On the cost of reaching an attainable state for the boundary-controlled 1-D heat equation

We consider the heat equation in an interval of the real line, with null initial condition, and Dirichlet boundary controls. We study the cost of reaching an attainable state at some time $T>0$. Precisely, given a state in the interval that we know is reachable by suitable boundary controls, we estimate the size of the smallest controls that reach it, in terms of an appropriate norm of this state. Our estimate is optimal in some sense as the time horizon goes to $0$.

Motion of a massive rigid loop in a 3D perfect incompressible flow

We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in an inviscid incompressible fluid. In 2D, an important physical effect associated with this system is the famous Kutta-Joukowski effect. In the present paper, we identify a similar effect in the 3D case. For this, we first recast the Newtonian dynamics of the rigid body as a first-order nonlinear ODE for the $6$-component body velocity, in the body frame. Then, we focus on the particular case where the rigid body occupies a slender tubular domain with a smooth closed curve as the centerline and a circular cross-section, in the limit where the radius goes to zero, with fixed inertia and circulation around the curve. We establish that the dynamics of the limit massive rigid loop are given by a first-order nonlinear ODE with coefficients that depend only on the inertia, on the fluid vorticity, and on the limit curve through two $3$D vectors, which are involved in a skewsymmetric $6 \times 6$ matrix that appears in the limit force and torque, a structure which is reminiscent of the 2D Kutta-Joukowski effect. We also identify the limit fluid dynamics as, where, as in the case of the Euler equation alone, the vorticity evolves according to the usual transport equation with stretching, but with a velocity field that is due not only to the fluid vorticity but also to a vorticity filament associated with the circulation around the limit rigid loop. This result is in stark contrast with the case where the filament is made of fluid, with non-zero circulation, since in the latter, the filament velocity becomes infinite in the zero-radius limit. However, considering the inertia scaling that corresponds to a fixed density, we prove that there are solutions for which the solid velocity and its displacement tend to infinity over a time interval of size $\mathcal{O}(1)$.

2 x 2 hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in classes of functions of bounded p-variation

In this paper, we consider $2 \times 2$ hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension with characteristic fields satisfying a condition that encompasses genuine nonlinearity and linear degeneracy as well as intermediate cases, namely, with standard notations, $r_i\cdot \nabla λ_i \geq 0$. We prove the existence of entropy solutions in the fractional $BV$ spaces ${W}_p(\mathbb{R})$ of functions of bounded $p$-variation, $p \in [1,\frac{3}{2}]$, for small initial data.

Exact controllability of the vortex system by means of a single vortex

In this paper, we investigate the controllability of the point vortex system by means of a single vortex. The point vortex system is a well-known simplied model for the incompressible Euler equation, where the vorticity is concentrated in a nite number of Dirac masses. We use one of the vortices as a control, and prove that by suitably choosing its trajectory, we can drive all other vortices to a given prescribed position in arbitrary time.

Remote trajectory tracking of rigid bodies immersed in a 2D perfect incompressible fluid

We consider the motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a two-dimensional incompressible perfect fluid. The motion of the rigid bodies is given by the Newton laws with forces due to the fluid pressure and the fluid motion is described by the incompressible Euler equations. Our analysis covers the case where the circulations of the fluid velocity around the bodies are nonzero and where the fluid vorticity is bounded. The whole system occupies a bounded simply connected domain with an external fixed boundary which is impermeable except on an open non-empty part where one allows some fluid to go in and out the domain by controlling the normal velocity and the entering vorticity. We prove that it is possible to exactly achieve any non-colliding smooth motion of the rigid bodies by the remote action of a controlled normal velocity on the outer boundary which takes the form of state-feedback, with zero entering vorticity. This extends the result of (Glass, O., Kolumb{á}n, J. J., Sueur, F. (2017). External boundary control of the motion of a rigid body immersed in a perfect two-dimensional fluid. Analysis \& PDE) where the exact controllability of a single rigid body immersed in a 2D irrotational perfect incompressible fluid from an initial position and velocity to a final position and velocity was investigated. The proof relies on a nonlinear method to solve linear perturbations of nonlinear equations associated with a quadratic operator having a regular non-trivial zero. Here this method is applied to a quadratic equation satisfied by a class of boundary controls, which is obtained by extending the reformulation of the Newton equations performed in the uncontrolled case in (Glass, O., Lacave, C., Munnier, A., Sueur, F. (2019). Dynamics of rigid bodies in a two dimensional incompressible perfect fluid. Journal of Differential Equations, 267(6), 3561-3577) to the case where a control acts on the external boundary.

