The Wu relations in real algebraic geometry

We construct and study relations between Chern classes and Galois cohomology classes in the Gal(C/R)-equivariant cohomology of real algebraic varieties with no real points. We give applications to the topology of their sets of complex points, and to sums of squares problems. In particular, we show that -1 is a sum of 2 squares in the function field of any smooth projective real algebraic surface with no real points and with vanishing geometric genus, as well as higher-dimensional generalizations of this result.

The Weakly Special Conjecture contradicts orbifold Mordell, and hence the abc conjecture

Starting from an Enriques surface over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$ considered by Lafon, we give the first examples of smooth projective weakly special threefolds which fibre over the projective line in Enriques surfaces (resp. K3 surfaces) with nowhere reduced, but non-divisible, fibres and general type orbifold base. We verify that these families of Enriques surfaces (resp. K3 surfaces) are non-isotrivial and compute their fundamental groups by studying the behaviour of local points along certain étale covers. The existence of the above threefolds implies that the Weakly Special Conjecture formulated in 2000 contradicts the Orbifold Mordell Conjecture, and hence the abc conjecture. Using these examples, we can also easily disprove several complex-analytic analogues of the Weakly Special Conjecture. Finally, the existence of such threefolds shows that Enriques surfaces and K3 surfaces can have non-divisible but nowhere reduced degenerations, thereby answering a question raised in 2005.

Park City lecture notes: around the inverse Galois problem

The inverse Galois problem asks whether any finite group can be realised as the Galois group of a Galois extension of the rationals. This problem and its refinements have stimulated a large amount of research in number theory and algebraic geometry in the past century, ranging from Noether's problem (letting X denote the quotient of the affine space by a finite group acting linearly, when is X rational?) to the rigidity method (if X is not rational, does it at least contain interesting rational curves?) and to the arithmetic of unirational varieties (if all else fails, does X at least contain interesting rational points?). The goal of the present notes, which formed the basis for three lectures given at the Park City Mathematics Institute in August 2022, is to provide an introduction to these topics.

Intermediate Jacobians and rationality over arbitrary fields

We prove that a three-dimensional smooth complete intersection of two quadrics over a field k is k-rational if and only if it contains a line defined over k. To do so, we develop a theory of intermediate Jacobians for geometrically rational threefolds over arbitrary, not necessarily perfect, fields. As a consequence, we obtain the first examples of smooth projective varieties over a field k which have a k-point, and are rational over a purely inseparable field extension of k, but not over k.

Tight approximation for rationally simply connected varieties

We prove that holomorphic maps from an open subset of a complex smooth projective curve to a complex smooth projective rationally simply connected variety can be approximated by algebraic maps for the compact-open topology. This theorem can be applied in particular when the target is a smooth hypersurface of degree d in P^n with n greater than or equal to d^2-1. We deduce it from a more general result: the tight approximation property holds for rationally simply connected varieties over function fields of complex curves.

Supersolvable descent for rational points

We construct an analogue of the classical descent theory of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc in which algebraic tori are replaced with finite supersolvable groups. As an application, we show that rational points are dense in the Brauer-Manin set for smooth compactifications of certain quotients of homogeneous spaces by finite supersolvable groups. For suitably chosen homogeneous spaces, this implies the existence of supersolvable Galois extensions of number fields with prescribed norms, generalising work of Frei-Loughran-Newton.

Rational points on fibrations with few non-split fibres

We revisit the abstract framework underlying the fibration method for producing rational points on the total space of fibrations over the projective line. By fine-tuning its dependence on external arithmetic conjectures, we render the method unconditional when the degree of the non-split locus is $\leq 2$, as well as in various instances where it is $3$. We are also able to obtain improved results in the regime that is conditionally accessible under Schinzel's hypothesis, by incorporating into it, for the first time, a technique due to Harari for controlling the Brauer--Manin obstruction in families.

