The mystical formula and the mystery of Khronos

In 1908, Minkowski put forward the idea that invariance under what we call today the Lorentz group, $GL(1,3, {\bf R})$, would be more meaningful in a four-dimensional space-time continuum. This suggestion implies that space and time are intertwined entities so that, kinematic and dynamical quantities can be expressed as vectors, or more generally by tensors, in the four-dimensional space-time. Minkowski also showed how causality should be structured in the four-dimensional vector space. The mathematical formulation proposed by Minkowski made its generalization to curved spaces quite natural, leaving the doors to the General Theory of Relativity and many other developments ajar. Nevertheless, it is remarkable that this deceptively simple formulation eluded many researchers of space and time, and goes against our every day experience and perception, according to which space and time are distinct entities. In this contribution, we discuss these contradictory views, analyze how they are seen in contemporary physics and comment on the challenges that space-time explorers face.

Modified theories of gravity with non-minimal curvature-matter coupling

In this contribution one examines the generalization of the $f(R)$ theories of gravity where one introduces a non-minimal coupling between curvature and matter. This model has new and interesting features. %, specially concerning the energy exchange between the matter fields and the curvature. However, as any modified gravity theories, these may give origin to anomalies which might turn the theory physically meaningless. In this respect, one undertakes a study on the energy conditions and the Dolgov-Kawasaki criterion specific of this new model.

The cosmological constant problem: a user's guide

We discuss the validity of general relativity at low-energy and relate the threshold below which the theory breaks down with the observed value of the cosmological constant. This suggests the existence of a mass scale of ${\cal O}(10^{-3}) eV$ and a putative violation of the equivalence principle at about $10^{-14}$ level.

Energy Conditions and Stability in $f(R)$ theories of gravity with non-minimal coupling to matter

Recently, in the context of $f(R)$ modified theories of gravity, a new type of model has been proposed where one directly couples the scalar curvature to matter. As any model in $f(R)$ theory, there are certain conditions which have to be satisfy in order to ensure that the model is viable and physically meaningful. In this paper, one considers this new class of models with curvature-matter coupling and study them from the point of view of the energy conditions and of their stability under the Dolgov-Kawasaki criterion.

Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Cosmology

We present a phase-space noncommutative version of quantum mechanics and apply this extension to Quantum Cosmology. We motivate this type of noncommutative algebra through the gravitational quantum well (GQW) where the noncommutativity between momenta is shown to be relevant. We also discuss some qualitative features of the GQW such as the Berry phase. In the context of quantum cosmology we consider a Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model and obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation for the noncommutative system through the ADM formalism and a suitable Seiberg-Witten (SW) map. The WDW equation is explicitly dependent on the noncommutative parameters, $θ$ and $η$. We obtain numerical solutions of the noncommutative WDW equation for different values of the noncommutative parameters. We conclude that the noncommutativity in the momenta sector leads to a damped wave function implying that this type of noncommmutativity can be relevant for a selection of possible initial states for the universe.

Stability Conditions For a Noncommutative Scalar Field Coupled to Gravity

We consider a noncommutative scalar field with a covariantly constant noncommutative parameter in a curved space-time background. For a potential as a noncommutative polynomial it is shown that the stability conditions are unaffected by the noncommutativity, a result that is valid irrespective whether space-time has horizons or not.

Time and Causation

In this review paper, we consider the fundamental nature of time and causality, most particularly, in the context of the theories of special and general relativity. We also discuss the issue of closed timelike curves in the context of general relativity, and the associated paradoxes, the question of directionality of the time flow and, rather briefly, the problem of time in quantum gravity.

Some new reflections on Mr. Palomar

The character Mr. Palomar, the alter-ego of the Italian author Italo Calvino, appeared for the first time in 1975 on the pages of the "Il Corriere della Sera", and then more or less regularly till its debut as a book in 1983. Through illuminating thoughts and reflections based on observations, for instance, of sea waves, Mr. Palomar discovers that they induce a peaceful and inspirational state of mind that prevents coronary and mental illnesses, and also holds the key to capturing the complexity of the world reducing it into its most elementary mechanisms. In this contribution I will survey some of Mr. Palomar's thoughts while he observes the sky and speculate on others that he might have explored if he shared our contemporary knowledge of the cosmos. I will also discuss the thoughts of other authors on how, cosmological thinking affects the human condition.

Non-minimal curvature-matter couplings in modified gravity

Recently, in the context of f(R) modified theories of gravity, it was shown that a curvature-matter coupling induces a non-vanishing covariant derivative of the energy-momentum, implying non-geodesic motion and, under appropriate conditions, leading to the appearance of an extra force. We study the implications of this proposal and discuss some directions for future research.