Dynamics of several rigid bodies in a two-dimensional ideal fluid and convergence to vortex systems

We consider the motion of several solids in a bounded cavity filled with a perfect incompressible fluid, in two dimensions. The solids move according to Newton's law, under the influence of the fluid's pressure, and the fluid dynamics is driven by the 2D incompressible Euler equations, which are set on the time-dependent domain corresponding to the cavity deprived of the sets occupied by the solids. We assume that the fluid vorticity is initially bounded and that the circulations around the solids may be non-zero. The existence of a unique corresponding solution, à la Yudovich, to this system, up to a possible collision, is known. In this paper we identify the limit dynamics of the system when the radius of some of the solids converge to zero depending on how, for each body, the inertia is scaled with the radius. We obtain in the limit some point vortex systems for the solids converging to particles and a form of Newton's law for the solids that have a fixed radius; for the fluid we obtain an Euler-type system. This extends earlier works to the case of several moving rigid bodies. A crucial point is to understand the interaction, through the fluid, between small moving solids, and for that we use some normal forms of the ODEs driving the motion of the solids in two steps: first we use a normal form for the system coupling the time-evolution of all the solids to obtain a rough estimate of the acceleration of the bodies, then we turn to some normal forms that are specific to each small solid, with an appropriate modulation related to the influence of the other solids and of the fluid vorticity, to obtain some precise uniform a priori estimates of the velocities of the bodies, and then pass to the limit.

External boundary control of the motion of a rigid body immersed in a perfect two-dimensional fluid

We consider the motion of a rigid body due to the pressure of a surrounded two-dimensional irrotational perfect incompressible fluid, the whole system being confined in a bounded domain with an impermeable condition on a part of the external boundary. Thanks to an impulsive control strategy we prove that there exists an appropriate boundary condition on the remaining part of the external boundary (allowing some fluid going in and out the domain) such that the immersed rigid body is driven from some given initial position and velocity to some final position and velocity in a given positive time, without touching the external boundary. The controlled part of the external boundary is assumed to have a nonvoid interior and the final position is assumed to be in the same connected component of the set of possible positions as the initial position.

Dynamics of rigid bodies in a two dimensional incompressible perfect fluid

We consider the motion of several rigid bodies immersed in a two-dimensional incompress-ible perfect fluid, the whole system being bounded by an external impermeable fixed boundary. The fluid motion is described by the incompressible Euler equations and the motion of the rigid bodies is given by Newton's laws with forces due to the fluid pressure. We prove that, for smooth solutions, Newton's equations can be recast as a second-order ODE for the degrees of freedom of the rigid bodies with coefficients depending on the fluid vorticity and on the circulations around the bodies, but not anymore on the fluid pressure. This reformulation highlights geodesic aspects linked to the added mass effect, gyroscopic features generalizing the Kutta-Joukowski-type lift force, including body-body interactions through the potential flows induced by the bodies' motions, body-body interactions through the irrotational flows induced by the bodies' circulations, and interactions between the bodies and the fluid vorticity.

On Kolmogorov entropy compactness estimates for scalar conservation laws without uniform convexity

In the case of scalar conservation laws $$ u_{t} + f(u)_{x}~=~0,\qquad t\geq 0, x\in\mathbb{R}, $$ with uniformly strictly convex flux $f$, quantitative compactness estimates - in terms of Kolmogorov entropy in ${\bf L}^{1}_{loc}$ - were established in~\cite{DLG,AON1} for sets of entropy weak solutions evaluated at a fixed time $t>0$, whose initial data have a uniformly bounded support and vary in a bounded subset of ${\bf L}^\infty$. These estimates reflect the irreversibility features of entropy weak discontinuous solutions of these nonlinear equations. We provide here an extension of such estimates to the case of scalar conservation laws with a smooth flux function $f$ that either is strictly (but not necessarily uniformly) convex or has a single inflection point with a polynomial degeneracy.

Point vortex dynamics as zero-radius limit of the motion of a rigid body in an irrotational fluid

The point vortex system is usually considered as an idealized model where the vorticity of an ideal incompressible two-dimensional fluid is concentrated in a finite number of moving points. In the case of a single vortex in an otherwise irrotational ideal fluid occupying a bounded and simply-connected two-dimensional domain the motion is given by the so-called Kirchhoff-Routh velocity which depends only on the domain. The main result of this paper establishes that this dynamics can also be obtained as the limit of the motion of a rigid body immersed in such a fluid when the body shrinks to a massless point particle with fixed circulation. The rigid body is assumed to be only accelerated by the force exerted by the fluid pressure on its boundary, the fluid velocity and pressure being given by the incompressible Euler equations, with zero vorticity. The circulation of the fluid velocity around the particle is conserved as time proceeds according to Kelvin's theorem and gives the strength of the limit point vortex. We also prove that in the different regime where the body shrinks with a fixed mass the limit dynamics is governed by a second-order differential equation involving a Kutta-Joukowski-type lift force.

The Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in a 2D pipe: existence and stability of regular equilibria

In this paper, we study the Vlasov-Navier-Stokes system in a 2D pipe with partially absorbing boundary conditions. We show the existence of stationary states for this system near small Poiseuille flows for the fluid phase, for which the kinetic phase is not trivial. We prove the asymptotic stability of these states with respect to appropriately compactly supported perturbations. The analysis relies on geometric control conditions which help to avoid any concentration phenomenon for the kinetic phase.

Local exact controllability for the 2 and 3-d compressible Navier-Stokes equations

The goal of this article is to present a local exact controllability result for the 2 and 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations on a constant target trajectory when the controls act on the whole boundary. Our study is then based on the observability of the adjoint system of some linearized version of the system, which is analyzed thanks to a subsystem for which the coupling terms are somewhat weaker. In this step, we strongly use Carleman estimates in negative Sobolev spaces.

Dissipative boundary conditions for $2\times 2$ hyperbolic systems of conservation laws for entropy solutions in BV

In this article, we investigate the BV stability of $2\times 2$ hyperbolic systems of conservation laws with strictly positive velocities under dissipative boundary conditions. More precisely, we derive sufficient conditions guaranteeing the exponential stability of the system under consideration for entropy solutions in BV. Our proof is based on a front tracking algorithm used to construct approximate piecewise constants solutions whose BV norms are controlled through a Lyapunov functional. This Lyapunov functional is inspired by the one proposed in J. Glimm's seminal work [J. Glimm, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 18:697--715, 1965], modified with some suitable weights in the spirit of the previous works [J.-M. Coron, G. Bastin, and B. d'Andréa Novel, SIAM J. Control Optim., 47(3):1460--1498, 2008] and [J.-M. Coron, B. d'Andréa Novel, and G. Bastin, IEEE Trans. Automat. Control, 52(1):2--11, 2007].

On the motion of a small light body immersed in a two dimensional incompressible perfect fluid with vorticity

In this paper we consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in a two dimensional unbounded incompressible perfect fluid with vorticity. We prove that when the body shrinks to a massless pointwise particle with fixed circulation, the "fluid+rigid body" system converges to the vortex-wave system introduced by Marchioro and Pulvirenti in [11]. This extends both the paper [2] where the case of a solid tending to a massive pointwise particle was tackled and the paper [3] where the massless case was considered but in a bounded cavity filled with an irrotational fluid.

On compactness estimates for hyperbolic systems of conservation laws

We study the compactness in $L^{1}_{loc}$ of the semigroup mapping $(S_t)_{t > 0}$ defining entropy weak solutions of general hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one space dimension. We establish a lower estimate for the Kolmogorov $\varepsilon$-entropy of the image through the mapping $S_t$ of bounded sets in $L^{1}\cap L^\infty$, which is of the same order $1/\varepsilon$ as the ones established by the authors for scalar conservation laws. We also provide an upper estimate of order $1/\varepsilon$ for the Kolmogorov $\varepsilon$-entropy of such sets in the case of Temple systems with genuinely nonlinear characteristic families, that extends the same type of estimate derived by De Lellis and Golse for scalar conservation laws with convex flux. As suggested by Lax, these quantitative compactness estimates could provide a measure of the order of "resolution" of the numerical methods implemented for these equations.

On the controllability of the non-isentropic 1-D Euler equation

In this paper, we examine the question of the boundary controllability of the one-dimensional non-isentropic Euler equation for compressible polytropic gas, in the context of weak entropy solutions. We consider the system in Eulerian coordinates and the one in Lagrangian coordinates. We obtain for both systems a result of controllability toward constant states (with the limitation $γ< 5/3$ on the adiabatic constant for the Lagrangian system). The solutions that we obtain remain of small total variation in space if the initial condition is itself of sufficiently small total variation.

On the controllability of the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system

In this paper, we study the controllability of the two-dimensional relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system in a torus, by means of an interior control. We give two types of results. With the geometric control condition on the control set, we prove the local exact controllability of the system in large time. Our proof in this case is based on the return method, on some results on the control of the Maxwell equations, and on a suitable approximation scheme to solve the non-linear Vlasov-Maxwell system on the torus with an absorption procedure. Without geometric control condition, but assuming that a strip of the torus is contained in the control set and under certain additional conditions on the initial data, we establish a controllability result on the distribution function only, also in large time. Here, we need some additional arguments based on the asymptotics of the Vlasov-Maxwell system with large speed of light and on our previous results concerning the controllability of the Vlasov-Poisson system with an external magnetic field [14].