Number fields with prescribed norms

We study the distribution of extensions of a number field $k$ with fixed abelian Galois group $G$, from which a given finite set of elements of $k$ are norms. In particular, we show the existence of such extensions. Along the way, we show that the Hasse norm principle holds for $100\%$ of $G$-extensions of $k$, when ordered by conductor. The appendix contains an alternative purely geometric proof of our existence result.

Some aspects of rational points and rational curves

Various methods have been used to construct rational points and rational curves on rationally connected algebraic varieties. We survey recent advances in two of them, the descent and the fibration method, in a number-theoretical context (rational points over number fields) and in an algebro-geometric one (rational curves on real varieties), and discuss the question of rational points over function fields of p-adic curves.

The Massey vanishing conjecture for number fields

A conjecture of Mináč and Tân predicts that for any n>2, any prime p and any field k, the Massey product of n Galois cohomology classes in H^1(k,Z/pZ) must vanish if it is defined. We establish this conjecture when k is a number field.

The tight approximation property

This article introduces and studies the tight approximation property, a property of algebraic varieties defined over the function field of a complex or real curve that refines the weak approximation property (and the known cohomological obstructions to it) by incorporating an approximation condition in the Euclidean topology. We prove that the tight approximation property is a stable birational invariant, is compatible with fibrations, and satisfies descent under torsors of linear algebraic groups. Its validity for a number of rationally connected varieties follows. Some concrete consequences are: smooth loops in the real locus of a smooth compactification of a real linear algebraic group, or in a smooth cubic hypersurface of dimension at least 2, can be approximated by rational algebraic curves; homogeneous spaces of linear algebraic groups over the function field of a real curve satisfy weak approximation.

On the integral Hodge conjecture for real varieties, I

We formulate the "real integral Hodge conjecture", a version of the integral Hodge conjecture for real varieties, and raise the question of its validity for cycles of dimension 1 on uniruled and Calabi-Yau threefolds and on rationally connected varieties. We relate it to the problem of determining the image of the Borel-Haefliger cycle class map for 1-cycles, with the problem of deciding whether a real variety with no real point contains a curve of even geometric genus and with the problem of computing the torsion of the Chow group of 1-cycles of real threefolds. New results about these problems are obtained along the way.

The Clemens-Griffiths method over non-closed fields

We use the Clemens-Griffiths method to construct smooth projective threefolds, over any field $k$ admitting a separable quadratic extension, that are $k$-unirational and $\bar{k}$-rational but not $k$-rational. When $k=\mathbb{R}$, we can moreover ensure that their real locus is diffeomorphic to the real locus of a smooth projective $\mathbb{R}$-rational variety and that all their unramified cohomology groups are trivial.

On the integral Hodge conjecture for real varieties, II

We establish the real integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles on various classes of uniruled threefolds (conic bundles, Fano threefolds with no real point, some del Pezzo fibrations) and on conic bundles over higher-dimensional bases which themselves satisfy the real integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles. In addition, we show that rationally connected threefolds over non-archimedean real closed fields do not satisfy the real integral Hodge conjecture in general and that over such fields, Bröcker's EPT theorem remains true for simply connected surfaces of geometric genus zero but fails for some K3 surfaces.

Zéro-cycles sur les espaces homogènes et problème de Galois inverse

Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the inverse Galois problem, and solves, at the same time, Grunwald's problem, for these groups.

Four-fold Massey products in Galois cohomology

In this paper, we develop a new necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of 4-Massey products of elements in the mod-2 Galois cohomology of a field. This new description allows us to define a splitting variety for 4-Massey products, which is shown in the Appendix to satisfy a local-to-global principle over number fields. As a consequence, we prove that, for a number field, all such 4-Massey products vanish whenever they are defined. This provides new explicit restrictions on the structure of absolute Galois groups of number fields.

A restriction isomorphism for cycles of relative dimension zero

We study the restriction map to the closed fiber of a regular projective scheme over an excellent henselian discrete valuation ring, for a cohomological version of the Chow group of relative zero-cycles. Our main result extends the work of Saito--Sato to general perfect residue fields.
