresponds to the weak (strong) coupling limit of the APD gauge theory and its SU$(N)$ matrix model approximation. A perturbative linearization of the supersymmetric theory suitable for a quantum mechanical path-integral treatment can be achieved by formulating a Nicolai map for the matrix model, which we work out explicitly to ${\cal O}(g^4)$. The corresponding formulae remain well-defined in the limit $N{\to}\infty$; this result relies on a cancellation of infinities not present for the bosonic membrane, indicating that the $N{\to}\infty$ limit does not exist for the purely bosonic matrix model. Furthermore we show that the map has improved convergence properties in comparison with the usual perturbative expansions because its Jacobian admits an expansion in $g$ with a non-zero radius of convergence. Possible implications for unsolved issues with the matrix model of M theory are also mentioned.

Trajectories of charged particles in knotted electromagnetic fields

We investigate the trajectories of point charges in the background of finite-action vacuum solutions of Maxwell's equations known as knot solutions. More specifically, we work with a basis of electromagnetic knots generated by the so-called "de Sitter method". We find a variety of behaviors depending on the field configuration and the parameter set used. This includes an acceleration of particles by the electromagnetic field from rest to ultrarelativistic speeds, a quick convergence of their trajectories into a few narrow cones asymptotically for sufficiently high value of the coupling, and a pronounced twisting and turning of trajectories in a coherent fashion. This work is part of an effort to improve the understanding of knotted electromagnetic fields and the trajectories of charged particles they generate, and may be relevant for experimental applications.

An improved Nicolai map for super Yang-Mills theory

Adding a topological theta term to the action of $\mathcal{N}{=}\,1$ $D{=}4$ super Yang-Mills theory modifies its Nicolai map. For the BPS value of the theta angle a chiral version of the map emerges, which allows for a considerable simplification compared to the non-chiral formulation. We exhibit these improvements to all orders in perturbation theory and compute the map to fourth order in the coupling on the Laudau-gauge hypersurface. The second-order contribution vanishes, and antisymmetrizations are more manifest. All checks are verified to third order.

Exact gauge fields from anti-de Sitter space

In 1977 L\"uscher found a class of SO(4)-symmetric SU(2) Yang-Mills solutions in Minkowski space, which have been rederived 40 years later by employing the isometry $S^3\cong\mathrm{SU}(2)$ and conformally mapping SU(2)-equivariant solutions of the Yang-Mills equations on (two copies of) de Sitter space $\mathrm{dS}_4\cong\mathbb{R}{\times}S^3$. Here we present the noncompact analog of this construction via $\mathrm{AdS}_3\cong\mathrm{SU}(1,1)$. On (two copies of) anti-de Sitter space $\mathrm{AdS}_4\cong\mathbb{R}{\times}\mathrm{AdS}_3$ we write down SU(1,1)-equivariant Yang-Mills solutions and conformally map them to $\mathbb{R}^{1,3}$. This yields a two-parameter family of exact SU(1,1) Yang-Mills solutions on Minkowski space, whose field strengths are essentially rational functions of Cartesian coordinates. Gluing the two AdS copies happens on a $\mathrm{dS}_3$ hyperboloid in Minkowski space, and our Yang-Mills configurations are singular on a two-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathrm{dS}_3\cap\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$. This renders their action and the energy infinite, although the field strengths fall off fast asymptotically except along the lightcone. We also construct Abelian solutions, which share these properties but are less symmetric and of zero action.

Supersymmetric large-order perturbation with the Nicolai map

In rigidly supersymmetric quantum theories, the Nicolai map allows one to turn on a coupling constant (from zero to a finite value) by keeping the (free) functional integration measure but subjecting the fields to a particular nonlocal and nonlinear transformation. A recursive perturbative construction of the Nicolai-transformed field configuration expresses it as a power series in the coupling, with its coefficient function at order $n$ being a sum of particular tree diagrams. For a quantum-mechanical example, the size of these tree diagrams (under a certain functional norm) is estimated by the $(n{+}1)$st power of the field size, and their number grows like $n^{-3/2}\times4.967^{\;n}$. Such an asymptotic behavior translates to a finite convergence radius for the formal perturbative expansion of the Nicolai map, which establishes its non-perturbative existence. The known factorial growth of the number of Feynman diagrams for quantum correlators is reproduced by the combinatorics of free-field Wick contractions as usual. We expect our results to extend to higher dimensions, including super Yang-Mills theory.

Is the Nicolai map unique?

The Nicolai map is a field transformation that relates supersymmetric theories at finite couplings $g$ with the free theory at $g=0$. It is obtained via an ordered exponential of the coupling flow operator integrated from $0$ to $g$. Allowing multiple couplings, we find that the map in general depends on the chosen integration contour in coupling space. This induces a large functional freedom in the construction of the Nicolai map, which cancels in all correlator computations. Under a certain condition on the coupling flow operator the ambiguity disappears, and the power-series expansion for the map collapses to a linear function in the coupling. A special role is played by topological (theta) couplings, which do not affect perturbative correlation functions but also alter the Nicolai map. We demonstate that for certain 'magical' theta values the uniqueness condition holds, providing an exact map polynomial in the fields and independent of the integration contour. This feature is related to critical points of the Nicolai map and the existence of 'instantons'. As a toy model, we work with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum mechanics. For a cubic superpotential and a theta term, we explicitly compute the one-, two- and three-point correlation function to one-loop order employing a graphical representation of the (inverse) Nicolai map in terms of tree diagrams, confirming the cancellation of theta dependence. Comparison of Nicolai and conventional Feynman perturbation theory nontrivially yields complete agreement, but only after adding all (1PI and 1PR) contributions.

Yang-Mills solutions on Minkowski space via non-compact coset spaces

We find a two-parameter family of solutions of the Yang-Mills equations for gauge group SO(1,3) on Minkowski space by foliating different parts of it with non-compact coset spaces with SO(1,3) isometry. The interior of the lightcone is foliated with hyperbolic space $H^3\cong \text{SO}(1,3)/\text{SO}(3)$, while the exterior of the lightcone employs de Sitter space dS$_3\cong \text{SO}(1,3)/\text{SO}(1,2)$. The lightcone itself is parametrized by SO(1,3)/ISO(2) in a nilpotent fashion. Equivariant reduction of the SO(1,3) Yang-Mills system on the first two coset spaces yields a mechanical system with inverted double-well potential and the foliation parameter serving as an evolution parameter. Its known analytic solutions are periodic or runaway except for the kink. On the lightcone, only the vacuum solution remains. The constructed Yang-Mills field strength is singular across the lightcone and of infinite action due to the noncompact cosets. Its energy-momentum tensor takes a very simple form, with energy density of opposite signs inside and outside the lightcone.

Integrability of supersymmetric Calogero-Moser models

We analyze the integrability of the ${\cal N}$-extended supersymmetric Calogero-Moser model. We explicitly construct the Lax pair $\{L,A\}$ for this system, which properly reproduces all equations of motion. After adding a supersymmetric oscillator potential we reduce the latter to solving $\dot{U}\,{=}\,A\,U$ for the time evolution operator $U(t)$. The bosonic variables, however, evolve independently of $U$ on closed trajectories, as is required for superintegrability. To visualize the structure of the conserved currents we derive the complete set of Liouville charges up to the fifth power in the momenta, for the ${\cal N}{=}\,2$ supersymmetric model. The additional, non-involutive, conserved charges needed for a maximal superintegrability of this model are also found.
