How to construct all metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds

We show that any compact metric $f$-$K$-contact, respectively $S$-manifold is obtained from a compact $K$-contact, respectively Sasakian manifold by an iteration of constructions of mapping tori, rotations, and type II deformations.

On the signature of biquotients

We generalize Hirzebruch's computation of the signature of equal rank homogeneous spaces to a large class of biquotients.

GKM theory and Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions in dimension $6$

Using the classification of $6$-dimensional manifolds by Wall, Jupp and Žubr, we observe that the diffeomorphism type of simply-connected, compact $6$-dimensional integer GKM $T^2$-manifolds is encoded in their GKM graph. As an application, we show that the $6$-dimensional manifolds on which Tolman and Woodward constructed Hamiltonian, non-Kähler $T^2$-actions with finite fixed point set are both diffeomorphic to Eschenburg's twisted flag manifold $SU(3)//T^2$. In particular, they admit a noninvariant Kähler structure.

Realization of GKM fibrations and new examples of Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions

We classify fibrations of abstract $3$-regular GKM graphs over $2$-regular ones, and show that all fiberwise signed fibrations of this type are realized as the projectivization of equivariant complex rank $2$ vector bundles over quasitoric $4$-folds or $S^4$. We investigate the existence of invariant (stable) almost complex, symplectic, and Kähler structures on the total space. In this way we obtain infinitely many Kähler manifolds with Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions in dimension $6$ with prescribed one-skeleton, in particular with prescribed number of isolated fixed points.

On the topology of metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds

We observe that the class of metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds, which naturally contains that of $K$-contact manifolds, is closed under forming mapping tori of automorphisms of the structure. We show that the de Rham cohomology of compact metric $f$-$K$-contact manifolds naturally splits off an exterior algebra, and relate the closed leaves of the characteristic foliation to its basic cohomology.

Symplectic and Kähler structures on biquotients

We construct symplectic structures on roughly half of all equal rank biquotients of the form $G//T$, where $G$ is a compact simple Lie group and $T$ a torus, and investigate Hamiltonian Lie group actions on them. For the Eschenburg flag, this action has similar properties as Tolman's and Woodward's examples of Hamiltonian non-Kähler actions. In addition to the previously known Kähler structure on the Eschenburg flag, we find another Kähler structure on a biquotient $\mathrm{SU}(4)//T^3$.

Equivariant de Rham Cohomology: Theory and Applications

This is a survey on the equivariant cohomology of Lie group actions on manifolds, from the point of view of de Rham theory. Emphasis is put on the notion of equivariant formality, as well as on applications to ordinary cohomology and to fixed points.

Projective loops generate rational loop groups

Rational loops played a central role in Uhlenbeck's construction of harmonic maps into U(n) (chiral model in physics), and they are generated by simple elements with one pole and one zero constructed from Hermitian projections. It has been believed for long time that nilpotent loops should be added to generate rational loop groups with noncompact reality conditions. We prove a somewhat unexpected theorem that projective loops are enough to generate the rational loop groups of GL(n,C), GL(n,R), and U(p, q).

Locally conformally symplectic convexity

We investigate special lcs and twisted Hamiltonian torus actions on strict lcs manifolds and characterize them geometrically in terms of the minimal presentation. We prove a convexity theorem for the corresponding twisted moment map, establishing thus an analog of the symplectic convexity theorem of Atiyah and Guillemin-Sternberg. We also prove similar results for the symplectic moment map (defined on the minimal presentation) whose image is then a convex cone. In the special case of a compact toric Vaisman manifold, we obtain a structure theorem.

Generating rational loop groups with noncompact reality conditions

We find generators for the full rational loop group of GL(n,C) as well as for the subgroup consisting of loops that satisfy the reality condition with respect to the noncompact real form GL(n,R). We calculate the dressing action of some of those generators on the positive loop group, and apply this to the ZS-AKNS flows and the n-dimensional system associated to GL(n,R)/O(n).

Assignments for topological group actions

A polynomial assignment for a continuous action of a compact torus $T$ on a topological space $X$ assigns to each $p\in X$ a polynomial function on the Lie algebra of the isotropy group at $p$ in such a way that a certain compatibility condition is satisfied. The space ${\mathcal{A}}_T(X)$ of all polynomial assignments has a natural structure of an algebra over the polynomial ring of ${\rm Lie}(T)$. It is an equivariant homotopy invariant, canonically related to the equivariant cohomology algebra. In this paper we prove various properties of ${\mathcal{A}}_T(X)$ such as Borel localization, a Chang-Skjelbred lemma, and a Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson presentation. In the special case of Hamiltonian torus actions on symplectic manifolds we prove a surjectivity criterion for the assignment equivariant Kirwan map corresponding to a circle in $T$. We then obtain a Tolman-Weitsman type presentation of the kernel of this map.

On the history of the Hopf problem

This short note serves as a historical introduction to the Hopf problem: "Does there exist a complex structure on $S^6$?" This unsolved mathematical question was the subject of the Conference "MAM 1 $-$ (Non-)Existence of Complex Structures on $S^6$", which took place at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany, between March 27th and March 30th, 2017.

Equivariant cohomology of cohomogeneity one actions: the topological case

We show that for any cohomogeneity one continuous action of a compact connected Lie group $G$ on a closed topological manifold the equivariant cohomology equipped with its canonical $H^*(BG)$-module structure is Cohen-Macaulay. The proof relies on the structure theorem for these actions recently obtained by Galaz-Garcia and Zarei. We generalize in this way our previous result concerning smooth actions.

Localization of Chern-Simons type invariants of Riemannian foliations

We prove an Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne type localization formula for Killing foliations in the context of equivariant basic cohomology. As an application, we localize some Chern-Simons type invariants, for example the volume of Sasakian manifolds and secondary characteristic classes of Riemannian foliations, to the union of closed leaves. Various examples are given to illustrate our method.
