OSS (Outer Solar System): A fundamental and planetary physics mission to Neptune, Triton and the Kuiper Belt

The present OSS mission continues a long and bright tradition by associating the communities of fundamental physics and planetary sciences in a single mission with ambitious goals in both domains. OSS is an M-class mission to explore the Neptune system almost half a century after flyby of the Voyager 2 spacecraft. Several discoveries were made by Voyager 2, including the Great Dark Spot (which has now disappeared) and Triton's geysers. Voyager 2 revealed the dynamics of Neptune's atmosphere and found four rings and evidence of ring arcs above Neptune. Benefiting from a greatly improved instrumentation, it will result in a striking advance in the study of the farthest planet of the Solar System. Furthermore, OSS will provide a unique opportunity to visit a selected Kuiper Belt object subsequent to the passage of the Neptunian system. It will consolidate the hypothesis of the origin of Triton as a KBO captured by Neptune, and improve our knowledge on the formation of the Solar system. The probe will embark instruments allowing precise tracking of the probe during cruise. It allows to perform the best controlled experiment for testing, in deep space, the General Relativity, on which is based all the models of Solar system formation. OSS is proposed as an international cooperation between ESA and NASA, giving the capability for ESA to launch an M-class mission towards the farthest planet of the Solar system, and to a Kuiper Belt object. The proposed mission profile would allow to deliver a 500 kg class spacecraft. The design of the probe is mainly constrained by the deep space gravity test in order to minimise the perturbation of the accelerometer measurement.

Noncanonical Phase-Space Noncommutative Black Holes

In this contribution we present a noncanonical phase-space noncommutative (NC) extension of a Kantowski Sachs (KS) cosmological model to describe the interior of a Schwarzschild black hole (BH). We evaluate the thermodynamical quantities inside this NC Schwarzschild BH and compare with the well known quantities. We find that for a NCBH the temperature and entropy have the same mass dependence as the Hawking quantities for a Schwarzschild BH.

Testing the interaction of dark energy to dark matter through the analysis of virial relaxation of clusters Abell Clusters A586 and A1689 using realistic density profiles

Interaction between dark energy and dark matter is probed through deviation from the virial equilibrium for two relaxed clusters: A586 and A1689. The evaluation of the virial equilibrium is performed using realistic density profiles. The virial ratios found for the more realistic density profiles are consistent with the absence of interaction.

Digging down the past

It is often stated that cosmology is an extreme form of archeology that deals with aeons of time extending back to thousands of millions of years. One talks, for instance, of relics of the early Universe, and phases in the history of the Universe that resemble the division of phases in human development used by archeologists to interpret the data they gather in the field. In this text we shall analyze these "linguistic" similarities, and the differences between these two scientific activities paying some attention on the role played by their theoretical guidelines.

What if ... General Relativity is not the theory?

The nature of gravity is fundamental to understand the scaffolding of the Universe and its evolution. Einstein's general theory of relativity has been scrutinized for over ninety five years and shown to describe accurately all phenomena from the solar system to the Universe. However, this success is achieved in the case of the largest scales provided one admits contributions to energy-momentum tensor involving dark components such as dark energy and dark matter. Moreover, the theory has well known shortcomings, such as the problem of singularities, the cosmological constant problem and the well known initial conditions problems for the cosmological description. Furthermore, general relativity also does not fit the well known procedures that allow for the quantization of the other fundamental interactions. In this discussion we briefly review the experimental bounds on the foundational principles of general relativity, and present three recent proposals to extend general relativity or, at least, to regard it under different perspectives.

On the dynamics of perfect fluids in non-minimally coupled gravity

In this work we explore the consequences that a non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter can have on the dynamics of perfect fluids. It is argued that the presence of a static, axially symmetric pressureless fluid does not imply a Minkowski space-time like as is in General Relativity. This feature can be atributed to a pressure mimicking mechanism related to the non-minimal coupling. The case of a spherically symmetric black hole surrounded by fluid matter is analyzed, and it is shown that under equilibrium conditions the total fluid mass is about twice that of the black hole. Finally, a generalization of the Newtonian potential for a fluid element is proposed and its implications are briefly discussed.

Phase-Space Noncommutativity and the Dirac Equation

We consider full phase-space noncommutativity in the Dirac equation, and find that in order to preserve gauge invariance, configuration space noncommutativity must be dropped. The resulting space structure gives rise to a constant magnetic field background and this effect is explicitly seen on the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. Computing this spectrum we find a bound on the momentum noncommutative parameter $η$, $\sqrtη\lsim2.26μeV/c$.

Hořava-Lifshitz Quantum Cosmology

In this work, a minisuperspace model for the projectable Hořava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity without the detailed balance condition is investigated. The Wheeler-deWitt equation is derived and its solutions are studied and discussed for some particular cases where, due to HL gravity, there is a "potential barrier" nearby $a=0$. For a vanishing cosmological constant, it is found a normalizable wave function of the universe. When the cosmological constant is non-vanishing, the WKB method is used to obtain solutions for the wave function of the universe. Using the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, one discusses how the transition from quantum to classical regime occurs and, for the case of a positive cosmological constant, the scale factor is shown to grow exponentially, hence recovering the GR behaviour for the late universe.