Thermal Analysis of the Pioneer Anomaly: A method to estimate radiative momentum transfer

We present a methodology based on point-like Lambertian sources that enables one to perform a reliable and comprehensive estimate of the overall thermally induced acceleration of the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. We show, by developing a sensitivity analysis of the several parameters of the model, that one may achieve a valuable insight on the possible thermal origin of the so-called Pioneer anomaly.

Nonminimal coupling of perfect fluids to curvature

In this work, we consider different forms of relativistic perfect fluid Lagrangian densities, that yield the same gravitational field equations in General Relativity. A particularly intriguing example is the case with couplings of the form $[1+f_2(R)]{\cal L}_m$, where $R$ is the scalar curvature, which induces an extra force that depends on the form of the Lagrangian density. It has been found that, considering the Lagrangian density ${\cal L}_m = p$, where $p$ is the pressure, the extra-force vanishes. We argue that this is not the unique choice for the matter Lagrangian density, and that more natural forms for ${\cal L}_m$ do not imply the vanishing of the extra-force. Particular attention is paid to the impact on the classical equivalence between different Lagrangian descriptions of a perfect fluid.

Phase-Space Noncommutative Quantum Cosmology

We present a noncommutative extension of Quantum Cosmology and study the Kantowski-Sachs (KS) cosmological model requiring that the two scale factors of the KS metric, the coordinates of the system, and their conjugate canonical momenta do not commute. Through the ADM formalism, we obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation for the noncommutative system. The Seiberg-Witten map is used to transform the noncommutative equation into a commutative one, i.e. into an equation with commutative variables, which depend on the noncommutative parameters, $θ$ and $η$. Numerical solutions are found both for the classical and the quantum formulations of the system. These solutions are used to characterize the dynamics and the state of the universe. From the classical solutions we obtain the behavior of quantities such as the volume expansion, the shear and the characteristic volume. However the analysis of these quantities does not lead to any restriction on the value of the noncommutative parameters, $θ$ and $η$. On the other hand, for the quantum system, one can obtain, via the numerical solution of the WDW equation, the wave function of the universe both for commutative as well as for the noncommutative models. Interestingly, we find that the existence of suitable solutions of the WDW equation imposes bounds on the values of the noncommutative parameters. Moreover, the noncommutativity in the momenta leads to damping of the wave function implying that this noncommutativity can be of relevance for the selection of possible initial states of the early universe.

A new source for a braneworld cosmological constant from a modified gravity model in the bulk

We show that a four-dimensional equation of state for a cosmological constant term arises from a perfect fluid in the bulk in the context of a gravity model where the scalar curvature is non-minimally coupled to the perfect fluid Lagrangian density. The four-dimensional theory is fully determined from the induced equations on the brane, subject to the boundary conditions derived across the brane.

Dark Energy-Dark Matter Interaction from the Abell Cluster A586

We find that deviation from the virial equilibrium of the Abell Cluster A586 yields evidence of the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. We argue that this interaction might imply a violation of the Equivalence Principle. Our analysis show that evidence is found in the context of two different models of dark energy-dark matter interaction.

Non-minimal coupling as a mechanism for spontaneous symmetry breaking on the brane

Motivated by the dimensional asymmetry characteristic of braneworlds, we populate the bulk spacetime with matter scalar fields, both real and complex, and couple them non-minimally to gravity. We derive the effective equations of motion on the brane and realize the case when the fields acquire a non-vanishing vacuum expectation value. This entails a change in the effective cosmological constant and in the effective mass of the scalar fields. We find that the non-minimal coupling provides a mechanism for generating spontaneous symmetry breaking at Planck energies on the brane. This mechanism is however rendered unviable for the generation of masses at the energy scales of the standard model.

Extra force in $f(R)$ modified theories of gravity

The equation of motion for test particles in $f(R)$ modified theories of gravity is derived. By considering an explicit coupling between an arbitrary function of the scalar curvature, $R$, and the Lagrangian density of matter, it is shown that an extra force arises. This extra force is orthogonal to the four-velocity and the corresponding acceleration law is obtained in the weak field limit. Connections with MOND and with the Pioneer anomaly are further discussed.

A Curvature Principle for the interaction between universes

We propose a Curvature Principle to describe the dynamics of interacting universes in a multi-universe scenario and show, in the context of a simplified model, how interaction drives the cosmological constant of one of the universes toward a vanishingly small value. We also conjecture on how the proposed Curvature Principle suggests a solution for the entropy paradox of a universe where the cosmological constant vanishes.