Entropic Gravity, Phase-Space Noncommutativity and the Equivalence Principle

We generalize E. Verlinde's entropic gravity reasoning to a phase-space noncommutativity set-up. This allow us to impose a bound on the product of the noncommutative parameters based on the Equivalence Principle. The key feature of our analysis is an effective Planck's constant that naturally arises when accounting for the noncommutative features of the phase-space.

Reheating via a generalized non-minimal coupling of curvature to matter

In this work one shows that a generalized non-minimal coupling between geometry and matter is compatible with Starobinsky inflation and leads to a successful process of preheating, a reheating scenario based on the production of massive particles via parametric resonance. The model naturally extends the usual preheating mechanism, which resorts to an {\it ad-hoc} scalar curvature-dependent mass term for a scalar field $χ$, and also encompasses a previously studied preheating channel based upon a non-standard kinetic term.

Non-Canonical Phase-Space Noncommutativity and the Kantowski-Sachs singularity for Black Holes

We consider a cosmological model based upon a non-canonical noncommutative extension of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra to address the thermodynamical stability and the singularity problem of both the Schwarzschild and the Kantowski-Sachs black holes. The interior of the black hole is modelled by a noncommutative extension of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We compute the temperature and entropy of a Kantowski-Sachs black hole and compare our results with the Hawking values. Again, the noncommutativity in the momenta sector allows us to have a minimum in the potential, which is relevant in order to apply the Feynman-Hibbs procedure. For Kantowski-Sachs black holes, the same model is shown to generate a non-unitary dynamics, predicting vanishing total probability in the neighborhood of the singularity. This result effectively regularizes the Kantowski-Sachs singularity and generalizes a similar result, previously obtained for the case of Schwarzschild black hole.

The Spirit of Unification: The Wei of Physics

We review, in a historical perspective, developments in physics which led to the emergence of unifying ideas and theories. Some attention is paid to the theoretical programme that started in the second decade of the XXth century and whose objective was to reach a unified description of gravity and electromagnetism. These attempts can be regarded as conceptually akin to the contemporary "theories of everything" which aim to unify all interactions of Nature.

Dark matter as a dynamic effect due to a non-minimal gravitational coupling with matter

In this work the phenomenology of models possessing a non-minimal coupling between matter and geometry is discussed, with a particular focus on the possibility of describing the flattening of the galactic rotation curves as a dynamically generated effect derived from this modification to General Relativity. Two possibilities are discussed: firstly, that the observed discrepancy between the measured rotation velocity and the classical prediction is due to a deviation from geodesic motion, due to a non-(covariant) conservation of the energy-momentum tensor; secondly, that even if the principle of energy conservation holds, the dynamical effects arising due to the non-trivial terms in the Einstein equations of motion can give rise to an extra density contribution that may be interpreted as dark matter. The mechanism of the latter alternative is detailed, and a numerical session ascertaining the order of magnitude of the relevant parameters is undertaken, with possible cosmological implications discussed.

Noncommutative effects in astrophysical objects: a survey

The main implications of noncommutativity over astrophysical objects are examined. Noncommutativity is introduced through a deformed dispersion relation $E^{2}=p^{2}c^{2}(1+λE)^{2} + m^{2}c^{4}$ and the relevant thermodynamical quantities are calculated using the grand canonical ensemble formalism. These results are applied to simple physical models describing main-sequence stars, white-dwarfs and neutron stars. The stability of main-sequence stars and white dwarfs is discussed.

Cosmological thinking: cultural heritage and challenge

The limitations of current technology do not allow one to foresee the expansion of the humankind beyond our planet for at least a few decades. Furthermore, the laws of physics, as for as they are known, preclude any form of traveling beyond the speed of light, as well as any viable and stable space-time shortcuts (wormholes, warp-drives, etc) that would facilitate cosmic traveling. Given the vastness of the Universe these are insurmountable obstacles for any {\it in situ} exploration of the cosmos beyond our most immediate cosmic neighbourhood. Nevertheless, the Universe is transparent and contains countless sources of visible light. Actually, in the last decades, technological developments have made possible to observe the cosmos throughout most of the electromagnetic spectrum as well as to perform dynamical studies that allow perceiving the presence of invisible components such as black holes, dark matter and dark energy. In this respect, humankind has then been given the opportunity to unravel the inner workings of the cosmos and through this process be part of the cosmic habitat. In this contribution various forms of cosmological thinking will be discussed, from some myths of creation till some of the latest scientific discoveries.

Towards a Noncommutative Astrophysics

We consider astrophysical objects such as main-sequence stars, white-dwarfs and neutron stars in a noncommutative context. Noncommutativity is implemented via a deformed dispersion relation $E^{2}=p^{2}c^{2}(1+λE)^{2}+m^{2}c^{4}$ from which we obtain noncommutative corrections to the pressure, particle number and energy densities for radiation and for a degenerate fermion gas. The main implications of noncommutativity for the considered astrophysical objects are examined and discussed.

The singularity problem and phase-space noncanonical noncommutativity

The Wheeler-DeWitt equation arising from a Kantowski-Sachs model is considered for a Schwarzschild black hole under the assumption that the scale factors and the associated momenta satisfy a noncanonical noncommutative extension of the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra. An integral of motion is used to factorize the wave function into an oscillatory part and a function of a configuration space variable. The latter is shown to be normalizable using asymptotic arguments. It is then shown that on the hypersufaces of constant value of the argument of the wave function's oscillatory piece, the probability vanishes in the vicinity of the black hole singularity.
